Thompson, a likely presidential candidate, may compete in the Iowa straw poll.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Aides to Fred Thompson, the actor-politician considered a likely presidential candidate, have had repeated conversations with Iowa Republicans about him possibly competing in the straw poll in August.

"They want to know what it's going to look like, how the voting works, the logistics of it and how the program works in general," said Chuck Laudner, executive director of the Republican Party of Iowa.

Laudner said the conversations began a couple of weeks ago, and the most recent was at the end of last week after two prominent contenders, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain, announced plans to skip the August straw poll in Ames, Iowa.

The departure of the two rendered the event all but meaningless and essentially cleared the way for Mitt Romney to win the nonbinding contest. The former Massachusetts governor has focused time and money on the straw poll, traditionally a precursor to the Iowa caucuses in January.

Thompson, the former Tennessee senator, has formed a presidential exploratory committee and is expected to join the GOP race this summer. His late entry and delayed start in raising money made it less likely that he would compete in the Aug. 11 straw poll.

The potential of Thompson participating in the contest had Republicans upbeat.

"People are going to turn out to see him," Laudner said of the actor from NBC's "Law & Order." "Absolutely we have been talking to them."

Among the lesser-known candidates, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback has said he will compete in the straw poll. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee initially said he would as well, though there are signs he may reconsider.

Fred Thompson is a member of the CFR, the driving force behind the push for a North American Union and a common fiat currency, the Amero. If you want to give up national sovereignty, support Fred Thompson. If you want freedom, a phasing out of the IRS and the federal reserve, a phasing out of the welfare state, an end to eternal war, and a return to being a nation that is respected in the world, support Ron Paul, the only true republican.

F.Thompson will never again be as popular as he is now (before announcing formally). He is not nearly as formidable as some would hope, and the expectations are too high for any mortal to meet.

As a repulican (yes, little 'r'), I'm intrigued by the prospect of Thompson. There's still a lot to do at this point but there's one thing going for him beyond all the other candidates: He left the senate.

Is he a modern day Cinncinatus? I wouldn't go that far. But still, to leave the Senate after two terms, while favored to win a third, that counts for something. There are killers (1 democrat), page molestors, and bribed congressmen who refuse to leave quietly or leave at all. Yet Thompson just steps aside. JC Watts did the same thing, too.

Like I said, I'm interested. He has the persona, the speaking ability, and the stature to be a formidable opponent. He still has to convince people on the issues though.

Don't let that "good ole boy" facade fool you, people. Listen to the previous messages–they're right on the mark.

Come on, This is the guy that's going to jump in and lead the party to victory??? He's flush with money and able to raise at will so that makes him a strong contender. Money raising that is what this is about and this front tier status bull. Thompson is a 20yr backroom lawyer and paid lobbiest for both foriegn and domestic interest. Just what we need, someone that knows how and who to pass the envelopes/ no OJT needed. No military experience- like all of them found a way to stay out of nam. He's divorced and remarried to a "girl" 4 yrs younger than his daughter. There's our moral compass. He's on the Advisory board for the Lewis Libby Defense Fund, come on. But boy that man can raise special interest money yeeeehaaaa. And as ol Mitt said he's got that Hollywood thing going. Yup he's just what we need. lol Ann

Is Thompsaon really a proven candidate? Republicans desperatly want to rekindle the spirit of Ronald Reagan, but you don't need to nominate an actor to accomplish this. thompson may look presidential, but just like Tom Osborne in Nebraska, he was elected on fame. With this barometer we should elect Martin Sheen and get it over with. We need a president in office who is there because of his/her substance, not their Q-rating.

Do republicans really think Thompson is there answer?? If Republicans have not switched to picking a Democrat President, then there's something wrong with them.
