Giuliani's new media consultants created a controversial ad, above, targeting former Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford, Jr.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential contender Rudy Giuliani has a new team of media consultants with a strong record of electing GOP candidates, sometimes using controversial ads.

The team is led by Heath Thompson and his Dallas-based firm, Scott Howell & Company. Thompson, as director of President Bush's 2000 campaign in South Carolina, helped Bush to an 11-point victory in that state.

Last year, a commercial made by Thompson's firm for Tennessee's U.S. Senate race was criticized for what the NAACP and others said were racial overtones.

Run by the Republican National Committee against Democrat Harold Ford, who is black, the ad showed a white woman saying she had met Ford at a Playboy-sponsored party. As the ad ended, the woman, her shoulders bared, whispered into the camera, "Harold, call me."

The NAACP said the commercial played to prejudices about black men and white women, and Republican Bob Corker, who won the Senate seat, called the ad tacky. The RNC denied any racial subtext but asked TV stations to stop running the commercial.

The firm's client roster has included Sens. John Thune of South Dakota, Norm Coleman of Minnesota, Jim DeMint of South Carolina, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia and Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas. Clients who lost 2006 Senate races include former Rep. Mark Kennedy of Minnesota, former Sen. Jim Talent of Missouri and Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard in Michigan.

Also on the Giuliani team are Chris Mottola and Associates, BrabenderCox and Crossroads Media, a media services firm. Chris Mottola was a consultant to former New York Gov. George Pataki; John Brabender advised former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Giuliani adviser Chris Henick said: "This group will be instrumental in communicating Mayor Giuliani's strong leadership, proven record as an experienced executive and optimistic vision to Americans."

James of Phoenix AZ -

At a time when America is at war, when 40 million of us are without health insurance, when the deficit and debt are out of control, when foreclosures are soaring, when our borders are porous, when our ecosystem is in peril, when our national reputation is in shreds, when thousands are dying… Do you really think your slimy little recap of a decade old sex scandal that everybody knows about already is worthy of our political debate?

Get your head out of the barrel, James. We’ve got real work to do out here.

Good Riddance !!!!!!!
It's not a question of which party will benefit from Gonzales' departure. The whole country will benefit. Under Gonzales, the Justice Department was reduced to nothing but a political tool. Good Riddance.

[...] This story was on Chattanooga's ABC affiliate Friday evening — it looks like Giuliani has hired the firm responsible for the "Harold, call me!" ad to help him appeal to the values of Southerners since they did such a good job last fall.  Actually, that's not the reason but at this point it would be a darn good one.  [...]

Have you ever thought of publishing your material? There are several companies out there looking for good Fiction Thrillers.

I don't know how the republicans can call themselves the party of 'inclusion' when they are so 'devide and conquer'

How can the Christianists support such dirty party politics?

Guilliani would be more of Bush. I think we have all had enough of Bush. That is why these states keep pushing up their primary dates … we all wish the election could be tomorrow.

"Get real folks. With the GOP there is no such thing as bottom of the barrel."

Actually, Mr Russell, Geraldo Rivera did an expose on "the barrel" sending cameras deep into the darkness hoping the hit bottom. There was a clink - assuming it was the bottom Geraldo wanted to see what was beneath so they sent down metal shears. Cutting and peeling away the metal the diver feel out of the barrel into the Oval office - interrupting President Clinton and Monica.

There is a bottom! And things lower!

Mindy Chatsworth, Ca.   August 24th, 2007 1:05 pm ET

I am not surprised that Giuliani has assembled this tawdry group of media advisers, aka hatchet men. We can expect a dirty campaign once more from the Republicans. After all, what else do they really have to offer? They have no constructive solutions to the difficult problems facing this country, they have no answers for the mess in Iraq, except to question the patriotism of those who want to bring our troops home. They are not interested in the plight of the working middle class, nor do they have any intention of rolling back that huge tax cut for the wealthiest two percent of the population that has helped to create the biggest deficit in our history.

Giuliani is used to playing hardball and this is his insurance against the attacks on his character and personal life that have already begun. He has to do something to distract from his despicable behavior when he blatantly carried on with his mistress in Gracie Mansion while he was still married to Donna Hanover. So he has to put others on the defensive. He was a tough player when he was mayor of New York and he wasn't afraid to do a little mudslinging.

Giuliani specialized in divide and conquer tactics when he was mayor of New York, and minorities suffered from police brutality while he sang the praises of the police department. He has nothing to offer except his reincarnation as the poster boy for the war on terror. He is trying to reinvent himself as the great warrior and defender of our nation and is not above using the tragedy of 9/11 to benefit his political ambitions.

I expect things to get really ugly if he does get the nomination and Hillary Clinton is the Democratic candidate. But this could backfire against him. It is just possible that Americans may be fed up with this type of smear campaigning. Rove's tactics didn't help the Republicans keep control of Congress in last year's midterm elections. I hope that if he does resort to gutter politics, the American people will turn their backs and repudiate him.

RA Las Vegas, NV   August 24th, 2007 12:09 pm ET

Rudy Giuliani gets sleazier by the minute. He is just the leader of the rotten politician rat pack of all candidates today. All the others should follow him too the bottom of the barrel. There is not one good choice out of the whole closed minded wicked bunch. Ennie, Mennie, Minnie, Moe catch a politician by the toe. If he hollers make pay, fifty million dollars every day. Get the rest?

Linda Carpenter, Phoenix, Arizona   August 24th, 2007 11:47 am ET

Will every American voter FINALLY see through these
evil messengers who think nothing of flasehood, smears, and personal attacks?
Guiliani is a fascist who would be even worse in the White Hose than the Bush crime family. America, fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice, well, you know the saying.
Vote against anyone who does slime bag ads.

Rich Orlanodo, FL   August 24th, 2007 10:05 am ET

Birds of a feather flock together, Mr. Giuliani. No surprise here.

RE: Ron in Astoria, Jeff in Santa Cruz,

Bravo! My thoughts exactly. Wouldn't it be nirvana if the only ads we saw had some element of honor in them and the candidates justified the reasoning used for a proposed policy or stance and why they think it has merit rather than, "Don't vote for this guy, he's a bum!"

I too, am sick of all of the negativity in politics and I think the current approval numbers of the President and Congress show that the country is as well.

Have a great day,

Chip

Oh, yeah, riiight, sure, unh huh, you bet, Sparky. We'll just have to "wait & see" what kind of ads these cretins dump on us.

I'd opine that what they'll do for Rudy exactly what they've done for other Repooplicans: spew racist, homophobic, bigoted and slanderous garbage instead of engaging in a thoughtful dialogue on the issues.

See? And, I didn't even have to wait?

Republicans are consumed with Power. They are dividers and not uniters. This past almost 7 years has been devastating for our country and our world. The Republicans will do ANYTHING for a vote. They have brainwashed otherwise good Christian people in to thinking that they are a party of Saints when actually they are wolves hiding in sheep's clothing. Be smart America in 2008! Please give whoever wins on the Democrat side a chance to get our country turned back around. We owe it to our country. Thanks!

Tricia M Charlottetown PEI   August 23rd, 2007 11:40 pm ET

Frankly I'm not surprised that Giuliani is using the Thompson Firm given he is a Republican and a Bush Clone.

Hopefully the Thompson Firm uses the same racial undertones in Giuliani Ads. I think it is only just that Republicans should show their true colors.

Hillary is getting closer to the White House every day! I couldn't be happier. Soldier on Rudy!

Christian, Palmetto FL   August 23rd, 2007 11:17 pm ET

Great. Giuliani gets more sleazy by the minute.

This must be a time of desperation for the Republican party. They get more and more dirty, rude, and sensational all the time, just because now they're in the minority. Do any of them have the interests of America at heart instead of the interests of conservatives?

Jeff, Santa Cruz, CA   August 23rd, 2007 9:06 pm ET

Wouldn't it be nice if just to try something different, the American voting public would out-and-out reject this kind of slime. It takes truth and critical focus away from the campaigns, and draws people's attention to things that shouldn't matter one bit. The masses too often fall for it, and wonder why we don't have many real and decent leaders. I'm very disappointed in Giuliani even supporting this kind of 'dialog', let alone hiring this firm to represent him…no wait, to MISrepresent his competitors.

Ron, Astoria, NY   August 23rd, 2007 8:44 pm ET

When will America wake up from its slumber? It's the same grotesque snippets of ugliness every four years, played as a game to dupe the people so as to ultimately enrich the politico's big monied benefactors. It's time for honest, humane and non-manipulative leadership.

HAWK,TEXAS   August 23rd, 2007 8:43 pm ET

I BELIEVE THAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS THE DIRTIEST, ROTTEN, SLEAZIEST, CORRUPT, LYING,THEIVING, BUNCH OF THUGS THAT EVER LIVED.AND RUDY IS WITH THEM UP TO HIS BALD SPOT.

The commerical has a negitive over tone. The company that made the commerial knew it would have a negitive reaction. In America it comes down to two things race and money.

NB, North Carolina   August 23rd, 2007 8:18 pm ET

well what a stupid move for him - so since these guys attact the black guy with a stupid add we should think that they now want this group to go after say - romney? i can see it clear as day they will put out some kind of stupid add attacking him - but unlike for silly ford - it will back fire and someone else other than Giuliani will be president….this was very silly move on there part. very.

sara davis   August 23rd, 2007 8:12 pm ET

This is not suprising, Guiliani is one of the biggest bigots in politics today
he only "tolerates" the minorites in the room.He is a hateful man.

Joe, Moore, OK   August 23rd, 2007 8:02 pm ET

I heard the woman the ad is not white, but Hispanic.

Bob, San Francisco, CA   August 23rd, 2007 7:59 pm ET

Sadly, the majority of voters in this country are feeble-minded enough to buy into these types of smear campaigns/propaganda.
This goes for the left and the right (and in between!):(

AnIndependent, The Villages, FL   August 23rd, 2007 7:57 pm ET

Why are you surprised? I know Giuliani well as Mayor of NYC and divisive and dirty are his middle names! Integrity is not there!

NAACP think something is racist? no way! not everything that reflects poorly on a person of a different race is a reflection of their race…it actually could be a reflection of their character.

Raulin Angulo Richmond VA.   August 23rd, 2007 7:52 pm ET

Calling a Republican a racist is an oximoron

Randy, Charleston SC   August 23rd, 2007 7:50 pm ET

I was working for McCain in SC in 2000 when this crowd sent out the "McCain in favor of partial birth abortion" just before the primary and started the rumors about McCain's 'illegitimate black child'. (McCain has an adopted SE Asian daughter). Using this firm reflects on Rudy's character just as it has proven it reflected on Bush's. Rudy=Bush in character if not in policy.

Joe Memphis, TN   August 23rd, 2007 7:44 pm ET

Hello this is Guiliani. For people not from NYC google Guiliani, Abner Louima and Amadu Diallou. He used racial politics when he ran against David Dinkins in NYC. The bad thind is that got elected doing it. This is his M.O. That 9/11 image was that all image. Like he spent more time at ground zero than the workers. Ha!!

Rev Al   August 23rd, 2007 7:25 pm ET

The claim of racism came from the NAACP. Nuff said. Why is it that only blacks cry racism? A black get pulled over for doing 60 in a 35 mile zone, got to be racism and profiling.

Marsha   August 23rd, 2007 6:55 pm ET

This media group are a bunch of scumbags. Slimey, racist, and manipulative. I can think of other words to describe their politics but I won't say them here. They will play to every American's morally repressed prejudices. That is not controversial, that is backwards and hateful.

Anonymous   August 23rd, 2007 6:49 pm ET

Can we not wait until they actually make an ad for him before we bash his choices? So what if they did that in the long run the candidates make the campaigns what they want and he can control what they put out there for him. Geesh give it some time.

Jon, Sacramento ~ Ca   August 23rd, 2007 6:41 pm ET

What? The NAACP didn't like the ad?

I guess the NAACP only approves ads which features James Byrd’s daughter claiming of Bush’s opposition to a hate crimes bill: "It was like my father was killed all over again."

Let's just be honest - ALL political parties get into the mud-slinging business.

S Bengtson, Phoenix AZ   August 23rd, 2007 6:25 pm ET

The best commercial of all time couldn’t help Giuliani beat a black guy a mexican and a chick finally we wont get another stuffy old white guy, boy that’s gotta sit well with the republicans :)

David, Salinas, CA   August 23rd, 2007 6:20 pm ET

I’m surprised. I would have thought a group of Washington insiders this sleazy would be working for Fred Thompson.

FYI, these guys are Karl Rove proteges who supported George “Macaca” Allen, play the race card every chance they get, and compare their opponents to Osama bin Laden.

If you think it’s a laugh, just remember the Harold Ford Playboy ad worked.

Things are going to get ugly.
