Sen. Craig said he will pursue "additional legal options."

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Idaho Sen. Larry Craig said Thursday he will remain in the Senate and study "additional legal options" after a Minnesota judge refused to throw out his August guilty plea stemming from an airport sex sting.

In a statement from his office, the three-term Republican said he was "extremely disappointed" in Thursday's ruling.

"I am innocent of the charges against me. I continue to work with my legal team to explore my additional legal options," he said.

He said the past few weeks have shown that "it is possible for me to work here effectively," and said any replacement appointed by Idaho's governor would not have the seniority and committee assignments "that are valuable to Idaho."

"I'd rather lose with honor than behave like Democrats (see William Jefferson, William Jefferson Clinton or Teddy Kennedy)."
— —
Is "honor" for Republicans: Sen. Larry Craig, Sen. David Vitter (who replaced disgraced senator Robert Livingston), Sen. Mark Foley, Robert Allen (McCain's Florida campaign manager), Newt Gingrich, Thomas Ravenel (Giuliani's South Carolina campaign chairman), Tom Delay, Sen. Henry Hyde, 4-felony perjurer Scooter Libby, George "We've Never Been Stay The Course" Bush, Albert "I Can't Recall" Gonzales, Michael "Hell of a Job" Brown or moral hypocrites like Ronald Reagan and Fred Thompson who had to marry their pregnant girlfriends?

Although you might never hear it from a Republican and may not believe it yourself, Bill Clinton was found NOT GUILTY of perjury. He was acquitted because a few Republicans voted "not guilty" including current presidential candidate Fred Thompson.

Mrs. America   October 8th, 2007 2:26 am ET

I think Craig admitted he committed perjury when he tried to take back his guilty plea. On another note and as others have mentioned, the Dems definitely want Craig to hold his seat (not the toilet seat) until the next election so they can pick up that state.

Frank Honolulu Hawaii   October 7th, 2007 5:57 pm ET

The way he's been communicating to us obviously has been in code.
What he means by saying 'he's staying' means 'he's leaving'.

To David Gamblin : October 5, 2007 8:41 pm

Hypocracy, Gay rights, Lying is not an issue here at all.

That is because people of Idaho had already decided to send Sen. Craig to Washington. The people of Idaho carried their decision for more than eighteen years.

Look at his arrest and ensuing events closely and ask yourself a question -

Who stand to gain materially by his resignation?

The issue is conflict between mandate of people who elect sentors and powers who are keen to bend that mandate.

Anonymous   October 5th, 2007 11:22 pm ET

For the benefit of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY, Larry needs to fight to stay in Office. Why you ask?
If Larry resigns, then the Idaho Republican Governor will appoint a new Republican Senator. This gives the Newly appointed Republican Senator the exposure to be easily re-elected in next election.
If Larry doesn't resign, and is able to stay in office. Larry will stay in the spot light(National News) as the Disgraced Hypocrit Republican Senator, who thinks more about himself, then 4 the good of his party and country. If he stays in office. The Democrats have a lot better chance of picking up his seat in the Senate. Love all these Ignorant Republicans that make references to liberal democrats double standards, ok for Bill, not 4 Larry. Not one Democrat has sought his impeachment. They are very thankful 4 his totally humiliating, disgraceful, hypocritical act. I do not think he is impeachable. The Democrats are not going to vote 4 it. They want him to serve the whole term, KEEP HIM IN THE SPOT LIGHT 4 THE WORLD TO SEE. The Republicans are HORRIFIED at this SCENARIO! THIS IS HILARIOUS. HE IS TRULY AN ACCURATE REPRESENTATION OF WHAT THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION STANDS FOR. LIEING HYPOCRITS!!! GEORGE BUSH DESERVES THIS!!!!!

D Gamblin, Brandon, MS   October 5th, 2007 9:45 pm ET

By the way, I never said I wanted Larry Craig to resign. He is a total embarrassment to the Republican Party! Just re-inforcing what a lieing, untrustworthy hypocrit the Republicans are. The longer he stays, the worse it looks for this Administration. Let's go to the real issues with this Administration. The immoral and illegal war the Bush Administration has put us in. Getting close to one trillion dollars of American Taxpayers money. Where this Administration let's out all the good information about the war. But when it comes to the bad information, say information about how corrupt the Iraqi Government is? How much $$$$$ going to the Iraqi Government ends up in the Insurgents hands to kill American troops? The answer is, that is National Security classified information. Our Iragi Ambassador Larry Butler(what a joke) stated this repeatly at a Congressional hearing. We can only release information in a closed Congressional hearing. In a closed Congressional hearing, No one is allowed to tell the public what is really going on, and how bad this administration has handled the war! This is outragous!!!! This is not just a Democrat or Republican issue. This is an issue for all Americans!!! We are being screwed over by Bush!!!!!!!

D Gamblin, Brandon, MS   October 5th, 2007 9:11 pm ET

How come the one's who yell "Moral Christian Family Values" the loudest, and bash gay people the most, are the ones getting busted in Sex Scandels, and mostly GAY SEX SCANDALS these days???? TOTAL HYPOCRACY!!!! Has stating, "Moral Christian Family Values" become the secret code 4, "I want to have Gay Sex", in the Republican Party? Just an observation…….

Also, Raman, Plano, TX

Your comments earlier are totally ridiculous!!!! Hypocracy, truth/lieing, and accountability are the issues here. The Jesus cmnt, "he who casts the 1st stone" doesn't fit. I have sinned, and admit to it. I am not gay, but have nothing agasinst gay people. They were born that way. Jesus never made any statement that being gay is a sin. 1st 1st Corintheans 6. verses 9-10 was written by a MAN approx 120 years after Jesus. He was wrong. Just like the Church was wrong about the Earth being Flat, the Earth is the center of the Universe, and the Sun circled the Earth. Raman, I have a problem with lieing, denying, and still denying Political Officials!!!!! Hypocracy is a major issue, and that is in both PARTIES!!!!!! Right now, the Republicans are the biggest HYPOCRITS of the two parties!!!!!!

David Gamblin   October 5th, 2007 8:41 pm ET

To Raman, Plano, TX. Hypocracy is not the issue? Hypocracy, HONESTY/LIEING, and CREDITABILITY are the main issues! You have a Senator who has repeatly been accused being GAY. This same Senator has also been one of the BIGGEST ANTI-GAY BASHING CONGESSMAN/SENATORS in Washington. Evidently, in his mind, sponsoring and supporting anti-gay laws is his way of being FORGIVEN 4 his GAY SEXUAL ACTIVITIES. Then he gets busted in an airport bathroom gay sting operation. That is total hypocracy. I an not gay, but also, I do not consider being gay a sin, people are born that way. There is not one place in the BIBLE where Jesus says it is a sin to be GAY. 1st Corintheans 6, verses 9-10 was written by a MAN, approx 120 years after Jesus. That is as wrong as the Church was about the World being flat, earth the center of the universe, and the sun circling the earth. AS 4 the "he who has not sinned" comment is ridiculous, like your comments. I am the 1st person to admit I have sinned, everyone has. But I do not lie and deny like Larry Craig has. Nor do I lie and deny like the Bush Administration on this illegal and immoral war. The Republican Party use to be a Proud and trustworthy political organization. But something went wrong somewhere in the 60's, and has been corrupt ever since. I do not agree w/ everything the Democrats stand 4, but they are definitely a lot more accountable then the GOP, the Party of Hypocracy!!!!!!!

James, Phoenix AZ   October 5th, 2007 5:29 pm ET

HOW IMPRESSIVE!!

All these wonderful statements from Democrats about Larry Craig. Here I was under the impression "Progressives" were tolerant and feel sexual indiscretions shouldn't be a big deal.

Hmmm… MAYBE it's only when Democrats have sex (with interns) that "tolerance" is demanded?? Bill Clinton, Barney Frank, and the gang applaud your double standards!

Integrity First, Fort Worth, TEXAS   October 5th, 2007 5:25 pm ET

OK, here we go… for the ten millionth time…

Bill Clinton was NOT, NOT, NOT impeached because of his sex life.

He was impeached because HE LIED UNDER OATH to a FEDERAL GRAND JURY.

I don't care WHAT the topic was that he was lying about… sex, the color of the sky, or how many cards he's holding in a game of Hearts…

He perjured himself. Under Oath. To a Federal Grand Jury. Perjury. Period.

He also suborned perjury. That's "asking others to lie for him," for us "non-progressive rubes" in the fly-over red states.

Now, Larry Craig on the other hand, is a buffoon. If he lied in a sworn statement, Minnesota should throw the book at him. As a Conservative, I would support that 100 percent… in fact, I expect and demand it.

This is where my party needs to step up and require that he step down. If it means we are one more seat short of taking back the Senate, then so be it.

I'd rather lose with honor than behave like Democrats (see William Jefferson, William Jefferson Clinton or Teddy Kennedy).

It's time we as a nation, start requiring more of our elected representation. It's not enough to simply say, "Oh well… just as long as we win." It's time we demand that these people actually behave in a manner befitting the honorable title that we bestow upon them.

One example, Ronald Reagan and the late great Tip O'Neill were polar opposites politically. But they were good and honorable gentlemen, who behaved as such, and were cordial to one another. For they knew not only did their great nation expect that behavior of them, but that they expected it of themselves.

It's time WE start expecting it again.

Raman, Plano TX   October 5th, 2007 1:28 pm ET

To the likes of David Gamblin, Brandon, MS

You have a right to your own opinion.

Legally, Sen. Criag pead to a misdemenour.

Biblically, what about the saying from Jesus, about your ability to throw a stone at sinner, if only you have not sinned in your life.

I think hypocrisy is not an issue here.

The issue here is conflict between mandate of people who elect senators, and powers that are keen to bend that mandate.

Where are all the self-righteous Republicans now? They have been screaming for years about Bill Clinton perjuring himself about his sex life. Here we have the identical situation, but with Larry Craig actually going to court to try to prove that he perjured himself about his sex life.

So are Republicans going to pursue Larry Craig with the same level of honesty they pursued Bill Clinton for an identical crime or are they going to show everyone what hypocrites they are?

David G, Bossier City LA   October 5th, 2007 12:32 pm ET

This guy will go to any length to save his political career. Think of the presecution he will put apon others just to prove to the world he's not gay. Wake up Larry and quit lying to yourself. BTW nice comment on the GOP (Grand Old Perverts). I wonder what happens? You wake up one day, rich and old maybe a little bored and think to yourself: "I think I'll have sex with another man?" I just don't get it! When will the American people throw these bums out!

C. Baugh, Ft. Walton Beach, FL   October 5th, 2007 12:06 pm ET

David Gamblin, Brandon, MS   October 5th, 2007 11:51 am ET

What a hypocrit!!! Check out his 1982 denial of being gay, video on Youtube. When rumor of Congressional Leaders & Page Boy Drug & Gay Sex Scandal hit National News, not 1 name ever surfaced. As soon as story broke, Closet Gay Larry Craig calls a Press Conferance and proclaims he is not gay!! His name was never menioned, and yet he automatically claimed he was innocent. Guilty conscience definitley evident. What amazes me is, Douglas Marshall, former page, and later a liason of the Ford Administration was caught with 19.5 ounces of cocaine at his home(along with Robert Finkel & Troy Todd). No charges were ever filed 4 possession or distribution. Guess since they were supplying Republican House and Senate Members, so they could entice young page boys 4 gay sex, it's ok. Reagan Administration swept this under the rug real fast. The GOP has new meaning, "Grand Old Perverts". or "The Party 4 Hypocritcy". Nothing has really changed in 25 years.

Raman, Plano TX   October 5th, 2007 11:39 am ET

I love this, all the Dems crowing. Let's see here..Craig pleads guilty, it comes out, RNC and Senate Republican leaders state he should resign. Immediately. They didn't wait for the Dem's to start harping, they did it on their own. Now, poor ol Jefferson down in La., with 90,000 in marked FBI money in his freezer is still on the job, no Democratic leaders have asked him to step down or even step aside (still got his comitee assignments). I guess solicitation is more important to Dem's than bribery. which group is it again that is obsessed with sex? Hahahaha

Cheney/Bush and the previous Republican-led congress proves my point.

Beto, Seattle   October 4th, 2007 10:51 pm ET

Good move Sen. Craig. Your claim of innocence may not sound too good in the current climate, but neither do I think you should bow to polls or opinions from the general public. All those that want you out of the Senate are the same ones that wanted Bill Clinton to fight his immoral behavior and stay in the White House after being caught with his "pants down." He was willing to drag the country through the mud and dirt and impeachment proceedings because of his hunger for power, rather than leave his position and himself with some dignity. At least President Nixon showed that the Presidency is more important than any one man and he just left when he got caught rather than drag the Presidency through what Clinton did.

Bradley Schaubs, Greeley, CO   October 4th, 2007 6:35 pm ET

With the Republicans' association with such disgraceful politicians as Bush (no explanation needed), McCain (for his "Christian Nation" comment), Limbaugh ("Phony Soldiers" remark), and Craig (homosexual behavior), it's no wonder why Hillary and the Democrats are leading in the polls.

A United States senator is supposed to be an individual who is fair, just, and keeps to his word to serve the people. This is a term that no longer applies to Craig (or any of the above mentioned people). He says he's against gay rights, yet his behavior in June could be seen as asking for gay sex. He said he'd leave office if unable to overturn his guilty plea, yet now he keeps on postponing his retirement. Face it, Craig, you can neither outrun nor hide from the inevitable. Do yourself and your party a favor: take yourself and Bush into a dark cave and never come out again.

I expect an appeal case would only uphold today's ruling. And if Craig stays in office even if that happens, it is my belief that the good people of the state of Idaho will unanimously vote to initiate impeachment proceedings against Craig and Bush. To rephrase what some people say: Craig is an unsightly pimple on the rear end of the Republican party.

This is great. He'll serve as a symbol of the ethics for the Republican party. He would likely be replaced by a less divisive Republican, so let's keep Craig in office until the next election. He's the gift that keeps on giving. First he pleads guilty, then he states his intention to resign, then he tries to not plead guilt, then says he'll stay in the Senate. A professional flip-flopper and toe-tapper in one!

* Can't figure out whether he's going to quit the senate

What else can't this guy figure out?

What I can figure out is this: When people will vote for such a clod and entrust him with so much responsibility, our basis for government is … well, is there any point in saying it?

To think that my Dad fought WW2 for jokers like this. How pathetic.

mike adkins, charlotte,nc   October 4th, 2007 5:29 pm ET

LARRY CRAIG IS AN IDIOT! he plead guilty to a misdemeanor to avoid prosecution for the more serious sex offense . it happens all the time in our court system. he has not been tried except in the court of public opinion, so he should shut up, let it go and tap dance all the way home.

David, Encinitas, CA   October 4th, 2007 5:26 pm ET

If he was a democrat, do you think the republicans would be giving him a moment's peace?

Scott, Poughkeepsie NY   October 4th, 2007 5:17 pm ET

This is AWESOME! One of the stupidest things Craig could do and a real drag on the Republican Party! This man so clearly lives in a world of denial.

stephen   October 4th, 2007 5:16 pm ET

Idaho in play for 08? Any thoughts?

Brad, Stockton, CA   October 4th, 2007 5:15 pm ET

Larry, HOW STUPID ARE YOU?

Waiting and hoping and praying that everything will blow over and reminding us over and over again that you are NOT gay.

Get real. YOU are the one responsible for all of the continuing hype. I'm sure that most intelligent people don't care if you are gay, however what is disgusting to me is that the people of Idaho are willing to put up with a has-been, power-tripped moron as their state's example of a United States Senator.

I smile to myself every time I hear your name, because I know that as long as it continues to be in the news, your party continues to wither away while you your name becomes more synonomous with the word "gay" each and every day.

Gay or not, and regardless of how much money you spend on lawyers, you will always be remembered by the American people as the gay senator from Idaho.

I certainly hope that you can keep your name in the news all the way to the 2008 election.

Barney Frank US-Govt   October 4th, 2007 5:14 pm ET

What?? This guy can't stay in office after being involved in a sex scandal!!

bobbysingleton, Philadelphia, PA   October 4th, 2007 5:11 pm ET

I think Craig should take his case to court. That way he'll get to squirm under scrutiny of all the other stuff in his closet.

He may not think he's leaving the Senate, but he will be leaving the Senate.

Trollmaster, CA   October 4th, 2007 5:09 pm ET

Is this guy a secret agent of the Democrat party trying to make Repubilcans look bad, or is he truly this arrogant and stupid?

Bill, Streamwood, IL   October 4th, 2007 5:07 pm ET

Thank you Senator Craig, you have shown all of us what it means to be a true conservative Republican.

Now on another note, we need to determine which Democratic candidate sold his or her soul to the devil.I mean it can't get any better for the Democrats and any worse for Republicans.

Or can it?

Ed,Ellenville,New York   October 4th, 2007 5:06 pm ET

The right-wing needed a gay poster-boy! I bet Dobson is getting really uncomfortable, probably calling a male prostitute right now for a "massage" and some crystal meth.

Richard, Sioux Falls, South Dakota   October 4th, 2007 5:03 pm ET

The man who pled guilty and signed a statement saying he would make no claim of innocence - now says he's innocent.

The man who said he would resign - now says he won't resign.

The man who claims to be worried about Idaho having seniority in the senate - refuses to let any replacement get started early to build seniority.

The man who claims he's not gay, has never stated whether or not he's bi-sexual. Is he parsing words by construing the term "gay" to mean a person who ONLY has sex with men - and saying 'that's not me'?

Typical politician. His words mean nothing. He's concerned only about holding onto power.

Sybil,ny   October 4th, 2007 5:00 pm ET

The Republicans are a stubborn group of people. They refuse to give up even when they're wrong.

Rodney Dallas TX   October 4th, 2007 4:58 pm ET

Talk about a flip flopper. So is Bush standing behind him like he did all the other crooks, I mean, friends, ergh members of his administration?

Steve K., Washington, DC   October 4th, 2007 4:57 pm ET

Is lurking in bathroom stalls and attempting to engage in lewd sex acts a crime??? Give the guy a break!

F. Bernhardt, Drumheller, Alberrta   October 4th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

When are we going to elect politicians that do what they say. Whether innocent or quilty, if you say you are going to resign if the judge does not allow a change of plea, then do what you said you would do. Where is integrity, honesty etc. It is about time we incorporate term limits for ALL politicians.

Ryan, New York, NY   October 4th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

Wow, the Republicans must really regret pushing the term "flip-flop" a few years back.

Fred, Reston VA   October 4th, 2007 4:53 pm ET

Wow…didn't see that one coming. SIKE!

Right wingers are so arrogant. Does he really think he needs to stay in the Senate in order to give Idaho more clout in Senate committees, especially when repubs are in the minority???? What a piece of work.

Shawn, Lincoln, NE   October 4th, 2007 4:49 pm ET

The Republican Party must be sick of this entire episode being drawn out and getting continued attention. The bigger question is whether another Republican will be able to fill his seat or will another Jon Tester western Democrat be able to seize on the discontent with this and gain another seat for the Democrats. The Repubicans are happy to keep the seat for now but it may hurt them in the long run. Why keep him if his resignation would make room for a successor that would have an incumbent advantage in the next election cycle. It doesn't make any sense to me, and I'm a democrat!!

GB Dallas, TX   October 4th, 2007 4:49 pm ET

YES !!!!!

Thank you Larry. Now if we can just get Mark Foley back!!!

I'm excited about '08

Richard, Tucson, AZ   October 4th, 2007 4:47 pm ET

It's time for congress to kick this guy out. He's shown by his actions that he is not the kind of leader that this country needs. While his sexuality does not come into play whatsoever, his lack of common sense do. He has proved that he makes bad choices and is not willing to live up to his word. Get him out.

Zack, NJ   October 4th, 2007 4:47 pm ET

He should just resign. He's making himself and Idaho look more and more like a big joke.

Randy S. Lawton, OK   October 4th, 2007 4:46 pm ET

Idaho must be very proud.

Pete Gage, Eagan MN   October 4th, 2007 4:46 pm ET

Typical Washington double-talk. Agree to one thing and do another. No wonder Congress's approval rating is at an all time low. The man is a disgrace to his state and to the entire country. No one in Congress takes responsibility for any of their actions. We need a common sense party instead of Repulican or Democrat parties.

VanReuter NY NY   October 4th, 2007 4:44 pm ET

Stay Larry…stay until at least November of 2008. We're with you buddy!

Regards,
The DNC

spinstopper   October 4th, 2007 4:44 pm ET

Yeah, he's staying, at least until the next election. But he'll have to switch parties to get re-elected after that..

Hugh Miller Weeki Wachee, Florida   October 4th, 2007 4:42 pm ET

Larry Craig can find more ways to lie that has ever been tried before. Your times up …You need to go.

Fed Up, Boise, ID   October 4th, 2007 4:41 pm ET

It's bad enough that Sen. Craig, by his own guilty plea, has admitted to improper conduct. But how he's proven himself dishonest as well.

First he promised to resign. Then he said he'd resign at the end of September if not cleared by then. Then he said he'd resign if the judge ruled he could not reverse his guilty plea. September came and went, and the judge ruled he could not reverse it. So now he's *still* not resigning, so he can "explore additional legal options".

Get the corrupt politicans who can't even be consistent with themselves inside a month out of Washington.

Sean, Boston MA   October 4th, 2007 4:38 pm ET

This guy is such a boob….when will her just go away. What a disgrace to his office and his family. Good riddens if you ask me. Got caught, admitted to it, then says, whoops, didn't really mean it? What, he didn't think this would come out in the press!? Come on Senator - grow up and take what you deserve!

Anthony Odessa, TX   October 4th, 2007 4:38 pm ET

Mr. Craig -

Finally, a politician who is doing what is right for his state. Idaho would lose very valuable seniority and committee assignments if you were to leave. As a Democrat, I must say that I admire your willingness to tell Mitch McConnell to go to Hadies(sp?).

You got an unfair shake from the Senate Republican Leadership. Why were you treated with much more disdain than David Vitter?

Pixie, Murfreesboro, TN   October 4th, 2007 4:34 pm ET

You go Senator Craig! If they aren't going to force someone like Vitter who hires prostitutes (a crime btw), then why should they force you out for some consensual man lovin? It aint right!

(Psst - Just tell them that God has forgiven you and they'll pretend like everything's ok!)

Joe Idaho   October 4th, 2007 4:33 pm ET

If he runs for re-election that'll be another senate seat the democrats can pick up in '08, keep your fingers crossed that he's so self-absorbed that we can make it so

JAB   October 4th, 2007 4:32 pm ET

Give it up Mr. Craig - you're done.

Laura - Tulsa, OK   October 4th, 2007 4:31 pm ET

He's entitled to due process of law (what was he accused of , anyway?…)

I just hope his process will not come out of taxpayers' money.

jo, ATL GA   October 4th, 2007 4:30 pm ET

Larry we can also show you kindness and say one can not loss their job over sex.

Unilike you, "thinking you are holyier than thou".

I have no problem with you staying even if Idaho votes to send you back.

Evan   October 4th, 2007 4:28 pm ET

haha, thank you, Mr. Craig. You are the democrats' best friend.

I can see the November 2009 headline now: "Craig Loses in Landslide"

Mike, Cleveland, Ohio   October 4th, 2007 4:28 pm ET

I sort of hope Craig stays in office because this could help the Dems in the long run. Think about it this way, if he resigns, another GOP person fills his seat (governor appointment). This will give the GOP a boost in the 2008 Idaho senate regular election, the new appointee can claim that he/she is experienced in office, etc. Whereas when Craig leaves office when his term expires, then this will be an open seat, with a slim possibility for a Dem senator.

RJ, NY   October 4th, 2007 4:27 pm ET

Hypocrite. Liar. Embarrassment. Fake. Hey Larry, why don't you listen to the people around you (you know… the voters, the taxpayers and your friends) - leave like you said you would. You have let down the American public and you (as the judge said) are a big boy (or baby as it seems) and should know as a Senator what the law is. What a joke you are. If anyone researches the cop who nailed this clown, you will all realize that although there is a lot of police corruption, there is FAR MORE of it up on the Hill. This cop was a noble guy who has a history of doing the right thing. Ever take a look into Craig's history? Go on You Tube and check out Larry's other 'gay' adventures. Joke.

Connie, Tn.   October 4th, 2007 4:24 pm ET

This guy really has a "decision making" problem. Just what we need in the Senate.
