Thompson said Wednesday his campaign is on track.

HOUSTON (CNN) Republican Fred Thompson, still mulling a run for the White House, said Wednesday that recent campaign staff changes are simply part of the process.

“These are the kinds of things you do as you go along,” Thompson told reporters at Hobby Airport in Houston. “You make adjustments as you go along. We’re on track in that regard.”

Veteran GOP campaign adviser Tom Collamore resigned from his position at Friends of Fred Thompson on Tuesday. Thompson’s campaign announced that Spencer Abraham, former U.S. Energy Secretary and Michigan GOP senator, would come aboard as a top adviser, along with veteran Florida GOP strategist Randy Enright.

Thompson, clutching a state-appropriate cowboy hat as he addressed a group of supporters in the Lone Star State, said a decision to run would be made and announced “in the not-so-distant future.”

“It’s a matter of raising some money, and it’s a matter of getting your organization and your people together,” he said.

Fred Thompson is a perfect GOP standard bearer........empty suit, empty head, intellectually lazy.....but by gosh he LOOKS presidential!

Fred is the candidate to beat.

Jeff, Houston, Texas   July 26th, 2007 1:05 pm ET

Enjoy the Republican Kool-Aid, and nver question what they put in it either.

The thing is, you could be right, and that is what terrifies me. How much will it take for the American people to revolt against King George and his party? It scares me we have apparently not reached that point. and yes, we could get another Republican in the White House.

Thompson is Republican. Tainted from the start and not be trusted to even clean out a litter box.

How bad do things have to get people?

Wow there are a lot of negative comments on here...probably because CNN is removing (at least most of) the positive ones.

Fred Thompson looks to be the real deal to me. He has my financial support and vote when he declares.

Terry, Charleston SC   July 26th, 2007 8:32 am ET

Haha, Fred is pretty smart. While the other candidates are out there getting overexposed and making missteps (Obama I'm looking at you) Fred is gathering money and buzz. One of the big issues is that as soon as Fred declares, all of his TV shows and movies go off the air. So, for that reason alone he's best off waiting as long as possible.

Unless something major happens, he's getting a donation from me as soon as he declares, and my vote on election day.

In order to run for a public office, one needs either money or a message. Since Fred Thompson has no message, he has to look for money.

Ron Paul has a message, that is the reason people are flocking around him.

Fred you are a fraud! Democrat and Republican parties you are liars and sellouts! A new party has been formed named "Honor". Our website is coming very soon, so please keep checking my Blog for details.

It is time for the next generation to stand up and fight for what's right. Establishment you are warned, we do not come in peace!

Any combination of Fred, Newt or Huckabee might be enough for me to support Obama if it came to that choice.
Hopefully after he looks over the part and the script he will reject the role.

Of course, Thompson would love to be known as a "conservative." And so would the 50 or so Republican senators who voted to increase the National Debt limit by an additional $800,000,000,000 (that's eight hundred billion, by the way). But we know better than to believe that!

Dave, Lexington, KY   July 25th, 2007 5:19 pm ET

Why would anybody take him seriously? He's obviously running a campaign. The fact is, he's not ready to be in any debates because he's CLUELESS.

Calvin Oliver Las Vegas, NV   July 25th, 2007 5:18 pm ET

Children watch all the violence in movies and murder, why don't you stop showing that in your films. That has a great impact. A whole lot more in than cigarettes.

Bubba, Swainsboro GA   July 25th, 2007 4:57 pm ET

Umm, he can't decide if he's running or not? I'd vote for Borat before I'd consider him. But lady, how much more conservative can a guy be? He can't quite bring himself to act.

Gawd, I'm a Fred opponent, but even I'm appalled at that photograph. He looks like Dubya with 100,000 more miles.

Ryan, Columbus, OH   July 25th, 2007 3:54 pm ET

Wait a minute...

I thought he hadn't officially declared and therefore can't be running a campaign.

He didn't file a FEC campaign report last quarter. Isn't it illegal to run a campaign without filing with the FEC?
