WASHINGTON (CNN) – Going stag in Australia, President Bush still managed to find a date to dinner with President John Howard and his wife Wednesday.

During a photo-op right before walking into dinner, Bush made a suggestion to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

"You can be my date," Bush said, to laughs.

That comment would have brought gasps if it had been made by the last President.

Cable King Pittsburgh Pa   September 5th, 2007 5:14 pm ET

Did Condi respond to the President or do they still have her muzzled? Has anyone seen or heard from the VP?

Bill, Streamwood, IL   September 5th, 2007 6:06 pm ET

I thought a gentleman was supposed to ASK a lady for a date.

Oops, forgot who we were talking about.

Never mind.

PS-Where was Laura Bush? She wasn't hanging around with the French First Lady, was she?

Raymond, El Paso TX   September 5th, 2007 6:12 pm ET

So did they play footsies under the table?

To Cable King from Pa. You have to understand that as robots get older it takes longer to recharge their batteries. He's probably still plugged into a wall somewhere.

Mandy, Scranton, PA   September 5th, 2007 6:13 pm ET

If I were Connie, I'd DECLINE the offer!

Lance, Monrovia, CA   September 5th, 2007 6:14 pm ET

The V.P. is in his bunker as usual, Condi is on the oil tanker named after her.

Bush, meanwhile, is on another planet, obviously.

Didn't they just release the GAO report yesterday? The one that said nearly 1 million Iraqis have been killed during the war?

Well, anyway, glad Bush can still get a date. Few of his ilk can.

Maybe that's why they turn to the DC Madame and airport bathrooms for comfort. They can't find any elsewhere.

What I love about Bush is that he doesn't in any way belittle or objectify the women in power he's forced to associate with; he never paws or gladhandles world leaders or makes smirking little jokes at their expense. He's a class act, that Bush. Just ask Angela Merkel.

It's called a sense of humor.

Pete, Nantucket MA   September 5th, 2007 8:52 pm ET

I heard Condi and Jay-Z are dating, actually.

B   September 5th, 2007 10:17 pm ET

This is should come as no surprise. The rumors have been flying for quite a while…………..

Joe Clark. Brisbane, Australia   September 6th, 2007 5:08 am ET

Prime Minister John Howard. Australia doesn't have a president.

SPH, Perth, Western Australia   September 6th, 2007 10:51 am ET

Fergit it, Condi. Go grab a footy match instead.

roger, conway sc   September 6th, 2007 1:59 pm ET

I just wonder if it is their first date…I think they make a cute couple the worst president of the u.s. & the worst sec of state ever….they deserve each other

Peg, Brookeland, Texas   September 6th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

I'd say yes to that hottie in a minute, especially if he had on jeans, a button-down shirt, boots and preferably a white cowboy hat. Not at a formal dinner, of course.

Tom Dedham, Mass   September 6th, 2007 8:57 pm ET

Unlike Clinton (the nations first black president) Bush actually can ask a black female cabinet member jokingly for a date.
