James Denton and Cate Edwards on the campaign trail in Iowa Saturday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Television's "Desperate Housewives" star James Denton lent his celebrity to Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards on Saturday as part of an effort to woo young voters.

Denton, who plays the sexy plumber Mike Delfino on ABC's popular show, joined Edwards' eldest daughter, Cate, on the campaign trail. They met with Edwards' student supporters and signed autographs at a homecoming tailgate party at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Denton, wearing a casual sweater and jeans, drew dozens of revelers — mostly women — from the hot dog-eating, beer drinking and party games taking place in a packed parking lot. He patiently posed as women young to old, and the occasional male, got their picture taken beside the star.

He told reporters that he had supported the former North Carolina senator when Edwards ran for president in 2004 and became Sen. John Kerry's running mate, but wanted to do more for the Democratic Party this time.

"I think the party kind of assumed that the election was a slam-dunk and found out the hard way you have to get out and work," he said.

So, this election season, Denton said he got in touch with the Edwards campaign and offered his help, including attending fundraisers in Los Angeles and stumping in the Heartland.

Edwards' proposals on ending the war in Iraq, providing universal health care and cleaning up the environment are what drew him to the candidate, Denton said.

"I decided I'll come to Iowa a few times and just do everything I can this time because I really believe he's the right guy," Denton said. "It's impressive to me that he's willing to say the tough things and let the chips fall where they may."

So we have someone who makes a living pretending to be a plumber telling us to vote for someone who made a living pretending to be a distraught fetus (in front of ignorant juries generous with other people's money). The Founding Fathers must be rolling over in their graves…

I, too, do not care particularly what a celebrity does..but they have the same right as any American citizen to show their support for the candidate of their choice. I can only applaud Denton for his choice. I hope the Democrat Party follows this path, not because of a celebrity, but because John Edwards is the person who can win in the general election. We must chose the candidate who can win the White House

Hey CNN America does not care who a celebrity endorses. Even more so if they are a C list celebrity at that.

No one cares what a overpaid under educated person thinks. Most of these celebrities have not finished college and barely passed High School. Why should any one care what a person who was hired for their looks not their brains think?

Please stop reporting this stuff like it is news. It's not. Leave the celebrity fluff for People magazine. Everytime you report what a celebrity thinks or endorses you make great journalist like Edward R. Murrow roll over in their graves. You taint the integrity of any real news story you report by doing this.

Why are Celebrities in American politics presumed to be an endorsement? Why would voters give their opinion anymore credence than an oridinary citizen's? Better still why would Americans elect a Celebrity as a political figure? Let alone their President! I mean Fred Thompson a Presidential Candidate! And a Sexy Plumber as John Edwards star supporter. Denton didn't do much for John in 2004 as his running mate why would he bolster votes now?

They'd be extradited to Cuba if they showed up with a Candidate in a Canadian election!

It is no wonder the Democratic Party and its candidates cannot find any support from conservatives and "value voters when they welcome campaign tour support from the actor on a show like "Desperate Housewives". This is indicative of the moral decay in Democratic Party and our society.

Maybe the former senator should start a TV show "Desperate Candidates".

In the end….which Democrat is going to say - "well…it was between Hillary, Obama and Edwards - if only there was someone who can tell me who to vote for….wait….is that world renouned actor James Denton….well…thats that - I'm voting for Giuliani…." - if only James Denton were stumping for Giuliani….he would only beat the left wing and the socialist by double digits

Yeah know Mr Edwards,is nice to see your daughter on the trail too.
Do the things you have to do, but women helping often is good to see.

Who cares who celebrities are supporting? Frankly, nothing makes people more out of touch with reality than being a celebrity.

Why not look at the donations to campaigns and look at things like who does the military support (Ron Paul), who gets most of their money from special interests like lobbyists (Clinton/McCain), real estate (Clinton/Romney) Hedge Funds(Romney/Giuliani/Dodd), drug companies (Romney) oil (Giluiani) defense contractors, bankers (Giuliani, Obama, Clinton, Romney, Dodd), lawyers (Edwards), etc..

That's the difference between journalism and info-tainment.

seriously, who is james denton?

Seth Powell, Greensboro, North Carolina   September 29th, 2007 5:48 pm ET

John Edwards is a winner! And so is James Denton. Who is this person calling people losers? We don't need name calling!
I was hoping it would actually be one of the Desperate Housewives, themselves, but this'll do…

Kathy Callan, Palo Cedro, CA   September 29th, 2007 5:39 pm ET

Good for Denton! He recognizes that John Edwards is the most progressive AND the most electable candidate in general elections. Edwards has a broad appeal to not only Democrats, but to Independents and Republicans, as well. Go, Edwards!

Pam Holt Los Angeles, CA   September 29th, 2007 5:28 pm ET

I don't understand how anyone could call John Edwards' healthcare plan "universal healthcare" when all it would do is make the corrupt insurance companies (whose only concern is profiting from NOT giving healthcare) much, much richer by requiring that we all have insurance. What is he, an insurance salesman (well, we know it's about who is giving him $$$)?

Dennis Kucinich has had a plan in Congress- HR 676- that will take our healthcare out of the corporate insurance companies hands, where it should have never been in the first place, and use the billions of our tax dollars that already go to these companies and use it to provide REAL Universal Healthcare! It would provide EVERYONE with medical, dental, prescription, mental health coverage- Medicare-for-all.

Not to mention Kucinich was always right about the war, he's got it right about doing away with NAFTA, providing equal marriage rights for all, and he has never in his career put anyone else's interest before his constituents- he can't be bought off! No strings attached!

It's as if we don't believe we deserve such a president, but we do. We really do…

This just proves how "smart" actors are.

Celebrity stumps for politician

SO WHAT!!!

It will not raise my interest in either the celbrity, the politicain, or you.

laurinda,ny   September 29th, 2007 4:00 pm ET

They sure would have to be desperate housewives to think he was sexy or cute. I wouldn't want to imagine what their husbands look like.

Jacob, Northfield, MN   September 29th, 2007 3:47 pm ET

All I have to say is who cares. Another person from the film industry getting supporting a democrat. WOW! Its a shame that this is worthy of even putting on CNN. Im just guessing but I think there are other things to write about.

A. Thomas, New York, NY   September 29th, 2007 3:47 pm ET

To Daniel:

Hillary still leads in Iowa, although it is statistically tied based on margin of errors. On the other hand, Edwards and Obama are still far behind Hillary in New Hamshire, Sooth Carolina and Nevada. The 4 states wrap up the first official primaries in next January.

If you include other state primaries, Obama poll standing is about half of Hillary (39% vs 21%), and Edwards is even worst.

As it stands, even if Hillary loses Iowa of Jan 19, she will be the come back girl for other primaries: Jan 19 for SC and Jan 22 of NH.

In other words, if Hillary loses Iowa, it is only phycological, and not critical. On the other hand, if Obama and Edwards lose Iowa, they are history, or their whole election campaign is just a dream as Micheele Obama put it.

Rocky, Los Angeles, CA   September 29th, 2007 3:38 pm ET

I dislike all politicians but Edwards sounds less full of it than the others.
Thats like saying the prettiest fat chick in a group though.

matt   September 29th, 2007 3:35 pm ET

Does Edwards really need anyone else considered "cute" by the female masses to join his campaign. I thought JRE himself already carried that demo…

Daniel, NY   September 29th, 2007 3:08 pm ET

The latest poll from Iowa has Edwards and Clinton tied. Iowa is really key for Obama and Edwards, as it appears to be the only obstacle to Clinton's nomination.

Vivian Fox Vancouver, WA   September 29th, 2007 3:03 pm ET

Who watches garbage like this ? Why is this guy going for Edwards. Another loser endorsing a loser ?

Maddox, NY,NY   September 29th, 2007 3:01 pm ET

Good enuff… Edwards is desperate, too. Unfortunately, who is Denton? We know the "housewives" better than the men.
