An intern working for Senator Obama was arrested at the Des Moines airport.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An intern working for Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign was arrested Friday at the Des Moines airport after authorities flagged an outstanding arrest warrant for aggravated battery in Illinois.Derrick Lamon Johnson, 20, of Glen Carbon, Ill., was also charged with fleeing from justice.

Tommy Vietor, Iowa press secretary for the Obama campaign, said Johnson had been working for the campaign for about a month as an unpaid intern. Vietor said Secret Service agents learned of the arrest warrant during a criminal background check after Johnson was scheduled to drive in a campaign motorcade.

Johnson was booked into the Polk County Jail.

Obama was campaigning Friday in Adel and Winterset.

That shows Obama's lack of good judgment in selecting campaign members. How can he then select his cabinet members once he is elected, which is an illusion and narcissism by bunch of young voters, who never vote? Obama is 2004's Howard Dean. Remember, in 90's election, James Carvel said "It's the economy, stupid." I say now, "it's the experience, stupid." And that is Hillary Rodham Clinton…with lots of experience, knowledge, talent, and skill…

St, MD   July 28th, 2007 10:01 am ET

Providence…you really don't want to get into a judgement or "intern" debate. I think Hillary learned that lesson. The guy was an unpaid interin. If Hillary even had anyone willing to work for her for free God only knows what would show up. Maybe ML, you really don't want to go there.

Do you think Obama even knew this less than thirty day old intern? He has over 500+ people on his payroll and probably double that with interns around the country, get real. I guess you prefer the old baggage and LA Mayors/Former Presidents who should know better. What scares me, is what behavior she would tolerate with power. You're on the wrong side of the experience and youth vote debate.

"This shows Obama's lack of good judgement." Are you kidding me? Odds are he didn't even know this "unpaid intern." You talk about good judgement? Take a look at Obama's speech regarding the pending Iraq war in 2002. It is eloquent and more importantly, prophetic. I'd say that Obama's good judgement trumps Hilary's experience any time. Cheney, who is an ardent symbol old school Washington experience, got us into this mess in Iraq. I think Americans have had enough of Washington experience. . .

Beverly June Aksamit, Cleveland, Mo. 64734   July 28th, 2007 12:19 pm ET

I wish that Clinton & Obama supporters and the media and the candidates would back off of each other, this fighting is exactly what the Republicans want. Do any of you realize that these 2 candidates together constitute a winning ticket? I'm a Clinton supporter but I am not going to badmouth Obama.

Just having some fun, Boston, MA   July 28th, 2007 12:30 pm ET

Barack Obama. (I'm just poking fun at the guy whose only comment was, 'Ron Paul.')

NY   July 28th, 2007 12:32 pm ET

White people just tickle me. RI is just scared. Rich white people are just scared. Hilary represents the old ways. Her so called experience will keep the rich people rich and the poor people still poor. If Obama is the one to win it all there is going to be a lot of scared white people!

Kim, Atlanta, GA   July 28th, 2007 12:33 pm ET

Does this guy really think that Barack Obama "hand selected" an upaid intern. His ignorance shows comparing this to selcting cabinet members. No wonder he thinks Hillary is the better candidate.

BH, Madison, WI   July 28th, 2007 12:43 pm ET

My boyfriend is the field organizer in a different county of Iowa. He has met Obama threw “Walk for a Change Day” in June and introduced one of his many interns to Obama. With so many interns over such a large country, I can not imagine that Obama even has a slight clue who this guy is. It is easy to become an unpaid intern. It is basically volunteering. You have to understand that this “Unpaid intern” was picked to work the campaign NOT by Obama but by a Field organizer that runs just one county in Iowa. This field organizer has a regional organizer the runs most of the state and then he has a Midwest regional director, so you are not really working with Obama until you are running large portions of the campaign. This is just news story and nothing that relates to Obamas capability to hire adequate people. I am not an Obama supporter but I just wanted to let everyone know how this unpaid intern thing works.

Sean Kick, Kansas City, MO   July 28th, 2007 12:44 pm ET

Providence, Obama made one wrong recruitment, how many did Bush made? Think about that.

Jenny, Gainesville, FL   July 28th, 2007 12:49 pm ET

"Hillary has experience." is an ILLUSION. Obama has much longer public services as an elected officer than Hillary. Being the wife of a governer or president is one thing. Do you see the wife of your doctor if the doctor is not available? If there is any experience that Hillary can claim, it is the experience of playing politics. But that is not the experience the county needs right now. What is more important than experience is judgment. Hillary has neither. I am an independent. I will either vote for Obama if he is nominated or sit out the general election.

Josh, Chicago, Il   July 28th, 2007 1:07 pm ET

Anyone thinking that Hillary having more experience is an "illusion" is either being dishonest, or naive about Hillary and Obama's experience.

Also, while I'm not an Obama supporter, it's pretty obvious that he can't control all peripheral things involving his campaign, and he is no more at fault in this person being chosen, than Hillary being accused of faking an accent in the South. (Lies…she was speaking normally, and for a short excerpt of a Southern reading, she used inflection…to say she was pandering is ignorant, and dishonest also.)

Either way, their voting records are identical…Obama would also have voted for the resolution, IF he were in a position to do so…anyone saying other wise is ignorant of political maneuvering. I live in Chicago…Obama is not the greatest thing since sliced bread, trust.

Hillary! 08

Mike, Sacramento CA   July 28th, 2007 1:15 pm ET

I'm no fan of Obama & will campaign against him if he gate the Dem nomination, but it is highly unlikely he even knew who this kid was, much less that he had any hand in bringing him onto the campaign.

IF Obama DID know the kid and his history, and still brought him on, knowing that he would not pass a background check….that would be a story.

nothing to see here…move along…not the droids youre looking for.

J, Dubuque, Iowa   July 28th, 2007 1:23 pm ET

Providence, before speaking of the judgment, or lack thereof of Obama, you may want to read Matthew chapter 7.

Anon   July 28th, 2007 1:23 pm ET

I seriously doubt he personally screened every candidate. I'd imagine he will for his cabinet members. To the guy who said, "White people are just scared…" Don't be so ignorant…how dare you generalize people like that. Its racist, and I doubt you like racism.

Mark, Dunkirk, NY   July 28th, 2007 1:52 pm ET

Obama probably didn't know anything about this guy so to hold him on it is ridiculous. As for experience, we would have thought that Bush, with staff and a VP with over thirty years of experience would have helped, it didn't. So experience is not the final qualification.

I am a resident of NY and I am still waiting to see all the jobs Hillary Clinton promised in her first run in 2000. Instead we still have one of the worst economies in the country here in upstate NY. The only experience she is having is exercising her ego trip.

lavelle   July 28th, 2007 2:04 pm ET

for so many things Obama talks about this is news? come on Clinton News Network (CNN)

Mari, Phoenix, AZ   July 28th, 2007 2:13 pm ET

For sure, everyone associated with Obama is under scrutiny and a microscope. Looking in every little nook and crany for a morsel of dirt. "Someone(s)" must be worried about Obama's chance to become president! Oh… Well.

Ross, Philadelphia, PA   July 28th, 2007 2:26 pm ET

Ha, the fact that you think the candidates select every single member of their campaigns down to the unpaid interns is hilarious. I'm sure Barack Obama sits down behind a desk and personally interviews every college sophomore that wants to distribute pamphlets for him.

Fred, CA   July 28th, 2007 3:03 pm ET

BH and others,

You are all correct that Obama could not possibly know this person. But how does such a low level person find himself in a motorcade with a presidential candidate??? How "low level" can he be?

You all miss the point that there are serious gaps in Obama's organization. If it is so easy to get into a campaign, I'm sure that El Queda is already there. Heads would roll if something like this happened in my organization. Thankfully, our government has done its job here. One point for the Republicans.

Anonymous   July 28th, 2007 3:10 pm ET

That is a shame that this presidential canidate supports that type of behavior. I do not think we can ellect someone with this type of low moral standards. Well it is now either Rudy or Hillary.

David, San Francisco, CA   July 28th, 2007 3:12 pm ET

What a dumb story. Seriously CNN, how does this impact anyone?

kris, St. Paul, MN   July 28th, 2007 3:37 pm ET

This incident shows how negligent Obama is. I can't believe that he hires that can of person. I wonder what he will do if he elected. I am telling that Obama just hype.
His physique making him celebrity, it will not last long.

I am independent and leaning towards Hillary/Edwar.

CM, Greenville SC   July 28th, 2007 3:41 pm ET

I'm not an Obama fan but I have to agree that this was just an intern. He was probably a looser trying to fit in someplace. Remember it wasn't Obama himself arrested (this time). Give him a few more months.

Shawnie - Grants Pass, OR   July 28th, 2007 3:47 pm ET

I'm voting Republican, not for Obama. Nonetheless, it is ridiculous to see people try and pin this on Obama. I agree, don't you find it odd that none of Hillary's scandals great and small make it to CNN? Some one else coined the phrase "CNN - Clinton News Network". And they're right.

Eli, Marietta Ohio   July 28th, 2007 5:28 pm ET

What is CNN's beef with Obama? In the last two days I have counted the number of times that CNN has given negative and positive press to the 2008 Democratic Candidates. The Numbers speak for themselves. There were five stories that portrayed Obama in a negative light, compared to two times for Clinton, and one time for Edwards. The striking number is not just that Obama is getting negative press, it is the positive press that Clinton has received. I counted over six stories in the last two days portraying Clinton in a positive light, compared to only one for Obama and two for Edwards.

A story about an new unpaid intern being arrested is so insignificant for it to even be printed in the press is rediculous. I was an unpaid intern for a Senate Campaign last year, and I can tell you that I was pretty low down on the totem pole. I helped organize events but I was not an intergral part of the campaign. Obama has hundreds, probably even thousands of unpaid interns across the country. They are college students, and they help do things like hand out signs at events, phone banking, and participate in organizing events. This wasn't a paid staff position.

My point is, I believe that CNN is being unfair in its reporting. Six positive stories for Hillary Clinton, and one for Obama. I have noticed a pattern of negative stories seemingly to try to portray certain candidates in negative light, while boosting other candidates. I don't know that you can call yourself "the most trusted name in news" when you consistantly demonstrate bias in your reporting.

MW   July 28th, 2007 5:30 pm ET

Voting Republican is idiotic. If that's what you do, you have only yourself to blame when the country doesn't rebound from this administration's dangerous doing. And who cares if Obama's one intern, one of hundreds, was arrested. It's one insignificant event. And you people are insane going back to the CNN mockery. CNN along with ABC, NBC, CBS and of course, Faux News, shys away from anything controversial involving this lunatic in the White House. None of them ever report real news.

Geoff, Princeton, NJ   July 28th, 2007 5:58 pm ET

People throwing this on Obama are uneducated.

But beyond that… we need more Ron Paul coverage, immediately. Now. Go CNN, get Ron Paul's name on the Political Ticker… You've only posted one thing about him so far.

Andrew   July 28th, 2007 6:57 pm ET

If you are making the experience argument , then no Richardson wins that one hands down. Hilary has been senator for 6 years and that is where her experience ends. I didn't know that being first lady gave you any experience to lead and I don't know why people think it does.

Lance, Los Angeles, CA.   July 28th, 2007 7:40 pm ET

To me, Obama is a visionary leader. He has far more experience in the real world than Clinton or any of the other candidates. Everything I hear and read about him furthers this. He was a civil rights attorney, he worked to rise people above their stations. He is the kind of leader that comes along once a generation if we’re lucky. I’ve just read “the Audacity of Hope” and it was so stirring, so clear, so clearly written not by a ghost writer but in the voice of the man himself. Barry Obama is the real deal, he’s the sort of fighter that we need oh so desperately in these trying times. I would go door to door for this candidate, I would believe he would look at any issue either foriegn or domestic with clear eyes and make decisions that were both humane and smart for our country and the world. The other candidates all strike me as fodder for lobbists, career politicians. I remember how moved I was when I heard his speech during Kerry’s convention. He is indeed a uniter, someone who can bring this sadly divided dis union back into union again. People will put paintings and photos on their walls of this man in the same way they do JFK or MLK. Mark my words, America and the world will prosper under President Obama. To see that happen I’d gladly travel to Ohio, to South Carolina, to Iowa, or anywhere else I needed to go to ensure he gets a fair shot. That’s all the man needs, is one good fair shot. Given his due he’ll do us right. Do the research. Don’t be a lemming. Read about him, read his own words. They aren’t sound bites, they’re living, breathing, human thoughts full of compassion and common sense, stength and integrity. Really look at this candidate. Do your kids and their kids the biggest favor of our lives.

I am not for or against Obama…

but to those who are against Hillary - it's time to buy a New Hat…or Tape…
The old, CNN is pandering to Hillary vs. Obama it really getting monotonous.
It's Almost as bad as, your - Hillary doesn't have experience line - yeah right… Given President Bush's track record - I wouldn't bring up experience as a Presidential Pre-requisite as it certainly couldn't have been mandatory when Bush was running.

Hillary has more wisdom, diplomacy, international savy and credibility in her little pinky finger than Bush has in his entire body.

Kyu Reisch, Radcliff, Kentucky   July 29th, 2007 12:34 am ET

One wrong recruitment? What about 74 second Anti-Hillary video? Obama denied, he may not interview every intern but at least his political directions of course should be instituted. It doesn't matter who did but Obama is responsible. Why Lt. General was punished for soldier's death by friendly shooting even he is retired? Obama's staffs played several dirty games, like Memo to the Media, video and reckless interns. NY citizen, you forgot that Up State NY people elected Hillary for Senator. Hillary has more than sixty positive stories, I would like to see more about her. Obama scares me and his campaign threatens America's future. Obama's aim is beating Hillary, Hillary's goal is beating Republican and leading our Country to the right direction.

Kyu Reisch, Radcliff, Kentucky   July 29th, 2007 8:52 am ET

"Doctor's wife is available when Dr. is not available" if she has the license. This illustration is illogical. Your life is exact your experience. Where was Obama in 1970's?Obama has longer public service than Hillary? Tell us about it. Hillary was elected the leader from her childhood when Obama wasn't born yet. You should read her "Living History" first.

William Tremper Jersey City NJ 07304   July 29th, 2007 9:59 am ET

GIVE ME A BREAK! Sir William

Jim Atlanta GA   July 29th, 2007 12:51 pm ET

Lets face the facts. There ARE people that fear a Black candidate. They let their racism slide into and distort their decision making.

As far as "One for the Republicans", that could only mean "One more idiot has decided to vote Republican". The Repubs have gotten us into a war that has cost well over 500 billion dollars and cost the lives ofover 3000 Americans and see NO WAY out and we STILL don't have Bin Laden.(Remember him? Skinny guy with a beard, dirty sheet wrapped around his head?)They lead a corrupt congress fill with liars, theives and pediphiles.

Now we have a chance to REALLY make a change. The opportunity to have a woman or African American president. As far as experience, Bush never sucessfully ran anything that I am aware of. My freinds from the great state of Texas claim "He was a better president than Govenor". WOW, that says a lot.

Perhaps a Obama/Clinton ticket is the way to go. Let's not let the "evil empire" rock this boat before it even gets in the water.

Will - Miami, Fl   July 29th, 2007 3:32 pm ET

Voting republican is "idiotic"?? Voting for someone because of sex or race is idiotic. Voting conservative is smart - it's a shame that the Bush administration are more like liberals and spend way too much money not to mention wanting to open our borders.

Those of you that think a democrat will "save the day" are very badly mistaken. What WILL "save the day" however, is something NEW. Both parties have let America down. They are both corrupt. Most politicians in Washington are part of the deeply rooted "establishment" and care nothing for the average American (black, white, fmale, male, gay, poor, etc). They only care about power and more of it.

We need someone like Ron Paul to shake up Washington!

K.G. Hopkins, Birmingham AL   July 29th, 2007 5:41 pm ET

I volunteered for the Obama campaign in Alabama. All that was required was a willingness to fight against gravity, climbing hills in a targeted neighborhood on a hot, muggy day distributing literature and talking to anyone who would listen. Senator Obama was in another part of the country and had no idea that I was working on his behalf. However, when I was interviewed by a newspaper reporter, I was noted as an Obama campaign supporter. If my record had included a criminal offense, would Senator Obama be criticized for poor judgment? Of course not. I am amused by the cheap shot intended to hurt the senator's presidential candidacy and feel confident that it will backfire.

John, Royersford, PA   July 29th, 2007 9:08 pm ET

CNN has not taken a "cheap shot" at Sen. Obama by reporting that the Secret Service's criminal background check of someone working on his campaign had an outstanding arrest warrant. They merely reported this as a news item. They drew no conclusions.

If others want to draw conclusions from this, these will generally reflect their own character. Those who want to claim that this arrest is somehow a reflection on Obama's character will show themselves unwillingly to draw the reasonable conclusion that he, more than likely, was not even aware of this person. Campaigns generally do not run criminal background checks on unpaid interns.

But don't blame the media in this case for merely reporting the arrest. Since it involved a Presidential candidate's campaign and the Secret Service, it is a valid news item. It is not like CNN made this a bigger deal that it is.

Mark Billingsley   July 30th, 2007 3:56 am ET

Hey Kyu, do some basic research will ya. Obama has eight years as Illinois state senator and half as much time in the U.S. senate as Hillary. Hillary has seven TOTAL years as an elected official. Are you really going to count an elementary school election, or some sort, as experience? Please do, I'd love to see her bring that up in the next debate. Illogical? My wife has been a doctor for 20 years and I've attended many a symposium and conference with her all over the world. Does that make me experienced and qualified to practice medicine? By using your logic, Obama's years spent living outside this country makes him even MORE qualified to lead the world's most powerful country. And Will from Miami…come on man, "both parties are corrupt, that's why we need Ron Paul." Ah, last time I checked it said (R-TEX) next to his name. Josh from Chicago..come on man. Your senior senator Dick Durbin didn't even vote for the resolution to give Bush his weapons of mass destruction, so how would Obama have been pressured to vote for it, especially after being all Nostradamus-like in 2002?

OBAMA '08!!

marcus, st. louis missouri   July 30th, 2007 8:19 pm ET

its really funny that all you people are more than willing to blame President Bush for when one of his staff members did something poorly, but are willing to give obama a free pass about one of his staffers. the buck stops at the top and the blame falls 100% on Obama. Also, the defeat-o-crats can either pick a winner out of the primary(see clean cut white boy edwards, or loose another election by trying to win a moral victory by picking the black or woman–but you can't have both.
