Cindy Sheehan considering run against Pelosi

Cindy Sheehan is considering a run for Congress

(CNN) - Despite swearing off public life earlier this year, peace activist Cindy Sheehan would run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as an independent in 2008 unless the speaker moves to impeach President Bush, a Sheehan spokeswoman said Sunday.

Sheehan, a northern California resident, is taking part in a protest caravan from President Bush's home in Crawford, Texas, to Washington, which is scheduled to arrive July 23. Spokeswoman Tiffany Burns told CNN that Sheehan would challenge the speaker, who has held her San Francisco-area seat since 1987, unless Pelosi introduces articles of impeachment before then.

There was no immediate reaction from Pelosi's office to Sheehan's threat. The speaker said in November that calls for impeaching Bush were "off the table," but that Congress would push for an end to the widely unpopular, 4-year-old war under Democratic control.

Sheehan achieved national attention when she camped outside Bush's home throughout August 2005 to demand a meeting with the president over her son's death. While Bush ignored her, the vigil made her one of the most prominent figures among opponents of the war.

But in May, after congressional Democratic efforts to set a March 2008 goal for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq failed in the face of a presidential veto, Sheehan quit the anti-war movement in disgust and declared that her son Casey - a U.S. soldier killed in Baghdad in 2004 - had died "for nothing."

She said she was exhausted by the personal, financial and emotional toll her campaign had taken, disillusioned by the failure of Democratic politicians to end the war and tired of a peace movement she said "often puts personal egos above peace and human life."

It is surprising to me that politicians have been unable to put the needs of the country above their personal goals. Why is it that the very people who are supposed to represent the citizens of the United States consistently ignore the will of the American people. Maybe when their is a revolt. I am sure it is only a matter of time before there is an inciting event that even Karl Rove cannot spin.

Hey Cindy, since you have soooo much money to throw around on a hopeless run at congress, how about coughing up a buck or two for a real head stone for your son's grave, rather than a generic government one?

With Cindy's pedigree, contacts and donor support from the anti-war movement, Pelosi would have to take her seriously in what is a very liberal, anti-war district. It would certainly hold Pelosi's feet to the fire to get us out of Iraq and to demand accountability from this administration of scoff-laws. Go Cindy! This is an excellent use of the stature she has earned. More regular people should get involved in politics!

Pelosi vs Shehan??? Good, maybe a conservative will win when they cancel each other out. Of course that would probably cause another earthquake in San Fancisco! Serously, who is the bigger nut Pelosi or Sheehan? To me it's a tossup

Now it's the fault of congress regarding President Bush's policies? Maybe we need to kick the majority party out of congress. Wait that is the democrates. I guess we need to put the republicans back in control of congress. But you don't like them either! Where is Ross Perot when you need him????

How come Cindy never paid her son the time of day, nor cared about him until AFTER he was already dead? Hmmmmm....sounds, smells, and looks like a true politician to me! LOL You're a true disgrace lady – and I use the term "lady," very loosely here! ***Sincere apologies to any true ladies reading this blog that may be offended being grouped with this waste of oxygen!***

Hey Cindy, since you have soooo much money to throw around on a hopeless run for congress, how about pitching a buck or two to buy your son a real head stone, rather than just giving him a generic government issued one? Last I heard, his grave was still unmarked because you were holding up the placement of that head stone as well.......do you honestly look at yourself in the mirror everyday and not vomit?

For everyone whining in respect to "The lesser of two evils," you are left to contend with the fact that at least Cindy is attempting to do something other than post her political opinions online . . .

Cindy Sheehan is a figment of her own imagination. She's a joke and anyone who takes her seriously should have a reality check. What an ego!

You people just don't get it, do you? She's doing what you should be doing and that is forcing the Democratic Congress to get off its backside and do what the people said in '06. One effective way is to challenge someone in office, in this case, Pelosi, and shake them up making them realize that they stand to lose! Good for Cindy! She gets it.

So many Americans are blinded by what they read in the media and refuse to focus on the struggle ahead for our Country. How can anyone blame Sheehan for addressing the corrupt Bush regime. What is truly sad is how we tend to see her as the problem, while the Cheney/Bush machine defies the constitution daily. Her son did die for nothing. We were free and we are now. Keep people like Bush in high level positions and soon, very soon, like a thief in the night, all of your constitutional rights will have been desolved, in the name of "the war on terror"
Cindy Sheehan has more balls than most Americans, and more power to her. If more folks got out up out of their chair, turned off CNN and really fought for change, what a wonderful place this would be.

There's no immediate reaction from Ms. Pelosi's office because her staff hasn't stopped chuckling at this yet.

Yikes. Go back to Vacaville and stay for a while longer.

Cindy Sheehan, another "know it all" peson who knows nothing of what she is challenging. Think if her son were alive he would not be so proud of his mother, he enlisted, he did what was expected of him, and, sadly paid the untimate price, as others also do, wake up Cindy!!!!!

Lets take all the people on the far left and ship them off to the middle east where the traitors belong. Oh, no – wait! The middle east fanatics will be here soon enough to bomb our cities into oblivion just as soon as all you sick minded people vote to bring our troops home in 2008! Yeah, thats it! bring our troops home cuz we'll need them to fight the war here soon enough. I feel sorry for people who have lost someone to this war. But Cindy in office? Whos next Donald Duck? Sometimes it takes someone with guts to make the unpopular choices to save our freedoms. Cindy would invite al qaeda to the white house if she could bring her son back.
Please wake up America. They want to destroy us!

am i the only one that feels that saying your son died "for nothing" is kind of disrespectful to the son? lok i am no fan of nancy pelosi, but i say sheehan should run in 2008 just so she can fail and maybe then she'll shut up.

She is doing this because her son was killed because of a lie and not in defence of freedom and Pelosi will not impeach the president because of that lie. How many more soldiers are going to die for this lie? I'll vote for her because she stands for truth and justice.

Unfortunately, I think that Cindy's run would be a dead end, and is not the most effective course for extricating ourselves from the mess that Bush has created. Still–I admire her for taking a stand, which is more than I can say for most Americans. As for the comments about women being ineffective leaders: look at the current mess caused by our male-dominated government–an inept president and an ineffective congress. Hard to imagine that women leaders couldn't do better!

She is not the first or the last woman who will lose a child to war.But does she have to continue to dishonor his memory.being in the military was his choice, there is no draft. If he was against the war he could have refused the orders and faced a courtmarshall.
Her rantings and ravings do not honor him or his memory. My sons made me swear if they were killed in this war that I would never behave like her or dishonor them the way she dishonors every Solider or Marine killed

OMG when will the vocal minority realize that this type of hype is killing the troops you are "trying to save." The public division and demand to get troops out now only serve to strengthen the terrorists resolve. Don't believe me? Here is what Ayman Zawahiri said "You must be patient and steadfast, Rejoice, for victory is near, with Allah's permission, and the herds of crusaders have begun to split up and their sole concern has become searching for a way out."
How many of the insurgents would have given up if it weren't for the HOPE that YOU are giving them?
Anyone who says they are supporting the troops by supporting their immediate pull out is only deceiving themselves and lying to the public.
I don’t doubt that Mrs. Sheehan thinks that her son died for nothing. I also think that what he DID die for is far beyond her comprehension. I just don't know if its due to her ignorance or grief.

This is hilarious. First, although Bush has not been a good president, he hasn't done anything to be impeached, just as Clinton didn't deserve his whole impeachment fiasco. If they do bring up articles of impeachment, it will just be revenge for the republican controlled congress impeaching Clinton. The trial will go to the senate and once again nothing will happen. Presidents cannot be impeached simply because they are in office during an unpopular war/conflict. Her son's and every other troops death in anywar is tragic, but these young men and women volunteered to be in the armed forces, and are dying for their country. Any man or woman that considers that nothing has shouldn't be running for office. Dying serving the greatest country in the world is something. Her son probably rolled over in his grave when she said that.
