WASHINGTON (CNN) — CNN's pipeline is bursting on debate night as Democrat Ariana Huffington and Republican Mike Murphy go to war over taxes. While Murphy remains convinced that Senator Obama's plan "starts with the question: how can I tax the rich?" Huffington thinks this is a key issue for the democrats and they should continue focusing on it. At one point Huffington and Murphy playfully started yelling at each other over Edwards' tax plan before they remembered they were supposed to be commenting on the debate - not debating themselves.

It is hard to take Ariana seriously on taxes: only the (comparatively) rich could carp over allowing the the top-tier tax cut to expire and call it "increasing taxes"–especially when millions of the poorest of us are working 3 jobs at minimum wage–then whine about even a modest increase in that wage. Anyway, too many variables affect the tax/wage relationship to be dogmatic about it; even economists disagree.

Taxes are a fact of life, it is what the government does to properly use the money it collects in taxes that matters. You cut wasteful and/or unneccessary spending you keep taxes low and allow for the development of better domestic spending programs. Also, America's economy was a lot stronger in the 90's with a "tax crazy" Democrat in office than a tax cutting Republican currently in office. Those tax cuts are sure stimulating the economy?!

I agree with Arianna on taxes.

Would it not be more prudent to ensure that less small/medium US businesses that actually keep people employed are kept open by reviewing trade, rather than wondering about how to tax the rich? If the employment base is being constantly eroded, who might there be eventually that will be left to actually 'tax'? As businesses seem to now be closing doors across many sectors on a frequent basis due to unlimited imports etc, maybe it would be worth ensuring that this is addressed first, or in a short while, there may not be too many 'rich' to tax anyway. The focus should rather be on maintaining internal jobs, and supporting legislation that ensures balance of trade.
