Fred Thompson, joined by his wife, Jeri, prepares to address the "Defending the American Dream" summit.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The main event during Tuesday night's Republican presidential debate in Michigan is Fred Thompson's debate debut.

The former Republican senator and "Law & Order" star's plan is to assert himself as the "common sense, consistent conservative" and harken back, as he does on the campaign trail, to his place in the Class of 1994 that led the Republicans to their historic capture of the House and the Senate.

Look for rivals, though, to question the credibility of Thompson's effort to place himself in the shadow of Ronald Reagan during the debate, which is sponsored by CNBC, the Wall Street Journal, the Michigan Republican Party, and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

I'm so glad that Frankenstein's monster has done so well for himself. He can talk pretty decently now, but does not make a whole lot of sense with a transplanted brain and all. I guess the Dr. had the good sense to get certain parts from a big boy, because something's got to explain attracting one of Hef's cast offs as his wife. Good for you Fred. You are doing a lot for your kind! (And you just MUST give me the name of your plastic surgeon who took the bolts out of your neck–it looks fabulous!)

Lisa Ling, Dallas, TX   October 9th, 2007 7:58 pm ET

I'd be willing to bet that if Freddy didn't have the Law & Order gig under his belt and his politician status that his pretty little wife would never ever have given him a second look in the grocery store line that day they met. More likely she would have been thinking "what a letch". She surely didn't marry him for his looks or his personality or his intelligence... or lack thereof.

I left a post earlier that was removed. I was just kidding! They are a wonderful couple! Anyway, Thompson has been hiding in the weeds while the other rep. candidates debate the issues. Now that no rep. has emerged as someone who is clearly electable, he wants to jump and make alot of folks sayings and present a big strong square jawed image without any substance. He's hoping that Americans haven't wised up since falling for W's soundbite simplicity.

Well, Fred I will give you advice that every actor gets, Don't quit your day job,,,,,wait do you have a day job.

In the Republican race, the religious right is definitely keeping up the pressure on Rudy Giuliani, with a new speech by Dobson and new emails by Iowa Christian groups.

Buggie, San Diego, CA   October 9th, 2007 12:43 pm ET

I absolutely must agree.

Mr. Thompson is exactly like Ronald Reagan…no pulse.

Cable King Pittsburgh PA   October 9th, 2007 12:28 pm ET

Mr. Flintstone is a "plant" (nomenclature unknown) whose job is to make the currently confused Repubs look better.

Ron Dallas, TX   October 9th, 2007 11:35 am ET

We have already been without intelligent leadership for eight years. Why would we want to try it again?

To DAN,SLIDELL,LA

You have being living in a Social order state. And America has being one since its creation. Socialism has made America God's gift to man-kind. Socialism is the reason we all pay taxed into a single pot and the Government get to spent from it.

Now if you don't want your country to be great don't pay taxes. If you know anything about politics, you will know Gov has to spend that money. Just because u are rich or OK with live does not mean Gov should drop its responsible and not take care of the poor.

I won't educate you here...and God knows Limburg and Sean are not doing you justice. They are very wealthy people and care about their bottom line and not yours.

So learn something. Socialism is not bad if it is practiced correctly. No matter who's being president of USA, they have protected that right for u to have Social Security for the Old and basic life necessities.

Get it right.

Fred's the biggest joke running. No way would I vote for someone who was purposely scamming the election rules.

juice, baltimore, md   October 9th, 2007 11:00 am ET

Fred too old for me , but I heard he is leading in the polls alright according to cnn. Who else dictates for America?

Judging The Debates

CNN believes “The main event during Tuesday night's Republican presidential debate in Michigan is Fred Thompson's debate debut.”

John Gibson on the Fox News Channel believes the anti-Republican bias of debate co-moderator Chris Matthew is the story, “How in the world can NBC put on a fair debate with a moderator like Matthews?”

When the debate starts, smart Republican voters will not care about the endless candidate trivia, or campaign stump theatrics. In order to make a realistic assessment of candidate’s beliefs and values, Republican voters will look for factual information. The sideshows of Thompson’s first debate and Matthew’s bias are inconsequential. The often snide and elitist Chris Matthews will be taken for what he is. Thankfully, we won’t see Wolf Blitzer asking candidates ludicrous questions to be answered a show of hands.

The pertinent subjects for the debate are 1. the war on terror, 2. the economy and how we compete with Asian and European nations, 3. preserving our culture and values, 4. excessive taxes and spending in Washington. The voters will look for the candidate with the experience and ethics covering each of these subjects.

Who will win this and future Republican debates? A forward looking, positive candidate who speaks clearly, in complete sentences, and who is impressive in explaining how he will approach these problems will carry the field. After all, the Republicans are really selecting a candidate that presents a clear choice and credibly to oppose Hillary Clinton on these key issues next year.

Matthew, Keller, TX   October 9th, 2007 10:39 am ET

Freddy T in 08!

Wynter, Loudon, NH   October 9th, 2007 10:22 am ET

This debate should be an interesting show just to see how he holds up under the pressure. Will Fred flop or float or fly? Given his efforts so far the chances that he might even survive aren't doing so great.

Good Luck either way. It ought to be an interesting comedy.

Telling it like I see it,
Wynter

Lord help us if this old geezer gets into the White House. What a piece of work he is with his conservative views. (Isn't there something in the bible that states you shouldn't marry someone who's young enough to be your grandchild). I don't know how he works in Hollywood with such archaic opinions. He'll take us back 50 years but then I guess that may be his appeal.
Why don't we see young beautiful women with old poor guys?

Paul, Philadelphia   October 9th, 2007 10:09 am ET

Dan, you give Slidell a bad name. A new social order? Please.

It bugs me to no end when some Republicans call Democrats socialists and some Democrats call Republicans fascists.

First of all, if either of these parties was what these people claim they are, we would never EVER have fair elections in this country.

And the two party system would dissolve into one ruling party. If ever this were going to happen, it would have been in 2002 when the Republicans had complete control of the White House, the Capital, and the Supreme Court. But it didn't happen.

On the political spectrum – ranging from totalitarian regimes on the one side and utopian anarchy on the other, Republicans and Democrats are very VERY close to each other.

We are all Republicans. We are all Democrats. The only thing that separates us is our opinions on insignificant social issues.

But I wouldn't expect someone from Slidell La to get that.

Tom Dedham, Mass   October 9th, 2007 9:46 am ET

Just remember, Fred, you're a Republican. You hate gays, love guns and want to restrict freedoms and trample on the Constitution.

Posted By James (the real one), Phoenix AZ : October 8, 2007 7:17 pm

How about some details there "Jimmy".

The hating of gays, would that include most of the Democrats who are also against gay mariage or do you just pick and choose who "hates"?

I am ok with people owning guns as long as there is a process nationwide that checks out their backround thoroughly. Isn't that one of our amendments "Jimmy", the right to bear arms. Are you trying to trample on the constitution?

Whose freedoms are being restricted, yours?

What are you trying to do that is causing this great country to "restrict" you exactly?

The only thing real about you is your ignorance.

Bring on the real James from AZ as he provides details and facts when he posts.

pat, huntington, ny   October 9th, 2007 9:37 am ET

He's prepping by learning that the Soviet Union no longer exists, China and US have had diplomatic relations since the early 1970s, women gained the right to vote in the early part of the last century, and by studying maps. What an idiot!

LoooseyGoosey   October 9th, 2007 9:34 am ET

Love that picture. Now there's a wife Bill and Hillary can be jealous of...

Pickles, Monaca, PA   October 9th, 2007 9:21 am ET

There are some of us who aren't sentimental about Ronald Reagan, the neo-con who initiated over a quarter of a century of the anti-Republican neo-con hell that has brought us to the Iraqi war, a walloping federal deficit, a trashed Bill of Rights, and an assault upon civil liberties.

Joe, Florida   October 9th, 2007 7:22 am ET

Let's see Freddie boy handling this first debate. The best thing other Republican Candidates can do to hurt his campaign is to ignore him. I hope they are smart enough not to all go at him; they will just give him more attention by doing that.

Anyways, he'll probably such; we've all seen how poor he performs without a script. He's just full of it.

Anonymous   October 9th, 2007 12:45 am ET

He better be ready for the *ss whooping he is going to get from Ron Paul.

Aaron, Bondurant, IA   October 8th, 2007 11:06 pm ET

Thompson is a hack. You prep for a test, not a debate. What's he doing, reading the questions???

Andrew, NJ   October 8th, 2007 10:56 pm ET

common sense for Thompson means he'll utter such things as:

"We need to stop doing whats not working...and start doing more of whats working!"

"That dog don't hunt"

Frankly I can't wait until the debate...just so that I can know that the Fred Thompson supporters that are so ardent in supporting him...can see the guy for what he is...and not for who he plays on law and order

DAN,SLIDELL,LA.   October 8th, 2007 9:37 pm ET

BRING ON THE HAMMER FRED!! AMERICA NEEDS YOU!!!! HIT THEM HARD!!
GOD BLESS AMERICA BECAUSE THE DEMO'S WANT A NEW SOCIAL ORDER!!!!!!!

Jeff Spangler, Arlington, VA   October 8th, 2007 9:28 pm ET

This laughable rube is toast. As has been said of Terry Bradshaw, he couldn't spell "cat" if you spotted him the "c" and the "t".

Lee, Mays Landing NJ   October 8th, 2007 8:11 pm ET

He's been such a flop so far that he's got the ezpectations so low that the pundits can declare him a "winner" by virtue of not expecting much from him.

The expectation game is silly. The image game is silly. Just pick the sharpest guy in the room, not the guy who beats some bottom of the barrel "expectations" or has a catchy one-liner.

laurinda,ny   October 8th, 2007 6:56 pm ET

Well, he might as well put himself in Ronald's shadow because he wasn't very good either.
