Hunter disagrees with President Bush on immigration

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — California congressman Duncan Hunter won Texas' first Republican Party Straw Poll on Saturday in a low-turnout event that lacked the top-tier presidential candidates.

Hunter got 534 votes, or 41 percent of the vote. Former Tennessee senator and actor Fred Thompson, who is expected to announce his candidacy next week but was not at the event, came in second with 266 votes, or nearly 21 percent. Texas congressman Ron Paul came in third with 217 votes, or 17 percent.

Crowd support seemed split between Hunter and Paul, whose supporters waved signs and chanted his name throughout the day. Other candidates attending were Chicago businessman John Cox, who got 10 votes; counterterrorism expert Hugh Cort of Birmingham, Ala., who got three votes; and tool-and-die maker Ray McKinney of Savannah, Ga., with 28 votes.

Each of the other absent but better-known candidates received less than 7 percent of the vote. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee came in fourth with 83 votes; former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani got 78 votes; former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney received 61 votes; and Arizona Sen. John McCain garnered eight votes.

Others who didn't attend, Kansas senator Sam Brownback and Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, each received six votes.

The Texas primary is March 4.

Why is it that the media does not give other candidates any time what so ever? Ray Mckinney had an outstanding speech and the Republican Party loved it, by showing their appreciation with two standing ovations. Why does the media not share someone like him to everyone and give us a breath of fresh air, letting us know that politics is for everyone? The people made this great country and now the media appears to want to control it. So put him on one of your talk shows and see how the people of America respond. At the least you have nothing to loose, and if they like him you have everything because your station introduced him first. Thanks Marianne

Who's this Paul Ron guy?

I really trust Duncan Hunter, so far he is our pick, And we use to be democrats, but since they seem more concerned with La Raza, Mexico etc with Bush and Kennedy we are looking elsewhere. Hillary wants to turn us into communist Cuba, Obama wants to turn us in to Islam, Richardson like Bush wants us to be over run by Mexico and turn into a Third world country.
But the election is a long way away. Two we refuse to vote for, Clinton/ Mccain ,

Raymond McKinney, Savannah, Georgia   September 3rd, 2007 12:55 am ET

What I find really humorous is Ray McKinney http://www.Ray2008.com spent less than a grand to come out and beat 3 of the so called top candidates, a lawyer (Cox) and a Doctor (Cort). He was also the only speaker to get TWO standing ovations during his speach. ALthough he only got 28 votes, the day before the voting NO ONE had even heard of him. Seems the media plans to keep it that way.

This is how the right continues to eat their young.

Ron Paul is systematiclly being relegated to the trash heap of GOP politics.

Correction. I believe that I heard (this morning) to be $2 billion per week.

There's no reason to post any negative response to my quote of $2 billion per day. It was a simple mistake - I'm correcting it here.

It is great in the day of politics when all the candidates fight one. Huckabee, Brownback, Giuliani, and Romney had all their supporters vote for Duncan Hunter, to downplay Ron Paul and Fred Thompson, their two major comnpetitors. How dignified.

Boy, this ought to launch his candidacy right into the lime light.

I must say, that even thought I'm registered as a dem, I like his platform on China and the 12 million criminal intruders. But he has been a Bushite suck up for years, voting the Chaney line. I could not twist my own arm hard enough to vote for him. Unless he came out and repudiated this evil administration that is. Shame is that I cannot vote for any of the Dems based on this lack of policy on China or Immigration. Oh well, not like our votes in Florida get counted anyway.

Isn't this the idiot who co-authored the torture bill with that lovely retro-active legislation?

Ron Paul, Area 51   September 1st, 2007 7:40 pm ET

What is wrong with Duncan Hunter’s aspect ratio?

Why is the media not giving more coverage to tool-and-die maker Ray McKinney of Savannah, Ga?
