"Steve Schoner of AZ - exactly who are we supposed to be declaring war against? Your response is typical of a red state rethuglican who's education is so lacking you don't know what you are talking about…which makes it scary that there are peopel like you out there who'll vote for someone like Gingrich.

Afganistan and Pakistan... That is where the ilk that launched 9/11 came from. Oh... We have a half ass effort is Afganistan, but if we had a full effort there and in the tribal regions of Pakistan this war would be over years ago. Invading Iraq was a stupid mistake. And not declaring outright war before Congress was previous mistake. As for my "education" maybe you should check your spelling before you post. That is an indication of your education level. And by the way. I am not a "Red State Republican", and my education level is college graduate 1975.

American Foibles

In the Sunday, Sept. 30th Editorial of the Omaha World Herald, the editors correctly point out several factors we should keep in mind as we anticipate a swing in American politics and leadership away from the more conservative options towards the more liberal, and I fear, ever more left towards wing extremes that not even moderate Republicans want to embrace as they contemplate voting for Hillary and their next U.S. Senator here in Nebraska.

Like Newt Gingrich. I will say to all, Hillary’s election to president is very much a political possibility that may very well become a political reality after the next election. Perhaps it is with that thought in mind Hillary seems to be trying to balance her words, thoughts and actions to accommodate not only swing voters, but also moderate Republicans still bristling at what was done to their party, and will continue to be done if certain people have their way.

For example, note the editorials take on the “burden of taxes.” While it is correct in noting that the restraining of taxation is central in encouraging economic activity, it fails to point out that if all the money is in the hands of the few, rich, famous, and fabulously wealthy, that the consumer has no money to consume with, and economic vitality doesn’t just die and wither on the vine, it leads to, and can result in, populist revolts resulting in either communism, or military juntas, and/or dictatorships

If FDR AND THE PROGRESSIVES HAD NOT EVOLVED “WEALTH TAXATION” IN THE MIDST OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION, AMERICA MAY WELL HAVE GONE THE WAY OF RUSSIA -- INTO COMMUNISM, OR ITALY AND GERMANY -- INTO FASCISM, OR DOWN THE PATH HUEY LONG WAS TRYING TO LEAD AMERICA -- ENDING IN ASSASSINATION.

Let us not forget that FDR’s solution of wealth redistribution through taxation was not only the correct step at the time, but a vital ongoing element of Taxation policy upon the wealthy which keeps money in the hands of the consumer and allows them to consume while keeping their two thirds ( 2/3 ) share of the economy booming.

Anyone foolish enough to think that our economy consists only of Wall Street, the Stock Market, and how much money you can stuff into your pockets thereby, is going to end up being a Robber Baron and a Darth Vader to the very essence of American goodness, for it results only greed and greed mongering.

That too is part of what went wrong with the Bush years and his presidency, for he allowed it to happen on his watch, even if not directly involved in it himself. He did nothing to stop it, and indeed, is still doing nothing to stop it, Vis a Vis our southern border and the accompanying (AND CONTINUING) negation of our labor and immigration laws without an act of Congress.

But perhaps the saddest thing associated with this, is the treating of employees, even federal and state employees, as little more than dirt to be swept up and put under the rug to either maximize corporate profits, or hold taxes down in irrelevant and mindless fashion. And if you do not understand why, please reread what I said above about the consumer being TWO THIRDS of the U. S. Economy that Government dare not neglect.... nor Wall Street and their investors lose mind of.

If Thomason could only raise $7 million, Gingrich is only dreaming to get $30 million.

Any idiot would agree to run if given $30 million.

Newt does not do what Newt says he will do. He is a very intelligent man and he has many original and creative ideas. But we must remember that he is the father of Scorched Earth Republicanism. He was the genius behind the Contract with America (whatever happened to term limits anyway). As Speaker of the House during the Clinton years, he used the Impeachment clause of the Constitution - a contingency for the most critical of national emergencies - to paralyze a presidency. Newt himself has no right to look down on any other man's sexual indiscretions - a comment I would make about no other man.

Just remember that you read it first here: do not expect Newt to do what Newt says he will do. Newt does not connect thought and action.

I think that it is a disgrace that a candidate has to raise 30 million dollars to run for the office of president. If we put all the money together that the candidates raise we could pay off the war budget. this is why we cannot get any good people to run for office. You have my vote newt.

Why anyone would ante up a campaign donation for this dinosaur is unfathomable.

The GOP doesn't believe in dinosaurs. They're creationists.

Which is why they're about to become extinct.

Mark - Lousiville KY,

You wrote, "OMG! You people need to go back a few years and revisit what an IDIOT this person really is. I guess if Hitler were still alive, he'd have as good of a shot at the Whitehouse as old Newt does….."

Actually Mark, Hitler could not run for the Presidency. Only individuals born in the US (or a US Territory) are eligible. Aaanold (Ca) - not eligible.
If Hitler WERE running for office, seems the Party most open to his candidacy would be Democrats - considering they don't really mind Robert Byrd (former klu klux klan member) is one of their highly respected Senators.

Just thought you might want to have the facts while you're deriding Newt.

Newt, you used to work hard for Georgia's people, and then you got all these delusions of grandeur. A man of your intelligence should be supporting the whole USA, not advancing one party over another. You're easily smart enough to be president, but you'd like to rule instead of govern us.

Calling Newt smart is really self-defeating to the right-wingers as it shows how much less intelligent they are than the majority of Americans. He still has that biological defect that dooms any agenda he might propose, whether that agenda is correct or not.Proof of functioning brain matter is more important than political stance.People with normal brains(liberal) can learn and evolve, conservatives are rigid and cannot.Do we want an ideologue or a thinker?

Steve Schoner of AZ - exactly who are we supposed to be declaring war against? Your response is typical of a red state rethuglican who's education is so lacking you don't know what you are talking about...which makes it scary that there are peopel like you out there who'll vote for someone like Gingrich.

Gringrich is nothing more than a pompous a**. He sees an opportunity in a very weak race to become relavent again. Ask him about his scewing around on his wife, his moral values. He's no better than the rest of them and that's the problem. It's not about what's right anymore it's about big businesses' money.......

Campaigns should be capped at $1000 like a gameshow competition. Just imagine all of the creative solutions. I can think of a hell of a lot better uses for $30m. But to those who put some money in the kettle I guess the saying about a fool and his money is completely accurate. The amount of money spent on dead-end politics in this country is disgusting.

You people that think Newt would be a good candidate are ridiculous. You keep citing his stand on issues. The problem is you think those softballs that the FOX news reporters lay up for him are home runs. A child could hit those out of the park. Remember when he started the nasty attack party on Democrats in the 1990s? Bi-partisan are you kidding me? This guy is scary because people may actually vote for him. Anyone with any common sense would know better.

It would be great if Newt would run. If you've listened to him speak on issues, you'll see he has a thorough knowledge of the subject and provides logical solutions to the problem. Now that's something the Libs are unable to understand...logic and solutions...they'd rather shout some bumper-sticker slogan and talk in generalities.

But, I'm afraid Newt might have a little too much baggage to succeed in an election. When the Republicans when the election (they will), Newt would be a great adviser to them on issues.

It is a about time that he has decided to take this first step toward the presidency. He is the only candidate that sees the so called War on Terror for what it really is... WWIII. After the next attack, which will come, he will be the only one that has the guts to go to the joint sessions of Congress and declare war as did President Roosevelt after Pearl Harbor. Bush should have done that right after 9/11, but failed. And here we are today, divided looking for a leader. Gingrich should choose McCain as his running mate. Let's win this war and make our country great again.

Newt got us in this mess by suggesting the Hitlerian tactic of attacking the legitimacy of the two-party system, and now we have a one-party soviet which has imposed an appointed president and has us fighting a losing war on two fronts. I believe he's dangerously delusional.

Newt Gingrich will tell you more truth in two minutes about the world, the government and so on, than you would get in listening to fifty (ho-hum) Democratic 'debates.'

He also understands the true nature of the threat we face from Islamo-barbarianism.

That in and of itself, qualifies him to run for president.

The reality is Newt Gingrich is a very talented politician and a true student of history so for politicos he will be perhaps the most “exciting” republican candidate for 2008. His political and personal gaffs in the past may haunt him throughout the race, yet he personally led the House of Representatives back to its most powerful position in forty years by orchestrating the two most productive terms of congress since Sam Rayburn controlled the House in the ‘50s. He is someone whom hard-line republicans trust, moderates can appreciate with the help of some advertising, and southern democrats will get behind when they are faced with the option of either electing a women or a black man into office. When people come to understand that every decision Gingrich has made in his political career has been the result of shrewd calculation, they will also realize that Gingrich’s political machine is already on the move and can only pick up steam as other candidates start to lose their luster come January.

The truth is the issues are more on the DEM side this time around. More GOP and Independent voters will side with affordable health care and the war in Iraq. Hence they

GOP has failed to realize they can't be going after the evangelical vote all the time. Those issues don't favor them anyone because they are not true to those values including Newt. that being said the media has failed to realize why the Major from New is ahead in the GOP polls. The evangelical votes are gone. Evangelicals are true to values not a political party. And the media missed it again, the main reason GOP lost the last election.

They think if Hillary is nominated that will bring them back to the fold. No it will not and that's the mistake they make. They will not side with anyone current in the GOP race even if they don't agree with Hillary.

Bush was able to trade on their intelligence by telling them that Kerry will make gay marriage legal. Know fully well the house was controlled by GOP and such a law will never pass. Kerry was too dumb to explain it to the American public.

The fact that there is ONE Republican who thinks that Newt Gingrich could get his party nomination, much less win in the general, perfectly illustrates why you lost in 2006, and why (absent massive dirty tricks) you will lose again in 2008. Reality. Get to know it.

He said "very bold" proposals are needed to bring the United States government into the 21st century.

"I think, as a general rule, that levees should not break, that bridges should not fall, that students should actually learn," Gingrich said.

WOW, that is bold, bridges should not fall? Yes this man is brilliant. He wants to bring us bold new idea's like his old contract with America under another name.

This man is an idoit. His actions and his comments are of an idiot. The Republicans keep repeating how brilliant he is until they start to believe it. He left office in disgrace and failure. He represents everything that is killing the republican party today. The "empty intitiative", "think outside the box", "bold new Plan" nonsense has been exposed as empty retoric. Newt is the best at empty hypocritical retoric. This country is in a terrible mess from following leaders with empty slogan promises and are not looking for more of the same old tired political "experts".

He said "very bold" proposals are needed to bring theUnited States government into the 21st century."

Very bold proposals indeed!

Like Negotiating Peace not War. Like a Bi-Partisan Democratic versus a Dictatorship Government. Like aspiring to be a Nation of Peace not War. Like protecting and upholding what your Nation stands for. Like protecting your Constituion. Like making decisions based on your people's needs and priorities. Like respecting those who put you in office. Like respecting your International Allies not only when you need their aid but on a continual basis. Like reaching out to all ethnic backgrounds in respect and support. Like Governing for the People by the People with no favourtism or cronyism for the elite, rich or famous.

Yes very bold proposals indeed. But, neither George or Newt or any Republican are up to the challenge.

So many "progressives" come to blog on the internet because they're dying to have their voice heard. Comments are always hilarious.

I'm all for somebody that would bring fiscal responsibility to Washington. Certainly none of the Democrats would do so. Maybe Obama if he was actually successful in ousting special interests groups, but then how would any Democrat get elected?

Pledge me $30 million and I'll run! Either to Tahiti or the Bahamas!
Even if he only side swiped a couple of % for his own expenses, he'd be happy (nice pay check)

Newt is the only one who can hold his own with Hillary in a debate. That's because both of them are policy wonks. Whether you think he's right or wrong (and I think he's wrong), at least a Gingrich-Clinton race would be more about substance than about style (Romney, Guiliani, Obama, Edwards, GWB).

There's too much name-calling (Hitler?) and not enough discussion of real issues. A good percentage of the Contract with America items were passed, and we had serious fiscal discipline during those times. It was not such a good idea to try to shut down the government to try to get what they wanted. Right now, I could see voting for Hillary or Rudy or Newt. I am looking for a progressive who will accept that the government needs to have a role in fixing certain problems, but also a pragmatist who can competently administer. I don't see Newt as someone who's out to force a certain social standard on the country.

The lunatic left really fear someone who is telling it like it is on Immigration, taxes, education, the jihadists deranged ideas to destroy the west...etc...If conservatism means allowing people to control their own personal lives, including requiring enforcement of our existing immigration laws, balancing the budget (only done when he ran the House of Rep. and clinton claimed credit), make clear his positions and not leaving everything open for change as do Hillary, Obama, etc. Hillary has changed her lies so often it is pitiful. The commies on the left really fear this man of principle, me think they protesteth too much. Do we want real leadership or let the others try to focus only on wedge issues of no real importance. Clinton was impeached for LYING to a Federal Judge, Hillary makes over $100K in one day on a $1K investment in cattle futures. Hillary gets over $850K from felon on the run, and openly posed with same crook and hubby calling him their special "friend". He kept his contract with America, while our president had his bagman,Gore, collect the illegal contributions and solicit them right from the white house and vp office. Filth from the left.We now see the Europeans, French/Germans/Italy all aligning with us...the French throwing out the liberals who provided the country with 16%unemployment, riots by illegals for control, etc. just where the Dems are taking us.

Newt has great ideas for our country. Most people have not really taken the time to listen to his ideas or what he has to say. Unfortunately his past will hurt him in an election.

He is probably the only candidate who is smart enough and bold enough to implement fundamental change in the way our government currently operates. Our Government needs to become more efficient and it needs to implement radcial changes to our education system that will work.

I have no confidence in any of the Democratic candidates. Newt is probably the only candidate with enough experience and intellectual capacity to do a really good job of running our Government. Politically he is going to have a lot of difficulty.

You have my support Newt!
