They receive treatment in emergency rooms for everything from giving birth to having colds to being treated for gun shot wounds. Why would they ever consider paying a premium for health insurance when they receive free health care services? When politicians quote the number of 43 million uninsured is being disingenuous. The real question is, "Will illegal immigrants be issued prescription cards?" Illegal immigrants already have free health care at public hospitals. Sooner or later the courts will rule that the benefits will have to be extended to undocumented immigrants. (Witness the N.J. town that decided to rescind its ordinance barring renting to undocumented persons because the legal fees of defending this would have been too high.) While "universal" health care might not be literally true, "hemispheric" health care will be. The best the public can hope for is that the costs of paying for health care for undocumented persons is including in calculating the total cost for this program. This will ultimately be mandated by the courts, trust me, so we might as well realistically confront the costs. Doesn't matter how this plan is framed initially.
