Bill Clinton looked on as Oprah Winfrey prepared to give a speech in 2006. The former President appeared on Winfrey's talk show Tuesday.

(CNN) – Former president Bill Clinton appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show Tuesday to promote his new book, “Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World.”

When Winfrey introduced Clinton, she admitted she didn’t quite know how to address the former president.

“When you call, I don’t know what to say. Your Highness, sir, thank you, Mr. Former President. Mr. President. Mr. Clinton,” she said. “Could you tell I was all verklempt about it?”

Winfrey then asked Clinton what he wants to be called if his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, becomes president.

Clinton replied, “My Scottish friends say I should be called ‘First Laddie’ because it’s the closest thing to ‘First Lady.’”

The former president also told Winfrey that he does play a role in his wife’s presidential campaign, but “not in an organized way.”

“If she’s writing an important article or giving an important speech, she’ll ask me to read it. Particularly if it’s something I know a lot about,” he added.

Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Obama? I am so disappointed with black supporting black rather than black supporting the "most qualified candidate for the position." Standard Human Resource policy… you select THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE FOR THE POSITION.

Where have we gone wrong? Where has she gone wrong?

I severely dislike Clinton. He is a proven lier and slimeball and his wife must be too if she has stuck with him this long.

Obviously those folks that are against Hillary and Obama think we should be able to re-elect the 600 billion (to date) president. Three billion a week spent by GWB, while we hear all of the 'Pubs' worrying about Dem's spending. You folks need to wake up and realize how much your vote cost this country over the last 6 1/2 years.

Rick ~ Chicago

I LOVE the fact you're reading comprehension skills are as sharpe as a marble.

Try re-reading my post where I identify the candidate's "spouse" and share the list of Bill Clinton accomplishments.

But you're right - had President Bush sexually assaulted a few women, gotten regular "servicing" in the Oval office you libs would have thought so highly of him, eh?

Keep posting Rick. I LOVE correcting you and will gladly repeat as needed.

Rick, Chicago Illinois   September 6th, 2007 10:28 am ET

James, Phoenix AZ,

I LOVE the prospect of you still NOT getting the fact that Bill ISN'T running for prez and Hillary IS!

I love the prospect that you still don't get that Bill Clinton, despite all that you listed about him personally, was a better president then Dubya. And that an IMPEACHED president had higher approval numbers, and was respected more, than the current one!

Joe, Terry ND   September 6th, 2007 12:28 am ET

"Imagine what Bill Clinton can do as the First Husband"

Bill Clinton was PRESIDENT for 8 YEARS and he accomplished NOTHING (other than allowing Saddam and Osama to become more powerful). What makes you think he will do anything as "First Husband"?

Jon, Sacramento ~ Ca   September 5th, 2007 5:00 pm ET

Tony in Alabama writes,

"There are at least a million Iraqi's and others that will never get over President Bush. That is because they are dead or physically and/or mentally incapacitated by this hideously stupid war. He qualifies as a war criminal by any measure, and should be transported to The Hague for trial as soon as he leaves office."

You cite "at least a million" Iraqi's are dead, physically or mentally incapcitated… Can you cite your source for this factoid?

(unlikely considering most sources suggest 75,000 - 100,000 civilians incapacitated. Tim Robbins - looney left - only exagerates the number to 400,000. So you're 1 Million is quite amazingly "stupid" - to use your word).

Bush is a War Criminal. PLEASE cite for us the International Law Bush (and Congress that voted to authorize Bush's use of force) violated. Certainly you have all these facts laid out… we'd love to hear your legal arguement. Now granted, you'll also have to indict the leaders of the other coalition countries that supported this effort by sending their troops: Australia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Ukraine, and the UK.

I look forward to your reply.

Jon, Little Rock, AR   September 5th, 2007 12:30 pm ET

what do you call him?
CFR cronie, neo-con globalist, liar and traitor.
you're welcome.

Bill W, Coatesville, PA   September 5th, 2007 12:12 pm ET

Once again, Bill Clinton is NOT running for office. A vote for Hillary Clinton is NOT a vote for Bill Clinton. Why do so many people want to vote for Hillary, thinking they are really putting Bill Clinton back in the White House? No, you're not. Bill is not the candidate. Hillary is.

Take a look at her record. Housewife for 8 years, she just happend to be married to Bill Clinton, who was president of the US at the time. Elected senator afterwards, on the strength of her husband's name. Did nothing good at all as senator - voted for the war in Iraq, voted for an immigration bill the entire nation was opposed to, and brougt the number one outsourcer of US jobs to India into New York. Now she wants to be president, again on the strength of her husband's name.

She has NO experience. Please - separate Hillary Clinton in your mind from Bill Clinton. A vote for Hillary is NOT a vote for Bill. Bill cannot legally office again.

Tim, NY   September 5th, 2007 8:15 am ET

Who is this ron paul u talking about? never heard of him….

Joe, Florida   September 5th, 2007 7:46 am ET

The sad thing for those who don't like Bill is that the only thing they can say against him is his adultery.

These people fail to realize that the American people have already gotten over that. The fact of the matter is that he was a very good president. I could not care less if he cheated on Hillary with more than one woman. I care about the economy, the global climate, our borders, our defense, the views the world people have on us. And, whether those Bill-haters like or not, the American people care about these more than a husband who cheated.

Like Tony from Enterprise Alabama said: "Give me an adulterer over a murderous war criminal any day!" What has Bush done that it's good for this country? If there's any anything, the bad overweights it.

Joe, Florida   September 5th, 2007 7:39 am ET

I keep this seeing these Ron Paul posts spring out of nowhere into these threads.

Please, Ron should Run out of this election. He is losing in the polls. The other Republicans will beat him in a heartbeat. Sorry, but that's the truth.

Chip Celina OH   September 5th, 2007 7:37 am ET

To Diana, Los Angeles,

Excellent post! I realy think Gov. Richardson is worth a long look. He possesses quite a resume and on the surface seems quite genuine. I also like Sen. Obama for his candid responses and genuine interaction with people at campaign events.

I hope the American voters do their homework instead of just casting a vote for Hillary because she's a woman, and a Clinton. She keeps telling us she'll fight when elected. Personally, I've seen enough fighting the last 15 years in Washington. We've seen where that has gotten us.

Have a good day,

Chip

Nick, Birmingham Alabama   September 5th, 2007 4:55 am ET

The idiots who comments on here about how great Clinton and Obama are scares the you know what out of me. Neither of them will help this country. I wish people would look at Ron Paul's record. He is the only candidate willing to move us in the RIGHT direction.

Tony, Enterprise, Alabama   September 5th, 2007 3:02 am ET

I am not surprised by the sophomoric references to President Clinton's past indiscretions; though I would have thought by now most of these folks would have gotten over it.

There are at least a million Iraqi's and others that will never get over President Bush. That is because they are dead or physically and/or mentally incapacitated by this hideously stupid war. He qualifies as a war criminal by any measure, and should be transported to The Hague for trial as soon as he leaves office.

Give me an adulterer over a murderous war criminal any day!

Cas Santos, San Mateo CA.   September 5th, 2007 2:15 am ET

How painful must it be for the vast republican right hate filled bigots, to see that despite there best efforts America Loves and respects Bill Clinton and recognizes his extraordinary achievements as President regardless of his shortcomings as a husband, father and leader. We have moved on and forgiven you republicans should do the same….

James, Olaya Street, Riyadh   September 5th, 2007 12:36 am ET

Bill Clinton, a serial adulterer, does not have the moral compass to be a figurehead for the American people. Never had and never will. As for Hillary, to paraphrase Fred Thompson,"what did the President's wife know and when did she know it." Hillary knew from past experience he was lying to the American people, but she kept her mouth shut. America does not need a morally ambivalent President.

Ron, Bullhead Arizona   September 5th, 2007 12:10 am ET

The President of the United States is more of an Instution then a position, anytime a man becomes President he is always president and always addressed as Mr. president. I would think that anybody with half an education would know that. Of course if you are trying to belittle a president you might fein ignorance, Opera doesnt cut it. She knows better!!

Pam A Summerside PEI   September 4th, 2007 11:55 pm ET

1. Hillary-President
2. Obama-Vice President
3. Chuck Schumer–Supreme Court justice
4. Bill Clinton–UN Secratary GEneral or US Ambassador to the UN
5. Edwards Secretary of State

And that's the name of that game

Diana Faust, Los Angeles, CA   September 4th, 2007 10:17 pm ET

I doubt very much that Hillary would be leading the pack running for president, if she wasn't married to Bill Clinton. Name recognition is everything in this media-driven race to the Oval Office. She is a household name; people who put little effort into their political decisions will often vote for the most familiar name on a ticket.

However, voters who want the Democratic President with the most experience AND the most forward-thinking platform would do well to look at another Bill who should be in the White House: Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico.

In a time we are seeking peace, he is the only candidate to have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, 4 times. He's the only top-four candidate calling for ALL our troops to be removed from Iraq (no residual forces left indefinitely). He would replace them with a muslim-only UN peacekeepers. (His time as the US Ambassador to the UN gives him the background on how to get this done.)

In a time we are seeking energy independence and an end to global warming, the Sierra Club says Richardson's energy plan is "the most aggressive and detailed" (His years in Clinton's cabinet as Energy Secretary give him the knowledge on what can really be done.)

Besides his 14 yrs in Congress (more than any other frontrunner), Richardson is the only one with executive political office experience, now serving his second term as Governor of New Mexico. As Gov, he's balanced 5 budgets, experience no other candidate has.

Ms. Clinton tries to play the "experience" card, but it is really her husband who has the experience. Bill Richardson has actually DONE it himself. He's worth checking out and voting for in the primary.

It is a sad state of affairs (pun intended), but Bill Clinton wouldn't be the "First Adulterer." There were many before him and there will be many after him. God, Hillary, and Chelsea all forgave Bill. He made a stupid mistake, but praise God for all the good that he did for our country and for the work that he continues to do around the world. Bill Clinton may be categorized as the first of many things, but adulterer is not one of them.

It is so amusing the Much Ado About Bill Clinton's Adultery!

Adultery by Presidents has been a hushed subject since the before the Eisenhower Days!

The only difference between him and the many other Audulterous Presidents is that his went public. People act as if Bill was a first! Too Comical.
He certainly wasn't the first and he definitely won't be the last.

I'd much prefer to have a President with an imperfect moral record than one who is obsessed with war and power.

If that's the only criticism you can find to smear Hillary and Bill you best get prepared to handle your disappointment ater the 08 election!

Well, maybe one of these days Oprah and others will wake up to the fact that the most refreshing and experienced candidate in the race - from EITHER major party - is NM Governor Bill Richardson: 14 years in Congress, UN Ambassador, only candidate with Executive experience (as Governor) or Cabinet experience (as Sect. of Energy), re-elected with 69% of the vote in a closely divided state and four time nominee for Nobel Peace Prize. If other governments trust and respect the man for his leadership, then maybe America needs to wake up before it's too late. richardsonforpresident.com is my link of choice.

Peggy, Chicago, IL   September 4th, 2007 7:51 pm ET

I can't wait for Hillary to be elected President. Mark my words, she will. She has the experience and the intelligence that we need to bring this country back into a persona that people around the world revere.

Let's face it, we were the best in everything the world has to offer. But the United States has fallen in the eyes of the rest of the world. We look like we are arrogant bullies. I don't know when we became the "world police", but it's unbecoming.

Bill Clinton was simply the best president the United States has ever had. Hillary was not a stay at home housewife. She got right into the thick of things when her husband was president. She has the experience that we need.

I'm from Illinois. I love Obama too. But, I think his time will be after Hillary. He would best serve as her vice president and get his experience. I would gladly vote for Obama after Hillary.

And all of you detractors about Bill Clinton being the First Adulterer. Have you noticed that the politicians who complain the most about gay relationships, are usually Republicans, and the more they complain, they have been turning out to be gay themselves. The ones who complain the most about adulterous relationships, turn out to really be having an adulterous relationship? Get over it!

Hillary '08!

Some people just can't stand with clintons regardless what they do. I think both Hillary and Bill are good hearted intellectual people. In compared to Obma or Edward they are way pure. Obma make non profit hopital raise his wife's salary right after he became senator and Edward made tons of money by sucking poor people.

All of the rediculous responses shown here remind me of a bumper sticker I saw recently: No one died when Clinton lied.

It doesn't take a genius to see that all of the indiscretion, lying and deceitfulness that has come out of the Republican Party most recently, trumps Clinton's indiscretion.

I wish you idiots that still think that the Monica thing was a big deal would get a life! If Hillary had the grace and love to forgive him it was her decision and hers alone everyone else should just forget it!

IM4ULORD and a few others, if the Lord held your sins over your own heads the way you hold Bill Clinton's over his, then you'd be headed straight for hell.

Get over it. Bill diddled a consenting adult who was not his wife. His wife has forgiven him, and he asked God to forgive him, so the Lord's done that as well.

What makes you think you're better than God, to keep bringing up the past over and over and over again, ad nauseum?

Try finding something original to say, something that's honest, appropriate to the present, edifying, and rational.

J Houston, TX   September 4th, 2007 5:53 pm ET

The Clintons and Obama in the White House. Now tell me, how better than that can it get? Democrat or Republican you have to admit this would be the most incredible combination ever.

What? NO! As an objective non-party affiliated individual, no thank you to the Clintons. We need less political games in Washington. Obama would win the presidential election HANDS DOWN but Democrats are going to throw it away because the Clintons are a classic example of how we did everything wrong during the 90s and slowly became a laughing stock rather than a respected nation.

Bill Clinton's legacy is NAFTA…and it ruined the US economy more than any act in the past 30 years. Wake-up and learn about your history before you elect officials to make the same mistakes all over again.

James Chirico, Brooklyn, NY   September 4th, 2007 5:53 pm ET

Hard Republicans will come out in droves against Hillary. Many in the middle do not trust her. The middle is disgusted with both houses of congress now controlled by the democrats. I believe the continued apathy of congress will lead to a Republican winning the presidency.

Who cares if he cheated on his wife; the most important person forgave him, and that was his wife. His actions are not the business of anyone outside of the name of Clinton. The political strife you speak of brought one of the greatest economic growth periods in our nation's history. I would welcome his role as first-man. I doubt we will get to see it, but it would be fun to watch how this situation will develop.

The first time I saw Bill Clinton with George H.W. Bush, I was really surprised. But after I saw them talking together, I realized they both have the same persona. They're both likable people. And Bill has made a life for himself, a good one it sounds like. He's positive. But then he always was.

Clinton's in the White House again. I can just imagine the multitude of headlines week after week. And the extreme negativity from the conservatives. I actually feel sorry for any President. They need a really good sense of humor to see the good side of everything.

I don't like this adversarial system we have.

Brandon - Nashville, TN   September 4th, 2007 5:12 pm ET

We should be over the adulterous jokes - it is very very old. After the Bush family, how could you even think to disrespect or feel any negativity towards the Clintons? We have seen the worst - Clinton or Obama, either way we will be in better shape.

Steven, Chicago, IL   September 4th, 2007 4:59 pm ET

So, lets see…the article is about Clinton's appearance on Oprah, and somehow the Republicans among us manage to turn the comments page into a political bash? Give me a break.

It wasn't Clinton who blew off our allies, wasted international sympathy, and manufactured the whole "America is at risk from Iraq's WMDs" story…all for the purpose of a poorly-planned and short-sighted invasion of a foreign power that he and others in his administration had tabbed as a likely candidate for a pro-American regime change, in the process further destabilizing an already volatile region and bolstering Al Queda's political currency by providing them with exactly the kind of American imperialistic act that Al Queda had claimed for years threatened the Middle East.

Its not Clinton who should be bashed on this board, folks. I'll take his philandering over the garbage this president is dealing, any day of the week.

Oh wait, he did!

Something tells me Dubya is gonna wish like hell (pun intended) he was Bill Clinton when he comes upon those pearly gates!

The Clintons and Obama in the White House. Now tell me, how better than that can it get? Democrat or Republican you have to admit this would be the most incredible combination ever.

Imagine what Bill Clinton can do as the First Husband (or First Man or First Gentleman or First Laddie for that matter) (Sounds weird but it just takes getting used to). He would be the most influential and powerful spouse to a US president to date. He wouldn't take the boring/poster/only-for-looks position that first ladies usually take, playing with balloons Easter bunnies from a White House balcony. He would go out there and try to bring change to this country and to this world. He would help his wife and President in a way that no other First Spouse has never been able to do before. Next bring in Barack Obama as Vice President. We would have the best administration ever to be conceived. It would mean 3 good, smart people running this country.

By the way "First Laddie" that's pretty funny and original. It's really funny.

Lance, Monrovia, CA   September 4th, 2007 2:31 pm ET

Under no circumstances should Hillary Clinton be elected President simply because her husband is Bill Clinton.

Bill Clinton was a good president. His existence and support of Hillary does NOT mean that Hillary Clinton will be a good president.

Bill Clinton is barred by law from having any cabinet position. He cannot legally advise Hillary in office.

I'll put it more bluntly. Should she actually be the frontrunner simply because her last name is Clinton?

Were the 1990's a time of unity? No. They were a time of political strife. Those times didn't start with George Bush.

We so desperately need a fresh turn of the page. We need someone in office that represents a new start and a new hope for our weary nation.

We very badly need Barack Obama in charge of this country. He has the intelligence, the charisma, and the street smarts to actually get elected and to actually bring our divided nation back together.

It's amazing that he's been doing so well and no one has even been paying attention to the race yet. Wait until more people actually start listening to him speak, listening to his ideas, YES REAL IDEAS for the future of this nation.

There's a reason that Oprah supports Obama. It is not because he is black, not because he is young, not because he is new.

It is because he is the best candidate. She supports him because he is the kind of visionary leader that can actually bring a fractured nation back together again.

Obama 08

Please, for the sake of your future, for the future of your families, take a look at Obama. Listen to him. Find out his positions. The more you know, the less suceptible to Clinton's star power you will be.

Rick, Chicago Illinois   September 4th, 2007 2:25 pm ET
