Kennedy undergoes surgery for blockage

Doctors removed a blockage from Sen. Ted Kennedy's left carotid artery Friday.

BOSTON (CNN) – Doctors removed a blockage from Sen. Ted Kennedy's left carotid artery Friday, and the senator was said to be "fine."

Kennedy's office said the blockage was discovered "as part of a routine evaluation of Senator Kennedy's back and spine."

"MRI studies picked up an unrelated, asymptomatic blockage in the senator's left carotid artery," the office said in a written statement. "This morning, Senator Kennedy underwent preventive surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital to remove the blockage.

"The surgery, which was performed by Doctor Richard Cambria, was routine and successful. After a very brief recovery period, Senator Kennedy will resume his normal schedule in Washington and in Massachusetts."

Kennedy's doctors said they performed a carotid endarterectomy, which involves making a cut in the neck and pulling plaque out of the artery.

Cambria told reporters the surgery was routine and uneventful. He said Kennedy, 75, was resting comfortably and was drinking ginger ale, eating ice cream and looking forward to watching the Red Sox on television Friday night. The senator is expected to make a full recovery.

Typically, Cambria said, blockages are surgically corrected only if the artery is at least 70 percent blocked, and Kennedy's blockage was in that range.

You poor deluded soul. Virgin Mary indeed. There never have been or ever will be virgins within a 50-mile radius of Ted Kennedy, he made sure of that. Such a patron of the arts he is, he's studied every nude body in America and them some. What a moral compass he is.

Teddy made a dreadful mistake 40 years ago. Did our legal system find him guilty of anything? Sorry, you raw meat eaters, but that's the official record.

The Senator continues to provide a valuable public service. His very presence continues to draw out some of the most deplorable forms of human behavior.

America should first deal with this rot from within before it embarks on a worldwide trip to force its moral will on the world.

A man in a surgery, have people lost their heart? to wish him evil. Those people who express hatred(towards a patient),will recieve it back in double fold and good measure, during thier most vulnerable situation(that is a golden rule and not my opinion).

May God heal Sen.Kennedy and help him in his speedy recovery. May love, grace and peace surround him.

"Thank God that the great liberal lion's voice has not been silenced. "

Lasik surgery can correct that vision issue you have. It's not a liberal lion you see – rather portly swine drunk off sour mash crying how unfair it is to deport illegal aliens.

"Will — Laura Bush didn't run from the scene when she was 17, smear the deceased or try and cover it up. Will, you got to learn facts, then know how to make an argument or rationale comparison of those facts…no wonder our country is falling apart, dolts like you actually make statements."

Touch a nerve did I? Everybody knows she was drunk when she hit him. Look it up. And your argument style is -how should i put this?- Lacking? They did try and cover it up, hide it, purge the records. You'd know that, and make a convincing argument if you weren't blinded by partisan hackery, the kind that drives you to a site to malign a senator while he's in the hospital recovering from surgery. Now THAT's why our country is falling apart.

I don't recall nearly as many death wishes for Bush or Cheney on here when they were operated on.

    Just an observation.

Wow, I suppose most of the negative, hateful comments posted here are from people who call themselves Christians as well as republicans. As Christians we are to forgive but in this country most Christians seem to be a pretty vengeful lot. And, for those of you dredging up the past, you do not have to live with it, he does.

I do not always agree with Kennedy but I wish him well.

Laura Bush killed someone while drunk? This is the first I have heard of it and since it never came up in either election I will bet that a great deal was done to cover it up. Where is all the hate filled venom for her?

You republicans are amusing. I guess it's understandable that you'd pile on and attack Kennedy, given the chance, bringing up all kinds of ancient history. Otherwise, you might have to take a good look at that buffoon you put in the White House and the fact that he's universally hated all around the world. The havoc he has created will take decades to be undone, but sure, keep bashing Kennedy. Mmhmm.

I read a book on Laura Bush awhile back and she did run over a guy and kill him. A guy she went to school with in her home town. I wonder why that was never brought out in the news media?

She stayed there like any citizen would UNLIKE THE FAT BASTARD COWARD YOU ARE DEFENDING.

Mary Jo, possibly could have been saved if he didn't run, but give him his mulligan, that's fine, he will pay for his mistake someday.

Laura Bush ran a stop sign and killed her boyfriend, Michael Douglas, in 1963.

We Republicans tend to forget that and instead want to just heap hate upon Ted Kennedy.

Excuse me, but I have to get back to the Rush Limbaugh show and have a good communal cry over Al Gore winning a Nobel Peace Prize.

Doesn’t the Bible say something about forgiving people? I guess the Republicans skipped that part just the way they skipped the 1st amendment, the part that says that their shall be no law made respecting the establishment of religion. Oh yeah, and Sen. Kennedy may have been responsible for one persons death decades ago but President Cheney is responsible for thousands of deaths, including more than one a day. Republicans need to stop being the biggest hypocrites on the face of the earth.

Kennedy did nothing to save Ms. Kopeckne's life, he was drunk and thought only of his political future and never even got wet trying to help her from drowning. Never reported it to police, called his political handlers and bribers instead. Bush had an unfortunate auto accident and did NOT TRY TO HIDE any responsibility or bribe anyone and my guess is she truly suffers for this accident, while Kennedy looks at his own selfish well being as being most important. I hope the old bugger(er),(and relative to the illegal rum running father, immorale cousin, immoral brother) suffers and dies and God sends him to where he belongs.
