I think there are two elements to the question of candidates families.

One is the extent to which they are fair political game. I think this is up to them. Certainly Elizabeth Edwards, Jeri Thompson Kehn and Bill Clinton are political figures and open to criticism. On the other hand, Cindy McCain, Ann Romney and Barbara Richardson seem to keep lower profiles and deserve substantially more privacy.

The second element is the degree to which spouses and other family members are assets to the campaign. I don’t think Elizabeth Edwards has done her husband any favors this week, but he’s playing catch-up so I could be wrong. Giuliani’s continuing family soap opera is clearly a liability.
And the most famous candidate spouse, Bill Clinton brings a mixed blessing, combining more than a whiff of scandal with prodigious political and fund-raising skills. So far I’d have to say Michelle Obama has struck exactly the right note.

I do believe candidate’s children should be accepted as campaigners but exempted from attacks and media scrutiny. Giuliani’s daughter’s Facebook page, the Romney boys military status, and Chelsea’s boyfriend’s intentions are none of my business.

Reply to NY Pat:

Gov. Romney does not advocate or practice polygamy.

LDS members have only one wife. Your assumption is like saying every American-Muslim is a terrorist.

Pat from NY, NY, Romney has had one wife for almost 40 years with no skeletons at all. Sorry he is not the bleeped up family type like Rudy G and Shrillary Clinton.

Typical loud mouth, but knows nothing New yorker. Go get a slice and read something, you could use it.

"In the latest edition of Strategy Session"

Should read:
In the latest edition of CNN's Democratic Strategy Session, our overtly bias panel attacks another republican position without presenting any facts.

Last time I checked, CNN, Bill Clinton was a "husband" not a "wife."

I really resent the title of this article. Why can't we use spouses? Hillary is running, and she doesn't have a wife.
