WASHINGTON (AP) — Love him or hate him, anybody who's followed Bill Clinton's career knows it's always been about him — as in No. 1 or "me," "my" and "I."

Now it's about her.

Considered by friends to be as self-absorbed as he is brilliant, the former president checks his ego at the curb this week to fly to Iowa and take a surrogate's role in the presidential campaign of his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

Her advisers privately fret that the former president will overshadow Sen. Clinton with his unparalleled campaign skills and career-long habit of drawing attention to himself. One of her confidants, still stinging from the Monica Lewinsky affair, refers to Clinton as "Mr. Me."

But the senator needs his help and her staff is betting that Bill Clinton is ready to be Mr. Her.

"He's going to talk about her and she's going to talk about the country," campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson said. "And nobody can do better than him."

Wolfson pointed to a powerful, five-minute campaign video in which the former president outlines Sen. Clinton's biography. Framed by a lamp's soft yellow glow, Clinton talks about his wife's commitment to public service, starting in law school, where they met.

"She just kept plugging away with new ideas, making progress, day in and day out," Clinton says. "That's the kind of leader she is."

The video is a taste of things to come in Iowa, New Hampshire and beyond, campaign officials say.

Still, a few discerning Clinton associates note that he used the words "I," "me" and "my" 16 times in the video. They wryly observe that the taping was a model of self-control when compared with his past habits.

Bubba knows his bleach-blonde babe is unelectable without him, and probably even with him, but their joint egos blind them to this statistical fact.

They are a TEAM in politics. Why can't people see that?? At least they have gotten by the B.J. Wish every one else would.

To say that Bill Clinton is that self absorbed is not fair. I don't think he is any moore self absorbed than any one else is! He was a great president dispite the right-wing effort to totaly destroy him and at the end of his terms this country was in better shape than it has ever been. God bless the Clintons! Go Hillary!!

hi Bill, good to know you're around. since you're gone, we missed lots of love stories! hope you'll resume fun after Hillary elected (when she becomes busier than now).

It is ridicules for any one to believe Clinton was our best president. It Was Reagan and bill would not make it in the top 20. Yes let us all return to the high cost of living and a big tax just like it was when he was in office. These fool left wing nuts still live in Clintons bubble just like the one we had right before he left office and that one went pop. Hillary would have left bill a long time ago but her ambition to become president is so strong she will put up with anything he does.

Bill and Hillary Wallace learned there poltics from George Wallace. They do talk a good game but only say what the people want to hear so we really dont have any thing to go on except what they've done. Like that national health care program they gave us last time.

Marc, Waukesha Wi   July 2nd, 2007 3:16 am ET

Hillary is losing steam to Obama and she needs Bill to energize the campaign. What she doesn't realize is that this is going to backfire and she will get overshadowed. Remember last election, him not campaigning for anyone to not overshadow them. Husband or not, he's more important and people come to see him, not her.

Hey Bill,

Where ya been? Give us the juicy details of the last 6 six yrs.. Come on, not that boring stuff. We know leopards can't change their spots.

LeftyLosey   July 2nd, 2007 9:44 am ET

Hey Hill,

What do they call someone that repeats the same thing over and over always expecting a different result?

LeftyLosey   July 2nd, 2007 9:52 am ET

The answer is Psychotic for all you low paid interns blindly following CNN's leftist agenda.

Thats right, Hillary has psychotic tendancies.. Her relationship with Bill is clear evidence of that.

paul,gainesville fl   July 2nd, 2007 2:11 pm ET

That is right on the money about Hillary being Psychotic. She panders to every one in order to get a few votes. I do not think that Yankee hat is going to help her this time.

She is just like bill an egotistical nut job.

Hillary used the word "I" A LOT during the last debate. It isn't just Bill.
