(CNN) - Campaigning in Clinton, Iowa, former Sen. Fred Thompson stops by the Sweetheart Bakery. After delivering a speech, the Tennessee Republican takes questions from the audience and one woman alludes to the comparisons of him and Ronald Reagan. Both men gained fame as actors and some rate the former senator’s communication skills with those of the conservative icon. Here, Thompson demurs on the comparison, and says it takes more than charisma to win a presidential campaign.

there is no comparison between thompson and Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan would never have wasted american lives in iraq, and would have fired people like rumsfield, cheny, and demoted the generals who would sacrafice our young men and women with poor planning, substandard equipment, and bad stragedy. Ronald may have pressed the button as truman did very effectively saving millions of americans from a death and harm in japan, and making a point that american lives are not political pawns but valuable. and our resources would be used to save them and not allow a tinhorn government like iraq to enslave them and hold them hostage to misguided administrative political ambitions. Ronald pulled us out of lebanon because he understood mideastern tribal conflict, and it did not take repetitious car bombs to sink in that the stragedy on the ground was flawed. Ronald was a leader, not a bush wanna be. thompson should take Newts lead and bow out of the race with mccain under his arm. The republicans need a new face as the current choices are stale and remenants of old politics not warrenting my vote.
Reagan was truly an amiable dunce whose reading from cue cards was dull and uninspiring, and the Fredster isn't half the grade-B actor Ronnie was. Both of these sad sack actors appeal only to the uneducated and uninformed masses.
Sure, Ronald Regan took alot of disiabled Americans off Social Security Disability, though. I recall people referring to it as Regan-nomics

Is this implying that Thompson has charisma? Everything I've seen suggests the exact opposite. The man seems to have a knack for boring the hell out of a crowd.

Seems Democrats are more interested in the cult of personality . Let's examine the records of these candidates and look beyond the visuals.
I'm tired of people comparing every Republican to Ronald Reagan. It's demeaning to Reagan's legacy, and inappropriate. None of these miserable failures running for President can fill the man's shoes.
To Joseph– if my memory serves me correctly, Rumsfeld was one of Reagan's closest buddies.
Thompson is just a joke. He did a pretty good job as an actor... he needs to keep that job. He's NOT Presidential material.

What does this guy stand for? I think he should take he trophy wife and go back to Hollywood.
People are educating themselves before the primaries: Facts are that the Democrats have a strong roster to choose from and the GOP candidates seem to all have fatal flaws... not to mention many are weary of 6 years of GOP dictatorship and the last year of GOP obstructionism.
Fred isn't running for office – he's ambling – no vision, no plans, no leadership, no fire in his belly. Too old to start over.
