Elizabeth Edwards continues to play a prominent role in her husband's campaign.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) – The Democratic Party has ignored Southern voters in the past and it's unlikely two of the major Democratic presidential candidates — Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama — will spend much time in the South, said Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Democratic candidate John Edwards.

She told a group of her husband's supporters at a fundraiser Tuesday: "You see Democrats all the time write off states like Tennessee, North Carolina, too."

"We didn't campaign with a single ad in North Carolina last time and we had a North Carolinian on the ballot. Why? Because they didn't think a Democrat could win North Carolina," Edwards said. Bush won the state.

Edwards answered questions of supporters who each paid at least $15 to see her at a Nashville restaurant.

Edwards said Democratic values parallel more closely with Southern values than those of the Republican Party, because of emphasis on family and small community issues, such as child care credits and universal health insurance.

But the Democratic Party isn't bothering to spend the money needed to connect to Southern voters, Edwards said, which she said showed it had written off the region.

Edwards said a Democrat is electable in the region where there are five states with Democratic governors — Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Clinton was in Arkansas a week ago and pledged to carry the state where her husband was governor.

"I'm going to do everything I can to make sure we put Arkansas back in the winner's column," she said.

Calls to the Obama campaign were not immediately returned.

The democrats values most closely resemble southern values Mrs. Edwards?
High democrat-tax policies increase the need for family child care and, correspondingly, child care credits, democrat "hate speech" laws aim to try and prohibit speech that preserves "traditional" family (southern) values - even in churches, socialized medicine is a "small community" issue only in that people in small communities will see even more taxation, and the democrats' "moral" platform is out of line with that of most southerners - especially the African American community. No wonder democrats don't bother with southern states.

We see how Edwards helped with the South in 2004. The same thing goes for his homestate of South Carolina in this primary. There is no crossover appeal with Edwards. Edwards is old news, and his wife needs to stop fighting his battles.
Obama has already talked about campaigning in Southern states, the number of possible swing states increases when he is the nominee because of an increased black voter turnout.

Hillary already campaigned in Arkansas, S.C. etc. She is WRONG.

As a southern "moderate"-ish Republican, I will say that Edwards could garner a lot of support by spending time in the southern states. He would be better received than his extremist party-mates. For the sake of productive politics, I would rather see Edwards on the Democratic ticket. I think that this man has the best chance of generating intelligent political discussion and garnering the attention of latent voters which, (however they decide to vote) is healthy for the American system of Democracy.

John is doing a good job in his territory,I wouldn't spoil that progress by sending any distracting influences to that part of the country.

I barely finished reading the headline when I sighed…all I had to read was the first two words, "Elizabeth Edwards."

Mrs. Edwards often has good things to say, but she makes headlines too often.

It's ironic, though, to see Hillary Clinton supporters attack Mrs. Edwards. After all, is was Hillary Clinton who mocked a popular country singer and insulted housewives everywhere in 1992.

I think the always-smiling drum-playing Tipper Gore struck the perfect tone for a candidate's wife.
