Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, speaks at a news conference on Wednesday on Capitol Hill.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Senate is expected to vote this morning on a delicately crafted immigration reform bill that survived a day of legislative wrangling on Wednesday that one lawmaker likened to "trench warfare."

One senator predicted the vote would be "a cliffhanger."

The bill provides a path to citizenship for some of the 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. and toughens border security.

Bunch of losers...BUSH did not take no for an answer the first time.

So he tried it again and got the same answer.

Don't forget a lot of Democrats also voted NO on this, probably to save their own hides. I noticed that a lot of Republican sell-outs like McCain, Lott and company also propped up this bill so quit blaming the Democrats.

Thank you Americans for calling your Senators off the hook to demand this bill get shot down.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why congress can't pass legislation that deals with securing the borders and nothing else. Once they are secured, then we can deal with the next step, but until we plug the holes, the flood of people illegally coming here will make anything else we do moot.

Matt Houston, Texas   June 28th, 2007 11:48 am ET

How about the Government first actually secures our borders and then we can talk about what to do about all the illegal immigrants.

Why is it so tough for this government(both Democrat and Republican) do realize that securing our borders is much more important than fighting to legalize more people to vote for their party?

Give me “your tired and poor" is meant for our legal immigrants....those people who follow the rules.... This is a ridiculous piece of feel good legislation that cost enormous amounts of our money, nothing will be enforced and 20,000,000 more will come across.
NO! NO! NO!

"We the People"

Tom Dedham, Mass   June 28th, 2007 11:23 am ET

Don't forget that Kennedy is also the genius that pushed though the bill in the 60's that allows for the anchor babies fiasco.
I am ashamed at my home state for blindly voting this piece of vermin in election after election.
Bush is a disgrace as well and it is nice that we Republicans can find some common ground wit you Democrats that this bill is bogus.
Maybe it is because we are not speaking with a political party affiliation, but as AMERICANS.
If we are going to be quoting things, how about the one that goes "FOR the people and by the people".

"give me your tired, your poor". It's American people who are tired and becomming poor as we subsidise every medical problem (including births of children) of Mexican illegal immigrants. It's breaking our health care system and closing multiple emergency rooms in the southwest. I can think of much better ways to spend all the money that comes out of the pay checks of all the Americans who work and pay taxes.

RightyTighty   June 28th, 2007 11:20 am ET

Sure glad we have some Republican Congressman with a little common sense. The Demorats are bound and determine to sell us out again.

LoooseyGoosey   June 28th, 2007 11:06 am ET

If it walks like amnesty, talks like amnesty and smells like amnesty. Then it must be amnesty. Why isn't this Congress listening to us?? We were promised things were going to change.

First No Child Left Behind...now the Immigration "Reform" Bill?

Any legislation backed by Kennedy and Bush seems to just plain rotten.

NCLB made states have to scramble to find funds to pay for added costs to comply with new regulations and forced thousands of teachers into leaving the profession – since they had to pay out of pocket for additional certifications.

Immigration Reform likewise is a horrible bill that's sends the wrong message to the world. If we let 15 million illegals get amnesty (after paying "fines") – that will be the biggest incentive for the rest of the world to sneak across the border as well?

Not much a deterrent to build a 20 billion dollar wall if all that happens when the get across is amnesty.

Thanks yet again for wasting my hard-earned tax money yet again...and for selling-out America to you big $ lobbies that want to replace American jobs with illegals.

I usually take the Democratic side, but on this immigration reform issue, I'll take the "American people's side," against this reform, as securing our national borders should be absolutely paramount, before any kind of amnesty be given. I hope the bill fails!

LooseyGoosey   June 28th, 2007 10:19 am ET

I sure hope they pass this bill. It will further destroy their legacy. Which is at about 14% right now. We need new blood in Congress, people that are listening to the American people. This ain't it.

May Wisdom and Justice Prevail!
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Whats that motto? "The price of inaction is to high".

That coming from Ted Kennedy says it all. What a joke he has become..

Pete, Tarpon Springs, FL   June 28th, 2007 10:09 am ET

I beg all of our senators, congressman and all other elected officials to take a moment and spend it reading our constitution and their oath of office before taking another vote on this issue. Because my fellow Americans they by voting for this unrealistic legislation are committing treason upon the United States of America.

I also beg all of you my fellow citizens and all of you legal immigrants to read this legislation as proposed and that if you agree with me as to the huge burden it will create on you, your children and there’s, that you will for our great nation, the United States of America rise up and let the anger and fury of your voices be heard by your elected representatives.

Call them, fax them, let them know how you feel, let it once again be “WE THE PEOPLE”
