Gravel spoke at the Take Back America conference Tuesday.
WASHINGTON (CNN) - Entering the stage to a chorus of "power to the people," former Sen. Mike Gravel told a gathering of progressive activists he wanted to see stronger leadership on the war from Democrats in Congress.
"People are dying and we do nothing about it. We do nothing about it," he said to cheers at the "Take Back America" conference in Washington.
Gravel said the reason Democrats were so successful in 2006 had more to do with the fact that Republicans were so "lousy" and less to do with the vision his party offered.
He called on Democrats to "establish" a record of "leadership" on the war in the next 18 months. If they don't he said, the party "may not deserve" to take back the White House and hold onto Congress in 2008.

Gravel speaks the truth
The Democrats didn't take back Congress because people thought they were great and liked what they were about.
They elected opposition to Bush's rubber-stamp Congress.
And they got cowardly compromises and spineless opposition to Bush's policies.
Gravel is a good man. But he wasn't in office to oppose this and be face the challenge when it mattered.
One man who is running for President was, and he was the only one to oppose the Iraq War from the beginning (and the Patriot Act) - his name is Ron Paul he is the only principled man running for office. He believes in the Constitution and not going overseas to start these foreign adventures, like Gravel. He believes in bringing the troops home, like Gravel.
Some have said there should be a Unity '08 ticket with Ron Paul and Gravel. I don't know if that's realistic, but I tell you this much: If Ron Paul is elected, he'll be strong on national defense, but not do what Bush did: No aggressive wars overseas. He'll bring the troops home.
Thank Gravel for also speaking the truth about this misadventure in Iraq and why - not that they've acted on it - the Democrats were elected to take over Congress.
Sen Mike Gravel is the Man of Common Sense. He has more of it than either Party. There should be more news coverage of him. I would vote for him as President.
Republicans and Democrats are alike. Nothing is new with this Congress. I hope Congress realizes that the American People are smart enough to vote for a Man of Common Sense. We voted and changed Congress in the last Congresional elections and surprised all. We'll do it again if Congress doesn't stop giving away our Country and Taxes.
