Ravenel is Giuliani's South Carolina state chairman.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) — South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel, a former real estate developer who became a rising political star after his election last year, was indicted Tuesday on federal cocaine charges.

Ravenel and another man were accused of distributing less than 500 grams of the drug starting in late 2005.

Ravenel is also the state chairman for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign.

Ravenel started his political career in 2004, funding his own campaign for a U.S. Senate seat. He finished a close third in the Republican primary.

Ravenel was founder of the Ravenel Development Corp., a commercial real estate development company. His father, Arthur Ravenel Jr., was a powerful politician from Charleston who served eight years in the U.S. House and is a former state representative and state senator.

[...] Candidates treat endorsers-gone-bad the way Soviet leaders handled purged rivals: erase them from photos and never speak of them again.  John McCain did this when the Florida co-chairman of his campaign was also arrested for soliciting sex in a bathroom.  So did Rudy Giuliani when his South Carolina chairman was indicted for distributing coke.  [...]

Anyone who has ever lived in Charleston knows how goofy the locals are. Their kids are potheads and never grow out of it. Rudy's mistake is in not being more careful about who he gets on board.

I love it!

The more some people make Romney the butt of jokes for being clean-cut, a family man and somewhat stodgy, you realize in a world inhabited by Ravenel and William "Cold cash" Jefferson (both sides covered) that being clean-cut "aint" so bad.

Say goodnight Rudy……………

Corruption hits both party lines, but why is it always the Republicans party that is hit the hardest. I thought that it was the party of RIGHT, Fairness, Pure, Rightousness and Honesty. It turning out to be a party of Liars, Weasles and now Dope Dealers.

why is it Rudy is so closely associated with so many crooks? And this is the guy pubbies want to be president? WHy am I not surprised?

Skip, Dallas, TX   June 19th, 2007 9:51 pm ET

Rudy's campaign seemed to be emploding anyway…hopefully, this will be one of the final nails in it's coffin.

Rudy needs to stop aligning himself with thugs, but since that wont happen he might as well drop out.

What a surprise! I can't wait to see the spin the Repubs put on this.

Agree with you on that Justin in that real estate development is one of the worst backgrounds for a publicly elected official due to the conflicts of interest you mentioned.

It's bad enough the industry is rotten with scam artists like him…not to mention selling 500 grams of coke running the Republican front-runners state campaign.

Talk about a conflict of interests…this must set a new record low for the integrity of our political system.

less then 500 grams you say eh? that's a lot of cocaine. Say he had 500 grams.. that's a little over 17 ounces of coke. To put that in perspective to an average person.. that's enough coke to get 1000 people high out of their gourds for say at least 1-2 hours. I'm not certain of the laws in S.C. but in Texas if say an average person were to get arrested for this charge.. they would be looking at roughly 5-6 years Federal time. (in a Federal prison) or maybe some jail time and 10-12 years probation with a good lawyer.

500 grams?

This has got to be most disgraceful epidemic of corruption to shock the nation in our history!

SC State chairman for Rudy? CURRENT state treasurer entrusted with a handling taxpayer money?

Just another corruption scandal to add to the list that seems to never end.

the ravenel and limehouses are old familys from historic charleston that have raised taxes in black gullah areas where black familys have owned the land for generations after slavery. ACRES! of water and beach front land!!!! why? so the elderly people that dont have income cant afford an extra $1000 and loose there land. They dont sell there land no matter the value ($100,000+/acre)because they have pride in what there ancestors blead for. The rich "old" familys get mad and make political moves. who is first in line at the auctions? you guessed it the political people who made the tax increase. check what ravenel did before treasurer…real estate! im not suprised about the coke because it fits into there agenda to make MORE money off the uneducated SOUTH CAROLINA where i was born and attended public school. keep the sheep stupid

Wow. I wonder if he faces 235 years in jail, for abusing his position, and taking bribes. You know, so companies in Nigeria will buy from companies bribing him….

Oh, wait, that was Democratic Representative William Jefferson. So, let's quit pretending that corruption is solely in the Republican party.

Bob, San Francisco, CA   June 19th, 2007 6:17 pm ET

I'm shocked, SHOCKED to find out there's corruption in politics. And Republicans no less. I thought they cornered the market on "values". Haha!

Anonymous   June 19th, 2007 6:14 pm ET

Not possession, but distribution of cocaine???

Scandalous…an elected official indicted for being a drug dealer?

Now the question becomes how did he fund his own campaign and did any of this laundered drug money get into other campaign funds?

Scary

ThatLiberal, Tampa   June 19th, 2007 6:12 pm ET

not surprising. Most of the people with Rudy are probably corrupt
