Biden snags endorsement from Iowa newspaper

Biden received the endorsement on Saturday.

(CNN)–Sen. Joe Biden, D-Delaware became the first Democrat in the presidential race to receive an endorsement from an Iowa newspaper.

The Storm Lake Times, in Storm Lake, Iowa, announced its endorsement of Biden in Saturday's edition of the paper.

"We have seen all the Democratic presidential candidates, except for two, up close and personal: Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, Barack Obama and Bill Richardson," the paper said Saturday. "Biden is our choice for the nomination for the powerful personal story he shares, for his deep knowledge of international affairs, and for his long record of exemplary service in the United States Senate."

"Biden is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Nobody, including the president, has a firmer grasp of international affairs," the paper went on to say. "That’s what we need right now: Someone who can restore the good name of the United States of America around the world, who can hold the torch lighting the way of liberty and human rights throughout the world. Biden is that man. He says his first order of business will be to shut down Guantanamo Bay prison and quit torturing people."

The paper also made a point to address what they thought were important domestic policies Biden would pursue as president. "And, we need someone who understands civil liberties here at home. Biden says that will be the theme of his inaugural address, if elected," the paper said. "You can’t preach liberty abroad when you’re spying without court orders on your own citizens."

The Biden campaign announced the endorsement in an email release to reporters. “This endorsement makes a powerful case for why Joe Biden is the person best prepared to become President on day one and reflects the growing support among Iowans who are coming to this conclusion after meeting all the candidates,” Luis Navarro, Biden's campaign manager, said in the release.

Biden was scheduled to spend the weekend campaigning in Iowa.

It's almost refreshing to hear about a newspaper that doesn't appear to be concerned about making a difference.

Then why did he authorize the Iraq war?

If Biden is such a good leader and has so much good experience, why didn't he LEAD us in the direction of staying OUT of Iraq and NOT voting for giving this President the authorization to go in Iraq in the first place?? The same goes for Hillary. One can't claim all this good experience on one hand. But then made one of the dumbest and most incorrect vote/decision in our time on the other hand. On day one Biden the US will need a leader that can make the correct vote/decision the first time. One cannot bring back lives just because you think you can change your minds and position afterwards. People are dead because of that vote. Who will die because of the next wrong gutless politically motivated votes you cast? Both Biden and Hillary knew the vote on Iraq was wrong but did it for Political cover.

Biden is a big fat plagiarizing nothing. Apparently that Iowa newspaper has been asleep for 30 years.

If you are serious, and God knows I hope you're not, newspapers have been endorsing candidates for office on their editorial page for as long as there have been newspapers.
The editorial board of a newspaper will endorse local, state and national candidates and print their endorsements at least a few days before the election.
I'm guessing (hoping) that you are new to America or not yet old enough to vote.

Good news. Hopefully more will follow suit.

For all you guys who've already commented... lets get something straight. When most of the candidates voted to authorize the war in Iraq, they were making their decision on bad intelligence. Also, Biden has said that it didn't even cross his mind that the Bush Administration wouldn't have sufficiently planned ahead about what to do in Iraq once Baghdad was taken. This Administration laid off the entire military, fired every single government employee that knew how to run the power, the water and the infrastructure, they disbanded the police force, allowed for massive looting of government buildings, and had no reconstruction plan what-so-ever. I'm pretty sure that every single one of those candidates that authorized this war had no idea that the Bush Administration would be so incompetent. When Biden worked in Bosnia, they planned for two years in advance until they had a feasible and executable post-war scenario ready to be acted out. This President just went in with guns blaring and had no regard for consequence and no plan for the aftermath.

And I love how all of you are so high and mighty about, "Oh – Biden doesn't understand foreign policy cause he authorized the war." What a crock. 94% of the nation was for going to war in Iraq at the time, so that means .5 in ten of you are pretending you knew then what you know now.

Biden is the only one who has a feasible plan to get us out of Iraq. Biden is the only candidate that speaks with authenticity. Biden is the only candidate with a firm understanding of foreign policy. Biden is the only candidate that has the amount of experience needed. When Biden was first elected into the Senate, Hillary was in law school and Barack was 11.

Even though the Iraq war was definitely a mistake, the reason why it's so out of hand is because of the manner in which this administration has executed it. And to pin the aftermath on Hilary, Edwards, or Biden is just plain moronic.

So you all believed that little drone plains would carry Nukes from Iraq to the US and Porter Potties (portable toilets) were Chemical plants?

Why did you not know that and why did you not make sure the bill stated exactly how the after invasion would proceed. ?

NONE of that matters if people DIE for your lack of GOOD Judgment. What’s next we nuke some country cause 94% people think we should.
You as the US Senate are supposed to provide oversight.
Yeah open the gate to let the fox in the chicken coop and later say I did not know that would happen. Biden and Hillary voted for that bill for Political Cover. Just admit it.

George, newspapers endorse candidates all the time, and they are often powerful, say, for example, the endorsement of John Edwards by a large Iowa paper in 04 leading to his second place finish.

In these troubled and dire time we live in, Joe Biden, to me, encompasses all that we desperately need for our nation:

    1) Intelligence
    2) Experience in ALL phases of government
    3) Strength
    4) Respect from world leaders
    5) Diplomacy
    6) Command of issues
    7) Solutions to problems that face our nation
    8) Honesty
    9) Integrity
    10) Respect and trust from his peers
    11) Respect and trust from the people who follow him

Joe Biden certainly meets ALL of the criteria above.

I pray and hope every day that Mr. & Mrs. America, the people of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina know in their hearts, that if we lose Joe Biden, we'll have lost one of the best Presidents our nation will ever have.

Please watch a video I produced to show my support for Senator Biden. If you support him, please send the link below to family and friends, and ask them to do the same.

what if someone that you don't typically think would be a terrisst, someone with no criminal record, someone who is a JS or candian citizen, and not to be racist but someone who is white, gets recruited or paid off by a terrist group, and does a act of terror how could you have prevented that? I understand that it would be a travel nightmare, but I don't want to have another 9/11

terror groups and gangs are horriable. I think we can olny control them but we cannot get rid of them. Fighting has been around since the beginng of time. We presented the idea to the iraqi people. Its not the new iraqi governments fault, its the fact that they have so many different factions with diffenrent beliefs. Each one thinking that they are better then the other. When it comes down to it for a sick and crazy reason its control for the money. If there is any close door meetings between any country and any other terrist groups it needs to stop.

Biden is experienced, intelligent and presidential. American Democrats should wake up from the candy-induced coma of Clinton and the cult of personality around Obama; then take a look at the best-qualified person to pull America out of its nosedive: Joe Biden.

Here's part of a speech Biden gave on September 10, 2001, on why we shouldn't fund a missile defense system:

"We'll have diverted all that money to address the least likely threat, while the real threat comes to this country in the hold of a ship, the belly of a plane, or smuggled into a city in the middle of the night in a vial in a backpack...We don't have, as the testimony showed, a public health infrastructure to deal with the existing pathogens that are around now. We don't have the investment, the capability to identify or deal with an anthrax attack."

Again, this was said on September 10, 2001. I don't know about you, but I'm going to start taking this guy seriously.

Biden is the most qualified to be president. Mike Huckabee is the only decent republican with a shot. Hiallry is running as a frontrunner. Obama is like electing George W Bush again. Am I the only person that realizes he is not prepared and let's face it, this is america. A black will never be president, just like a jew, italian, hispanic, etc.

Biden is the ONLY government official in Washington to have sponsored an amendment to the original defense authorization bill that, were it to have passed, would have placed limits on the President's power to go to war without exhausting all other options beforehand.

If the Biden amendment had been adopted, U.N. weapons inspectors would have had to have found WMD's in Iraq, Saddam refusing to destroy them, before the President could have taken this country off to war. Biden considered the President's rationale suspect, having read the intelligence reports; Clinton did not read the intelligence reports (which revealled that unreliable information had been obtained through torture).

Having done what he could to place sensible limits on the President's power, both Biden and Edwards have called their respective votes on the authorization a mistake and apologized. Clinton refuses to apologize. Apparently, she feels that not reading the intelligence reports provided her with what's called "plausible deniability."
