Huckabee said the news media is too focused on tabloid stories.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee criticized the news media Wednesday for being more interested in the exploits of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton than in the nation's next leader.

Asked how he could break out of a pack of second-tier candidates, Huckabee complained about a lack of media attention.

"One of the frustrations is that there is more attention on Britney Spears getting out of a car without underwear than there is about who is going to be the next president," he said. "That is something that we as candidates don't control."

Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, met with reporters after touring a high-tech bioscience company in Ames. He acknowledged frustration that an inordinate amount of attention was given to leading GOP candidates Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney.

What could he do to get in the media spotlight?

"Accompanying Paris Hilton to jail might work," Huckabee said.

Moaning about how much attention is paid to a story is dumb. All you have to do in today's age of a thousand channels and billions of websites is change the damn channel and find the content you desire.

You might as well moan and whine about how much porn exists.

Huckabee, you couldn't be more right!

ken minneapolis mn   June 15th, 2007 2:55 pm ET

i didn't know britney had done that until i read here that huckabee said it. in other words, huckabee has used britney spears to draw attention to himself.

LarryO   June 15th, 2007 11:24 am ET

Huckabee wants to be careful what he prays for - should he receive any more scrutiny from the press, it will become very apparent what a lightweight hack he really is.

Fact of the matter is, Americans a year in a half before the election don't care about sleazy politicians. If Huckabee, Romney, Clinton, Obama earned networks ratings at this point then that is where the networks would be. It is too early and we simply don't care about there sugar coated responses to sugar coated questions. If we were, then yes, Huckabee would be all over the primetime networks. Paris, Britney, etc. and other blonde missing white females bring ratings to CNN, MSNBC, AND yes FOX! They are after $$$ and ratings period. Huckabee contact them in May sweeps of 08, in the meantime run Arkansas and do your job.

Bon, Mesa, AZ   June 14th, 2007 12:46 pm ET

Although I agree that the media is all puff and no substance, could it be that Mr. Huckabee is lashing out because of all the media coverage of his druggie son's recent arrest? If he wants media attention for his candidacy, perhaps he could take a page from Bush's playbook and start slandering McCain's family? Or better yet, Giuliani. He'd have some real material there.

Small correction to the perception here. Its not the reporters who are pushing crap on the viewers. I know, I'm a reporter. Its the people on the business side.. the owners and managers who want to make the highest profits, and push the stock price uo. That is done by getting the "best demographics". The best demos are defined as young adults, 18 to 49. Advertisers pay more to reach them, so managers push news people to do whatever it takes to attract them. They do not do this in a vaccuum. Neilsen has meters in thousands of homes to know who watches what every second of the day. They know that people watch when Paris is on, and they don't watch when its politics.

I can accept this on CNN. Its cable, and totally private. However, the broadcast media… ABC, CBS and NBC, along with your local news, are not totally private. They exist by feasting on airwaves owned by the public…airwaves they get to use for free. These companies are fantasically profitable, and would remain so, even if they managed to devote an hour a day to news that was not totaly pandering to young demos. But they don't because no one makes them.

But make no mistake, the airwaves belong to the public. You can and should demand better. You can and should pressure your government to force them to deliver a better product. Until you, the people do, it will never happen.

It is even more sad that Huckabee is LESS interesting than Britney or Paris. I guess that means he is the bottom of the barrel. With good reason. The man never stops whining. We are glad to be rid of him.

Alex, Ann Arbor, Michigan   June 14th, 2007 11:53 am ET

Of course the GOP pandering Fox News is the leader in that style of reporting, virtually ignoring real issues like the Iraq War.

Bob, Cedar Rapids, Iowa   June 14th, 2007 11:51 am ET

Brittany single handedly redefined 'news flash', so this may explain the press coverage.

Maybe it's hard for the media to take any candidate seriously who doesn't believe in evolution. We're supposed to entrust the education of our nation's children to this man's policies? I'd love for him to prove he's smarter than a 5th grader and THEN we'll talk.

Jim Nauseam, Bellingham, WA   June 14th, 2007 11:46 am ET

Huckabee is a raving lunatic. When he declared he didn't believe in evolution, his campaign was over.

Mike - perhaps - you should talk to the peeps at the big cigarette makers, they can help with public perception- remember the one's that donated so much of the lovely china at the Governor's Mansion - oh yeah - I remember that was when you vetoed the restaurant smoking ban. guess that was payback - at least before you got on the "health" kick.

mark, little rock, ar   June 14th, 2007 11:23 am ET

Well Mike - you did get a lot of attention when you left the AR Governor's Mansion and moved into your own McMansion - and your wife registered for gifts all over Little Rock. I thought about sending her a bowl for the china pattern - something from which to drink her milk.

Henry, Austin, TX   June 14th, 2007 11:18 am ET

Perhaps you should read "The Assault on Reason" by Al Gore ….

Joe Talarico, Zelienople, PA   June 14th, 2007 10:50 am ET

While I couldn't agree with him more on general principle, I am more interested in Britney Spears getting out af a car without underwear than I am in Mike Huckabee.

Catherine, Chicago,IL   June 14th, 2007 10:45 am ET

Huckabee is probably a very decent person but the only bump he got in the polls was when he made reference to John Edward's hair during the debate. Not really something to base a campaign on, is it?

Dan, Philadelphia, PA   June 14th, 2007 10:32 am ET

Doesn't Huckabee talk about how he lost 100 pounds?

Is that not diversion?

Not enough attention to Ron Paul 2008

Ron Paul is our only TRUE HOPE!!!

Ginny, Savannah, GA   June 13th, 2007 9:10 pm ET

Huckabee is funny!! I like humor in my politicians!

Bob Los Angeles CA   June 13th, 2007 7:23 pm ET

Could it be that the American people are already tired of listening to politicians tell us what they think we want to hear them say? The fact that there have been debates already is ridiculous. A year and a half BEFORE the next election is way too long to campaign.

Maybe Paris Hilton and Britney Spears are a diversion.

Dave, Tucson AZ   June 13th, 2007 6:56 pm ET

Half the stories on CNN are fluff like this. And worse, more and more news is video only. Video is blocked for me at work, and even if it wasn't, I wouldn't want to waste minutes to view a story when I can read it in seconds.

Bruce, Hurst, Tx.   June 13th, 2007 6:52 pm ET

I think we are all fed up with politicians. We don't care who wins, you are all politicians. Does it really matter?

David, Gilbert Arizona   June 13th, 2007 6:48 pm ET

There was a time when watching the news meant actually watching news stories. It was a given that the nightly news was a social service reporters took very seriously, not a tabloid revenue base where talking heads yell at each other and spin useless stories like they actually have relevance. How times have changed…

DJ, Los Angeles, CA   June 13th, 2007 6:17 pm ET

It has to do with advertering $ which is driven by ratings.

The only thing we could do is simply stop watching television news until all the press coverage stopped re: Paris.

Which is actually what I plan on doing.

Dustin, Honolulu, HI   June 13th, 2007 6:01 pm ET

CNN does likely get more traffic on Paris than politics. This is the fault of the consumer, not CNN. If you don't think Paris should be covered, stop reading or watching anything that has anything to do with her. The media will only publish/broadcast profitable stories. The only way to make Paris not profitable is to stop reading about her.

Chris Phillips, Kansas City, MO   June 13th, 2007 5:46 pm ET

Accompanying Paris to jail won't work either. You already have to be President for that.

DJ, Los Angeles, CA   June 13th, 2007 5:43 pm ET

Damn straight.

He is 100% correct. The mass media should be ashamed about letting the tabloids and papparazzi dictate what is considered "news".

He is so right the money about how skewed the media coverage is on deciding what gets air time.

I think Paris should be released and sheisty media executives should be jailed instead - including the papparazzi for trepassing, disturbing the peace in the neighborhood and crimes against humanity for dumbing down the public with meaningless news.

J. Grosvenor, Melbourne, FL   June 13th, 2007 5:28 pm ET

Mike would garner at least as much coverage as Britney if HE got out of a car wearing a short dress with no underpants.

P.T., New York City, NY   June 13th, 2007 5:20 pm ET

What I wonder is if CNN gets more traffic for Paris Hilton than it does for national politics. If that's the case, then the media has become nothing more than a tabloid.

Dalton, Detroit, MI   June 13th, 2007 5:17 pm ET

Mike Huckabee I couldn't agree with you more in fact of you promise to make these two tarts vanish you have my vote for president and I'm a democrat
