Jay Garrity, left, with then-Gov. Romney in 2003.

BOSTON (AP) — An aide to Republican Mitt Romney used fake badges so he and other members of Romney's advance staff could gain access to closed areas and, in one instance, avoid paying a highway toll, according to a published report.

Jay Garrity, a Romney aide who is on leave for allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer in two states, manufactured the silver badges with a Massachusetts state seal while Romney was still Massachusetts governor, the Boston Herald reported, quoting unnamed campaign sources. Garrity then gave them to at least two fellow logistics aides, both of whom remain with Romney's presidential campaign.

Under Massachusetts law, it is illegal to use a badge without authority, an offense punishable with a fine up to $50.

The Romney campaign issued a statement that did not directly address the allegations.

"No one on the Mitt Romney for President campaign is authorized to use a badge, nor has the campaign provided anyone with a badge," campaign spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom told The Associated Press.

Asked if staffers who remain with the campaign, Mark Glanville and Will Ritter, ever received a badge from Garrity, Fehrnstrom told the AP: "I'm not going to comment beyond that. Jay Garrity has been put on leave, and any questions concerning him should be directed to his counsel."

A call by AP to Garrity's attorney was not immediately returned.

Garrity was an ever-present Romney aide, serving as his director of operations both in the Statehouse and on the campaign trail. He facilitated the presidential contender's travels and the public's access to him.

Come on guys, give the man a chance, see what he is standing for, see what he can do for America, it is just a couple of guys with poor judgment on his team. Look around, there are no Saints here.

Voting for Romney is like voting for Bush. A bad idea.

Yes, because the Dems never have any scandals, just the Rublicans. Why you just cited two examples to cinch that idea up. Great logic.

The article is about an unfounded accusation AFTER the guy went on leave for the original police stuff. He was already on leave, didn't get dismissed over this issue. Get your timelines straight.

"…Romney aide who is on leave for allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer in two states"

His own staff put him on leave. That means he did it.

Where do the Republicans find these people from? Guiliani has cocaine dealers running state campaigns, now this hoodlum working for Mitt?

Makes me wonder if it is the people that pick these weasels or are there by some coincedence just a lot of hoodlums out there that happen to be working for Republican presidential candidates???

Hmm…must be those liberal Boston newspapers to blame that's it.

This story originated with the Boston Herald, the tabloid of all modern newspapers.

The story is without proof, without pictures, without anyone willing to give a name on a statement, it's gossip by a journalist who hates Romney. I was surprised to see CNN pick this story up.

And then people automatically credit Romney with this screwball kid's actions, real or trumped up. The one sure thing about Romney is he is very generous with his time, resources and money, gives very large amounts to charity and this story is completely out of character.

If it comes from Boston Herald, you have to check the sources, and then Boston Herald didn't give any sources to check….Typical

They should have just looked for the flip flops on the feet. Dead giveaway that they were on Romney's staff!

Boy.. can everyone SEE the blatant bias at CNN?
1) Hillary in Charge in SC
2) Kucinich suffers food poisoning
3) Edwards gets another expensive hair cut
3) McCain to participate in Youtube Debate and promises to continue the fght
4) Former Romney aid used a fake badge
5) Fred Thompson provided aid to a pro-choice group in 1991

Please, CNN, use a little more camoflage in this ongoing effort and makes us at least FEEL as though you're attempting to be balanced!

Heh, not only does Romney have enough money to pay their tolls, but he encourages employees to abuse authority they don't even have. Is that what we can look forward to in a Romney presidency? God help us all.

Just call him Jay 'wannabe' Garrity. Where do our politicians pick these people up–off the internet?
