Paul's fundraising shock

Ron Paul raked in an impressive fundraising total.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - He's locked in low single digits in most polls, but Texas Rep. Ron Paul raised more than $5 million for his presidential bid in the third quarter, roughly equal to or just short of several of his higher -profile rivals.

"Dr. Paul's message is freedom, peace and prosperity," Paul campaign chairman Kent Snyder said in a statement announcing the total. "As these fundraising numbers show, more Americans each day are embracing Dr. Paul's message."

Paul's fundraising total is a 114-percent increase over what he raised last quarter and is also only $2 million shy of what Democratic White House hopeful John Edwards raised during the same period. It is also roughly equal to the fundraising totals of Arizona Sen. John McCain and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

I'm not a Republican but am impressed with this guy. That may sound strange, but he is honest, consistent and actually true to his convictions. He is a true conservative. I can respect that. Even if he were President, I'd be very comfortable. I say this as a progressive – at least you know what you are getting. Unlike so many Republicans today who say they are social conservative but then hire hookers, try to get with men in public restrooms or chase young boys! Or say they are fiscally conservative but then run up record debt, increase Medicare entitlement and spend drunkingly on war! I respect Ron Paul – would probably vote for him over 3 of the 8 Dem candidates (and I'm a Democrat!)

Noone has mentioned Ron Paul's opposition to the North American Union which will essentially remove any borders between Mexico, the US and Canada. This is all being done very secretly behind the scenes and includes the building of the NAFTA highway from the Pacific coast of Mexico into the heartland of the US and then into Canada. They are already printing the coins which will be known as the Amero!!!! This is serious and if it is not stopped now there will be no stopping it in a year. Ask your own senators and representatives whether they support this or whether they are working to stop it. We are dedicated Democrats who will be voting for Ron Paul because noone is talking about the important issues except for Ron Paul.

I love Ron Paul! The mainstream media may try to block him most times but the Internet is far reaching. It's funny to see how out of touch mainstream media really is now days. Good to see CNN report in on Ron Paul for once.

"...former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson."

Ron Paul still works hard at his responsibilities as a congressman, even as the campaign heats up.

ron paul is the best candidate out there and i believe he has the support of we the people...the only thing that worries me is that we get ourselves a fair election...there has to be some way that we the people can come up with a system to compare how many of us really do vote for him and what the elections show in the end

This made my day. If Paul was president people would be simply awestruck at how good freedom is and what it really means–many folks have forgotten. Under no other candidate would we get relief from the current facist and socialist policies that are now running our lives.

CNN, please, please start covering more of what Paul is all about! And thank you for putting this on the Political Ticker.

Go figure. If the socialist Hillary can't win, I guess I could vote for the constitutionalist, Ron Paul. Is this craziness or satire.

Hillary cannot think Ron Paul's thoughts. He is light years ahead of her.

I am surprised that Ron Paul is still in the single digits because at least twice that I know of he received more votes than any other candiate when viewers were asked who they felt won the debate.

I believe he has a following because he does not come across like a phony politician like all his rivals. I believe like most of his fans, he is really passionate about helping the country and the middle class and it shows.

We need to get rid of all the politicians that only think of themselves and the special interest groups. It is time for all Americans to take back our country. Go Ron

Good Lord. What is it with these neocons? When Paul does well in post-debate polls and straw polls, it's because of spammers; when he does well in fundraising it's George Soros.

Why is George Soros hiding under every rock for these people? And they call *Paul supporters* tinfoil hats!

"low single digits in most polls"?? Get your facts straight: http://www.ronpaul2008.com/straw-poll-results/

By the way, these polls represent people who actually get dressed and vote, not sit around in their underwear answering unsolicited phone calls in the middle of the afternoon.

    Glenn Ray – Cypress, Texas

You said "if you've listened to Dr. Paul's comments regarding the Executive Branch's agencies, it is clear that he wants to eliminate the beaurocracies and red tape; not necessarily all the agencies and departments themselves.

Glenn – would seeing the ACTUAL votes by Ron Paul convince you he is intent on eliminating the FBI, DHA, Department of Education, etc??

    – Opposed death penalty (Jan 2007)
    – Legalize drugs (July 2001)
    – Abolish the federal Dept of Education (Dec 2000)
    – Foreign aid harmful (Dec 2000)
    – End government secrecy (Aug 2007)
    – Let airlines make rules about passengers carrying guns (Sept 2007)
    – Abolish Medicare (Dec 2000)
    – Eliminate FBI & DHS (Sept 2007)
    – No border fence
    – Eliminate the IRS (May 2007)
    – Abolish Federal Welfare (Dec 2000)

Sorry – but Ron Paul couldn't win the national election if Hugo Chavez were his opponent.
