WASHINGTON (AP) — John Edwards plans to visit parts of the country beset by poverty, a leading issue in his Democratic presidential campaign.

Edwards' three-day swing on his "Road to One America" tour will take him through New Orleans, Memphis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and eight other cities and eight states, beginning July 16. The former North Carolina senator said the makeup of the poor has changed in the past 40 years to include a wide range of ages and a variety of ethnic and regional backgrounds.

"Many are hardworking men and women with full-time jobs who are still struggling to make ends meet. And their numbers are growing," he said.

Edwards also plans to visit towns hit by the loss of manufacturing jobs and cities with suburban poverty. He is not to first to go on such a tour.

President Lyndon Johnson declared the war on poverty in 1964 from eastern Kentucky's coal country, the same territory that would draw Robert F. Kennedy for a two-day caravan tour in 1968 a month before announcing he would run for president.

In 2005, Edwards helped create the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina law school.

You could change Bush/Cheney to your much beloved Kennedy/Kerry and make the same claims.

I detest this fraud of a lawyer Edwards, but the FACTS are that he came from nothing and through hard work from his folks putting him through school and yes, his determination to succeed in school he made something of himself.

That my friends is called the American dream or the American way, not by liberal social programs that encourage cycle after cycle of poverty, but a good solid work ethic and the desire to get something out of life.

You only get out of life what you put into it.

Bush/Cheney talk about war but never fought in one.
Bush/Cheney talk about minimum wage, but neither worked for minimum wage.
Bush/Cheney talk about affordable health care(talk against it, actually), but neither has ever been without health care.
But let Edwards talk about poverty, and the looney right screech and flail their arms, saying he can't talk about it because he isn't poor.
They would be funny if they weren't so dense.

Mr. Edwards vision of what America could be is the same one that millions of reasonable people have in this country. The problem seems to be getting past all the hype and hot air that distorts every good message.

Every right to talk about poverty, sure, everyone does.

The morality of him charging large amounts of money to do so like in the past is pretty bad.

It seems like his motto is "fight for the poor, or get rich trying"

Jon, Sacramento ~ Ca   July 9th, 2007 5:10 pm ET

At best - Edwards is VP material. He is the Dan Quayle of the Democrats.

Susan, Fort Pierce, Florida   July 9th, 2007 4:39 pm ET

John Edwards has every right to talk about poverty! I like his style and message. FDR was rich and built a solid middle class and established policies that kept this country prosperous for over sixty years! We can't let the Republicans destroy all that! Just because your rich does not mean you don't wan't to help the poor. Edwards populest agenda is a good one. Like FDR, Truman, Kennedy, and Clinton Edward's Agenda will benefit the "real America", not just the very rich and the big corporations that suck up to the Military Industrial Complex!. It's not "big government" thats our enemy, its the mega corporations that need war and sacrafice our precious young
as cannon fodder to feed thier blood thirsty greed for profits! Wake up America! Go John Edwards!

I'll tell you why there's a poverty tour, because we've bankrupted this country on a war and for what? There's nothing won, there nothing to show for it but a pile of debt and 3,000 dead Americans. What could we have done with $610 Billion Dollars!? Where's the leadership? No one will stand up for the American worker, no one is willing to invest in our future, no one is talking about making American the land of innovation and competitiveness. Why do we allow the same old crap hit the airwaves? We deserve better.

I wonder, will he be traveling first class?

Nicosia Davis   July 9th, 2007 1:25 pm ET

I applaud John Edwards for bringing poverty to the forefront of this election but what does a man with $400.00 dollar haircut know about present day poverty. I am North Carolinan that knows John Edward's story of humble beginnings but being poor back then as compared to abject poverty today is a little different.

Voln, Sierra Vista, AZ   July 9th, 2007 1:20 pm ET

I wonder if he is going to get paid like he has in the past for talk about poverty.

How is it moral to make more in 1 talk given than a poverish combined house income?

Matthew   July 9th, 2007 1:03 pm ET

I really like what was said. Let's look at the message instead of killing the messanger.

TOM CAGNEY.....CHANDLER,AZ   July 9th, 2007 12:55 pm ET

SO WHERE WILL EDWARDS GET HIS PRICEY HAIRCUTS IN THE POVERTY ZONES?

Saint Louis, Missouri   July 9th, 2007 12:33 pm ET

I am a lady of Color and I appreciate this more than any canidate I've seen so for, stay with this launch and it will gain your entrance to the House of Power. To long we shared the name White House, and this tell the World that people of color dont have a chane due to the name of the USA Administrative Laws that governs the people, this was named because of the European status Quo, give it all you got for all the people regardless of back ground, we are all of the one family HUMANITY. Talk is cheap but work is 'HARD'. So go for the Poverty, Social Security, Medicare, stay with Health Issues, YOU WILL WIN.

For once in American Politics, could we look at the message instead of killing the messanger.

Tom - Dedham, Mass   July 9th, 2007 12:07 pm ET

We need more social programs like the ones that the Democrats have been using to keep a solid voting block.

You only get out of life what you put into it.

Dan (Baltimore, MD)   July 9th, 2007 11:52 am ET

Any bets on how much of his money he'll donate to actually help out the people in poverty intsead of just exploiting them?

Rick, Kansas City Missouri   July 9th, 2007 11:37 am ET

If you hate poverty in America Edwards why not use foreign aid money to improve America?
