Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani compared the scrutiny of his personal life marked by three marriages to the biblical story of how Jesus dealt with an adulterous woman.

In an interview posted online Friday, Giuliani was questioned about his family and told the Christian Broadcasting Network, "I think there are some people that are very judgmental."

Giuliani has a daughter who indicated support for Democrat Barack Obama and a son who said he didn't speak to his father for some time. Giuliani's messy divorce from their mother, Donna Hanover, was waged publicly while Giuliani was mayor of New York.

"I'm guided very, very often about, `Don't judge others, lest you be judged,"' Giuliani told CBN interviewer David Brody. "I'm guided a lot by the story of the woman that was going to be stoned, and Jesus put the stones down and said, 'He that hasn't sinned, cast the first stone,' and everybody disappeared.

"It seems like nowadays in America, we have people that think they could've passed that test," he said. "And I don't think anybody could've passed that test but Jesus."

In the New Testament story, related in the Gospel of John, Jesus does not actually hold stones. The Pharisees bring Jesus a woman charged with adultery, reminding him the punishment for adultery is stoning. They are testing Jesus in an effort to charge him with breaking the law.

The Gospel reads: "But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, 'Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.'

"… And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders."

Giuliani has insisted his family relationships are private. In 1968, he married his cousin, Regina Peruggi. They divorced 14 years later, and Giuliani obtained an annulment from the Catholic Church on the grounds that as second cousins, they should have received a dispensation to marry.

Giuliani married Hanover in 1984 and they divorced in 2002. He has been married to Judith Nathan since 2003.

Likewise, he says his faith is private, although he evokes his Catholic upbringing on the campaign trail.

He told CBN he believes in God and prays to Jesus for guidance and help.

"I have very, very strong views on religion that come about from having wanted to be a priest when I was younger, having studied theology for four years in college," he said. "It's an area I know really, really well academically.

"… And my personal view of it is I need God's help for everything, and I probably feel that the most when I'm in crisis and under pressure, like Sept. 11, when I was dealing with prostate cancer, or (when) I'm trying to explain death to people, which unfortunately I've had to do so often.

"So it's a very, very important part of my life," he said. "But I think in a democracy and in a government like ours, my religion is my way of looking at God, and other people have other ways of doing it, and some people don't believe in God. I think that's unfortunate. I think their life would be a lot fuller if they did, but they have that right."

Giuliani also addressed a cell phone call he took from his wife, Judith, last week during his speech to the National Rifle Association, an important appearance because Giuliani clashed with the group when he argued for tougher gun control as mayor of New York.

"And quite honestly, since Sept. 11, most of the time when we get on a plane, we talk to each other and just reaffirm the fact that we love each other," he said.

"Sometimes if I'm in the middle of a very, very sensitive meeting, I don't take the call right then; I wait. But I thought it would be kind of nice if I took it at that point, and I'd done that before in engagements, and I didn't realize it would create any kind of controversy," he said.

If we start analyzing people's relationships with their parents, we'd all be guilty of being somewhat dysfuntional, wouldn't we?

Dave Malone - Red Springs, KY   September 28th, 2007 1:02 pm ET

This from a man who rarely goes to church. I don't even know why issues such as these are important for voters. Bill Clinton was/is a womanizing governor, who made many semi-legal backroom deals with questionable characters. George W. Bush was/is a coke-snorting, drunk-driving, partying governor, who may or may not have fathered a child out of wedlock.

Voters don't care about character and integrity, nor should they. The only quality that matters in the end, is leadership.

Corbett, Seattle WA   September 28th, 2007 1:05 pm ET

Unfortunately, this analogy does not apply to Giuliani, because he's been tossing stones, mud, daggers and pipe-bombs for months now.

Chris, Columbus OH   September 28th, 2007 1:06 pm ET

He makes me want to vomit.

Dave Malone - Red Springs, KY   September 28th, 2007 1:09 pm ET

Thanks for censoring my post, CNN. Sorry I was being too even-handed and not bashing the GOP guy enough (or kissing the butt of the Democrat)…

BP, Cola SC   September 28th, 2007 1:13 pm ET

Way to hide behind the bible, Rudy.

Greg Dallas, TX   September 28th, 2007 1:17 pm ET

Is it really possible the Republicans could nominate this idiot?

Anonymous   September 28th, 2007 1:20 pm ET

Keep Jesus talk out of politics!

Tricia M Charlottetown PEI   September 28th, 2007 1:27 pm ET

Mr. Giuliani please don't insult us by insinuating we're gullible enough to believe your fantasy stories and excuses for your unprofessional behaviour!

If your Catholic upbringing is such an important part of your life and your so versed in Theology, you would know that the prime Catholic teaching is to follow the example of Jesus. Few Catholics unfortunately make the grade on that one. Not even some of their ordained priests! And you in my view are not one of the few.

Your three marriages, strained relationship with your children and your view of keeping military force on the table to deal with Iran, is not what my Catholic teaching and upbringing would deem as following the path of Jesus!

Moreover, your ingenious statements to put it mildly about your telephone conversations with your wife at public speaking events, and other more politically serious issues is well, just laughable at best! As the saying goes, "who your friends are says alot about your character." You should give that old cliche more of your attention.

Rudy, you are a Chamelion in sheep's clothing. And if you think your fooling anyone your the fool. I'm from Canada and even I can see right through you. Your as transparent as glass. You don't even have a truthful aura about you!

Will M, New York, NY   September 28th, 2007 1:33 pm ET

What a hypocrite! What was Giuliani's former job? Prosecutor. He judged people all the time and never gave forgiveness. What a phony just like that planted phone call with his mistress wife.

Aaron, Sterling VA   September 28th, 2007 1:33 pm ET

Seriously? The man who's had multiple marriages and has made a fortune from the tragedy of 9/11 is trying to get biblical? Gimme a break.

Patsy Madison, TN   September 28th, 2007 1:35 pm ET

Rudy,
The problem that you have is the way that you treated Donna and the children. Did you have to parade your present wife under her nose and belittle her in public? Unforgetable!

Dave, Atlanta, GA   September 28th, 2007 1:36 pm ET

Usually when you hear this particular story in the political arena, it is being used to criticise republicans who want to argue that a particular politician should be removed from office because of their morals. So it's interesting to hear the story being told by a republcan candidate

Sam, Newport News Virginia   September 28th, 2007 1:37 pm ET

Giuliani does not get it. How can you run for public office with ex-wives, wives, children and all sorts of other things in disarray?!!! If you’re immediate family who knows you better than America does not associate themselves with you then why should the voters. People pick the most convenient parts of the Bible but cannot follow 1 of the 10 Commandments!! I'm liberal and can understand 1 ex-wife but THREE!?!?!?!??
He is not a reflection of anyone who I know, so no vote here. He should be in counseling. He definitely has a "Me" problem. Everyone can't wrong. I couldn't imagine my son feeling this way towards me. If it quacks like a duck, it usually is. The country has enough problems; Giuliani has too many issues of his own. Deadbeat Dad for President.

M. Winners, Mesa, AZ   September 28th, 2007 1:40 pm ET

Atta Boy Rudy! It's about time someone in politics these days has the spine to point out to the neocon christianists that using scriptures to propel their political agenda can also be used against them…

RB, from the bay state   September 28th, 2007 1:40 pm ET

Ru911dy, you're getting stranger and stranger every day.

What's with Giu911iani lately?

Marcia Van Lenten   September 28th, 2007 1:41 pm ET

It's not a matter of judging Mr. Giuliani, it's making a decision to trust a man that lies to his first two wives and children about affairs.

If Mr. Giuliani doesn't want the heat stay out of the kitchen.

Can we trust him not to lie to the American people?

Pat Balke Scotch Plains, NJ   September 28th, 2007 1:42 pm ET

Judge not lest you be judged-this would be a lot more believable coming from Mr Giuliani if he practiced what he preached. Do me a favor Mr Former Mayor and stop the fake pontificating.

S Meyer Brooklyn NY   September 28th, 2007 1:43 pm ET

Giuliani can say anything he wants but its not only the fact of the three marriages but how he dealt with them. It was common knowledge he was having an affair when he was Mayor. But he had the gaul to tell the world he was getting a divorce before telling his wife. He airs his duty laundry in the press and then he decries the press for commenting on it. His hypocrisy has no bounds. He will make an absolutely terrible president, if we are so unlucky for him to be elected because he doesn't listen well to the public only those who share his views

George,Union City ,Georgia   September 28th, 2007 1:44 pm ET

Evangelical Christians leaders of the Republican Party are nothing more than hypocrites. They do not live by the Biblical injunctions concerning marriages and divorces. The Bible clearly states when a divorce is allowable:only in cases of adultery and one must remain single for life. They hate Mrs Clinton for staying with her husband despite his public adultery whereas they continue to embrace a serial adulterer like Giuliani.Truly in that day of judgment ,God will say to the so called leaders "I know ye not".Shame is the name of some of these Christian leaders

Providence, RI   September 28th, 2007 1:47 pm ET

Rudy is a war monger, fear monger, and fake. Rudy is the "most uninformed candidate" in foregin policy (Biden). Rudy pretends to be Presidential, family person but he is not. He looks like more mayoral than Presidential. Rudy lacks character and principles to be the President of the United State. Please do not consider Rudy-it will be a disaster…Rudy exploits 911 over and over and over. Rudy is not conservative- his family do not like him. Now, Rudy is using Bible to compare himself to Jesus… sad, very sad…

Dane, Columbus, OH   September 28th, 2007 1:48 pm ET

Hmmm… It seems Giuliani cast a whole arsenal of stones at the democratic candidates over the MoveOn.org ad in the NY Times.

Doug, GA   September 28th, 2007 1:56 pm ET

Some things in life cannot be controlled and among those things are spouses and kids. Regardless of the politics a candidate should not be judged on family matters unless major in-discretions have been conmmitted by the candidate.

Chip, Reno NV   September 28th, 2007 1:57 pm ET

oh, pullleeeeez! What a joke! No matter how one may judge his political positions, this guy is a slimeball on the personal level. His former families knows that.

ronnie - knoxville, tn.   September 28th, 2007 1:58 pm ET

i don't think many people can comment on this story . liberals don't know what "New Testament " is

Pat, Huntington, NY   September 28th, 2007 2:00 pm ET

You've gotta be kidding me with this! The republican party has proven that it is nothing but a bunch of self-righteous bible beating judgmental hypocrits! Rudy, if you truly believe what you say, you're in the wrong party…"come to the light" Rudy, i.e. the democrat party, "there is peace and salvation in the light!"

Brendose, Oceanside CA   September 28th, 2007 2:00 pm ET

I swear, Rudy cannot have an interview without saying 9/11!! And now he is comparing his adultry and failed marriages to Jesus? WOW! This guy is crazy! Go on, vote for Rudy!! He will be a good person for the Democrats to crush in the election!

therealist   September 28th, 2007 2:01 pm ET

Ahhh, but you see Rudy. These are liberals, they don't believe in sin or Jesus and would gleefully spit in his face given the opportunity. Just as they continue to do to our soldiers.

Dr Geek, Asheville NC   September 28th, 2007 2:02 pm ET

There he goes, pandering to the Bible Thumpers…

Sherry AllOver Texas   September 28th, 2007 2:04 pm ET

Pandering to the Religious Right are we Rudy? Quoting scripture-HA! "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"? No, no that dog just doesn't hunt. Where were you when Bill Clinton was being persecuted for having an extramarital affair, huh?

The rules of the game are just great when they benefit Republicans, but the second a Republican is expected to follow the same set of rules they conveniently want them changed. Well guess what…NO!!! When you are running for POTUS anything and everything you've ever done will be scrutinized, PERIOD. Get over it. You should have thought about the consequences of your actions well before now.

This just in… Republicans are now expected to follow the same set of rules they preach to Democrats… Pass It On!

Ayveel, Dallas, TX   September 28th, 2007 2:05 pm ET

Rudy I understand your frustration. But you know from past experience that your whole life goes under public perception when you run for public office. You are talking about running for President of The United States of America.

Everything from your faith to what shoe size you wear will be asked or inquired upon. People will want to know what influences your stance on issues.

Is it your faith? Is it a Marxist theory? Is it liberal advocate groups? People want to know.

Your private life does matter. The biggest mistake a person makes is to think that what you consider private does not matter to the public when in fact what happens in your so-called private life has a great influence on your public stance.

Take Dick Cheney for example. He has a lesbian daughter. From what I remember, Cheney doesn't talk about homosexual marriage or gay rights at all like his Republican peers. Could it be that his private life has affected the Republican stance? Yeah.

Your private life means a lot to people. I will say that everyone makes mistakes, even more than twice. Public commentary isn't judgement, it is stating factual information. Why would your own daughter not support you for president?

Rob, Lake Tahoe, NV   September 28th, 2007 2:06 pm ET

Kudos to Rudy! I'm so tired of self-righteous, so-called "Christians" judging everyone and worming their way into politics for the sole reason of undermining the principles and values upon which this country was founded.

After decades of nasty, mean-spirited "Christians" leading the charge on the Republican side, I'm so happy to finally see a candidate (on the Republican side) with common sense emerge (Ron Paul too, but he, sadly, has no chance of winning). Rudy recognizes that religion is a private matter and that, while it can be a source of great strength for the individual, it has no place in public life. Freedom OF religion also means freedom FROM religion.

I've voted Democrat in every election since I turned 18. While I generally disagree with Big Government thinking, it is the lesser of evils compared to refashioning this country as a Theocracy. If Rudy wins the nomination, I might very well vote Republican for the first time in my life. He's experienced, fiercely intelligent, and flawed. In other words, HUMAN. And he's not riding into the election on some moral high horse. It's about time!

James, New Jersey   September 28th, 2007 2:07 pm ET

Giuliani's either very confused about Christianity and God's law, or he isn't confused and is lying.

Christ told the woman at the well, because she was repentant, that she was forgiven - and that she should sin no more.

Giuliani is a poster boy for: serial divorce, meanness to his own, cross-dressing and making a mockery of Christian sexual morality, homosexuality and sexual perversion, etc. etc.

He's never, that I've ever seen, shown the least bit of repentance for any of that.

And he's confused about judgment. Christians (and common sense people) judge acts and thoughts for the good and evil they are. However, Christian are not to judge the whole person, for that will be left to Christ and will depend on the condition of the person's soul when he dies.

Giuliani's behavior has been decadent, unfaithful, gross, shocking, indecent and exactly what most Christians don't ever want to have their children exposed to or made a model of.

James

Scott, Tampa FL   September 28th, 2007 2:10 pm ET

According to the bible everyone is a sinner, so therefore, no one should be able to ever judge anyone, as Mr Juliani suggests. Therefore, no one is able to uphold standards/morals in which we can live by…ie, anything goes.

Lela, Bowie, Maryland   September 28th, 2007 2:15 pm ET

I think this is nothing but bullcrap…he's just as immoral as Bill Clinton. He's just starting early with his spin!

Ed,Ellenville,New York   September 28th, 2007 2:21 pm ET

Good move Rudy, those idiots at CBN didn't even know that you insulted their viewers. Now put those "ditto-heads" where they belong.Seperate out the theocrats and marginalize them so America can deal with real issues.

Chris M. in Boston, MA   September 28th, 2007 2:24 pm ET

I'm glad he finally said this. All the lefty bloggers who have indicted him for his personal life are all too willing to throw the stones. It's very annoying and arrogant.

How many of the people who have condemned Rudy for his personal life have never had any family quarrels? How many of them have agreed 100% with their parents' political views? How many times have any of them managed to lead the #1 crime-capital city in America into a golden age or safety and fiscal responsibility?

Anyone who could make a claim to all of these points can cast the first stone. Otherwise, they should feel free to disagree with Rudy's policies and tactics, but unless they want to be branded as hypocrites, they should put the stones down.

Well said, Rudy!

Stephen, Sleepy Hollow, NY   September 28th, 2007 2:25 pm ET

Mr. Giuliani is very smart and savvy. He's no religious scholar, certainly. He's hurting himself by continuing to hearken back to 9/11, no matter what his pollster tells him. He's turning himself into a one-trick pony, and that's certain death for a candidate. He knows he has to give a nod to the Christian right, but that's tricky in light of (a) his Catholicism; and (b) his record supporting pro-choice and pro-gay rights. Rudy would be happiest if the right stayed home on primary days - just don't mobilize against him and don't consolidate behind Fred Thompson. Giuliani strikes me as a frightening sort of politician, one who seems to be interested in power for its own sake, and one who doesn't take counsel well, other than from himself. Under Giuliani, the U.S. would be expected to pursue an increasingly militaristic foreign policy, and a domestic policy that pays extensive lip service to "law and order" while ignoring the concerns of the less fortunate. It's a recipe for disaster, for steepening the decline of the Bush years, and I urge all Americans to look in another direction for their next President.

spraynardkruger   September 28th, 2007 2:27 pm ET

What a phony! He seems to have forgotten another passage "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is an abomination".

Dr Atomic   September 28th, 2007 2:28 pm ET

Judged not, lest ye be judged instead? But I could throw a whole rockpile at Rudy. Not everyone has a black heart and a closet full of skeletons, Mister Politician.

. . . and he mentions 9-11 twice.

J.W.Engberg, Roy, Utah   September 28th, 2007 2:30 pm ET

I surely do like Rudy Giuliani! He sounds so sane and sensible - and what a good speaker. I haven't heard him speak much but did hear some of his speech at the National Rifle Association.

Diane W, Linglestown Pa   September 28th, 2007 2:31 pm ET

I agree with what Giuliani said. I also need God, all the time not just when times are bad. I also take calls from my husband, that I love very much all the time as well, no matter what I am doing-life is too short. If anyone of us would run for president, the media could "twist" anything in our past to make it look ugly..that's what they like to print and report!

Kim Morris, Meriden CT   September 28th, 2007 2:31 pm ET

Didn't he forget the part where after Jesus sent away the stone-throwers he told the woman to "Go, and sin no more"?

Joe Corrao, Brooklyn, NY   September 28th, 2007 2:38 pm ET

BTW does everyone realize there is NO god…

Newark, NJ   September 28th, 2007 2:38 pm ET

The very idea of using Jesus in defending his bad family values is enough to disqualify him.

In fact, the very mention of Jesus is enough to dismiss any public official.

Marcia Van Lenten, Shohola,PA   September 28th, 2007 2:43 pm ET

It's not a matter of judging Mr. Giuliani, its just making a decision if we can trust a man who has lied to his past wives and children about affairs.
Mr. Giuliani decided to get into this race, if he can't take the heat he needs to get out of the kitchen.

Rudy my boy, your secrets are now out and open for our perusal. We Need to learn if you can be trusted!
Let's have some poll standings from the people of NYC, NYPD,NYFD and others and see what they think of Mr. Giuliani. He can't just ride into the White House for his TV image on 9/11. Let's have some viewpoints from the average NYC citizens.

David H, San Diego, CA   September 28th, 2007 2:43 pm ET

This is funny coming from a man whom is asking for the ticket of presidential nomination from a party known around the world as an intolerant one.

Ft Lauderdale   September 28th, 2007 2:45 pm ET

Very true… I wonder whatever happen to forgiveness. Everyone is so quick to judge and condemn the next person. Whatever happened to forgiveness? Why are we so quick to want the worst for your neighbor? I mean if its like that how can we ever expect God to do good towards us? If we cant even get along with the person that we can see, feel and talk to. Im not a Rudy Giuliani fan but im definitely a forgiving fan.

Bradley Olsen Estell Manor, NJ   September 28th, 2007 2:47 pm ET

Rudy is a typical slimeball chickenhawk. It seems his children have him pegged. Remember, he spent as much time at ground zero as the first responders. Ha Ha! He should go look for another cousinto marry.

Michael Miami, Fl   September 28th, 2007 2:49 pm ET

All I need to know about the man is that his children don't like him.

Wynter, Loudon, NH   September 28th, 2007 2:56 pm ET

Ah yes. Let's keep everything private. All the personal mistakes that give away his faults and failures both morally and intellectual. Let's just ignore all that for someone vying for the highest office in the land. NOT!!!!

Telling it like I see it,

Fred   September 28th, 2007 2:57 pm ET

Rudy has gone round the bend. Time to go home. He's laughable. Using the bible to defend his life style! Get real. Yes people are judgemental. Try giving us less ammo!

Kate, Aurora CO   September 28th, 2007 3:00 pm ET

Wow. I'm shocked. Yet again Rudy mentions 9-11 at least two times when asked a question. Someone should tell Rudy the party he represents are those same very people that pass judgment and throw stones. Also tell him to stop riding his campaign on the backs of the truly innocent victims of 9-11 and get a new political platform.

Scott from Freehold   September 28th, 2007 3:06 pm ET

Giuliani had become so disgustingly disingenuous as to be sickening. Between his addictive references to 9-11, his wife's phone call, the false conservatism and cowtowing to the NRA, and now referencing the bible, he has become a caricature. Elected Giuliani will be the worst of Bush and more.

Ed,Ellenville,New York   September 28th, 2007 3:06 pm ET

Pat,Huntington,Rudy's doing a great job of ridding the republicans of their judgementalist theocratic fascists. That's a service to our nation. We don't need him in the democratic party,we need him right there.Rip the rest of them all you want, but as a democrat you should as I do recognize his value to all of us and encourage him to stand strong against his right-wing detractors. They are our nation's biggest problem,an enemy of our enemy is our friend.Rudy is helping us and for that I will thank him.Go Rudy!

Steve   September 28th, 2007 3:07 pm ET

Separation of church and state applies as much to the electoral process as it does to the day-to-day business of government. Only in America are politicians put through the grinder of public scrutiny in some faint hope that a "Jesus" figure will emerge to lead this forlorn country into the "promised land." Let lying (whether verbally or physically) dogs lie and get on with the task of straightening out the damage that has been done to the country in the last 40 years of "power" politics.

David B., Sterling Virginia   September 28th, 2007 3:08 pm ET

There's nothing biblical or righteous about that.

AKR, NYC, NY   September 28th, 2007 3:13 pm ET

Amazing how people fall for this guy. I lived in NYC while he was mayor. And each time this creep mentions "911″, I want people who are charmed by him to know, that in 1996 (3 years after the 1993 WTC bombing) insisted that the Emergency Response Center remain in the WTC, rebuking many who advised against it. Also, a lot of firefighters and rescue workers died on 9/11 due to the breakdown in communications between teh police and fire departments, again under his command.

Steve, New York   September 28th, 2007 3:16 pm ET

The book is called The Holy Bible and the first letters of those three words should be capital letters. Obviously the book, The Bible, means little to you.

A. Thomas, New York, NY   September 28th, 2007 3:27 pm ET

Giuliani is not a good thinker. To me, he is morally bankrupt, other than being an inexperinced national and international politician.

The fact is that he is running to be the next president and wants our votes based on what he has accomplished professionally. For voters, other than judging his professional accomplishments, if any, we need to find out if his personal values, which may guide what he will do for the country, are shared by us.

As voters, we have the right to judge and citicize. If he can't stand the heat, he should get out of the kitchen.

Many of us have not married 3 times, and upset our ex-wives or kids, and therefore are not faulted like him.

A chinse proverb says one cannot manage well his family affairs is in no position to manage the country.

Ryan, Provo, UT   September 28th, 2007 3:30 pm ET

"Voters don't care about character and integrity, nor should they. The only quality that matters in the end, is leadership."

Are you serious Dave? Character is debatable because its hard to define but Integrity? Certainly we should care about honesty and forthrightness should we not? It's Bush's dishonesty and backdoor dealings that have gotten us into so much trouble the last six years.

No, voters certainly should care about integrity. While I'm fine with Rudy's divorces, its the way he treated his wives and children that demonstrates that he's someone who can't be trusted, and while it may be true that only God can judge his soul, I definitely have the right to say I wouldn't want him as my president because of it.

Charles, Washington, D.C.   September 28th, 2007 3:49 pm ET

(Gasp) It was probably bound to happen sooner or later that a man who supports abortion and gay marriage would hide behind the Bible in the midst of reasonable attacks on his shady character.

Oh, and Rudy….that scripture was intended to highlight that none of us are perfect and to show unlimited grace towards those who make an effort to be better Christians…to date, you have not tried. If you had started following the Word (as you so implied in these recent statements) awhile back, there would be a noticeable change in your character, not to mention people's perception of your leadership skills.

I admire your leadership on 9/11..you really stepped up to the plate…but standing up for a few days is not the same as standing up for the entire time people have placed faith in you as their leader, which you clearly failed to do.

I have faith in your potential to turn these things around because if your desire is to truly follow God, you will submit your will to Him, you will find success in His plan for you.

James Katzenburg, Richmond, VA   September 28th, 2007 3:57 pm ET

Rudy quoting New Testament from the Bible is like Larry Craig admitting that he is gay and allowing same sex marriage or Sen Vitter proposing a bill to legalize "personal services" by DC madam.

One's personal life is just as important as his or her public accomplishments to a people who stand to be governed by the person in question.

Rudy, I have not judged your soul … I just think that if you can't keep a marriage together and you can't facilitate positive (or any) relationships with you own children, it may not be a good idea for you to govern any country - let alone the US.

Bart, San Diego, CA   September 28th, 2007 4:14 pm ET

Another Bible story butchered with the horrible christianized translation. Sorry to disappoint you Rudy, but the Jewish heads in this story (including Yeshua) were not blood-thirsty rock hurlers. In fact their view and thoughts were that if one person per 70 years had to be slain under them, then it was concieved as bloody and a terrible thing. Fact of the matter is, they were always looking for loopholes within their Torah (God given or man made) to save a human life, and they came to AND included the rabbi Yeshua to help them thru that loophole. Trust me, if they were going to stone the girl because that's what they did and loved to do, then they would have. Too bad this world has taken Yeshua, stripped him of his Jewishness, and replaced him with worldly pagen comforts, all the while stapling the Jews to a way of nonsense.

Ed, Tallahassee FL   September 28th, 2007 4:24 pm ET

Didn't he once close an entire museum over 1 piece of art work he found offensive?

Sounds a little judgmental to me.

James, New Jersey   September 28th, 2007 4:29 pm ET

Sometimes I can't believe what I read from my fellow Americans.

First, there is no separation of church and state. A president (or any other American) can mention Jesus anytime he wants, as ALL past American presidents have. Those who believe in Christian morality have a strong base of support from Americans who believe in Christian morality (which is given to us by God for our own good).

Second, OF COURSE people care about integrity in their president! Any man who is an adulterer and tells his wife he's going to divorce her on the primetime news, and who supports murdering fully-formed babies (partial birth abortion), and who wants to legitimze sodomy and so on - isn't what a whole lotta Americans want for the man who leads our country and sets an example for our children.

And then, finally, all this stuff about Christians being 'fascists' and so on. What a bunch of bunk. You all can lead your lives any way you want! Just don't expect everyone else to think it's good or something that people want promoted to their children.

People have the right to believe whatever they want about moral and religious matters, and to vote for those who stand up for the morality they believe in.

James

Is it really possible that the Republicans could nominate this bozo and the Democrats could nominate Hillary as their bozo? Anyway to start all over and elect different people? What a disgrace!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   September 28th, 2007 4:38 pm ET

Unfortunately, Giuliani hasn't read the whole scripture/bible from which he quotes or he is misinterpreting it to fit him. But that's okay, he also has freedom of speech and I won't vote for him or anyone else who may attempt to take away my rights. GWB and Cheney with the help of Mr. Rove did a damn good job in their attempt.

Rafi Mittlefehldt, New York, NY   September 28th, 2007 4:47 pm ET

If I were a reporter interviewing him, just for fun I'd try coming up with questions as unrelated to Sept. 11 as I possibly could, just to see how he would bring it up on his own.

G - San Francisco, CA   September 28th, 2007 4:49 pm ET

Giuliani is dumber than I thought. Not only that, he is a sick bastard. We may all be sinners but some of us have sinned much more than others, especially Giuliani with 3 marriages - including one to his cousin! God help anyone who votes for him. (no pun intended)

LR, SE Pa   September 28th, 2007 5:43 pm ET

Rudy, you're a disgrace!

Jim Cleveland ohio   September 28th, 2007 5:53 pm ET

This is a Man who was nothing before 911. I lsiten to him during the debates. The man only knows 1 word I, he did everything??

He took a horrible tragedy and turned it into fame. The man would have never have run for President if it was not for 911. His EGO is out of control .

We have enough egos up for President. We are 50 trillion in debt, a war that will never end, 50 trillion in total debt and we are paying for these candidates with our money. How stupid is that?.

The only candidate that does not use our money is Ron Paul and this man "Rudy"laughs at him. The Man that never read the 911 commission report and show disrespect to all candidates. His Ego will get us in worse trouble than we are in today.

Garrett Indianapolis, IN   September 28th, 2007 6:06 pm ET

He married his first cousin, his son is estranged, and his daughter is voting for Obama. Rudy is not a fake, he's a fraud and he's not fit to lead our country. Oh, and he failed NYC on 9/11 but how easily and quickly we forget that…

Elena Bush, San Antonio, TX   September 28th, 2007 6:07 pm ET

Oalala Rudy - that is just a perfidious remark quoting the BIBLE to cover up your tracherous matters. Please spare the Bible for finding the TRUTH and don't politicize the Holy Scripture.

Heather, Scotch Plains NJ   September 28th, 2007 7:48 pm ET

Hey Giuliani…Did you not just recently judge Hillary and all the Democrats about the MoveOn.org ad? Seemed like you were throwing an awful lot of stones Rudy. Maybe before you make these statements about not judging others you should double check what you said the week before. This man is a joke!

al, San Francisco, CA   September 28th, 2007 8:13 pm ET

This joker is the leader of the republican nomination polls! They are scrapping the bottom of a barrel.

I hope he will win the nomination, and bring the whole republican down the toilet in the next election.

Debi, Philadelphia, Pa   September 28th, 2007 8:25 pm ET

I have issues with a person that has no relationship with their children. I know that kids and their parents go through things, but love eventually conquers all. That doesn't seem to be the case here. If he can write off ex-wives, children, what will he do to America. He needs to put his house in order. As for 9-11, he stood at a podium and took credit for what was being done as told to him by the people who actually saw the immeadiate needs, put the appropriate people in place to handle those needs. And the phone calls from the wife while he speaks publicly, that turned my stomach, so so fake. Seems to me he has little to no family values and I certainly don't want him as the Leader of the Free World.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   September 28th, 2007 11:47 pm ET

I've heard all I need to hear about his personal life and it makes me sick. He needs to be ranked right along with Warren Jeffs. Marrying his cousin, that's disgusting. Why would any woman want to marry him knowing he slep with and married his cousin. Totally disgusting and my instincts about him were right and further he has the balls to try and quote the bible. Sick

CLARE tampa florida   September 29th, 2007 1:23 am ET

Hey Rudy, if you are such a scholar on religion and you wanted to be a priest, explain to me how you can be "PRO CHOICE"? If you loved the LORD as you proclaim, and are a true christian, you wouldn't turn your back on the millions of innocent baby's being slaughtered every single day. Go ahead and pick and choose scriptures that you think pertain to your hypocritical life, You are far from Holy! As far as throwing stones, you sure don't mind throwing boulders at Ron Paul. Your true colors have certainly shined through! RON PAUL 2008!!!! In case you forgot some of your lessons while studying to be a priest, let me remind you of one commandment in particular " THOU SHALL NOT KILL" I think that does pertain to abortions also!!!!!!

clare tampa fl   September 29th, 2007 1:28 am ET

By the way incest is forbidden in the Bible also, "YOU MARRIED YOUR COUSIN!!!!" Shame on you

Lee, Mays Landing NJ   September 29th, 2007 2:48 am ET

Rudy Guiliani is vomit material. The man has no shame whatsoever, so I guess he makes the perfect republican nominee.
The way he uses 9-11 is sickening enough but this takes the cake.

Tim, Orlando, FL   September 29th, 2007 4:05 am ET

I love how Giuliani manages to sneak two 9/11 references into this story. Yet he ignores the report of the 9/11 Commission and wants to continue and intensify the policies which led (according to that commission and to intelligence experts) to lead to tragedies like 9/11 in the first place. Grandstanding and attacking Ron Paul when Dr. Paul wants to follow expert recommendations.

Rudy Giuliani is a joke.

Andrew Walzer, Blauvelt New York   September 29th, 2007 4:21 am ET

Giuliani was one of the best Mayors New York ever had because he got tough with Welfare Cheats, threw hundreds of thousands of them off the Government Dole by requiring them to show up for some work (even cleaning a park) and by investigating their backgrounds and finding that many really had hidden men that fathered and so should have supported the women and children. And Surprise when they had to work to support themselves and their families, Crime also went down alot. People that have to work during the day to help support their families, don't have energy to hang out on street corners selling drugs or other crimes at night.

Say what you will about Giuliani questioning his "record", but fact is both Crime and Welfare went down more under his administration than any other Mayor of New York.

A. Thomas, New York, NY   September 29th, 2007 8:48 am ET

Giuliani & other republican candidates pride themselves as conservatives & upholding family values. However, contrary to the dem candidates, many of these candidates have had multiple marriages.

What a bunch of hyprocrites.

A. Thomas, New York, NY   September 29th, 2007 9:11 am ET

Giuliani married 3 times including one with his cousin. And, in each prior marriage, he had an affair with another woman while married. And, he is not on talking terms with his children of prior marriages.

What a disfunctional family, bad role model and image for a leader of free world.

Is he what america want as president? If he gets elected, america will become the laughing stock of people in other countries.

shannon, NYC   September 29th, 2007 9:26 am ET

Rudy cleaned up NY and he can clean up the US. He pulls out all stops to get the job done.

Greta, Tampa FL   September 29th, 2007 9:29 am ET

"Voters don't care about character and integrity, nor should they. The only quality that matters in the end, is leadership."

Oh how wrong you are. It is the first thing I look at and would cross party lines if I had to.

christian, selden, ny   September 29th, 2007 9:30 am ET

Rob, Lake Tahoe, NV

I truly believe your post is fake. it was done by rudy himself. because there is no way that somebody that voted democrat their whole life would vote republican if RUDY was running. the guy is out of his mind. did anybody see his FAKE cellphone call at his NRA speech??? why in the world wouldnt he turn his cellphone off when he is making his speech and if it rang WHY WOULD HE EVEN ANSWER IT>! and it just happened to be his wife!? and he sits there having a conversation with her during his speech…like it couldnt wait until after because he just respects his wife SOOOOO MUCH. lol. it was ridiculous i can picture some political advisor saying "ok im going to call your cell phone and you answer it and pretend your talking to your wife..the NRA will eat it up…itll show your a family man…" YEA THATS WHAT HAPPENED. people actually planned that to improve his image!!!!!!

christian, selden, ny   September 29th, 2007 9:42 am ET

James, New Jersey

there should be a seperation of church and state. to bring god into politics is basically saying you alienate the american public that dont believe what YOU belive. AMERICA IS NOT A CHRISTIAN NATION. and god help us if it ever truly becomes one!!!

The Right’s Field » Rudy Turns Over a New Stone   September 29th, 2007 10:57 am ET

[...] things sequined and fanatical. You can watch the interview here, or read excerpts courtesy of CNN here (note that, in the passages cited, he manages to refer to 9/11 — in unrelated contexts [...]

Brad, Stockton, CA   September 29th, 2007 12:32 pm ET

Do as I say, not as I do. Stay in New York Rudy.

Scott, Ohio   September 29th, 2007 1:31 pm ET

Clearly Rude doesn't have the neocons belief system down pat just yet. It's kind of funny, he's the only Republican running I could even consider voting for but for two things; the more I hear from Rudy the more I beleive he's and idiot and the 2nd - the Republican party doesn't have a chance in hell this time around after Bush. Red states are turning blue and it's a beautiful thing!

Raymond, El Paso TX   September 29th, 2007 2:13 pm ET

Keep talking Rudy, your credibility is now at the same level as Bush. BTW you can also replace the B with an R. You know, the pill-popper?

Debbie, NJ   September 29th, 2007 5:04 pm ET

Wow!! This is great!!…all of you judges of moral conduct just made Rudy's point to a T…I am an evangelical Christian who is an Independent and who is so relieved that there is finally a candidate who makes common sense…keep on "JUDGING" people…that's what you all do best!! I think that there are a LOT of people out there who are scared to death of Rudy…sorry all of you liberals and ultraconservative social hippocrats.. He will win the R nom and the presidency and will bring this country together…finally….and the "middle" in this country will get a voice!!

Debbie, Cinnaminsion NJ   September 29th, 2007 5:51 pm ET

WOW!! You are all making Rudy's point to a T….Here's one Independent evangelical Christian who is sick to death of "liberal" and "conservative" hate speech and can't wait until Rudy takes office in 2009…He will finally give us something that has been desperately missing in the last 6 years…COMMON SENSE!! I suppose that all of you Rudy haters are just scared to death that he will beat whomever you are supporting…and he will…but it's ok….the "before" and "after" Rudy in NYC was astounding..you just could not believe it was the same place…You will all love the results of a Guiliani presidency……no reason to be scared…

Lee, Mays Landing NJ   September 30th, 2007 12:55 am ET

"Wow", Debbie of NJ, if only his own children would be as wildly enthusiastic about this fraud of a man and double post entries using a slightly different name making the same essential post here and in many other threads.
But they are not. Rudy is a fraud and a windbag. Even sleepy Fred Thompson (an empty suit) is better.

anon, San Francisco, CA   September 30th, 2007 9:00 am ET

If people know him well (his ex wives and kids) do not like him, why should people unfamiliar with him, vote for him?

Giuliani can talk, but it can be empty promises, as he promised to love his ex wives on wedding days.

It is ridiculous to see people here saying that personal character and integrity of a candidate doesnt matter, only leadership does. As it seems, these people will vote for leaders like Hitler or Sadam Hussein.

Giuliani is a phoney. He cheated his wives, upset his kids, and personally benefited from security contracts after 9/11. America will be ridiculed by the world if he gets elected.

anon, new york, NY   September 30th, 2007 9:20 am ET

Giuliani says he beleives in God. Giuliani is the guy who has broken many of HIS 10 commandments!

He is a sinner, having character flaws, and with practically no federal and international political experiences. Why should we vote for him again?

Let him get nominated, and he will be easily defeated, or walk away with his tail between his legs, when faced with Hillary.

EE Jones   September 30th, 2007 3:05 pm ET

Is this guy for real? He has led less than a stellar personal life and he compares himself to Jesus! How arrogant can he get? My suggestion - follow Tom Freeman's advice: run as something other than Mr. 9/11. America deserves better.

Ron Nebraska   September 30th, 2007 11:57 pm ET

Rudy Giuliani is absolutely the PERFECT candidate to represent the party that caters to the wealthy and manipulates the ignorant.

Chris, FL   October 1st, 2007 1:58 pm ET

That's funny, your name is Christian and you're anti-christian. haha
