WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel was the only Democratic presidential candidate to say that English should be the official language of the United States.
But Illinois Sen. Barack Obama took issue with the question, saying that it is "designed precisely to divide us."
"Everybody is going to learn to speak English if they speak in this country," Obama said. "The issue is not whether or not future generations will learn English. The question is how can we come up with a legal, sensible immigration policy and when we get distracted by those kinds of questions, I think we do a disservice to the American people."
