Tancredo: Threaten to bomb Muslim holy sites in retaliation

Republican presidential hopeful Tom Tancredo

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo's campaign stood by his assertion that bombing holy Muslim sites would serve as a good "deterrent" to prevent Islamic fundamentalists from attacking the United States, his spokeswoman said Friday.

"This shows that we mean business," said Bay Buchanan, a senior Tancredo adviser. "There's no more effective deterrent than that. But he is open-minded and willing to embrace other options. This is just a means to deter them from attacking us."

On Tuesday, Tancredo warned a group of Iowans that another terrorist attack would "cause a worldwide economic collapse." IowaPolitics.com recorded his comments.

"If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina," Tancredo said. "That is the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they would otherwise do. If I am wrong, fine, tell me, and I would be happy to do something else. But you had better find a deterrent, or you will find an attack."

Tom Casey, a deputy spokesman for the State Department, told CNN's Elise Labott that the congressman’s comments were "reprehensible" and "absolutely crazy." Tancredo was widely criticized in 2005 for making a similar suggestion.

This moron is over-the-top ridiculous, even for a Repugnicon. Anyone who takes him seriously needs to be deleted from the gene pool before they breed.

oh my god, this is hilarious. you can't make up stupidity like the stuff the amazing Mr. Tnacredo dreams up! and having Bay Buchanan chiming in makes it even more delicious. Vote for Tancredo, if only for the nonstop laughs!

Idiotic and unChristian does not begin to describe his remarks. We can defeat Islam again as we have for centuries, with power and charity in equal measures. You don't win converts or those in the middle by attacking non-military targets. By his logic, the Vatican and all Christian holy sites are fair targets. Tancredo is not credible. End the campaign now. Please.

Oh for heaven's sake! What kind of a MORON is this guy??? This makes us better than the terrorists??? What about all the law abiding, Koran-following Muslims who worship at those sites and are just as appalled at the deeds of terrorists as we are??? This just exhibits your ignorance of the world and other religions and your bigotry! Shame on you, you IDIOT!!!!!!

As a Muslim, I'm a bit confused to hear a fellow American speak this way. The truth is that his logic is as faulty as all those fanatics' that he fears so much. Their thinking is "we hate America, let's bomb a mall." Huh? What?!? His "strategy" does nothing to address the threat these fanatics pose. Imagine their side of things, if they can get him to bomb the holy sites, it would be a monumental PR coup for them. They'll no longer need a reason to recruit. Period.

This guy is a nut job. Attacking Muslim holy sites would turn the whole Muslim world against us. That includes the Muslims living in our own country. This guy wants to be our president?

I think its pretty obvious this guy is trying to make headlines. Even if he didnt mean what he said...does he not see how easily his statement can be used by Al Queada for the purposes of recruitment. We're lucky the terror threat level didnt go up after that comment.

Don't be naive. We have NO allies in the mid-east. And israel is a bully and should never have been created. Religion is a societal crutch anyway – a way to control a populace afraid of death. So, tell the 'good', 'sane' citizens that we're going to make the mideast a quiet desert for a few thousand years and kill whoever is dumb enough to stick around that miserable piece of land.

An excellent idea, Mr. Tancredo! We will gather the Tiberium in the Arab states, and our Black Hand troops and Scorpion Tanks will occupy the Great Pyramid at Giza. Our Obelisks will take over the global networks. Then victory and global domination will be ours! Praise be to Nod!

(seriously, if Tom Tancredo wants to act like a crazy supervillian from a computer game, then let's treat him like a crazy supervillian from a computer game.)

The plethora of negative comments on this page is indicative of the fact that 9/11 and those responsible for planning it and financing it is just a distant memory for most. As some other posters pointed out it's basically the same as mutually assured destruction. And, God forbid, if a nuclear dirty bomb happens to hit the city in which you live and it is determined that the attack was carried out by citizens of our "friend" Saudi Arabia, a country whose Government funds mosques that teach hate and violence and train their people for this kind of action, and financed by their Government, who cleverly disguises and muddies the water when it comes to the question of whether they finance terroritst, then you might be singing a different song. The "kingdom" has been promoting terrorism with little fear of repurcussion for far too long.

Tancredo's resolution proves that he is nothing more than a dullard. By bombing Muslim holy sites, more fundamentalists will will join in jihad against the US, and there will be nothing short of a bloodletting- the size of which we have only seen in the movies. Honestly, how can Tancredo even fathom such an idea as viable? Is this the best we can put in government? And you wonder why the world hates us. It isn't because of our freedom; the swiss are free and nobody bombs them. The problem is our terrible foreign policy which idiots like dullard can only worsen...

I totally agree with Tom. If a Bully attacks hit them where it hurts. You cannot reason with these insane fanatics. Being a pacifist sounds nice but it doesnt seem to ever accomplish anything.

    I love the idea.
Why be the world super power and not stand up for ourselves?
It didn't take Japan too long to figure it out.
    Strike us, we destroy you.
    Makes sence to me.

Since the Mahommedans are not overly concerned about their own lives, yet have an obsession about many geographic locations as "holy land" this might be the one thing that will at least make them reconsider their murderous, terrorist actions.

I agree! That's a powerfull threat & one they most likely will take seriously! It's about time for some tough talk from Washington. I'm sick of these whiners, including our current president. Could weadopt this guy to run for president? PLEASE!

The masses continue to believe that Islam is a religion of peace hijacked by a terroristic minority. Perhaps these types of threats/actions will force the masses of "peaceful" Muslims into action to police their own. That is assuming these "peaceful" Muslims exist.

That is the perhaps thee dumbest foreign policy statement that has ever been made by a member of the United States government. What an idiot. Such action would create millions of new terrorists that would not hesitate to turn America into a perpetual war zone. Such actions would feed right into the the lies propogated by Osama Bin Laden and Ayman Al Zahari. They teach that the west seeks to invade and over run Muslim lands and destroy Islam. Bombing Mecca and Medina would prove them 100% percent correct even moderate / liberal Muslims.

How would Catholics respond if the Vatican was bombed by a foreign country? Millions would demand retaliation and hundreds of thousands would be willing to sacrifice their lives in order to do so.

Great Idea. Let's cut the BS. Why are our lives, society and families any less valuable than theirs. Deport Muslims pull out of the middle east and spend everything we have to get rid of oil. The truth is that Bush is Islam's greatest asset. He will never go against the oil industry and he loves the Saudis who publish school books about killing us. No one has figured out that the oil industry is Saudi arabia. We are going to be the first society that bought and paid for the weapons that killed us.

Actually, this may be an eventuality if things continue. We should never apologize to Islam, for Muhammad was a stone cold killer of innocent people-and WWMD (What Would Muhammad Do?) shapes Islamic thinking.
And their thinking, is their Achilles Heel. We should have already adopted a defillation policy if we weren't so maddeningly PC...in other words, FEED TERRORIST BODIES TO HOGS; and that will deter them quite a bit by denying them access to Paradise.

Someone said the Saudis wouls shut off oil to us if we bombed mecca....
NO WAY! They have nothing else to sell but sand, and we already have sand here. They would still love to sell us the oil. Did Muslims care who they killed here? They are born to kill... time to face the fact we are in a "holy war".

Hmmm isn't this like threatening to blow up St. Peters because some fighters in, let's say, Ireland, happened to be Catholic? I don't think threats to holy places of devout millions are any kind of deterrent to the relatively few radicals and would only galvanize people against the U.S.
