Gonzales has resigned as attorney general.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Embattled U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned, senior administration officials told CNN Monday.

Many lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have long called for his ouster after the firing of several U.S. attorneys in 2006. President Bush had long stood by Gonzales.

One of Gonzales' chief critics, Sen. Charles E. Schumer released a statement Monday praising Gonzales for resigning.

J. Gutierrez Hesperia, Ca,

"I am amazed at how anti-Hispanic the Democ-rat party has represented itself in it's attack on Alberto Gonzales."

WAAAAAA! It's ALL just because he's Hispanic, and has NOTHING to do with how grossly incompetent he was right?

Ben, Chiba, Japan   August 27th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

Sorry, Mr. Gutierrez, but it has nothing to do with being anti-Hispanic, and everything to do with Mr. Gonzales' politization of the Justice Department and lying to Congress. Go back and look at the videos–a liar is a liar, no matter what color he is.

J. Gutierrez - add to your list of names Arlen Spector, Susan Collins,
George Voinovich,
Saxby Chamblis, Tom Coborn, Lamar Alexander and Norm Coleman. All White Supreme, anti brown and Republican. So much for your attempt to spin this as a racist Democrat issue. But keep trying.

Padraig Pearse   August 27th, 2007 3:59 pm ET

By providing pseudo-legal fig leaves to try to justify the myriad crimes of the Cheney administration, Gonzales has abused his office by doing such violence to the Constitution and the rule of law that it's indicative of just how co-opted and corrupted our democracy has become that he gets to walk away with his pension, free health care for life, and his freedom instead of the long drop and a short rope that he so richly deserves.

J. Gutierrez Hesperia, Ca   August 27th, 2007 2:14 pm ET

I am amazed at how anti-Hispanic the Democ-rat party has represented itself in it's attack on Alberto Gonzales. Clinton, Edwards and the rest of the mob have clearly shown their true colors - White Supreme and Anti-Brown.

Why did CNN only post the Democrats reaction (via seperate blogs no less)?

Oh yeah I forgot, this is kind of like MSDNC.

Response to Allan in PA:

How do you know what Mike in NY wants? It's not clear from his post.

Steve, Houston, TX   August 27th, 2007 12:52 pm ET

The fact that this joker has been able to hold onto this job for so long is easily the 8th wonder of the world. He has presided over the worst administration of the DOJ this nation has ever known, he's a disgrace to the principles of justice and fairness. The only thing he had going for him is that he once managed to get the future president of the United States off of jury duty and drug related offences, thus sealing a friendship that would in the future come close ruining a prestigious institution of justice.

Good riddance to Gonzalez!!

Toni C., Romeoville, IL   August 27th, 2007 12:49 pm ET

As a hispanic, I am embarrased. Yes, Gonzales had a chance to live the dream. Gonzales' dream was to embarras all hispanics. He was a "puppet" under Rove/Bush.

allan g. phila. pa,

No. We want someone who can fight a war and WIN. Which you guys can't seem to do after 5 years, thousands of troop lives, and hundreds of billions of dollars spent vs third-world countries with 1/1000 the military we have.

Any OTHER questions I can answer for ya? Lemme know, I'll be happy to oblige!

Evan Esteves, Boca Raton, FL   August 27th, 2007 10:55 am ET

Scott

Chuck Schumer is more of a moderate than anything else buddy. Again republicans use yet another article to bash democrats…It's quite sad to see you guys in such a desperate state.

Kyle, Indianapolis, IM   August 27th, 2007 10:41 am ET

bye bye gonzo! It is about time!

allan g. phila. pa   August 27th, 2007 10:19 am ET

response to mike in NY,

but cut-and-run is good, right? Cut n'run is what you and your ilk want, right?

Brittany in Atl, GA   August 27th, 2007 9:59 am ET

Is it just me or does something smell EXTRA rank in DC involving this whole situation?

VanReuter NY NY   August 27th, 2007 9:52 am ET

This bum was as far from honesty and competence as you could get. Only a Bush Kool-Aide GUZZLER could think that this isn't a great day for democracy, and the rule of law.

Mike, NY   August 27th, 2007 9:04 am ET

Isn't this technically cut-and-run? Especially after he vowed to stay to 'fix the department.'

S. B. Stein   August 27th, 2007 8:56 am ET

Well, he should have stepped down a while ago. This does not resolve the firing of U.S. Attorney or any of the wire tapping questions. I am sure that this person will claim executive privilage and not testify before Congress (not that he did that well before hand). I would hope that Gonzales understand what is going on and tells everything that is going on once he has left to make amends with all of the problems that have come up. I am glad I am not going to be his successor. There are too many problems that are so large that I'd be having stress headaches from day one.

Scott, Boulder, CO   August 27th, 2007 8:55 am ET

When Chuck Schumer congratulates you on resigning you know you're about as far from being a liberal as one can get.

nietzscheapprentice Portland, OR   August 27th, 2007 8:52 am ET

Pease to all men, pray for his family.
