"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program."
--President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."
Letter to President Clinton, signed by:
-- Democratic Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others, Oct. 9, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."
-Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has reinvigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies."
Letter to President Bush, Signed by:
-- Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), and others, Dec 5, 2001

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandate of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and th! e means of delivering them."
-- Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction."
-- Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..."
-- Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002

"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force -- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security."
-- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction."
-- Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002

"He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do"
-- Rep. Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members ... It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons."
-- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction."
-- Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002

"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real..."
-- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003

So Senator Pelosi, who exactly is the "we" you speak of? Certainly, it couldn't be the Senate or the House of Representatives.

If you're going to hold anyone accountable, don't forget to include the House and Senate in there, too.

Tina - Grand Prairie, Tx

I'm confused by your statements. First you call for President Bush to be impeached for war crimes. Then when I tell you evidence must be presented you go off on a diatribe about how the soldiers are being treated... of "bills that send them back to war before they've had time to rest"... "they've passed bills to keep them there longer than needed".

Who is "they"? Did President Bush pass legislation or was it Congress which voted? And could you please cite for us which laws prohibit soldiers from being deployed and then redeployed? Tell us which law(s) specify exactly how much R&R soldiers are to be alloted.

Sorry, Tina. You don't have facts. You an opinion about the war - but not facts.

James:

There are MOUNDS of evidence. I'm not speculating. I've seen it in the Iraq War reports directly. There is corruption at the highest level. And most specifically, (other than false pretenses which are PROVEN fact.), I am speaking of the way the soldiers are being treated... of the bills that send them back to war before they've had time to rest and recover... of soldiers who are hurt, tired, and suffering from severe PTSD having to go back because they've passed bills to keep them there longer than needed. That's not from moveon.org, sir. That is a FACT. Read your legislation before you decide to admonish someone about something you obviously know little about.

Have a pleasant day, yourself. :)

Well while you are holding Bush accountable you had better include just about every other politician in Washington as well since all of you continue to allow the war to go on regardless of public opinion. You received your mandate and you failed pretty damned miserably!

this administration is responsible for not ending the war in iraq, and any other calamities this country has. we have a president who, even before certain proposals are put before hime sataes, "let them hurry up and get it to me so i can veto it". come on people, get real. realize we are living under a dictatorship and not a democracy. The president stated the other day on a lot of things overseas that the american people are not please with, but not once did he state all the things the american people are not pleased with right here at home. The president should sweep around his own front door before he continues to sweep around other leaders doors.

"The impeachment is off the table" or "Cut-off funding to the new bill"! These are all good slogans to stir up the base and get some talking points for right wingers to slam Nancy and her team. What Nancy is doing is politically wise moves. If she brings the impeachment on vote, its going to fail, and so as war funding bill. That is exactly Carl Rove wants. Next day there will be big adverisements in Wall Street as "Traitors". And, democrats will loose bunch of seats. Everyone knows what Bush-Cheney did to drag us into this mess. Is impeachment hearing or vote going to strip their offices? All they could do is to attach conditions on war funding for deployment. Don't be ignorants to put all the blame on democrats. Blame it on republicans who are prolonging this war and Bush's policies.

"Why is impeachment off the table when we're talking about WAR CRIMES here? "

Because, Tina, to prosecute anyone for a crime you must have EVIDENCE. Speculation, conspiracy theory, or believing it because Moveon.Org 'said so' does not constitute a FACT.

Sorry if that bursts your Impeach-Bush bubble. The good news is - you still have the RIGHT to hold false views based on partisan anger and call for a baseless impeachment on a public ticker.

Warm Regards!

Why is impeachment off the table when we're talking about WAR CRIMES here? Pres. Bush and VP Cheney should be held accountable for their actions by standing trial. And neither of them should be in office. They are both war criminals and should have their day in court. What they are doing to the American troops is inexcusable. These men and women are not given the chance to rest or recover. They're being treated horrifically. We all saw what happened to the Vietnam Vets. Let's not make the same mistake that was made in the past. Learn from history and hold these people accountable for what they've done.

$50 Billion vote coming up for the Iraq effort... what are you going to do, Nancy?

Vote down party line and NOT approve the funding?

Or acquiesce to President Bush again - as you have time and time and time again?

Yes - be FIRM in your rhetoric and weak in your voting. Wink-Wink - Thanks Nancy (from the conservatives).

Thank you Johney of Florida explaining to these ignorant people. You are absolutely right that unless there is majority for democrats, nothing can be done and always the blame is passed on to Nancy and her team. When a simple Webb amendment where all he has asked for enough rest time for troops at home can't even get 60 votes in the senate, how can Nancy brings up a bill to stop funding for the war which is bound to fail? And then, democrats will be labeled as traitors. Its a big trap that democrats should not fall into. All they have to do is to explain what Johney just said in clear terms to the public and the media.

There are a bunch of comments above saying that Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats have not accomplished what the set out to do. That is because they do not have enough of a majority to pass anything, and then when they do, Bush vetoes it. In the House and the Senate, there are not enough Democrats to actually have a true majority to accomplish anything. If you want the Democrats to end the war and fix everything the Republicans destroyed, then they need a REAL majority! It is not Pelosi's fault that everytime a bill comes up setting a time-table, it doesn't get passed because there aren't enough Democrats to pass it. Also, one comment up there said that she said she would not impeach Bush, well duh, it would be political suicide. She ALREADY KNOWS that there, again, aren't enough Democratic votes to even come close to impeaching Bush(have you heard any Republican say they will support the impeachment of Bush?)so why should she even introduce a bill that she knows will never come close to passing? All it will do is look like a total defeat to the Speaker of the House thus ruining her career! Maybe if we gave them more of a majority where they could pass things without Republican support, everything that we want could get accomplished such as ending the war. Or we could just sit here and be complete idiots and complain that nothing is happening with the new Democrat "majority" and blame them, but once again the Republicans still have too much power for the Democrats to accomplish anything, and there is still a Republican President who veteos everything the Democrats narrowly pass. We can change both of these obstacles in 2008, by giving both the House and the Senate more of a majority and occupying the White House with a Democrat. That is the solution! Now stop complaining about Nancy Pelosi failure as the Speaker, and start solving the problem, which of course is the Republicans.

Pelosi and Reid are a prime example of what the Democrats DON'T need at a time like this. We need someone with the resolve to end this war, not sit around yapping about the Repubs. Pelosi strolls in like some queen announcing 'Impeachment' off the table. Really? Because she says so? Pelosi YOU OWN the war in Iraq. As the Cheney Bush dogshow have never taken responsibility for 'anything' apparently, Pelosi joins that club denying any as well. Get some backbone and do what we told you we wanted, impeachment.

Why is that the same people who are questioning the capablity of Nancy Pelosy have asked what the past republican speaker Dennis Hassart did for 6 years? There were more bills introduced for the people in less than a year than during the last 6 years. And, Bush who never vetoed any bill is now bent on vetoing even a blank paper presented by democrats. Unless, there is a clear majority in house and senate, nothing will get done in this obstructinist congress.

Being a lifelong Demorcrat, I am VERY disappointed in the "non-action action" delivered by the Democratic House and Senate. They had a chance to get rid of Bush, end the war, and put America back on top. Instsead they chose "Chastizement" as their course of action. Shame on them, and Pelosi especially. To kowtow to the Republicans is the most disgusting display of cowardice. The Dems are now using the election as a "retreat"...no action taken till Nov. 2008. Dumb move....that's when the people will take action and determine who to keep and who to kick out...so I would be very careful in either party....the American voters are PO'd.....and no party is safe.

The commentators criticising Nancy Pelosi about not doing enough to end the Iraq war need to read the US Constitution, I believe it's Article I, describing the powers of Congress. Then they should read the part about the powers of the President. Then you will all learn that she CANNOT end this war under the current situation where the Dems have a slim majority and the Repubs control the white house. As a previous comment noted, it is time for the Votes to step up to the plate in November 2008 and vote out the Republicans who are standing in the Speaker's and Democrat's way to do what needs to be done with the idiot war.

Expecting the Democrats to fix the slew of problems created by the Republicans over ALL the years they were in power is simply asinine. Of course it definitely gives Republicans something to whine about and try to spin like they do everything else.

Republicans have not only jeopardized America's security since the rest of the world no longer respects or trusts us, they have also jeopardized America's economy as everyone can see with the dollar at an all time low. This stupid mess we're in will not be fixed easily or quickly.

I wish more Democratic leaders like Speaker Pelosi would get over the "Bush is the cause of all our troubles . . ."

Bush is out soon. He and his minions will no longer be able to further darken the pages of US history.

Let's hear instead of how she plans to undo the damage of his disasterous presidency

What do you and the Democrats need Pelosi...a mandate from the American voters??!! I thought (and voted accordingly) that was what you were given last November. Get testy if you want to, and speak in political double talk, but dammit, you and the rest of the so-called Democratic leadership get off of your collective butts and start putting this sorry excuse for an Executive Branch of the government's feet to the fire by executing the will of the American voter!!

And America is most certainly holding this pitiful 110th liberal Congress accountable for its shameless non-supporting for our troops fighting for their lives to give Iraq Freedom and America security.

No, its not "Bush's War" and its definitely not "The Republican's War".

Its America/Iraq/36othernations vs Tyranny. Democracy against Radical Islam. And yes, I would gladly fight today to keep my two children from having to fight 20 yrs from now. What don't you understand about that Nancy? Loser..

Pelosi couldn't manage her way out of a paper bag much less "hold this administration accountable". She lost all credibility on this issue when she "took impeachment off the table". I had great hope for her prior to becoming speaker of the house but she's as much a part of the problem now as the adminsitration itself in my opinion.

"That's what we were hoping for when we elected a Democratic majority. I hasnt happened yet…"

It never will. The Republicans' grand strategy is, continue in a monolithic block to support our Worst. President. Ever., so that the Dem majority, not big enough to override vetoes, looks ineffective.

This war is now the congressional Repubs'. Bush is off the hook. They're now the ones slavishly supporting Bush despite the idiocy that is the Iraq war.

The real problem is, people that voted in a Dem majority last fall should've started in earlier elections, and should have elected more Dems the last time around.

Don't blame the Democrats for cowardly Repubs too chicken to challenge Bush.

Hey Nancy, Is your son still being paid $180,000 a year by InfoUSA to not show up for work? Where did he send that resume to get that kind of job?? What influence have you provided to InfoUSA to help them collect America's personal data? None?? Sure...

Yes, we are living in a culture of corruption, and you Nancy, are one of the finest examples of a corrupt leader living in denial while pointing fingers at others. Your leading abilities are a complete disgrace.

I believe that she will try to hold the Bush administration accountable, but will she and her fellow Democrats succeed? No, that isn't likely. There isn't enough of a Democratic majority in either the House or the Senate to bring about any sort of real change - the Republican minority and sitting president can and do serve as very effective roadblocks, and then have the gall to accuse this Congress of being a do-nothing group.

She is doing what she can, but the lack of a 2/3rds majority and a misogynist and anti-California right are preventing her from doing much more than talk.
