Clinton: I am not a lesbian

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Sen. Hillary Clinton's sexuality is not the most pressing issue on the presidential campaign trail, but it is likely to get a fair amount of attention on a lazy Friday in the nation’s capital.

The Advocate asked Clinton about past rumors that she is gay.

The New York Democrat tells “The Advocate” that she is not a lesbian, according to a story in Friday’s edition of The New York Daily News.

"It's not true, but it is something that I have no control over," Clinton tells the magazine in a story set for publication next week.

“People will say what they want to say," she added.

The comments came in response to a question posed by Sean Kennedy, an editor of the Advocate: "How do you respond to the occasional rumor that you're a lesbian?"

Kennedy tells CNN he asked Clinton about the rumors because "they are a point of solidarity between her and the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community."

"Because her political opponents, and others, have used the word 'lesbian' to hurt her personally and politically, she knows first hand the stigma associated with homosexuality just as gay people do," Kennedy said. "She did not seem surprised by the question in the least and responded like the experienced politician she is."

The interview was conducted immediately after last month's Human Rights Campaign presidential forum.

UPDATE: The Advocate has published the full article on its Web site

So what, even if she is? Who cares? I'm voting for her because she is the best qualified person to lead our broken country after 8 years of the village idiot from Crawford.

Hypocrites!!!! I love it! You dems are unbelievable. You yell and scream that Moveon doesn't speak for the dems, including Hillary, but then the New York Daily news writes an article questioning Hillary's sexual orientation, and it is a Republican conspiracy. You are all crazy!! Don't think we won't call you out in it!

I will write this real slow so you Clintonista's will be able to read it:

Nobody said anything about her being a lesbian, this is all her madeup story, no Republican or Republican candidate has spoken about it and probably won't.

I will mention again, she is against gay marriage so is she hateful and spiteful like the GOP or do you pick and choose?

The majority of Americans are now against the war and the majority are against gay marriage, so should we use both as barometers for national policy?

I love all the right winger one liners here! You guys definitely have a sense of humor lol! Instead of sending candidates to compete for Presidential elections...maybe your republican candidates can run for Court Jester? :)

can this campaign get any more juvenile? First Hillary calls Cheney "Darth Vader", then the republicans call her a Lesbian.

Are all politicians 12 years old?

Please people, grow up! The country can't afford this nonsense! Especially the soldiers in a war zone risking their lives.

I have a proposal: the next candidate to issue a personal insult should have to leave the campaign. I dare you all to make the pledge.

I think that whether she wants to be a lesbian is up to her. We don't have a right to judge other people. Reporters should watch their words. I say this because they talk but they never really know what's going on. I bet they would be devastated if they found out a family was gay/lesbian. But you can't do anything. The difference between stars/politics and reporters is that you never see a story about a reporter like you do about stars

This is just another Carl Rove trick.
He accused every candidate against W of being gay. He is obviously still working for the Repugs.

According to the book The Architect, Louis Rove (Carl's father) was gay and decided to leave the family at Christmas in 1969. Young Carl was ticked that his father was leaving because he wanted to go live in California.

Carl Rove is an agnostic who has used the GAY red herring to bait every evangelical homophobe for political purposes. There is no reason to believe that Carl has stopped his dirty tricks.

Hey, isn't the Daily News owned by the polically biased Rupert Murdoch?

It sounds like "NIXON'S" ghost has surfaced again. The master of dirty tricks and innuendos "Tricky Dick" has raised his ugly head again. Im waiting to hear about more Re"PIG"licans dirty tricks and Watergate style burglaries in an effort to keep control of the White House that they stole from Al Gore.

It reminds me of that denial by the other fearless Clinton, "I did not have sex with that woman." He didn't lie then, because of the unique way he defined "sex". I wonder if we need to ask her how she defines "lesbian"?

This is so pathetic. I see all these criticisms against her. Criticize her views or her policy choices, because that is all that matters. But its just not enough, we have to criticize her sexuality... because everyone knows the only way a woman can be assertive is if she's gay, right? And as for her marriage, that's her personal business. Why must we criticize her choice to stay with her marriage? Its a little confusing, actually. We're all about the family and sanctity of marriage, but not for the Clintons? Or is this just another stupid thing to spin about? Stick to the issues, that is what is important.

PEOPLE: Read the whole quote..she says she has no control over what people say about her. No wonder our country has so many whacko war mongers, the populace never reads, researches and just jumps to conclusions after hearing the first manufactuered soundbite. How depressing the USA is at this time in it's great history..

Let's see. Does she dress up in men's suits at charity balls? No. Has she been married at least three times? No. Does she vote against gay marriage and then try to pick up women in the ladies' room by tapping her foot? No. Does her daughter hate her? No. Hmm. Well, she's not a Republican, so she must be a lesbian.
