WASHINGTON (CNN) - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that embattled Sen. Larry Craig will not resign if he's able to get the disorderly conduct case against him dismissed in the next 25 days.

"He said that he is going to try to get the case in Minneapolis dismissed. That if he is unable to have that disposed of, prior to Sept. 30, it is his intention to resign from the Senate as he expressed last Saturday," McConnell told reporters.

"If he is able to get the case favorably disposed of in Minneapolis, it would be his intention to come back to the Senate to deal with the Ethics Committee case that he knows that he will have and to try to finish his term," he added.

Craig's seat will be up for re-election in 2008

Subject: Kennedy Bashing

Yes, Teddy was bad boy and the results were deadly. Not to excuse the little rich boys behavior (if there is a
heaven and hell we know where the Mass. Senator is headed)but drunk driving laws were a little different 100 years ago.

My point is that this is 2007 and your ancient records have been replaced by dvds.

Michael Buchanan, Hamburg, Germany   September 6th, 2007 7:40 am ET

Don't you wonder what they are ignoring by devoting so much coverage to this scandal?

Remember: It was Gary Condit and the dead intern right up to 9/11.

Jerry Walters, Avon, OH   September 6th, 2007 7:24 am ET

Fairly Odd Larry is a gift to Dems in 2008.

I hope to see him hanging out at bathrooms from sea to shining sea right on through Nov 2008!

John Mattingly, Louisville, Ky.   September 6th, 2007 1:49 am ET

Craig is toast & an easy target. McConnel, you represent me and I have voted for you, but even a poor state like Ky. no longer needs a powerful, pandering, prostitute who in league and concert with a fool has approved and contributed to the deaths of nearly 4 thousand American soldiers, wasted nearly a trillion $'s and increased the National Debt by a trillion+ dollars to cut taxes for the rich. No more Mitch, no more.. John

John from America   September 5th, 2007 8:20 pm ET

Oh please let Larry stay, my golf buddies and I haven't had this much fun in ages. Every time somebody goes to the bathroom they ask in a loud voice, "Larry Craig, are you in here?" or today when the course Marshall stopped in the restroom next to the 3rd tee box, the guys started yelling for him to stop tapping his foot so loud! This is the result of Larry's long career of gay bashing and family values theme – sorry Larry and GOP'ers this won't go away in mainland America! PLEASE STAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John, Madison WI   September 5th, 2007 7:46 pm ET

If Craig is allowed to withdraw his guilty plea to the misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge, does that mean the state could withdraw its offer and charge him with the original felony charge? Does he think withdrawing his guilty plea means he has cleared his record and there will be no further action against him? If this is the case, I hope he is the face of the Republican party from here on out, and that every Republican who wants to talk about how great they are to their constituency instead gets asked endlessly about the toilet paper picker upper who doesn't flush and has the wide stance.

James, Phoenix AZ   September 5th, 2007 7:20 pm ET

"Please, Please, Please let this thing drag on and on and on so that the Republicans can fight among themselves."

At least the Republicans are HAVING a dialogue about Senator Craig. What happens when a Kennedy is pulled drunk from a car? Or Democrat Gilmor is charged with assault of an airline employee??

(crickets chirping)

Nothing.

Wellmount, Rupert   September 5th, 2007 6:56 pm ET

Wait'ha min'hit foulks, wait just'ah [..] min'hit heere nah! It ain't dat bad izit? Okay [...]! Da man, oh as we rednecks call'em. The "It'zy" May just be just dat...and It'zy we means to say. Too late. The damage is already more than done!!

Sue Filutze, Idaho Falls, Id   September 5th, 2007 6:04 pm ET

Oh please, who's he going to pay off?
If this guy get's Minneapolis to reverse his guilty plea then there's a skunk in the woodpile. I mean after all the GOPER convention is there, so of course all those good little Repubs there will be doing their damdest to slip a few bucks to some judge and have the guilty plea thrown out. Meanwhile Craig will be warming up his toilet seat! Just like the repubs, protect your sex offenders above all else, not our troops, our economy, the american worker, or ports or borders just protect them dam sexual perverts. I mean who will they have left in the party if they don't keep these guys in office? Yea I live in Idaho, everyone's known for years Craig is a limp wrist, but he's got the LDS church and all their money and the REPUBS in Idaho licking his boots. We cannot get a Dem elected here because of the church, and MORAL MAJORITY! Which most of us call the Immoral Majority! They protect sexual perverts here like you cannot believe. We had a Legistalure moleting his Granddaughter. He finally got convicted but oh boy you should have heard the GOPER'S saying how innoccent he was. Also, the head of the Boy Scouts was protecting a "convicted sex offender" who's Mommy is a big wig in the party, so of course he was allowed to molest little boys and when they went and told, well, nothing happend, they just simply transferred him to another Scout unit! Sort of like the Priests. So, I for one will be shocked if Craig is out! His plan all along was to attempt to buy time. Sad that his wife and adopted kids believe his BS but then I guess the alternative is pretty gross. Politics as ususal!

Michael Baker, Weehawken, New Jersey   September 5th, 2007 5:42 pm ET

Without meaning to be rude or impolite, it would seem to me that Senator Craig's best defense would be evidence of whatever he 'innocently' came to the bathroom to do. What I find strange about the recitation of the facts is that he apparently didn't object to going with the officer on the basis that he still had some business to finish in the stall.

Wheres Hsu   September 5th, 2007 4:57 pm ET

Hsu is Missing?

RightyTighty   September 5th, 2007 4:50 pm ET

He must be a closet Democrat too.

But that’s OK, his constituents aren't and just watch him not get re-elected. Republicans ARE the party of family values..

Quinn, Oakland, CA   September 5th, 2007 4:33 pm ET

How do social conservatives feel about the prospect that a man who plead guilty to cruising for gay sex in a public restroom would continue serving in the U.S. Senate with the support of the GOP party leadership?

Greg, Houston   September 5th, 2007 4:28 pm ET

He plead guilty, what's there to overturn?

Bill, Streamwood, IL   September 5th, 2007 4:27 pm ET

Larry Craig is looking more and more like a major league, long-term nightmare for the GOP.

What happened to Ann Coulter? What's her take on Senator Craig's sexuality?
I thought she could spot a homosexual a mile away. Didn't she have something to say about John Edwards a while back? Why haven't we heard from her?

Ann, you're letting the Republican Party down.

mike O'Brion   September 5th, 2007 4:20 pm ET

Mitch , watch your comments my man they might well come back to haunt you.

Atlanta, Georgia   September 5th, 2007 4:19 pm ET

Enoungh already. Craig; just go away, we all know what you did as well as your intentions. I believe the police offficer. Save yourself, our party and your family the embarrassment of having to relive the disgusting details of your so called "WIDE STANCE" (YEAH RIGHT)....

McJackson Jr., Milwaukee Wisconsin   September 5th, 2007 4:16 pm ET

Both parties are embarrassing themselves. But neither is as embarrassing as Craig himself. He should skulk away quietly.

Gordon Wolf PhD, Napa, CA   September 5th, 2007 4:13 pm ET

Talk about losing your moral compass. He's not concerned if he did the act and what that means in terms of his ability to lead. He's concerned can he get away with it,,,,that willl make it all OK and he can remain in power. Double speak; nothing happened, because I got it expunged. (No matter what I admitted to when I got caught.)

How much more of this do we have to go through. We have a President, who couldn't get a job running a corner store if the selcction process was based on merit and past on the job performance, and members of congress who don't let personal shame effect them.

pl. at the UN for a while.   September 5th, 2007 3:53 pm ET

I do not see any reason why Senator Craig should bind himself again, this time with a deadline. Legal cases usually take longer than 25 days. Justice is not served well by setting time lines.

Michael, Dallas TX   September 5th, 2007 3:50 pm ET

Ah, another great moment in history for the family values party.

Lou, Beverly Hills CA   September 5th, 2007 3:47 pm ET

I actually hope Craig doesn't resign. I hope he turns around and runs for president, wins, then pushes for legalized gay restroom sex.

Colin, Milwaukee WI   September 5th, 2007 3:36 pm ET

Hard to oversee Minnesota reversing his own guilty plea to disorderly conduct he's already made.

Craig is as uncertain about resigning as he is about his sexual orientation.

TopDog, Macon GA   September 5th, 2007 3:33 pm ET

Please, Please, Please let this thing drag on and on and on so that the Republicans can fight among themselves.
