Romney's Boston headquarters was burglarized over the weekend.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A television and eight laptop computers were stolen from Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign headquarters, according to a Boston Police official.

The break-in took place late Sunday night or early Monday morning, campaign spokesman Kevin Madden told CNN

“We won’t comment on anything past that because it is a police investigation,” Madden said. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor now seeking the GOP presidential nomination, main political headquarters is located at 585 Commercial Street. The intruders entered through a third floor window. The building does have 24 hour security and police are now interviewing people on the scene.

It is the second burglary in recent weeks of a presidential hopeful’s office. Sen. Chris Dodd’s, D-Connecticut, Senate office in Hartford was broken into and police have since charged a homeless man with that crime.

How can he keep America safe if he can't even protect his own offices?

Shawnie Cannon, Grants Pass OR   September 11th, 2007 11:23 am ET

They went through a third story window???? There is no way it is a coincidental burglary. Who did it, I don't know, but the top suspects would be those who have most to gain.

Clinton, Giuliani, or maybe even Thompson's wife would be my top speculations.

CNN, do you have any hero reporters that want to uncover the story of a career?

A. Thomas, New York, NY   September 11th, 2007 8:14 am ET

It is likely by one republican candidate. He wants to know Romney's play book and how he raised so much money.

It is silly to blame it on Hillary. He is not her worry - Giuliani or Obama maybe.

Sian, LA, CA   September 11th, 2007 1:19 am ET

There is a vast elliptical energy source that can only be tapped through the concussion of consecutive hallucinogens mixed together with some freshly prepared brain matter. It is therefore, through this elliptical energy of great and magnificant power that the scion of those who preceded the succession of America that we hereby determine the guilt of certain parties without the inconvenience of dusty old evidence.

Let us chatter under this great magnificent hallucination that we know who did the bulglary when really, we have a clue that is equivalent to the omniprescent truth that 2+2=6.

Val Davydov, Agawam, MA   September 10th, 2007 11:23 pm ET

You can tell that most of these posts are written by far-left liberals lacking humane feelings towards those that don't agree with their views, like this one for instance:

"HA HA Serves him right!

Posted By JC Indianapois, IN : September 10, 2007 1:49 pm" - very distasteful!

Why jump the gun? Let the police investigation take its course.

HAWK,TEXAS   September 10th, 2007 10:10 pm ET

UH OH! THE REPUBLICANS MADE A MISTAKE AND HIT ONE OF THEIR OWN. KARL MUST HAVE GOTTEN CHENEY'S MESSAGE MESSED UP.

Jim, Durham, NC   September 10th, 2007 9:22 pm ET

Why would a common thief go all the way to the third floor of a building when there was probably plenty of things on the first floor?

Thieves don't like spending time running around buildings whose offices might be alarmed. They want to get in, grab something, and get out. Running up and down stairs is asking to get caught by police responding to a silent alarm.

The only question is whose campaign it was. To answer that, we need to know who feels threatened by Romney on the Republican side, and who thinks he's going to be the nominee on the Democratic side?

RA Las Vegas, NV   September 10th, 2007 6:36 pm ET

Howard Dean came back from the after life as a messenger; flew up and entered through the third floor window right under the noses of our home land 24 hour security and police are now interviewing people on the scene who cannot the devils angles.

Karl Rove strikes again. The truckload of fingers pointing to the left just makes it all the more clear.

Brad, Columbia, SC   September 10th, 2007 5:39 pm ET

Wow… anything else we want to accuse Hillary Clinton/Democrats/Karl Rove/the Romney kids of while we're at it? Who needs evidence when speculation is oh so much more satisfying?

I think an old lady just got her purse stolen…

Come on, everyone, simmer down…

Hemry Miller, Cary, NC   September 10th, 2007 5:33 pm ET

"Modernism and progressivism"?

Is that what they're calling socialism and communism these days?

But Lee of Mays Landing is right about one thing: we cannot afford the continuation of this present disaster. So far as I can tell, the only way to avoid that is to elect Ron Paul–both the run-of-the-mill Republicans and all the Democrats seem to be devoted to the principle that the first rule of government of the people, by the people, and for the people is screw the people.

Linda Vaitkus, Quincy MA   September 10th, 2007 5:18 pm ET

Isn't that apropos? On every level in MA politics this seems to be protocol. Mayor Phelan of Quincy had his office ransacked his first day on the job. This is about as annoying a high school antic as the DoD losing all their armament exchange records. Come on…. :-\

Dan Matthews   September 10th, 2007 5:13 pm ET

The liberals do not steal, it was probably Giuliani supporters

rob   September 10th, 2007 5:13 pm ET

Maybe the laptops escaped under their own power, feeling repulsed and nauseated by the work they were forced to do.

Mo, Chicago IL   September 10th, 2007 5:09 pm ET

Why would it be the Dems? We're still in the primaries here.

And don't forget, Watergate was completed by Republicans. So the natural place to look would be back at them again.

mike ottawa, il.   September 10th, 2007 4:29 pm ET

Smells like Karl Rove to me.

Coach Haughton   September 10th, 2007 4:28 pm ET

Republicans making accusation, jumping to conclusion with no visual evidence.
Go figure.

RB   September 10th, 2007 4:21 pm ET

Sure Cary, it's easy to blame the left, but they would know any information is obsolete anyway, since Mitt changes his mind evertime he changes his socks.

Sounds like an inside job, but Rove could never make it up to a third floor window.

Bea, Hoboken, NJ   September 10th, 2007 4:20 pm ET

I hope that all the comments suggesting that the Democrats, and in particular Hillary, might have done the deed are just joking.

Right? Right????

T. Uribe, Santa Fe, NM   September 10th, 2007 4:18 pm ET

Who stole Romney's laptop? With the impending investigation of Norman Hsu's illegal network of campaign contributions pointly squarely at Hillary Clinton, I wouldn't put it past them.

P. Alish , La Canada, Ca.   September 10th, 2007 4:15 pm ET

Let's faceit, they're desperate. This is the Clinton's last gasp. If America decides to go conservative for another eight years, Hilary will NEVER be President. They have nothing to lose by orchestrating these blatant hits. They feel threatened by the success in Iraq, it doesn't bode well for the liberal agenda, does it? Bottom line, Clintons are VERY motivated, and Id look at them first..

Alisa S. , Dover, ME.   September 10th, 2007 4:10 pm ET

if Romney doesn't have a chance at being Repubican nominee, why would someone steal his personal information? who would have a motive other than Clinton's moveon.org fringe? Why would you risk stealing info and high tech equipment from a Presidential candidate's office when you can burgle someone's house with less security? This has the Clintons' MO all over it.

Barry White, Des Moines, IA   September 10th, 2007 4:02 pm ET

It is another Karl Rove trick to set this up and blame democrats and especially Hillary. Democrats and Hillary in particular are not that stupid to break into their rival who is in the last place in polls. They have nothing to gain. It is just like swift boat attack! But, americans are not that stupid this time to fall into that trap.

Matt, Paris, Illinois   September 10th, 2007 3:56 pm ET

QUOTE: "doesn't surprise me, especially if this is found to be done by the liberal left. They'll stoop to anything to make a gain."

That's nice, Cary. You know it was Karl Rove who planted bugging devices in his own office and claimed Democrats were spying on him, right? Or how he once stole stationery from a Dem candidate and used it to advertise "free booze and women" at homeless shelters? You knew about that right?

The Right Wing Nut Jobs will do anything to make a gain.
================

In seriousness, there's probably nothing political about this.

Kim, Sacramento, CA   September 10th, 2007 3:55 pm ET

Both Clinton and Dodd have had campaign offices broken into and that was posted on this ticker. So, does that mean it is 2 points for the right and 1 for the left? Come on people, why does it have to be a conspiracy? Don't you think it is more likely that it was a true burglary or some kids playing around then another campaign? I think so.

Jeff, Keller, Texas, USA   September 10th, 2007 3:44 pm ET

I wonder if the guys were wearing suits, taped the door lock open, or left any bugs :)

spraynardkruger   September 10th, 2007 3:43 pm ET

It isn't like he couldn't pay for new equipment. The guy is only leading the polls because he can toss millions into advertising from his personal fortune.

Greenville, NC   September 10th, 2007 3:35 pm ET

You people should be ashamed! this is bad no matter who it is and we should all feel that justice be certain in this case as with any other unlawful break in!

Jon, Pittsburgh, PA   September 10th, 2007 3:34 pm ET

The comments regarding the break-in would be hilariously funny, if the people weren't being serious. The fact remains that the first campaign Karl Rove worked on - he planted a bug in his own office and then blamed the other side for it. The facts are what they are. Republicans have been altering the facts for so long now; they will say and/or do anything to win an election.

When people are so one-sided in their political feelings, like most Republicans I know, you can't even have a conversation with them. They have their minds made up before they have any facts. It is truly sad.

Coach Haughton   September 10th, 2007 3:33 pm ET

You guys may be looking at this all wrong.
1)If this incident had anything to do with another canditate Is it not more likely to be somebody he is running against right now? The democrats would target eachother, Giuliani or Thompson.

2)What a good way to get your name in the news, Dodd and Romney both had breakins, both are starving for media attention. Just a thought.

3)WATERGATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!lol

4) Vote Obama

Ted, Long Beach, CA   September 10th, 2007 3:32 pm ET

Roger this is Mitt Romney we are talking about not Al Gore kid…

andrew s rostolder hillsdale nj.   September 10th, 2007 3:28 pm ET

cary-lowell IN.
you are a jerk,,,, the only break ins are done by the other guys..

Lee, Mays Landing NJ   September 10th, 2007 3:23 pm ET

Rabid Rupublicans have no shame.
they are true believers in a "jihad" against modernism and progressivism.
Therefore they will come on here and say and do anything including accusing their favorite bogeyman, Hillary Clinton.
I'd really rather not have Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton for a quarter of century but I'd vote Hillary over any of these shameless republican pukes very easily.
We cannot afford the continuation of this present disaster.

roger, conway sc   September 10th, 2007 3:14 pm ET

smells funky…probably an inside job…one or all of his 5 sons "just serving their country" the best way that they know

Cable King Pittsburgh Pa   September 10th, 2007 3:12 pm ET

Pretty funny to hear the accusations against Hillary and Dems.

Anyone with a second grade education knows that Romney has zero chance of being R nominee. If Hillary were to do a "Nixon" it would only make remote sense to bust into Barack's offices.

BRIAN, FLORIDA   September 10th, 2007 3:10 pm ET

THE ROMNEY CAMP DID IT THEMSELVES. SAME RIGHT WING CARL ROVE TACTICS. THEY DID IT FOR FREE MEDIA ATTENTION.THEY DID IT SO IDIOTS LIKE CARY FROM LOWELL, IN AND RUSH L.COULD TALK ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THE REAL ISSUES

George, Champaign, IL   September 10th, 2007 3:07 pm ET

Come on, guys. Burglary happens everyday. Those of you who cheered because it happened to Romney, or blamed the liberal left (do you have any evidence?) should be ashamed of yourself.

Joe CT independent   September 10th, 2007 3:05 pm ET

Well, at least it was an even number of stolen laptops…..four expressing one view on an issue, and four on another.

Justino, Ada OK   September 10th, 2007 2:59 pm ET

Innocent until proven guilty…but it smells like a Clinton again. Like Romney or not, he has the momentum right now and the Clintons are fully aware of that.

Cary - Lowell, IN   September 10th, 2007 2:59 pm ET

Hmm Kathleen Willey's book manuscript disappears, David Schipper (pres. Clinton impeachment trial documenter) has his manuscript stolen; Im beginning to see signs here of a vast left wing conspiracy. Of course, I wouldn't name names.

James Claremont, CA   September 10th, 2007 2:57 pm ET

Perhaps the FBI confiscated them. They might think Romney and Osama have the same hairdresser.

Pat, Huntington, NY   September 10th, 2007 2:55 pm ET

The accusations that the Clintons have something to do with this are not only pathetic, but if anyone had something to do with it, it was a Republican since they have mastered the art of campaign headquarter break-ins.

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   September 10th, 2007 2:52 pm ET

So much for rational discourse: Mrs. Clinton is tried, convicted and hung without evidence. Must be the same GOP members supporting Senator Craig for his "do over" guilty plea.

Ya gotta love the "law and order" party - they break the laws, toss out the Constitution - and check my memory - what party was Nixon from???

pat, huntington, ny   September 10th, 2007 2:51 pm ET

The baseless accusations that this has something to do with the Clintons are pathetic.

DJ, los angeles   September 10th, 2007 2:41 pm ET

Nixon would be proud

LoooseyGoosey   September 10th, 2007 2:33 pm ET

Didn't Hillary work for Dick?

Mike Smith, New Orleans, Louisiana   September 10th, 2007 2:24 pm ET

Does this mean Richard Nixon is still alive?

Matt, Nebraska   September 10th, 2007 2:14 pm ET

Another break-in. Wow, deja vu! You'd never guess there was a Clinton in the run for the White House!

dyinglikeflies, NYC   September 10th, 2007 2:04 pm ET

If the thieves were searching for original ideas in Romney's office, they certainly walked away empty handed. Unless they stole his hair gel, this burglary shouldn't have too much of an impact on his campaign.

Bubba, Swainsboro GA   September 10th, 2007 2:02 pm ET

No problem! Mitt changes so often that the information on the computers is out of date by now.

JC Indianapois, IN   September 10th, 2007 1:49 pm ET

HA HA Serves him right!

J.B. Oak Lawn IL   September 10th, 2007 1:48 pm ET

Poor Mitt- he'll have to dip into his personal fortune again to replace his resources.

HuggyBear, Gotham, CO   September 10th, 2007 1:38 pm ET

Rove leaves Bush, and is already at work on Romney's campaign, staging another break in that can be blamed on the Dems (probably Hillary). YOu heard it here first.

Boo Taubman   September 10th, 2007 1:29 pm ET

WATERGATE!

jw walters, canadian,ok   September 10th, 2007 1:29 pm ET

Now we have Mitt-a-gate!!

Anonymous   September 10th, 2007 1:28 pm ET

can you say WATERGATE!!!

Fabian Palomino, New York City   September 10th, 2007 1:17 pm ET

Looks like Hillary's hired gun private investigator Anthony Pellicano has gone on an early plumbing expedition. I suggest to Giuliani's campaign staff that they go to Costco and buy some extra locks. That's why I want Obama to win, I'm sick of the Clintons dirty tricks.

Arington, VA   September 10th, 2007 1:10 pm ET

this is sad - i hope they find those who did this…

Cary- Lowell, IN   September 10th, 2007 1:07 pm ET

doesn't surprise me, especially if this is found to be done by the liberal left. They'll stoop to anything to make a gain.
