Romney re-released an ad focusing on illegal immigration.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Less than two weeks before Iowa's straw poll, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has re-released an ad focusing on the contentious issue of illegal immigration.

"People who are here illegally are going to have to get in line with everyone else, with no special pathways to become a citizen," Romney says in the ad. "Legal immigration is great, but illegal immigration, that we've got to end."

In the ad, Romney criticizes employers that hire illegal immigrants, and calls for a federal database that lists the names of legal workers.

The ad, which originally aired in a longer format in May, has been trimmed down to 30 seconds. It hit Iowa's airwaves on Tuesday.

Hey "Trish" from some other country, his tax dollars along with mine go to support these ILLEGALS. We also support LEGAL immigrants as THEY are what made this country great.

Sorry if we don't meet the Canadian standard, but our country helps and supports more downtrodden people than your little tourist destination ever thought of.

ILLEGAL immigration is killing this country and we need to stop it whether you or Shrillary like it or not.

So first hes against securing the borders, and now hes for it? Get those flip flops ready.

Texrat, Fort Worth, TX   August 1st, 2007 7:38 am ET

Oh boy, working citizens filing into another national database. I can't wait.

HeatherB   August 1st, 2007 2:16 am ET

Romney hired a LEGAL company to manage his property. THAT company, unbeknownst to Romney, hired illegals. It was a smear story. Romney has been tough on illegal immigraton for years — before everyone else caught on. He fought against driver's licenses for illegals and opposed tuition breaks for illegals that were supposed to be only for citizens back in 03 and 04. He also supported Englisn immersion in the schools while governor or Massachusetts. He realizes we need to secure the border and enforce the laws that we have.

Romney… here's a guy that strapped his cocker spaniel to the roof of his car for a cross state 12 hour trip on the interstate in Summertime and it wall caught on tape for a documentary on him at the time, circa 1988.

To me, this is the perfect analogy for what he'd do to our country. He'd be blindly racing us down the freeway of life while we were the dog, hanging on for dear life and hoping he doesn't make the next right turn too sharply.

Please look at Barry Obama if you'd like to have some semblance of reality and decency and real world smarts back in the White House.

The thing with the dog may be trivial, but to me, it points out exactly how out of touch Romney really is.

At least someone is finally saying it. Secure the borders and then deal with the ILLEGALS in the country. Heck, I say legalize them all after no one can cross the border without the proper processing. Mr Navarette - what is wrong with this plan?

Tricia M Charlottetown PEI   July 31st, 2007 11:46 pm ET

Well gee with all his houses and beach houses you'd think he'd have a heart and give at least half of the illegals a place to seek shelter from the storm! He could get his landscaping done for room and board. He might even be able to claim them and save on those heavy taxes he's paying. And wouldn't a bonifide true Christian want to support the disenfranchised and spat upon?

Tom Dedham, Mass   July 31st, 2007 9:10 pm ET

Hey Vinnie, I recently got some windows put in and the guy I talked too was not an illegal, but when it came to do the work (while I was at work by the way), it was done by a load of illegal immigrants and not one of them spoke the language.

Does that mean I now support illegal immigrants? Nah, don't think so.

So you "so enlightened" that are bashing Republicans (except the idiot president) for wanting to enforce our laws and help the lower end people and middle class get fair wages, any of you have children in public schools or go to an ER lately? It is bleeped up because of these non-citizens.

I'll write this slow so you understand, many of us regardless of political idealogy, LOVE and CHERISH LEGAL immigration no matter the color, but are AGAINST ILLEGAL immigration for EVERYONE again regardless the color.

You losers drop the bigot, racist, mean Republicans mantra when it is many Americans that feel this way.

While I agree with Mitt-flop Romney regarding our broken borders his proposed database is stupid. There is already a database for legal workers. It's called the Social Security system.

If the United States enforced the laws already on the books barring companies from hiring illegal and undocumented workers the issue would resolve itself. Without jobs the illegals would not swarm across the border. Instead they would stay in their native countries or immigrate through legal channels.

And Navarette needs to take a good hard look at the economics of illegal immigration. Many of these undocumented workers are not adding to the United States economy. They are sending their dollars across the border to their native countries.

Illegal immigration also drives down the wages of legal workers. Why would a business pay a living wage to a legal worker when they can hire an illegal and pay them less? Businesses also pay less or no tax for an undocumented worker. The worker is typically paid cash under the table or classified as contract labor, making the worker responsible for paying the taxes. Navarette has it all wrong and he knows it.

Once all those illegal workers become legal are they going to be willing to earn less money, have no unemployement insurance, and what about health care? Of course they are not. They are going to want the same wage and benefits other legal workers are getting.

If businesses are not held accountable for employing undocumented workers the problem is compounded further by even more illegals coming into the country after the illegals already here become citizens. We say this after the last amnesty agreement during the mid 1980's. Senator Kennedy said the amnesty would not lead to more illegals, but less. Well surprise Mr. Kennedy, here we are with millions of illegals all over again.

Matthew, Charlotte   July 31st, 2007 5:54 pm ET

Brilliant John - lets make this a race issue. What's up spin doctor? Why do people have such a problem with having legal workers in this country, no matter if they are brown, white, black or green? Good luck Romney - this country needs someone with real experience.

Enrique, Chicago, IL   July 31st, 2007 5:32 pm ET

How about giving us an original idea Mitt? Tell us something that we don't know for a change.

Anonymous   July 31st, 2007 5:03 pm ET

sad that there are fools who take this FLIP FLOPPIN' CLOWN seriously.

Scott Austin, TX   July 31st, 2007 4:34 pm ET

Wait a while, you'll see him flip-flop on this one, too.

Paul, Miami, FL   July 31st, 2007 4:28 pm ET

John Kerry is a smart man but was a stunned presidential candidate who thought too much about the issues. Mitt Romney is the true FLIP FLOPPER: abortion, stem cell research, same gender marriage, liberal becomes conservative, etc., etc. What would Romney do in the White House? "Well I'm Mormon, well, no I'm actually Jewish, no Catholic. Wait! The Saudis will give me how much money? OK. I'm Muslim." If a republican wins the White House the problem in the USA will be emigration, NOT immigration.

DPC, Rowlett, TX   July 31st, 2007 4:13 pm ET

I say amen to MJL. Amen.

MJL, Camas WA   July 31st, 2007 3:55 pm ET

Illegal immigration. The nomenclature says it all. Illegal. Now CNN's raving resident Hispanic columnist, Mr. Navarette wwill have us believe that the fault lies with us, and not the hundreds of thousands of his countryman by lineage effectively invading this country unhindered to escape that bastion of cultural perfection at our Southern border. Using Mr. Navarette's biased 'logic' my French lineage would then justify the invasion of America by discontented Frenchmen to come here and take over our cheese and wine (whine?) industries. It is our own fault indeed that nationalism to an ancestral homeland has and continues to take precedence over being an American for those in the Hispanic community. They are continually held as the victims in this discussion, and should simply be handed the keys to the kingdom, since after all, the over whelming majority will vote Democrat. Perhaps the most telling difference between the Republican and Democrat camps, is that the Dems would sell out this country for votes. No matter the cost.

John Atlanta   July 31st, 2007 3:48 pm ET

Will all AMerican have to register in this "database" to work or just the brown ones? Republicans must have their hate issues to gather their mobs.

Vinny, Boston, MA   July 31st, 2007 3:31 pm ET

Romney was recently caught with an illegal immigrant doing his landscaping. Perhaps he should be criticizing himself and calling for a more secure fence around his multi-million dollar estate.
