New York Sen. Hillary Clinton edged past Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama in third-quarter fundraising.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrat Hillary Clinton has pulled ahead of rival Barack Obama at the bank as well as in the polls and both continue to crush Republicans in the money race.

Clinton holds nearly $35 million three months before the voting starts, to Obama's $32 million.

The Republican money leader, Rudy Giuliani, reported $11.6 million in the bank for the primaries.

Dear Lord - I hope she uses some of that $35 million to improve her looks!

Ouch, honey, you're looking pretty old.

Leo, VA   October 17th, 2007 5:43 pm ET

I am very surprised that CNN allows comments written with hateful tone and dirty language. Don't you have a moderator? Its just about maintaining some level of decency on your website.

Seam, Philly PA   October 17th, 2007 12:15 pm ET

Just imagine if Obama accepted special interest money…..he would dominate Clinton in fundraising.

ronnie - knoxville   October 17th, 2007 2:00 am ET

i'm going to have nightmares about that picture

pam Eugene, OR   October 16th, 2007 9:48 pm ET

OMG!
Shrillary must be really upset about that picture of her. That is fair and balanced CNN. You prop her up with the story and knock her down with the photo. Doesn't she look like the old hag she is?
I like it!

Stan, Peoria, IL, People donated to Hillary, because she is worthier than money. If she listen to you, she couldn't campaign, then she doesn't need your vote. Did you tell your idea to Obama?

Henry Tucker, GA   October 16th, 2007 7:48 pm ET

What is a picture of Madeline Albright doing on this article??

OMG - that's Hillary??

Coach Haughton NH   October 16th, 2007 6:58 pm ET

Why is this the only news outlet that doesn't report their cash on for the primary as almost exactly the same?

steve Loudon, TN   October 16th, 2007 6:19 pm ET

what an ugly witch….ugh

anon, new york, NY   October 16th, 2007 5:52 pm ET

I anticipate that, at the next election day, the republican voters will be demoralised with Hillary's lead in polls over the republican nominee, and they won't bother to vote.

Joanne, Joliet, IL   October 16th, 2007 5:27 pm ET

For the Obama supporters~~ something that bothers me about him~~ he seems to be playing the "black" card big time. Did he forget that his Mother was white & half his relatives are white. I wonder if he didn't play the black card so much if Oprah would be such a big supporter. I actually lost all respect for her over this. I think she finally has shown that she really is a racist herself. I've heard stories about her over the years being very anti-white, but kind of put it out of my mind. Now I think maybe there was somethere there afterall.

Betty, Dallas, Texas   October 16th, 2007 5:21 pm ET

Now the rest of my comment….
Well, she got the legal limit from me and the legal limit from my husband. That's not exactly millions :-) but we did what we could.
And we're not lobbyists… just voters.

Betty, Dallas, Texas   October 16th, 2007 5:18 pm ET

Geezus, CNN, is that the best picture you could come up with? Or is there a reason you chose to use that one?

John,miami,florida   October 16th, 2007 4:05 pm ET

Botox for hillary! You are hiding your wrickles the way you hide lobbyist. Well, you might get suprised at the end of the day! Just try keeping it real for now!

Lance in Monrovia CA   October 16th, 2007 4:00 pm ET

Barack Obama is the first honest leader that I've seen in my lifetime. He backs up his words with consistant actions. He's passed more legislation, including meaningful ethics reform, he's passed more bipartisan bills, he's brought out more individual donors than any other candidate in history.

yet, all we get is "Hillary makes 35 million!" Barack actually outpaced her by 12 million dollars in the race totals. Without taking PAC money he will remain competititve in all 50 states, something no anti-establishment candidate has ever managed to do before.

I am heartsick at the media's strange desire to coronate the Wicked Witch of The West in that photo as some sort of savior of the Democratic Party.

Guess what all you Dems that are supporting Hillary, Karl Rove, George Bush, and the eventual Republican nominee are laughing all the way to the oil fields and back if you choose her as the nominee. They attack her because they're trying to create the impression of her as the nominee, not because they're scared of her.

If they were scared, they'd remain silent, as they did with Edwards in 04 and as they're doing now to Obama.

There is no way they can compete with Obama, so they'll prop Hillary up to knock her down.

Coach Haughton NH   October 16th, 2007 3:53 pm ET

If Barack took PAC money he'd be cushing her. Look at her total. Over 10million.

anon, new york, NY   October 16th, 2007 3:49 pm ET

I am sick and tired of this Idiot being on news every turn on my way. I want real news. I think cnn is campaining for her. They are putting Obama on a blackout…

Posted By Amos,baltimore,md : October 16, 2007 10:30 am

Well, you must be Hussein Obama's supporter. You remind me of some people complaining about The Sports Newwork kept broadcasting Tiger Woods playing golf, and hardly anybody else, in PGA tournaments.

You have to know that Tiger Woods got all the TV foucs because he was #1 in golf, and winning that day! Who cares about the golfer who is 10 over par?

Ditto for Hillary & Obama.

Wang AZ   October 16th, 2007 3:48 pm ET

35 million … a number to match the wrinkles on her old face.

slimegreen   October 16th, 2007 3:48 pm ET

Have you seen her house? Green certainly isn't her color when it comes to producing CO2. HillBillary and the Gore's are the two single biggest contributors to global warming. Get rid of them and we've already accomplished drastic cut backs..

Today's Huffington Post (www.Huffingtonpost.com) has a great article by Dave "Mudcat" Saunders regarding Hillary Clinton and her (non) position on issues that really matter (which is what CNN would never write).

Lance in Monrovia CA   October 16th, 2007 3:08 pm ET

Obama has an equal amount of money to compete in every single primary in the nation. All Hillary has is name value, but nothing else. Obama has charisma, better ideas, more common sense judgement, more time in elected office, and frankly, I believe him when he speaks.

Hillary… eh, not so much.

Maybe that's why Bill Clinton's new book is tanking, people are just tired of the same old thing and no matter how much money you throw into advertising, a bad product is still a bad product.

C.LyOns, New York, NY   October 16th, 2007 2:53 pm ET

Why can't people recognize that Hillary is running a fantastic campaign and congratulate her on it. What's going to happen when she becomes the nominee?

–A low election turnout…

lavelle Rochester,ny   October 16th, 2007 2:34 pm ET

What CNN fails to mention as well is that they both carry debted amounts on there figures. And for total amount of campaing dollars they are both tied! Look it up

J, DE   October 16th, 2007 2:32 pm ET

Ok not a fan of her and I know CNN has a liberal bias but really the Obama people need to give it a rest. Every story about her has person after person saying "CNN tell this about obama". If they did that then people would complain that they were supporting him. The reality of the matter is they report this because it is the top amount raised and it is huge compared to previous years. Obamas amount was highlighted with Clinton's in another story as well. And what about all the other candidates…..who are really never mentioned. They deserve a story more then obama. The fact of the matter is that this is a new agency yes, but they cater to the audience and people care less about candidates that are lower in the polls (which obama is nationally). People love to hate Hilary so stories about her get more coverage because people are more likely to listen. It is like when every one says they hate the way news agency reported on the Paris Hilton crap but the ratings did not drop, they went up and more people took the time to sound off as well. If you hate the way they highlight her campaign then don't read the wed site, watch the station, or post on blogs.

Reatte Beaumont, Texas   October 16th, 2007 2:21 pm ET

Hope that the ones that want her to president have enough money to be able to pay the taxes that she plans on putting on the middle class to pay for all her stupid ideas from giving every child born 5000 to health care and I'm sure there will be lots more before election day so hope you have alot of money stashed away for the democrat dummies

John, Waukesha, WI   October 16th, 2007 2:20 pm ET

It makes me sick that they will use this money to deface, insult and lie about people. You want to make a statement….Donate it to the less fortunate, homeless, dying, hungry people of this world. The hate you will speak or lies you will tell, only bring this country further down the path of the immoral and unethical action your husband lived when he was in the white house. Turn away from your sin and be saved.

Maddoxx, NY, NY   October 16th, 2007 2:00 pm ET

Go Hill, Go Hill….!!!!!.

Madame President is laughing all the way to the bank, sorry I meant to the White House, sorry again I meant to both the bank and White House.

I culdn't be any happier for this star and confirmed President of the USA. I pray for her everyday and I get answered as well as assurance each day by her progress

Bob   October 16th, 2007 1:56 pm ET

Hey CNN are you going to report on Hillarys latest scandal? Illegally listening to phone conversations … my that sounds bad.

If a Republican would have been accused of this CNN would have devoted three hours of detailed coverage.

Let be Fair and Balanced guys! This is partisanship by OMISSION.

Lance in Monrovia CA   October 16th, 2007 1:54 pm ET

It is incredible that Obama is evenly matched for Hillary in terms of money. He's the first outside the establishment in History to outpace the establishment candidate two out of three quarters. He's got more individual donors than anyone in history. He has enough money to compete with Clinton's corporate lobby machine through every state in the union.

All Hillary has is name recognition. With Obama's money from every day americans in place, he can erase that advantage easily. This is gonna get good folks, and it all benefits us, the American People.

I look forward to Barack Obama being the first "Community Activist" President. keep on walking the streets!

Michael Chlanda, St. Louis, Missouri   October 16th, 2007 1:35 pm ET

Politics is money. They all raise it. They all get money from (in some cases) nefarious sources. The best politics money can buy. SO what else is new?
In the end, it's part of the reason most people are cynical and perhaps a major reason why people don't vote. Perhaps, instead of God? Bless America it should be God? Help America.

Kim, Sacramento, CA   October 16th, 2007 1:11 pm ET

Let's tell the real story. The real story is that Hillary has raised this much money with the majority of it coming from lobbyists, big business and others capable of huge donations that Barack Obama does not accept donations from. ALL of Barack Obama's money has been raised by accepting donations from THE PEOPLE and the average donation is $209 per person, giving these people a lot more room to donate. Whereas Mrs. Clinton's donors are mostly $2,300 and $4,600 donors.

The real story here is that Barack Obama continues to be the candidate of the people while Hillary Clinton is the candidate of big business and lobbyists. Hmmmmm, who do I want as President? Someone who is going to represent me or someone who is going to represent the establishment.

Obama '08 all the way, thank you!

Dave, Cheverly, MD   October 16th, 2007 12:51 pm ET

On this CNN page Clinton is highlighted 30 times. Obama highlited 15. Just half of the references. WHY?Clinton has 3 times as many Headline/ picture articles hear WHY? Oh yeh I forgot, cause CNN is keeping it honest…??

Bob, Seattle, WA   October 16th, 2007 12:38 pm ET

Just a measure for Democratic venom. Funny how issues take second seat to the 'I hate Bush'ies. Personal venom will always get more of a rise out of the folks than issues which are always rationalized that somebody else will take care of them. Does anybody remember that Bill Clinton caused the biggest first divide in this country between the Red and the Blue. His false wife can only keep ADDING to the extreme hate in this cycle of partisan politics. Really. America may have a chance, but it clearly will be behind the 8 ball if another Clinton continues this awful cycle. She VERY CLEARLY can NOT unite the people. America NEEDS to be united. ANYBODY but Clinton will give us a better chance than will the PROVEN divider. Give America a chance. Vote for anybody but Clinton. Anybody. Please.

Harry D, FL   October 16th, 2007 12:31 pm ET

It will be a living hell and pure agony for Clinton Hatemongers when Hillary is inaugurated in Jan.2009. GET USE TO IT. IT IS A FAIT ACCOMPLI.

Susan, Fort Pierce, Florida   October 16th, 2007 12:11 pm ET

The level of jealous rage from the Republican post is so interesting! I love it how they talk about special interest with such rage but don't mention that Bush and the Republicans brought it to a new level. Remember the "K" street gang!! What a bunch of idiots!

Adam,Clarkston,MI   October 16th, 2007 12:01 pm ET

I think that it is sad that who ever has the most money gets to buy the office. Does anyone think that this is what the forefathers intended?

Steve Wittlake Blaine Washington   October 16th, 2007 11:41 am ET

After 16 years of Bushs why would people want 16 years of Clintons. People are tired of both Republican
and Democrat lies and their crooked politics. There are other people in this country other than the lobboyists and their rich employers after everything they can get from the government to benefit them with the help of crooked politicians after campaign contributions. Time for a third party made up of of politicians who care about people instead of how much money they can get from the rich and their lobbyists.

Michael Torrance, CA   October 16th, 2007 11:11 am ET

The amounts are stagering this early in the race. I also agree with LoooseyGoosey, nice pictue Hillary.

What's left for Hillary's detractors other than carping and slinging childish and spurious insinuations?
Not much, based on this thread…

TR in Wallingford, CT   October 16th, 2007 11:03 am ET

Hillary takes money from lobbyists and PAC's. Obama doesn't take that kind of money and he has just three million less.

Q. Christian Atlanta GA   October 16th, 2007 10:57 am ET

Why can't people recognize that Hillary is running a fantastic campaign and congratulate her on it. What's going to happen when she becomes the nominee? Will you all be so bitter that your candidate didn't win you will not support her in the general election? If that's the case let's just skip through all this and give the Presidency to Guiliani.

It's really time that you got behind this woman. She is not a liar she is not a thief she is not a charlatan. She is a woman that knows what she is doing and wants to work for the American people. When did this become a bad thing.

Lars   October 16th, 2007 10:55 am ET

If you look under Hillary's Political profile in CNN you will notice that EVERY highlighted supporter is an actor or actress. This should be alarming. No politicians or businessmen. I know she has some of thier support, but they aren't noted as financial supporters. This should be a red flag. If Hollywood supports Hillary, it's becasue she shares thier values, or the lack there of! She may be getting money, but it's from the the liberals in Hollywood that don't share the views of the average American. $35 million dollars has been thrown to the wolves!

Pete, Washington   October 16th, 2007 10:37 am ET

How much of that money came from people like Norman Hsu?…How much of that money came from Washington lobbyists, PAC's, Drug and Insurance companies, 'bundlers' and sleazy people?…Does America care that so much of our legislation is influenced by these special interest groups?..Does America care whether Hillary proudly and openly, takes tons of money from these people?….The answer to both of these two questions can be found in the the most recent polls…Hillary is way ahead, so it is obvious that America doesn't care that she, and our country, can be 'SOLD" to those who put their own interests ahead of the interests of the American people. Shame on us !!!

Amos,baltimore,md   October 16th, 2007 10:30 am ET

I am sick and tired of this Idiot being on news every turn on my way. I want real news. I think cnn is campaining for her. They are putting Obama on a blackout and puting headlines that don't seem right to me. What a country? This is a tactic that seem so wrong and how America is driven by a few. This country is not for all as they say. I want real news and well balanced!

Caroline TRUTH Woodbury, MN   October 16th, 2007 10:27 am ET

The real story is that $10Million of Hillary's $35M was raised during her SENATE campaign.

She did not raise that during the Presidential primaries.

The significant truth is that Obama has outRAISED Clinton during these Primaries and he only announced in January.

Clinton is DOWN 25M to Baracks $32Million.

CNN…how about reporting ALL the facts???

mary, san antonio, tx   October 16th, 2007 10:25 am ET

Does anyone wonder where all the dollers come from and who she will owe if, God forbid, she is elected? I have a problem with all of the candidates making all this money because it I then wonder who they will owe favors to.

Stephen   October 16th, 2007 10:23 am ET

How about staying they both have about $32M Cash on hand, H.R. Clinton has some debts that put them at the same amount of money.

Daniel   October 16th, 2007 10:17 am ET

With Clinton's cycle of momentum already giving her a lead in polls, many endorsements she wouldn't otehrwise get, this is one more benefit of being the inevitable frontrunner!

Chris, Middletown, CT   October 16th, 2007 10:15 am ET

Lies cost lots of $$ - I love CNN for non-biased reporting "both continue to crush Republicans in the money race" - hmmmm….not even remotely biased….in the end the country will vote moderate and Giuliani will take 60% of the vote….watch….

LoooseyGoosey   October 16th, 2007 10:13 am ET

A picture is worth a thousand words.
This one for example, explains why Bill strays and why those bigoted foriegn leaders don't bother her..

jeremiah, columbus, ga   October 16th, 2007 10:02 am ET

is there some reason why the dollar amounts for fundraising are so heavily reported? they make it out to seem like the candidate who raises the most money wins the presidency. i understand the need for disclosure because of campaign finance laws and whatnot, but do we, the public, really need to hear about it? i guess the reason is what the other posters have been talking about: corporate, or in this case campaign, machines buying news time to promote their agendas. thanks, cnn.

Stan, Peoria, IL   October 16th, 2007 9:46 am ET

If Hillary really wanted to earn my vote she'd spend that money on something worthwhile. Think how much good all of the presidential hopefuls could do with the money they've raised to "campaign". Do something great with that money and see what kind of pub you get.

Ken, Austin TX   October 16th, 2007 9:37 am ET

I think that it's amazing that Barack Obama is only $3 million behind Hillary…especially with her being so popular, and deemed to win the Democratic nomination with no challenging hurdles. Barack has come in and gave the Clinton camp something to worry about…otherwise they wouldn't be so excited about being $3 million ahead of a candidate that didn't mean anything to them a year ago.

monica, rochester new york   October 16th, 2007 9:32 am ET

I guess CNN thinks we're empty headed ninny's just waiting to be filled with their "wisdom". Hillary and Barack are both doing well and they're statistically equivalent for all intents and purposes from a money perspective. I wish CNN would cut it out!!

Mariella   October 16th, 2007 9:30 am ET

Hillary's political machine keeping herself as a news story! I'm tired of reading this saga! Give us some real news for a change.

CALVIN, GREENVILLE SC   October 16th, 2007 9:23 am ET

A MORE BALANCED HEADLINE WOULD READ THE 30 MILLION DOLLAR CANDIDATES! ITS NOT LIKE SHE HAS AN ENORMOUS FINANCIAL LEAD OVER OBAMA AS THE HEADLINE INDICATES.

Bob, San Francisco, CA   October 16th, 2007 9:04 am ET

Aren't there a bunch of other news items we can discuss besides another marginal item on Hillary Clinton!!?
And I'm not even a Hillary hater, but c'mon!
