God, no... please tell us it's not true that Bush would consider trying to shove the Katrina bomb down our throats as the next AG!!!!!!

Chertoff wasn't right for Homeland Security. He wasn't right for much else. He certainly is NOT right for Attorney General. Send him home and he can take Bush with him.

Chertoff will be just as bad as Gonzales. Chertof wants a Virtual Fence that is just Code for a never ending money pit and a project that will never end. Wasn't Chertoff one of the Juliani recommendations after BigJ's first one was exposed as having mafia Ties. How can these people go into work every day do absolutely nothing to help and often cause more harm then go home and kiss their families and look in the mirror. I think its because people in South Africa and the Iraq don't have maps AND SUCH. GEES

Chertoff would be the most likely candidate, however, things can change. Recall the amnesty bill for illegal immigrants that failed? Chertoff was as disappointed as was the rest of the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton monarchy. Additionally, if individuals like Sen. Arlen Spector (R) are already cheering for Chertoff as the most viable candidate it means the American citizens are being screwed. Recall, Arlen Spector was the defense attorney who helped Ira Einhorn (Unicorn Killer and founder of Earth Day) eludes justice for many years after his conviction. Democrats and Republicans are both applauding Chertoff, this again means we as citizens, left and right, are being screwed. Don’t let the forth coming stupid confirmation hearings fool you into believing these political sociopaths are doing the peoples work. It is all show time and public relations for their up coming elections. Most of these clowns in Washington D.C. have no idea what it is like to have to fend off the illegal immigrants on your way to and from work; how as a small construction business owner you get underbid, because you pay your employees a quality wage; how you as an American citizen are placed in the back of the line in the hospital waiting room for hours; how you as an American citizen are paying higher tuition and tax to accommodate the entitlement of those who call you a bigot if you disagree to allowing criminals to roam free. Most elected officials are well insulated from the issue of the day to day citizen. They care mostly about occupying their posh jobs in Washington D.C. When their jobs are threatened that’s when they get serious; it happens once or twice about every thee years. Other than that it is an embarrassing donkey and elephant show. It must provide the enemies of our nation, who take note of everything they do, plenty of confidence to destroying us.

I assure you the removal of Gonzales was not for the good of the country, or political pressure, these people in Washington D.C. do not really care about political pressure. If they did the Iraq War would have never taken place and Saddam Hussein would still have things under control, which includes Iran. Rather, these individuals are seething from the failure of the criminal immigration amnesty bill. It is my belief those who wanted the passage of this pathetic bill, will be the same ones questioning Mr. Chertoff during the confirmation hearings. Take note of all the trade and security deals being done without congressional approval or the input of the American citizen. The bottom line, Chertoff is a corporate and political puppet. It is why he would be the candidate for the Attorney General. Much like the Drug War, Iraq War, billions, and billions of record profits are being made by big business. Both Democrats and Republicans gain profit from the War, illegal immigration and most favored trade status with our enemies like China. In my view, who ever becomes the new U.S. Attorney General, won’t be there to pursue justice, but to manipulate justice and realign the administrations agenda for profit. Do not be quick to assume they are not going to do something troubling, treasonous, and constitutionally subversive.
Katrina is water under the bridge, most people do not care about it since the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana have been given three-hundred billion of our tax dollars, including hundreds of millions in donations and have gotten almost nowhere. Remember never to build under the waterline or in flood prone area. Read Animal Farm. It is time for some fresh faces in Washington D.C. I am sick and tired of looking at Bush, Clinton, Kennedy, Mc Cain, Schumer, Reed, Pelosi, Lott, Specter. And while were at it I am sick of predictable political puppets hacks like Sean Hannity, Alan Combs, Jerry Rivers and Robert Zimmerman. Done with my rant! Vote Independent...

Certainly it was long past time for Alberto Gonzalez to resign. Whether you buy his version of the U.S. Attorney firings and the warrantless wiretaps or not, his testimony before Congress was indicative of either duplicity or severe brain damage, either of which should disqualify a member of the Justice Department.

I think Michael Chertoff is basically an honest guy and totally qualified, but his nomination to replace Gonzalez as AG is highly problematic for several reasons:

1) This administration needs new blood. To keep rotating the same few cronies looks incestuous and limited. Gonzalez kept his job as long as he did because he was part of the so-called Texas Posse, President Bush’s small circle of friends from down home. The President needs to cast a wider net and show that he wants a quality cabinet, not just a familiar one.

2) Politics vs Policy. There has never been a White House (not even Nixon’s) with less understanding of the importance of separating political victory from policy decisions. Whether it’s Karl Rove making legislative calls or the Gonzalez firing Democratic U.S. Attorneys, the Bush administration has blurred a line that should be clear. Chertoff was part of the failed Whitewater investigation, worked with Rudy Giuliani, and was a major fund-raiser for President Bush and the Republican party. The Justice Department isn’t supposed to be a political arm of the White House. There are many highly qualified Attorneys without the political baggage that Chertoff carries.

3) Two confirmation hearings are worse than one. If President Bush nominates Chertoff, he’ll have to replace him, too By choosing someone from outside the current circle, the President can save his administration at least one hearing full of dirty laundry.

4) Katrina, Katrina, Katrina. Chertoff was the guy in charge of the pathetic disaster response, and he tried to pass the buck when faced with the aftermath. Despite an existing FEMA report which identified the exact scenario as one of the three most likely disasters to strike the U.S., Chertoff said, “That 'perfect storm' of a combination of catastrophes exceeded the foresight of the planners, and maybe anybody's foresight." Whether you buy that or not, coverage of a Chertoff confirmation hearing is going to feature lots of footage of those poor New Orleans folks stranded on rooftops and the President saying “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job.” I doubt if that’s what the Republicans want on tv screens in an election year.
Strategically, I think the President should leave Chertoff where he is, and replace Gonzalez with a moderate highly-respected Republican ex-member of Congress. That way he can stumble through his final lame-duck year in peace. But then, the only thing I’m absolutely sure of is that the President doesn’t care what I think.

Skeletor Chertoff as AG?! I guess it really doesn't matter. Chief Law Enforcement Officer of an administration which despises the Constitution, the Supreme Law of the Land. The position is a joke as is the "man" himself.

And I don't particularly care for having a dual-citizen of ANY nation represent any high office in our government, I think I'd feel safer with him being Head Torture-Enabler / Constitution Trasher than head of the department charged with protecting the nation from foreign terrorists.

What a swell Bush idea..substitute one PC Weenie with another one..a la Certoff. That Guy who "works for Israel" according to some Poster here..LOL. That's why Certoff ticked off so many people with his incidents of PC Muslim pandering, including forced Muslim Education classes for all TSA and Fed gov workers, plus kow-towing to CAIR by giving them an unnecrssary guided tour of behind-the-scenes airline security procedures. Don't we feel safer, now.

Oh, No! That's all we need is Michael Chertoff as Attorney General! What will the Bush do next? Appoint Mike (Brownie you're goin'a heck of a job")Brown as Sec. of Homeland Security?

The citizens of the great country had better begin raising holy hell with their elected officials in order to get our country back from the most corrupt administration this country has ever seen. Bush and his side kicks have completely ignored the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

It really doesn't matter who Bush picks, because it is all temporary and meaningless. This awful, destructive, vile Republican rule will come to an end with the election in November 2008, and the country can then finally start rebuilding itself and regaining confidence.

Don't worry people. Chertoff is an loudmouth moron that lets his "gut" tell us when to worry about terrorism. Just like Bush and his shady buddies did with appointing the seemingly calm Robert Gates, they'll get someone that will be more softspoken and looks like an honest guy. Chertoff is a scary guy that is not to be trusted. Even someone like Bush wouldn't appoint him to the top cop. Keep hope alive.

Alonzo the Bush Administration already has more credibility then any Democratic administration purely based on his appointment of minorities as well as females to positions of power.

Since when is race or sex an indicator of ability or right to be nominated to any position of power? People should be nominated based on their abilities not the color of their skin.

That being said, nominating Chertoff to replace Gonzales would be a huge mistake. Chertoff should be considering resigning due to his own incompetence at running the Dept of Homeland Security. Unfortunately the only way that will probably happen is if we are attacked by terrorist and his incompetence is highlighted like it should be.

If the Bush administration is smart (don't laugh) it will pick a quiet establishment type. The new AG will be a caretaker. His term will last less than 18 months before a new administration takes office in January of 09. Thus the position is best for someone who will quietly run things without having an agenda of his own.

After wasting much time spitting on interrogations, asking Gonzalez the simplest of questions as he constantly evaded in view of the entire globe, it stands for reason there is a propaganda team constantly dogging good Americans to tell them they can't assume anything about Gonzalez that relates to corruption or treason.

We watch the judge shows on TV all the time and know what would happen if the judge asks direct questions and doesn't get direct replies. Now in a new age where the Bush administration claims it can assume anything about any American of the multiplied millions of them, and make them become detainees on a whim as written on paper, a propaganda team tells us we can't assume anything about one man or one team who now rules this country under controversy.

If any of us can become a detainee on Bush's whim, if we evade questions during interrogations like Gonzalez did, would we be released and assumed to have good names with no thought of wrongdoing? Can we then be released and assume the benefits Gonzalez received as he spat upon the interrogation process before the entire world, having no kind of shame?

This is what follows after even telling us about a method for extracting information that can save lives called TORTURE, and forgetting to use that technique upon the declared number one man in terror: Saddam Hussein.

Before he died, he was given privileges denied all Americans on paper under the Patriot Act. Bush did not even use this method of information extraction to force Saddam to reveal where he stashed his proverbial WMDs. Saddam was given privileges high above all Americans and received public and open due process!

Do you think he could rub his magic lamp and make all of George Bush's crimes disappear?

Not likely Jafar, but keep on conjuring the hurricane dude. There's still plenty of time for both your genie like butt and Bush to reap the whirlwind baby... Katrina style.

Michael Chertoff??? Even if one were to set aside the fiasco of “Katrina”, (and no one should) The Dept. of Homeland Security is surrealistically dysfunctional and an unmitigated disaster. Our borders are infinitely less secure since the inception of “Homeland Security”.
Whatever the faults and shortcomings of the agencies that were mashed into this ill-conceived and horribly run Department (and there were many) pale in comparison to what we have with it.
At the borders, all officer expertise has been diluted to nothing, on site authority for enforcement has been crushed and no dissent, criticism, or input is permitted to flow upstream. Morale and job satisfaction are subterranean. CBP inspectors leave faster than they can be trained (at huge tax payer expense) and those that stay, are just trying to duck under the radar long enough to get out on their retirement.
The reality is that Homeland Security Theater would make a Salvador Dali nightmare appear blissfully pastoral.

It's about time Gonzales is gone. Chertoff will not be an able replacement.
Washington D.C. should be renamed, Denial D.C.

Another game of musical chairs for Bush cronies. Chertoff is a disgrace to this country for rampant mismanagement.

Congress shouldn't interview any of Bush's nominees until Bush complies with the law and responds to the subpoenas and cooperates with investigations into his criminal operation.

This is a long overdue resignation. In spite of his denials, the record shows that he was a right-wing idealogue whose loyalty was to Bush and not the nation.

Alonzo Tongincheek Alburque NM,
I'm all in favor of another Hispanic American being nominated, so long as he or she isn't as corrupt as the last Hispanic American to hold the office.

Stop taking his resignation as an attack on your ethnic background and for what it is, the removal of a high ranking official who damaged his country. It's too bad that the first Hispanic American to "make it to the top" wasn't a good example of what legal Hispanic Americans can offer this country.

I don't know a lot about Gonzales, but I do know that if the Left Wing in Congress hates him so much, he must have been doing something right. I would guess that he is probably a quality man of good character.

Isn't it sad that we can judge a man as likely to be good based on the people opposed to him?

David Chattanooga, Tn

You are a raging lunatic. There are a Million other reasons to oppose the guy w/o sinking to the depths of Anti-Semitic rants.

Alonzo Tongincheek Alburque

Don't be ridiculous, if anything you should be ashamed of Gonzales. He all he did was become a lying crony from the moment of his appointment. You should be upset b/c Bush used him and made him look like a complete idiot.

and Bush appointing another Hispanic will not win him back ANY credibility. That moment is long gone.

Certainly there are better choices than Chertoff who had hardly distingquished himself in his current position.

How about a career lawyer at Justice?

I am a Katrina refuge. This man gets a zero - a zero a zero. He never recognnized his defective leadership - he never apologized for the horrendous inaction of his department. He is a fish out of water in big government. He amy have had great credentials to clerk for brilliant men but he has demonstrated a learning curve that seems to be flat. The Justice Department needs more in the line of a "Gates" mentality and sensitivity and political saavy - someone who says mistakes have been made and I am here to mend the wounds - you'll never hear that from this man. He doesn't see the problem to apoligize for it or worse believes he is above the fray. Either way he is a disaster where he is and would be too brutal for words through the confirmation process, forbid that he would ever get confirmed.

David,

Are you completely insane? Although I agree that Chertoff is another bad choice, your rampant speculation and anti-semitism has nothing to do with this. Try to take your foot out of your mouth before speaking.

And by the way, keep your prejudice to yourself and I won't have to comment on the South.

CHERTOFF?!? Is the bar for office set SO LOW in this country? I suggest Michael Vick. I'm sure he knows how to take a bite out of crime. When bush and the rest of his administration is sent to jail, Vick could even be available for meetings, like when they get together and pretend they are still infallibly in power.
Ah, I can dream...
