The top bidder paid over $2 million for a Senate letter slamming Limbaugh.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – What’s the going price for a letter signed by 41 Senate Democrats officially condemning conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh’s recent controversial 'phony soldiers' comments?

$2.1 million, apparently.

That was the winning eBay.com bid Friday for a letter sent to Clear Channel CEO Mark Mays officially calling on him to condemn the comments in question. The letter was written by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and signed by 40 Democratic senators, including White House hopefuls Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Mays refused to condemn the remarks and Limbaugh placed Reid's letter on the popular auction Web site last Friday, pledging to match whatever it fetched and donate it all to The Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation.

When the Ticker first checked in Tuesday, the bidding stood at $50,000 — already a significant price for a standard Senate letter, but ultimately more than $2 million short of what the letter finally fetched Friday.

“The government tried to take away my living, by sending this letter to Mark Mays at Clear Channel and asking him to confer with me about my remarks,” Limbaugh said on his show Friday announcing the winning bid. “Private citizens, of their own accord — without a government mandate, without an Al Gore pledge — responded with creativity, and charity, and a sense of fun.”

Limbaugh identified the winning bidder as Betty Casey, a philanthropist and trustee of the Eugene B. Casey Foundation

“We cannot thank her enough for her support in this, and I am honored, and proud, and happy to be matching her,” Limbaugh said of Casey.

And in a unique twist of fate, Reid took to the Senate floor Friday complimenting Limbaugh for his use of the letter. (Watch Reid on the Senate floor)

“Now, everyone knows that Rush Limbaugh and I don't agree on everything in life and maybe that is kind of an understatement,” Reid said. “But without qualification, Mark Mays, the owner of the network that has Rush Limbaugh, and Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they're auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a worthwhile cause.”

Though Limbaugh made clear he wasn’t ready to bury the hatchet with the Senate’s top Democrat.

“I asked Senator Reid to go on the program and discuss his discussion of me as ‘unpatriotic,’” Limbaugh said on his show Friday after Reid’s speech. “He did not accept my offer to do that, and now has the audacity to climb aboard this, praising the effort, saying that ‘he’ never knew that it would get this kind of money. It got this kind of money because it represents one of the most outrageous abuses of federal power in modern American history, and that is what makes it a collector's item.”

Reid's spokesman Jim Manley later told CNN, "The irony of the situation is that this charity managed to benefit from [Limbaugh's] completely outrageous and offensive comments."

Why is this creature, rush, not in prison for life? Any citizen caught with as many narcotics as this creature would be doing life. As far as I'm concerned he is a criminal and should be living and working in prison until he croaks. Anyone who believes his ravings should die for the good of civilized humanity.

Oh, I have a life, thank you. I just for the life of me cannot understand how so many allegedly intelligent adults can be SO convinced that Rush is right, when the evidence on Media Matters clearly shows that Rush doctored the audio and the transcript of his show, changed his story several times, and the dittoheads accept his story as gospel truth.

It's the dittoheads who need to get a life. A life in which they inderstand what the rest of us know – that Rush Limbaugh is a lying scumbag pill-popping sorry excuse for a human being.

And Sean Hannity and Mark Levin are just as bad. Except for the pills.

And based on the pro-Rush comments I've read connected to this article, I'm PROUD to be a life-long Liberal Democrat.

Wrong. it got that much money because there are stupid people out there with deep pockets. Such as Betty Casey.

And it's not priceless. It's worthless, just like Rush.

For someone who calls himself "RightTighty", you don't seem to be wrapped too tight…..

Mike, RR, VA   October 22nd, 2007 11:13 am ET

Were there no such real "Phony Soldiers", as first mentioned in an earlier ABC program about them, that were propped up by the left then Rush's remarks could be taken as Media Matters wrongly contends. In the context it was made, the remark was correct for the conversation that was at hand. I understood what Rush was referring to and I had not yet heard of that Jesse guy. Even if he had said "All Those phony soldiers" I would still understand to what he was referring. Media Matters took two words and tried to smear Limbaugh. Reid and the others abused their power and tried to "Imus" Rush. Rush turned to tables on all of them. You liberals should bone up on all the facts before you trot out your lies, petty insults and mal-informed comments.

Wayne, Greenville TX   October 22nd, 2007 8:45 am ET

Wayne in TX- full of hate, are we? And if you keep pointing to Media Matters as a source of "facts", you'll never, ever convince anyone of anything.

And that's where the difference is: you rely on a middleman to tell you what Rush "said", while others actually listen to him consistently. Not just for one sound bite, not for just for 3 minutes, but consistently. That's how we know what the true context was. We don't need a Hillary-founded group (by her admission) to give us 3 minutes of a show that's on for 900 minutes a week.

But keep it up with the drug references and the admitted parodies about Rush. It's fun to see you grasp at unrelated straws on this.

Posted By DT Wisconsin : October 20, 2007 12:53 pm

Nope – full of facts. Facts that were verified by a third party – Media Matters. Everything on their web site has been verified and can be proved accurate, which is more than can be said about Rush.

And not everyone can listen to Limbaugh's complete show. I can't because where I work we can't have radios and we're not allowed to audio stream over the company's computer system. The only time I hear Rush is going home at lunchtime to care for my disabled wife. And I happened to hear that portion of his show on September 26 when he made the "phony soldiers" comment and I know for a FACT that re was not referring to Jesse MacBeth in particular, but all soldiers who oppose the war in general. Why do you think he said "soldiers", if he was referring to only one person?

You dittoheads are the ones who are grasping at straws defending this scumbag. The only parody around here is Rush himself – he's a parody of a human being.

In closing, here's one more fact that you'll never hear Rush talk about. When he was working as a DJ in Pittsburgh in teh /70s under the pseudonym "Jeff Christie", he was arrested one night in an area known for homosexual activity, in the company of a known male prostitute. I think that says a lot about why Rush has been married and divorced three times, and is childless. He is obviously a closeted homosexual who used his ex-wives to cover up his true sexual identity.

Wayne, Greenville TX   October 22nd, 2007 8:35 am ET

Wayne from Greenville – you are an ignorant man clueless about the world. Unlike you, I get my information from the source instead of jokes like CNN, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NBC and the other 30 liberal news outlets out there. I happened to be listening to the show and what was edited out was the caller rambling on about WMD. What was cut had nothing to do with the disgraceful soldiers who make up lies about our military. Get a f#^k*9g life and do your own research, loser.

Posted By Clint, Tulsa, OK : October 19, 2007 7:53 pm
By your own admission, Clint, what intervened between Limbaugh's "phony soldier" comment and his "clarification" was about another subject entirely. Therefore they aren't connected at all, regardless of what you and the other brain-dead dittoheads say.

I can't listen to all of Rush's show because I HAVE A JOB and am working during the time he's on. The only part of his show I can hear is when I go home each day at lunchtine to care for my disabled wife. I probably have forgotten more than you've ever known, Clint, if all you can do is defend that useless scumbag, Rush Limbaugh.

I HAVE a life, Clint. Unlike true losers such as yourself.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   October 21st, 2007 10:53 pm ET

Charles, San Antonio Texas :

So free speech is there just for people like Limbaugh? You say the whole thing was smear on Limbaugh and the same could be said of Moveon. If the US congress is going to start to condemen people for their opinion, it should be across the spectrum you stupid. I guess that's exactly the reason why legislators should stay away from condemning anybody for their opinion. Atleast Moveon just said that about one guy, what Limbaugh said was about a whole lot of vetrans who are against this war.

Charles, San Antonio Texas   October 21st, 2007 7:19 pm ET

Matthew Hensley:

Respectfully, you do not understand the distinction between the two letters. MoveOn smeared the General and deserved bipartisan rebuke. The letter sent to Clear Channel was based on a partisan lie and thus a smear of Limbaugh. I appreciate your patrioyism no matter how it manifests itself.

PJP, Kirksville, MO   October 21st, 2007 4:55 pm ET

As I understand it, a personal communication is copyrighted by the writer/signer of that communication, and the recipinthas no right to sell or otherwise gain from it without permission from the copyright holder. Is it possible that this is not the case for official letters from Senators? I don't know. Also, is that why Rush will donate to charigy? Again, Idon't know. Surely eBay is more awae of the laws that I am.

Matthew Hensley - Laurinburg, NC   October 21st, 2007 3:42 pm ET

While I agree that Rush was wrong for what he said and deserved to be called out for it, at the same time, I don't see how Democrats in the Senate thought a letter could derail the legions of Rush fanatics that worship him and will support his every word.

Rush's countermove was quite brilliant, and now the $2.1 million he's saving from being off prescription pain killers is going to a good cause.

I would like to see Rush be responsible and admit he made a mistake, but as that is doubtful, I will do the only patriotic thing I can and not watch or listen to his programs.

At the same time, I do not think Congress should be condemning the acts of private businesses and individuals. What Limbaugh and Moveon.org did were well within their first amendment rights and when we have a Congress that actively opposes the right to free speech when important duties they are charged with are going unfulfilled, it seems somewhere between counterproductive and unconstitutional. Both sides of the aisle are fishing for votes, which is why professional politicians are the least able to serve our country but the most likely to be elected for such a task.

Karthik Thirumalai   October 21st, 2007 2:11 pm ET

James W, Hanau, Germany:

You are the ones filled with so much hate, you can't see the problem. Did you open your ignorant mouth when Moveon, a private advocacy group were condemned by the Senate and Congress? Good, maybe this will be out of the headlines now: Reid, the whining idiot, arguing with Limbaugh, the loud-mouthed idiot. Good thing a worthwhile cause will benefit. Reid is despicable and so is Rush. They are both too divisive and do our country no good overall as a whole.

i must admit . rush is good . he managed to defend draft dodgers running this country as patriotic heroes . while swift boating kerry who DID fight and win medals in the vietnam war .
he managed to turn the sad situation of drug addiction into a witch hunt demonizing helpless iil people .all you rightists felt good when he slammed the druggies . yet rush himself is a drug addict . rush went 2 steps farther than most heroin addicts , he cashed fake scripts . he got multiple doctors to supply him with multiple prescriptions for the same ailment ,so he commits 2 or more felonies ever day . as i said he is good .

rush has managed to somehow paint wanting to cover our wee ones with health care as a terrible crime .
rush has managed to make anyone trying to alleviate the energy crisis as un american . like million's of barrels of
saved oil is a bad thing ? yes i forgot .solar power and wind turbines are really a red plot . fighting and dying for oil is red white and blue .
our young dying in a civil war in a far distant land makes more sense than spending oil dollars in the USA .

question for all you rush boys . the senate writes two letters denouncing move on .org and rush .
why is one ok and one letter not ok ??
both are free speech no ???
both speak about anothers use of free speech ,

silly me .i thought our boys were dying to defend the right of free speech .

The comment Posted By Harry, NY, NY : October 20, 2007 10:10 pm is exactly correct. Over 20 million listeners that listen to his show know this.

You libs keep talking about a Media Matters audio that is longer than Rush's version. Do you know how easy it is to stretch audio, without the listener knowing it's been stretched, with simple freeware like Audacity? You take the word of an organisation that a politician (Hillary Clinton) helped start…an organisation that's suppose to be non-partisan?

Your defense of this blatant abuse of power by a major political party by calling Rush names says a lot more about you than it does about Rush. Are you so blind in your hate that you can not recognize a much larger problem?

A major political party is working hand-in-hand with the MSM to attempt to destroy a private citizen. Let's say they are successful…who's to say you libs aren't next when the Dems get into power, and then try to shut you up when you realize you've been duped?

Gratifying that forty – one Democratic senators listen to Rush Limbaugh. I mean, they must have heard the program to be in a position to condemn it, right? Or is another "Hillary" – "I voted for the war but didn't bother reading the intelligence briefs."

Jay, Washington, DC   October 21st, 2007 12:03 am ET

I have no respect for Rush to begin with. However, considering that the Mouth That Roared never put on the uniform of his beloved country, I think he has lost the moral right to castigate anyone's patriotism, or to call anyone in uniform a "phony soldier." Of course, the same can be said of O,Reilly, Hannity, and most other loudmouths of the Right.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   October 20th, 2007 11:54 pm ET

Will Rush be apologizing anytime soon for the obnoxious, and false, attacks on Chelsea Clinton?

Will Rush address the oxycontin issue?

Will Rush discuss his "actions" in the Dominican Republic involving behavior with young boys?

I didn't think so!

But, he's a big, brave, chest-thumping "Amurican" when he attacks former soldiers in Iraq, who unlike Rush, can actaully spek from experience in the battle theater.

As we all know Rush had a bad case of malfunctioning dingle berries which kept him from slaughtering for America.

Ron Nebraska   October 20th, 2007 11:03 pm ET

Yes, Rush is a great, patriotic, supporter of anyone in a military uniform. Except for military members who happen to disagree with him. Of course Rush did not see fit to serve when his opportunity arose, but then maybe the military did not have a uniform that would fit his fighting form.

Harry, NY, NY   October 20th, 2007 10:10 pm ET

Hey Kevin, Austin, TX…. I also heard the original show, live, and have read through the transcript. One thing you happened to conveniently forget. The first caller, the 'so-called' Republican, was a seminar caller. Someone like you. They call just to be combative and Rush instructed his screeners to let them through on occasion. The staff knew who they were and Rush used to talk to them for amusement. He has decided to no longer amuse himself with known idiots.
Mike in Chicago said "They pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and spout to the media." referring to the multiplefake soldiers, propped up by the left, who lie about their service. Rush says "Phony soldiers." referring to the previous soldiers that he did a morning update on the DAY BEFORE. Lots of soldiers…one of which happens to be Jessie MB. While Mike in Chicago changes the topic to WMD's, Rush is talking to his call screeners/producer and grabbing things off the printer, only half listening to the caller. It's all right there on the video. Rush edited the transcript to leave out the off-topic stuff that had nothing to do with soldiers. He explained it on his show, and he explained it again on a Fox News interview. There was absolutely nothing in that edited part that had anything to do with soldiers. But of course you crazies jump on the fact that it's *GASP* edited, and away you go. Regardless if it's relevant or not. You say the simple fact that it's edited means he's a liar. How much more First Grade can you get??
Might wanna get your story straight there, Mr. All Knowing Kevin. When you compare Rush's past history of support for anyone in uniform, no matter their political views, this smear is ridiculous. You prefer to believe the MediaMatters lie, so you scrounge any and all excuses to condemn him. Either that, or your comprehension skills leave much to be desired.

Mackenzie, Minneapolis, MN   October 20th, 2007 9:43 pm ET

Hey Kevin from Austin, TX:

Just for the record…although Rush did, in fact, co-found and is currently on the board for the Marine and Law Enforcement Charity, a grand total of $4,200,000 WILL be going to military families. It's not like Rush is transferring the $2,100,000 mil from one of his private bank accounts to another.

Oh, and something else for the record…Rush said he had expected the smear letter to go for at least 1 million,(not "a few thousand bucks" like you said. If you EVER actually listened to Rush's show, you would know that. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that Rush donates more money to military families that you probably could earn in a lifetime.

Hey Dumbo-heads,
if you don't believe Rush called American Soldiers who favor withdrawal "phony soldiers", and instead, think he was referring only to Jesse Macbeth (whom Rush actually refers to, later, as a "fake soldier"
why not read the transcript for yourself on Rush's OWN website.
http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_092607/content/01125113.guest.html

No trick… it's HIS website and, by his admission, his words. Read it and pay attention to what you are reading.

A guy calls in and identifies himself as a Republican who has served in the military, and states his position as being against Bush's War, and asks why Rush makes it seem like only Democrats are against this war.
Rush gets all looney and yells at the guy, telling him that he is "NOT A REPUBLICAN". When the guy assures Rush that he IS Republican and served in the military, Rush tries to mock him by saying something childish like, Sure, "and I… used to walk on the moon". Here are excerpts, but nothing taken out of context (again, READ IT YOURSELF on HIS site)

—————
RUSH: Mike in Chicago, welcome to the EIB Network. Hello.

CALLER: Hi, Rush, how you doing today?

RUSH: Fine, sir, thank you.

CALLER: Good. Why is it that you always just accuse the Democrats of being against the war and that there's actually no Republicans that can possibly be against the war?

RUSH: Well, who are these Republicans?…I can't think of who the Republicans are in the anti-war movement.

CALLER: Well, I am a Republican, and I listened to you for a long time, and you're right on a lot of things, but I do believe that we should pull out of Iraq. I don't think it's winnable. I'm not a Democrat, but sometimes you gotta cut the losses. I mean, sometimes you really got to admit you're wrong.

RUSH: Mike, you can't possibly be a Republican.

CALLER: I am.

RUSH: You can't be Republican.

CALLER: Oh, I am definitely Republican.

RUSH: You sound just like a Democrat.

CALLER: I used to be military, okay, and I am a Republican.
RUSH: Right, I know. And I, by the way, used to walk on the moon.
—————–
okay, even though the caller is Republican ex-military, since his view of the war differs from Rush's, Rush feels the need to try to belittle the caller and his opinion by mocking him.

The next caller says he is calling specifically to offer a "retort" to the previous caller… this is important to note, because it tells us that the following conversation is directed to the previous caller and others like him, meaning, Military Personnel who have spoken out in the media against the war.
—————
Another Mike. This one in Olympia, Washington. Welcome to the EIB Network. Hello.

CALLER: Hi, Rush. Thanks for taking my call.

RUSH: You bet.

CALLER: I have a retort to Mike in Chicago, because I am serving in the American military, in the Army. I've been serving for 14 years, very proudly.

RUSH: Thank you, sir.

CALLER: I'm one of the few that joined the Army to serve my country, I'm proud to say, not for the money or anything like that. What I would like to retort to is that, what these people don't understand, is if we pull out of Iraq right now…."
————–
The 2nd caller and Rush go on to say a few more things about "these people"… again, remember they are talking about the previous caller and others like him… people in the military who speak out against this war. (Oh, stop making that face… it's all on Rush's website, go read the whole thing for yourself!)
———–
RUSH: It's not possible intellectually to follow these people.

CALLER: No, it's not. And what's really funny is they never talk to real soldiers. They pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and spout to the media.

RUSH: The phony soldiers.

CALLER: Phony soldiers.
——————
Did you catch that?
Evidently, this caller and Rush agree that Soldiers who speak to the media, opposing the war, are not what they (2nd caller and Rush) deem "REAL" soldiers, but, in their opinions, are "PHONY" soldiers (Rush's words, folks).

When Rush later got called on this unpatriotic remark, he backpedalled and said he was referring to Macbeth…
however, in this same transcript (GO READ IT), he clearly doesn't mention Macbeth until AFTER the call referring to anti-war soldiers as "phony"… and then he instead calls Macbeth a "FAKE" soldier.
—————-
RUSH: I want to thank you, Mike, for calling. I appreciate it very much.

Here is a Morning Update that we did recently, talking about fake soldiers. This is a story of… Jesse Macbeth.
——————
There, already! Stop blindly defending what this clown is TELLING YOU he said, and go see for yourself what he ACTUALLY SAID, on his OWN WEBSITE.

sigh, but you probably won't… ditto-heads don't like to think for themselves… they might have to face the truth, and that's just too scary.
Right, Right?

Oh, and something else for the record… Rush is no saint for "donating" $2 million to a foundation he co-founded and serves as a board director… He offered to match the winning bid, but I'm sure he thought it would be no more than a few thousand bucks. I guess he could always say he never made that offer… at least his fan-base would believe him.

It is too funny to read the liberal Democrats opinions. First half of them just attack Rush. (WHY?) Then second have of them rant about something that isn't even about this article. I guess the truth about Reid hurts! I just hope that Hillary gets the nomination and gets asked why she signed the letter. I would like to see her get outside of her box of familiar and staged questions. She will lose her cool. Hey Al Gore should run for president as an independant just to piss off Hillary. I mean you always hear that they are not the best of friends. Come on CNN try harder to be fair and balanced! It won't kill you-besides Soros isn't paying your salaries!

Eileen Brunwasser, Philadelphia, PA   October 20th, 2007 4:30 pm ET

I don't understand. Limbaugh was referring to people who lie and say that they served in the US military. Why isn't this made clear in this piece and why is Reid's spokesman still acting like that wasn't the case? This is creepy journalism and politics.

Antonio, Tempe AZ   October 20th, 2007 4:01 pm ET

It's good to see so many true patriot ditto-heads on one forum. I ask them to follow in Rush Limbaugh's heroic footsteps and enlist in the army

http://www.goarmy.com/contact/find_a_recruiter.jsp?hmref=cs

so that we can fill the army with the bravest americans, Rush Limbaugh listeners. Also, Limbaugh listeners know that everything is going splendidly in Iraq and the soldiers are all quite happy to be there so they should have no problem signing up for the Army in droves.

Rush has 13.5 million weekly listeners. If we assume that every single one of our 2.5 million active and reserve soldiers is already a listener that leaves 11 million true patriots to recruit from. If just one in ten Rush listeners are in shape for the military we can double the size of our active duty forces which will be crucial for fighting all the wars espoused by America's Greatest Patriot, Limbaugh.

So type in your zip code and find the nearest recruiting center dittoheads! Iran isn't invading itself.

Ray, Rochester   October 20th, 2007 3:42 pm ET

I have to laugh at all of you conspiracy lovers…"Rush doctored the tape!!!" "the truth will come out!!!"

Uh huh…and Bush and Cheney flew the planes that crashed into the twin towers on 9/11. Yep, their clones are running the country using brains implanted by Halliburon.

Get lives losers.

John Chamberlain Sturgis, SD   October 20th, 2007 3:30 pm ET

Limbaugh should understand that his run as a top radio freak is coming to an end. It's time for intellectuals to replace the voices that pollute the airwaves passing through Americas atmosphere. Americans are smarter than to fall for this phoney persona developed by a minority of loud mouths, not intellects.

Bill, San Antonio Texas   October 20th, 2007 3:28 pm ET

Limbaugh stuffs Reid like a turkey, MoveOn.org gets spanked like a step child, Pelosi rebukes Stark while Cindy Sheehan throws rocks at her and Bill Mahr has to kick his own audience's butt out the door. I love it. The Dhimmicrat convention is going to look like the Folsom Street Fair on steroids.

Mac, Severn, Md   October 20th, 2007 3:08 pm ET

:)

Shannon, Champlin Mn   October 20th, 2007 3:05 pm ET

I'm reading these posts, and I am shocked that people are defending Rush. He makes fun of people with Parkinsans, the other day, he mocked a 12 year old boy by making fun of the way he talked, the same boy who has a parazlized vocal cord, he says racist and sexist things, and contrary to what people say here, he did insult the troops serving in Iraq who do not agree with him. He did remover 1:35 minutes from the original transcript. The first thing as a parent that I tought my daughter was, not to make fun of people. Apparently some of you didn't have the same lesson as a child. Rush is one of the worst examples of a human being I can think of, he is a drug addict, he spreads hate, and he does nothing to make America better. How sad that so many of you defend him, can't you find a better represenative for conservatives than that. Ann Coulter doesn't cut it either, look harder, there has to be someone.

Karthik Thirumalai, Kiamesha NY   October 20th, 2007 2:56 pm ET

Jim Miller – Munster, Indiana :

So all you have to do is start a foundation for the Marines and do whatever the hell you want? That's what you call right-wing stupidity. So what if he is donating matching funds to that organization, he will make that money by making more hate speeches with the attention he got from all of this. The fact that the Military Industrial Complex is fully invested in these kind of arrogant and repungnant right-wingers is to make the money flowing. This is how it works: Stir up the pot for support to start new and phony wars, use the right-wing nut radio to twist facts and use the huge goverment defence-contracts to keep hate going. Good plan and it's been working good in this fear filled environment.

chris chicago   October 20th, 2007 2:32 pm ET

I say. Good for rush he's got a following. Did he ever figure out that the National Debt under the gold standard and the federal reserve means that eventually the entire United States will be trying to figure out how to divide a single dollar bill, while the Pope is sitting on a pile of cash larger than mount Olympus. Get your head out of your anus America.

hahaha…do people still listen to this windbag?

Dixon Benshoof, Des Moines Iowa   October 20th, 2007 2:02 pm ET

Hey John, James and Dale. I spent 8 years listening to the Right wing fanatics spew venom about every little detail of garbage they could find on Clinton/s. You people perfected that skill long ago. Now you have to answer for your parties garbage. To bad, suck it up and understand you never have supported our troops. You supported Haliburton and the oil companies. Our troops have fought and die bravely with substandard equipment since they arrived in that wasteland. Now I here you complaining about Hillary's gift to hippies. A big $1,000,000. So what, how does that compare to the millions spent on our famous bridge to nowhere in Alaska. Our conservative party has more lobbiests a larger government and a huge deficite. All this from the lower the taxes and get the government out of our lives party. Give me a break… I do agree with the education thing. If we had we people in Florida who could count we wouldn't be in this mess today.

Mike, Rotterdam, NY   October 20th, 2007 1:31 pm ET

Buried though it was, thanks for reporting this story CNN, too bad it wasnt mentioned that the auction shut down the almighty ebay for a few moments! And great job to Rush for not backing down to a government that wanted to shut down OUR right to free speech, hopefully a wake-up slap in the face to Harry Reid! What the hell country does he think we live in?? Now maybe we can find a cure for ignorance. Peace.

bruce patras   October 20th, 2007 1:30 pm ET

LOL
all these pelople who avoided the vietnam war were so quick to invovle our yong boys in a clear civil war in iraq . and waste tens of billions of dollars at the same time . now comes rush who railed against herion addicts calling for harsh rprison terms while he himself commited felonies every single day of HIS sad oxy-codine addication.
his phoney soldier remark shows how even his soldier heroes he loves so much will feel his wrath if they cross the lline against bush . you really can't make this stuff up !!

mr rush those boys are dying so you can enjoy free speech .sadly your free speeh helps keep them in harms
way . i can't wait for 08 .

peace bruce

Dixon Benshoof, Des Moines Iowa   October 20th, 2007 1:22 pm ET

He also condemed addicts and people who purchase drugs illegally while he was doing both. Now he condems soldiers for speaking against the war when he hid from his service to our country. Donating the money is another great example of him using others hard work for his gain. Do you really think any of this money will come from his pocket. He is a waste of oxygen…

James, New York City   October 20th, 2007 1:22 pm ET

LOL!!!!
So,The Liberal DEM Leadership Want to support the troops Huh? Hillary changed positions. First the troops will be out right away Then, On another day Mabye, They won't be out quite fast. Koolaid drinkers…..Got to love them. Oh BTW. If Dingy Harry and the rest of the 41 love the troops so much then they would match the bid like Rush did Right lefties? Right? Don't answer all at once. Typical.

John M., Hollywood, CA   October 20th, 2007 1:10 pm ET

1-Left-wing wackos coming out like cockroaches, seaking their garbage, no logic, no facts, only hate.
2-CNN didn't mention Rush matching the bid (only another $2Million + to a worthwhile charity)
3-A model of Politicial abuse, realizing he's wrong, then, suddenly, "jumping on the bandwagon".
From Big John, Hollywood, CA (Oh!, yes, some of us out here do have good sense)

Jason, Denver Colorado   October 20th, 2007 12:54 pm ET

I have read most of these comments and I can't believe the comments from those of you who do not know the truth. Limbaugh did denigrate all the troops only the 'phony ones'. Reid totally made a fool of himself and 40 dem senators followed suit. I ca't believe what is happening in this country with things like this happening on the senate floor. Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Kennedy and Reagan are rolling in they're graves while the rest of the USA is flipping the bill. This is a disgrace! I am ashamed to be a democrat due too the parties hijacking by extreme liberalism.
CNN pull your heads out of your collective backsides and please be neutral and report all the facts!

DT Wisconsin   October 20th, 2007 12:53 pm ET

Jeff Spangler, Arlington, VA   October 20th, 2007 12:44 pm ET

For 2 million you could probably buy a contract on Lardarse Limbaugh and get some peace and quiet for good.

Andrea, St. Louis, MO   October 20th, 2007 12:42 pm ET

First off, this article from CNN fails to mention that the Democrats who opposed what Rush said took his comments out of context. Limbaugh made the comment in response to one soldier who had falsified his service record to say he had served in Iraq when he had not. This man is the "phony soldier" to which Limbaugh is referring. Rush Limbaugh has done nothing but support our soldiers and Reid should apologize for acting completely out of line. Secondly, this article ends with the Democrats getting the last word. How liberal of this website. Again, they don't acknowledge that Reid was WRONG in his interpretation of Limbaugh's comment. Limbaugh's comment was neither outrageous nor offensive. The Democrats and drive-by media should try listening to the whole clip instead of picking the one line they want to hear in order to condemn a man for his free speech.

Ethan, Brooklyn, NY   October 20th, 2007 12:40 pm ET

I checked a bunch of other MSM websites and the only other one that has this as top story is FOX NEWS. Great, CNN, race them to the bottom of the barrel. Good strategy for "the most trusted name in news".

WaPo does have a story (not the top one obv), but at LEAST they mention this:

Limbaugh sits on the board of directors.

Wow, WHAT a charitable guy. He donates money to a charity of which he is on the board.

Every single thing this man does is a disgrace.

ronnie knoxville, tn   October 20th, 2007 12:38 pm ET

people who don't listen to Rush's show latch onto one bit of info, albiet wrong and just go with it. don't let your emotions get the better of you , libs. that's how myths get started. rush limbaugh is a fine person who gives a lot of time and money to the military.

xtina - chicago IL   October 20th, 2007 12:35 pm ET

Thanks for the many comments that give the facts to prove that Rush is a credible, patriotic, great American.

-Rush co-founded the Marine Corps/Law Enforcement Foundation and gives a lot of money to this organization.

-Rush travels to Iraq , Walter Reed and many military installations to support our troops.

-Rush already matched 2.1 million for the Marines and Law Enforcement officers, giving his own money, when the 41 polilticians have given zero.

-Rush agreed that J. Macbeth is a soldier. Because he is.

-ABC news coined the term 'phony soldier'. A caller to Rush's show used the term when Rush agreed with him.

It's afree country and anyone is free to state their own opinions, but these are facts that back up the opinion that Rush is a credible, great American.

Ethan, Brooklyn, NY   October 20th, 2007 12:34 pm ET

HOW is this STILL the top story on the ticker???????????

CNN, you are pathetic.

How about doing a little JOURNALISM every once in a while?

George, Queen Creek Arizona   October 20th, 2007 12:17 pm ET

Harry forgot to take his alzheimer meds again. Nice job Rush. Keep'em all honest. Your still the man!

Russ, Stratford CT   October 20th, 2007 12:13 pm ET

We are in desperate need of a legitimate third party in this country. One that can start with candidates in every national district in this country.

It is wonderful that Rush took this issue and turned it into a positive for the heroic men and women who have served this country

It is sad that our politicians waste their time on the Senate floor trying to knock down a US citizen. There are so many more important issues that require thier time.

Neither party has the courage or conviction to take them on and solve them. They only care about money and power and not what is best for the country.

CNN is just as much to blame trying to bury this news item.

Wayne, Greenville TX   October 20th, 2007 12:11 pm ET

It's hurts to listen to all of you, both from the left and from the right, talking about Iraq, Rush Limbaugh, senators and Congress. Do any of you actually think that your elected representatives be it Republican or Democrat care about the troops or about any of you? They don't. All they care about is power and money and big business. When will all of you stop yelling at each other over who's worse Democrats or Republicans and realize they are all lying scumbags!!! Posted By Mark, St. Louis, Missouri : October 20, 2007 11:41 am

Nothing will get done as long as all the Republicans keep voting in lock-step to protect their war criminal in the White House.

If the Republicans in the House and Senate would vote for the good of the country and not the good of their party, we'd get things accomplished. But with right-wing cheerleaders like Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, and the others egging them on, they will keep up their obstructionist ways.

The only solution is to Vote Democratic next year, and drive all the criminal RepubliKKKans out of office.

Wow. Most of you are completely clueless, and probably have never even listened to Rush's show. The winning bid was for $2,100,000 and Rush is matching it! Rush also asked Senator Reid and the others who signed it to match it too! This is biggest Ebay charity auction EVER! No one seems to mention that! The record before was Jay Leno's Harley for $800,000.

Stefan,Raleigh,NC   October 20th, 2007 12:02 pm ET

Harry Reid must be buddies with flip flop Kerry after he got 40 democrats to sign a letter that basically wanted Limbaugh to get on his knees and say he's sorry. Simple. Telling the truth about Rush Limbaugh and what he says is an attack. He is a known pathological liar, drug abuser, and closeted homosexual who has turned his self-hatrred outward and directed it toward those who disagree with him. And the dittoheads lap it up…..

Igor lampinski, Dallas,NC   October 20th, 2007 11:27 am ET

Finally Rush is doing something good. Even though it was by lie and trickery some one will benefit from it.
He is doing something for the military now in attempt for dodging out because of something on his posterior. Truth be know it was his ear. You can quess where the rest of his head was.
He has done more to this country by spinning the truths and 20,000,000
people (according to him )have fallen for his ingnorance.

Alyssa, Arlington, Texas   October 20th, 2007 11:20 am ET

Rush Limbaugh is a disgusting waste of flesh. The man is an phony as they come. His goals?? They're certainly nothing humanitarian– just designed to promote himself.
The funny thing is that I'll bet you big bucks the $2.1 Mil bid turns out to be a hoax. I'm betting if he works his way down the bidders list, he might eventually get the $50. where it all started.
People– check this man out. He has a history of lying all the way back to his pathetic excuse for avoiding military service. Anal cyst my a–! My husband had an anal cyst & he served. Rush is just a pompous idiot and continues to such you "believers" in over & over & over. I feel sorry for you.

I find it quite fitting that the first Congressional attack against a single individual citizen involves the worst rated Congresss in history, a talk show host and phony soldiers..

Betty has bought herself a pricessless piece of history that contains the signatures of several democratic presidential candidates. Yes, definitely a classic foot-n-mouth display from this pitiful Congress.

But hey, at least Harry can now say his constant partisian ranker has actually accomplished something(finally) good for America. Even if it is the only thing he's accomplished..

To bad Not Bill Gates   October 20th, 2007 11:05 am ET

Has anyone ever thought that the money maybe to force Rush to pay out his pocket. If I was Bill Gates rush would be filing Backruptcy right about now…or lose his honor which he probably doesn't have a problem with.

John Frederick, Stevens Point, WI   October 20th, 2007 11:00 am ET

Why does anyone even listen to this clown anymore? He's a blowhard pundit who gets rich by having people pay attention to him. The Democrats played right into his hands by putting a spotlight on him.

Ironically, Limbaugh's argument here proves exactly why the Iraq war is a fraud. Anyone who dares speak out against it is accused of "not supporting the troops!" But when some of those very troops speak out against it, suddenly we're NOT supposed to care about the troops. And I'll bet my house, my car and every cent I have that the more soldiers who speak out against the war, the more this "Support the Troops!" propaganda will get thrown out the window anyway.

Michael, Houston Texas   October 20th, 2007 10:43 am ET

It is ridiculous and irresponsible to say that about Democrats "their goals in Iraq are the same as the enemy; fully invested in defeat". The Democrats want our soldiers to come home safely as soon as possible and the other side want them to stay and die.

Lew   October 20th, 2007 10:36 am ET

Reid can't shut up when shutting up would do him the most good.
A brief statement on the floor of the senate would have done much more good for Reid than a letter. People forget stupid words but a letter is forever.
Now would be a good time for Reid to write a letter to the major news corporations condemning them for reporting poll results showing congress to have it's lowest approval ever.
What a bunch of losers.

Richard, West Palm Beach, FL   October 20th, 2007 10:34 am ET

Estelle DuBose   October 20th, 2007 10:29 am ET

The Harry Reid letter made this much money because it was not true, abuse of power and because it shows us how the news does not cover the "news" correctly. We have no way to know whom to trust when we hear something. It is a very frustrating time to live and I have lived a long time.

Mark Wilkes Barre PA   October 20th, 2007 10:26 am ET

Bill, Las Cruces, New Mexico   October 20th, 2007 10:15 am ET

Yellow journalism at its best. Headlined as "Attack on Rush". Come on did you forget already what was in play here? Rush's Phony Soldiers comment? and the Democrats response by stealing a page out of the right wing play book and slamming him like the right wing did Moveon.org? Bottom Line – Rush never served in the Military, Rush has (had?) a drug problem, Rush's goal is just to keep the pot stirred and his name at the forefront and on the lips of all his sycophantic "dittoheads". He may wear his flag lapel pin but his view of freedom only extends to those who agree with him, IMESHO and yes the Dallas Cowboys will be greater than they ever were.

Jerry L Tobey Sr   October 20th, 2007 10:14 am ET

Rush is an honest man with integrity.

Dingy Harry Reid is a mobster for the democrat socialist party. He's a union thug as well and has absolutely no speck of integrity. He should be shot as an American traitor or as a snake in an outhouse!

Jim Miller - Munster, Indiana   October 20th, 2007 10:10 am ET

Get a story right for once. Your article doesn't mention the FACT that Rush is matching the 2.1 million dollar final bid, providing 4.2 million to the charity. Your story doesn't mention the FACT that Rush is a co-founder of the charity; the Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation. That's hard to believe isn't it – since Harry Reid accused Rush of being unpatriotic. Your story deosn't mention the FACT that Rush called on Reid and other signatories to match the final bid. These Seantors signed a letter that was the equivalent of stating that the world is flat. This document has become the Democratic Party's "Declaration of Incompetence." The Democrats have been kidnapped by the "moveon.org" fringe, their goals in Iraq are the same as the enemy; fully invested in defeat, afraid of good news from the battle field, and they will say and do anything to get elected. It's only a matter of time now. See you in the streets.

K Hunter, Chicago, IL   October 20th, 2007 9:58 am ET

As usual, the Democrats and the Press either don't check the facts – which is why most of the Press is known as the "drive-by-media," printing only their pre-determined template for every story, then driving off to the next story, to get it wrong, or worse yet, participate in a lie to smear the political opposition. A check of the facts shows Limbaugh never used the term "phony soldiers" to describe veterans opposed to the war, but rather to describe "phony soldiers" like Jesse Macbeth, a real "phony soldier." Hello?? CNN.com still refers to Limbaugh's comments as "controversial remarks," then quotes Senator Reid's spokesman describing Limbaugh's comments as "outrageous and offensive…." The truth is outrageous and offensive? Only to you. Where is the difficulty in getting a story right? Check the tape – check the facts. Limbaugh described a phony soldier as a phony soldier – not real veterans as you and the socialists insist. Drop the liberal / socialist media template and get a story right for once!!!!!!!! Let the revolution begin.

Wayne, GreenvilleTX   October 20th, 2007 9:49 am ET

Right on Rush, I want to thank you on behalf of my relatives who are Marines!

DT Wisconsin   October 20th, 2007 9:38 am ET

Funny thing about the media's relaying of this whole story is that, since there seems to be some confusion on what Rush said (at least by the left), no one in the media bothered to actually ask Rush to explain or clarify his remarks.

You can bet your life the media would be falling over themselves to get a Dem to clarify statements that appear controversial.

Havok   October 20th, 2007 9:33 am ET

Wayne, how could you say that document is worthless? Its not worthless to the families of police and soldiers who serve our country. Grow up.

York Durden   October 20th, 2007 9:29 am ET

Rush lied and edited the audio and the transcript of what he said on the air. Furthermore, he owns the "charity" to which the money will be going.

Right wingers HATE our soldiers and want to see them dead so that they can get richer. Pete Stark had it right. Bush laughs when our boys die. And so does Rush.

Who's the bigger phony, the phony or the phonies who follow him?

Truely, we deserve what we get.

n-do   October 20th, 2007 8:35 am ET

How come Rush didn't donate the 2.1 million before the whole stupid letter hullabaloo?

Ken Saginaw Mich.   October 20th, 2007 8:33 am ET

Well Well Well, I wondered when this liberal publication was finally going to mention this. Dingy Harry has egg on his face, and once again has proven himself to be a total idiot. I am offended that he and the others have time to condem a private citizen while on MY payroll. GO GT 'EM RUSH God Bless you !!

Sherry Dechane, Colchester, CT   October 20th, 2007 8:30 am ET

Whether you like him or hate him ,I believe it's called free speech, which for some reason, people are missing this point. And the senate has taken an oath to serve the American people, not themselves, what do they care what Rush said? Let the people decide,if he was right or wrong.

Jules Santiago NY, NY   October 20th, 2007 8:26 am ET

so if clinton didn't inhale, did rush swallow the oxycontin or was he just freshening his breath?

rush limbaugh contributes nothing to journalism other than malaise. like so many other neocon mouthpieces, he makes a living off of the malleable know-nothings who actually believe his hateful spew. he DOES NOT speak for military people nationwide because my family have served for 3 generations including WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Rush was excused from Vietnam for allegedly having anal cysts.

limbaugh will go down in history with the roy cohn jr's of the world… a stain. forgotten.

Brian Tampa, FL   October 20th, 2007 8:18 am ET

Soldiers fight, conservatives support liberals whine and undermine, nothing new in this story!

Wayne, Greenville, TX   October 20th, 2007 7:58 am ET

Rush Limbaugh is one of the biggest supporters of troops in the media, and for 'Dingy' Harry Reid to try to call Rush out as unpatriotic is stupid and shows he either doesn't know what the majority of Americans know, or he is just pandering to the 11% of America that actually approves of the work that is not getting done on capitol hill. Harry Reid and the Democratic leadership have been looking for every way they can to lose the war, when the troops on the ground are winning. Anyone who takes the word of Media Matters (a far left smear machine) needs to have their head examined. Bravo Rush for serving the 41 Democrats who signed the smear letter a turd sandwich.

Posted By Nestor, Austin, TX : October 19, 2007 7:25 pm

And anyone who looks up to Rush Limbaugh as someone to admire doesn't have enough in their heads to examine. The only one who was smearing was Rush himself, when he called those who served but disagreed with him on the war "phony soldiers" And then lied about it, and convinced all you dittoheads that he was speaking the truth.

Well, here's the real truth for you. Rush Limbaugh is a world-class pathological liar, and he's taken all of you for a ride. And you're all too stupid to realized it. Which is rather sad.

Dave, Norman, Ok   October 20th, 2007 7:43 am ET

What is offensive is the level of stupidity in Harry Reid. What a POS, to first misrepresent what R. L. said, then have the gall to try to attach himself to the charitable act! No wonder Congressmen do their best work in Airport Men's rooms!

RD alabama   October 20th, 2007 7:36 am ET

Way to go Rush. It does not matter if you agree with Rush or not. The whole problem with this picture is 41 Congressmen tried to stop one of our basic rights given to us and that is freedom of speech. They are more worried about their political agenda than solving the real problems in the congess. Maybe that is the reason their political rating is so low. I am afraid some would even sacrifice the security of this great nation for their own political agenda. You 41 congressmen ought to be ashamed.

Phil, Omaha Nebraska   October 20th, 2007 7:34 am ET

Congrats to the charity that will receive the funds! It is my hope that these millions will go to help someone in need. However, Rush is just one more example of how completely clueless the right wing Republican party has become. Although Rush may be popular with the <30% of the country that actually still believe Bush is doing a good job, he continues to remain a joke to the rest of the country. Just as many Republicans that claim to be champions of the high road [Vitter (Anti-prostitution), Craig (anti-gay rights), Reverend Ted Haggard of Colorado (anti-gay rights) just to name a few], the hipocracy that defines Rush Limbaugh becomes more and more comical each day. As if his "legal drug" problems weren't funny enough, the greatest accomplishment is his ability to champion the Defense of Marriage act when he's now been married and divorced 3 times. Rush sure does believe in the sanctity of marriage and that blessed union between a man and a woman. Rush, you are a role model to all of us in Americans when it comes to the sanctity of marriage, and thank God you are fighting to defend that right of men and women like you to make a hipocracy of the sanctity of marriage. I'd have to put you right up there with Brittany Spears when it comes to turning the marriage into a hypocritical joke.

Tony, Enterprise, Alabama   October 20th, 2007 7:24 am ET

Thank God the money is going for a good cause.

Otherwise, there is nothing redeeming about any of this. Rush Limbaugh is a Fascist/Nazi and a racist. He has a right to his opinions, because this is America. But his sponsors, all of them, should suffer financially for supporting him. Just as Krupp and others suffered following WWII for their support of Hitler.

We have President Bush and the Republicans to thank for this new-found attitude in America, that Rush Limbaugh espouse everyday, that it is okay to be a bigot again.

The politics of hate and fear they have used to stay in power has gone too far, now he is picking on a 12 year old.

Shameful.

Chris Mooresville NC   October 20th, 2007 7:19 am ET

Pathetic reporting. The real point here is Harry Reid's SHAMEFUL attempt to garner credit for the money raised when in reality the attack was a sham to begin with and Americans saw right through it. Rush buried Reid – period. Typical democrat garbage – no values and no principles

Chris StJohn, Brookville, OH   October 20th, 2007 7:11 am ET

Gee, are you surprised that CNN or other democrat media stations haven't reported that Rush is matching the donation himself and that no democrats are offering to do the same. Rush is and always will be a friend to the great citizens that are the military.

A. DiOrio, Carmel, NY   October 20th, 2007 7:04 am ET

Rush, how much do you think you can auction off Congressman Stark for? I mean, $2.1 mil for Reid's dopey letter should be peanuts compared to what this 'buffone' did in the Well!

Edward Amaral   October 20th, 2007 7:04 am ET

Once again Rush has illustrated to us all, that the absurd and pitiful actions of Reid solidifies him as a spineless, worthless, and clueless coward. Reid's attempt of taking Rush's comments out of context was the equivalent of spitting in the wind. Good Job Mark Mays for having a backbone and not yielding to the pressure of this dishonest, dispicable excuse of a Senate Majority Leader.

Sam, IA   October 20th, 2007 6:35 am ET

I'm surprised he didn't get more. Rush's followers have the d and f student sect of america covered. You notice the money came from the widow of someone who REALLY worked for a living, PS Rushbo. I'm a vietnam veteran, You and your lemmings served where?

Jack C. Columbus Ohio   October 20th, 2007 6:21 am ET

Actually, Rush is the liar in this case. He doctored the audio from September 26th to delete oveer a minute of his show to make it LOOK like he was talking about one specific soldire (Jesse Macbeth) when he used that "phony soldier" line, when in truth he used that line to smear every soldier that disagrees with Rush's position on the war.

Media Matters picked up on this right away. I'm waiting for the rest of the mainstream media to expose Rush Limbaugh for the liar that he is.

Posted By Wayne, Greenville, TX : October 19, 2007 4:55 pm

I don't typically believe Rush's Dem/liberal conspiracy theories. But since I actually listen to the program to form my own opinion instead of relying on Media Matters to filter it and feed it back to me, I know that's a fabrication.

Great Job diluting the truth Media Matters!

Jack C. Columbus Ohio   October 20th, 2007 6:07 am ET

I wonder why the headline isn't Rush raises 4 million for charity. It certainly can't be that the editors were to busy fact checking to comb the article for bias.

Rob   October 20th, 2007 4:19 am ET

The DNC and Damien LaVera are evil hypocrits and cannot get into the Whitehouse. That would mean doom to the good old USA. Bush sucked for 8 years, but any of the GOP candidates are better than any Democrat.

A regular guy, San Diego CA   October 20th, 2007 4:16 am ET

Oh man, whoever spent that much has way too much money and free time. Just think of all the less frivolous things 2.1M could buy… with some clearer thinking. Many people don't even have the cash to keep their homes right now, and some jerk offs are spending millions to buy a worthless piece of paper. God help us all.

Aaron, San Mateo, CA   October 20th, 2007 4:05 am ET

Limbaugh's offensive statement aside, I find the whole thing amusing. Republicans absolutely love to dish it out, but when the tables are turned they are so quick to play victim. Repubs lable MoveOn as a Dem. shill, and denounce the ad they ran? Fine. Problem is, Rush is just as much a shill for the far right, and his statement was just as offensive as the ad that ran. If the goal of republicans is to be complete hypocrits, then they are succeeding wonderfully.

Lou Dobbs, Plano TX   October 20th, 2007 4:02 am ET

Now why doesn't Rush sell the toilet seat that Larry Craig (poster boy for Republican values) got busted on, to raise even more money for his pet projects?

FITZROY, Omaha, nebraska   October 20th, 2007 3:34 am ET

i dont like people tryong to take away rush's income, that is sad, my friend jesus even said sarcasm is scary, he's afraid of the CIA

Allison, Nashville TN   October 20th, 2007 3:28 am ET

Rush Limbaugh is a lunatic. I am glad that a charity, any charity that benefits those in need are helped by this letter. However, he is the type of person that feeds on publicity and talk. If people would ignore this fame seeking, ridiculous, right-wing drama queen, then we would not have this problem in the first place, and money could be raised in appropriate ways. Unfortunately we are all forced to hear his anti-human comments because we choose to listen to the news and stay informed. People like Rush all have similar attributes, they are afraid of what they do not know and do not understand. Therefore; anything that is "foreign" and "unfamiliar" must be the source of evil and the undoing of our nation. I agree that laws and regulations must be regulated and upheld to maintain a civil and organized nation. However, our great "undoing" is being committed by those who claim to protect and serve the nation because they refuse to see the situation that they " and we" are creating on a daily basis. That is that we are not preparing our youth to become law-abiding and responsible adults. Each day with our "new school regulations" we are teaching the young that they are not responsible for their own actions. That someone else, an adult, will constantly remind and chase after them about what they need and should be doing to succeed in our society. Many students today do not feel that they need to be personally responsible for their own learning. Mom or Dad will see to it that I get "my fair share" and "what is owed to me" so that I can get good grades, get into a good university and make a lot of money because this is what "I deserve" as an American!! This may be shocking to some, but as a whole this is the attitude of students today. I want to know when we stopped teaching hard work and responsibility and started teaching "to take what our are owed"? This is not the teachers fault, nor administration, because they do not have control over their schools! This is government, local and federal who make decisions about what happens in the classroom, without actually stepping into an actual classroom itself. If America wants to improve it's schools, and compete universally with other nations, then we need to stop holding our students' hands and telling them that it will be okay. We need to start motivating them to take responsibility for themselves like it used to be. Looking ahead and changing is wonderful and progression is key, but only so much as it benefits a society, not when it handicaps them.

Rosemary Knuth Lake Mills, WI   October 20th, 2007 3:05 am ET

Oh, Rush, Your'e right. It wasn't just the letter. It's what it represents. But not about H. Reid overstepping his leal boundary. It's about 40 US senators who told a media blowhard to SHUT THE F**K UP! You are disgusting in every way. But, go ahead and keep it up Rush. Keep digging that hole 'cause you need a very big one to fit your big mouth and big ass into.

JAMES, DALLAS, TX   October 20th, 2007 2:34 am ET

Are you sure this isn't a big joke? It's not April Fools Day, so fools, morons, and retards must have taken over the Senate.

1. Who composed the letter? Their parents should get a refund from whatever school they attended.

2. Don't these people have something better to do? I know they hate Rush and obviously would do anything to slander him but to put their name on an official Senate slander document is unbelievable. I don't know if what they did is criminal or just criminally insane but I'm sure Rush's lawyers are busy working on a civil case against the people who used their office to try to damage him.

3. Again, don't these people have something better to do? Is this what the people who elected them thought they were going to do? I hope not, but it does prove you have been suckered again. You thought you were electing senators to help run the country and fix stuff, but they suckered you into voting for them again. In a few years when Social Security is broke, Medicare is broke, the infrastructure is crumbling around you, gangs rule the streets, and Spanish is THE official language, you will probably wonder how things went so wrong. You should not wonder because you did it all by voting for morons.

4. I've had a pretty good rant and I feel better now. I hope you feel better too. I know it must be embarassing to have a Town Idiot for a Senator but you have lots of fellow sufferers. Please promise me one thing. Will you please learn from this experience. If you are embarassed now, just think about much she can embarass you as President – both Her and the First Man.

5. I think I'm finished now. Five is too many. If you agree with me, I wish you gun control (quick draw and steady aim). If you don't agree, I don't care but I hope I've made you go a little nuts and see red. Just in case I haven't made you go crazy yet, this is sure to work.

Doug, St. Petersburg FL   October 20th, 2007 1:04 am ET

Rush has a history of supporting the military so he clearly didn't diss them. He just dissed the military poser. Rush is a genius and generous for giving 2+ mil of his own money to charity. The govt. should not try to beat up on private citizens like in totalitarian regimes.

S/R/P, Toppytown, ME   October 20th, 2007 12:59 am ET

I would hardly call Rush a "private citizen."

And I think we can all forgive Reid if he misheard Mays name and called it "May." President Bush has certainly had plenty of mispronunciations himself.

All of this is just intellectual implosion. Rush said this, so Reid said that. It's like watching two siblings bicker over which one called the other "doody-head." Reid was stupid to react to what Rush said, taking up valuable time away from the business of the people. Rush is stupid to think that he can say anything without some kind of lashing-back by those whom he continually insults, slanders, and skewers.

Even if Rush went off the air, there would be ten more people, ten times as vicious, ready to take his place. The best way to make Rush go away is to make him less relevent, and to make him less relevent, you just stop listening, and stop reacting to what he says. If you don't make him an issue, then he'll eventually become like the crazy man at the edge of town that curses into the wind.

New Bern, North Carolina   October 20th, 2007 12:59 am ET

Karthik Thirumalai   October 20th, 2007 12:55 am ET

What an outrage that Rush Limbaugh gets away with most vile comments, but others are torn to shreds for less offensive comments. Everbody in the right-wing loony radio supported the Senate and Congress condemning Moveon, which is a private advocacy group, but were up in arms for right-wing hate machine.

JiMboB, Santa Cruz, CA   October 20th, 2007 12:49 am ET

Have another Wayne.. Reid ran his mouth like a outta control freight train… shame on him. You really have some sort of condemning evidence regarding Rush? Or do you always talk in riddles..

allen Sacramento, California   October 20th, 2007 12:46 am ET

Based on some of the comments against Limbaugh I can see that Democrats only believe in "free speech" when you SAY WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO SAY.

So much for fake liberal,"we're so open minded" crap.
Obviously they are only open minded if you agree that Bush is satan, Oh wait, liberals don't believe satan because that would mean there is a God.

You people are amusing though !

shane los angeles,Calaifornia   October 20th, 2007 12:37 am ET

Sowell Brooklet GA   October 20th, 2007 12:28 am ET

Once again Harry Reid has managed to waste precious time by taking a partial comment made by Limbaugh and skewing it to suit his misguided and singleminded attempt to besmirch a conservative voice. If he would look at the record for the present congress, he would realize he has better and far more important things to do. The left side of the aisle has one purpose in mind and that is to destroy the Republican party and all members of the Republican party in any way they can and as quickly as they can at the expense of our country's business. And that, friends, is why they have the lowest rating of ANY congress in history. Period!

Steven M. Green, Fairfax Station, VA   October 20th, 2007 12:21 am ET

It is nothing short of alarming that Harry Reid and his 41 Posse have the time to devote to the demolition of this one man! Irrespective of the facts; do they not have anything more important to do? With control of both houses I see very little to show and activities such as this are the primary reason. I am paying you to work NOT act like grade school children!

John Atlanta, GA   October 20th, 2007 12:14 am ET

Rush can barely rip into a package of Oxycotin, much less senator Reid. This story has been turned into a tasteless publicity stunt by the right-wing media giant Clear Channel to cover itself after Limbaugh messed up. Fortunately for Rush and Clear Channel, they've been effectively disinforming their listeners with lies and propaganda for years. Joseph Goebbles would be proud.
From reading the hateful and ignorant posts by Rush's supporters, it's obvious that they also think that Bush is a strong leader, Cheney isn't making millions while our troops are getting killed…a military he always likes to boast about though had five differments to avoid serving in…Halliburton is actually in Iraq to help people, not to control the oil, and we're winning the so-called "War on Terror" ™.
I can understand why Rush and the right hate our soldiers. Rush avoided service himself. His buddy Newt Gingrich also dodged the draft (and both have been married several times: four for Rush, five for Newt. They also have the same reasons for their divorces: they cheated on their wives).
Betty Casey is described as a "philanthropist"? Casey has been "donating" to Rush for years, as well as other 'humanitarian' organizations, like the American Enterprise Institute, the Heritage foundation, and other far right-wing groups.
The letter sent to Clear Channel was to make them accountable (unlike Blackwater murduring innocent Iraqis) for Rush's insensitve comments towards those who actually have served their country, and love their country enough to take a stand (unlike Rush who claimed he could not serve due to 'an anal/rectum condition'). A few years ago Rush decided to boost the morale of our troops serving in Afganistan by dropping by and telling them that there 'were some Americans who wanted them to fail', and hated what they were doing. I wonder if that included those patriots on the right who lied about the WMD's, voted to extend troop deployments, voted to cut the VA funding and military benefits…again…didn't think body armor and enough ammunition were all that important, and are making millions while people are dying, including US troops.
Remember Rush making a fool of himself attacking Michael J. Fox by mocking his Parkinsons? Well, now Rush is attacking a twelve year old boy, mocking him…a kid. Rush and the right keep sinking to new lows. Just like Bush's new low 23% approval rating. There seems to be a connection: Bush becoming more 'lame', Iraq is going down the drain… time for a diversion, bring in the fool, it's Limbaugh time!

Don Jennings, Slatington, Pa   October 20th, 2007 12:13 am ET

I'll second that. Rush Limburger is the worse thing to happen to America since the McCarthy era. He thrives on controversy and drinks in all he can from his supposed empty victories. Remember, this is the man who said 'We should cut down all the trees and turn them into toothpicks' knowing it would rile people up. He is just shock jock in drag. He is at his best when he is ignored. Don't buy into his hatemongering.

Michael McComb Monroe, NC   October 20th, 2007 12:10 am ET

I've listened to this so-called slur that Mr. Limbaugh made about phony soldiers. I would suggest anyone who is ready to condemn him listen to it. He never once insulted any true military person. His comments were directed at a certain person who lied about what our brave men and women are doing in the combat zones. Mr. Reid made his remarks about Rush without investigating what the facts were. He and his 40 other cronies owe Mr. Limbaugh and the American public an apology for trying to ridicule someone well within their rights to free speech and also trying to use their positions as Senators to bully a private citizen. Will they do it? I seriously doubt it. They have a political agenda and it has nothing to do with hearing or speaking the truth.
I used to be a middle-of-the-road political person, but for the last two years I've heard lie upon lie coming from the left, and much of it published in mainstream media and broadcast on mainstream news. They have convinced me they have only their political agenda first in mind, then being an American second. I will be voting to the right from now on. So will many people I know who used to be middle of the road like me. Thank you for helping me make up my mind.

Robyn Harris it's DONE already . IN fact it was already done before you finished tying your comment. Rush Limbaugh donated 2.1 million dollars and is calling on all 41 signators to match Rush's donation.

Such generosity needs to be commended and reported on every day until Harry Reid and the other 40 signators make their matching donations.

Michael Schuamnn, Bloomington, IL   October 19th, 2007 11:14 pm ET

Rush is delusional, as always. The letter is basically meaningless, even in the context of the 'Culture Wars". Rush is not likely to have any great staying power in the history of American popular culture. It brought in that kind of money because somebody was willing to lay it out – maybe an autograph collector and most likely for the charity aspect. Not for any deeper meaning and certainly not just because Mr. Windbag is involved.

Alan, Manitowoc WI   October 19th, 2007 11:07 pm ET

What price credibility? Now we know–from the guy who worships Reagan, but never actually got around to voting for him. Wake up–Rush has always been, and always will be, about Rush. Conservativism has its voice–and he is as shrill and vacuous as he has always been. Shameless, shameless, shameless self-promotion by someone whose conviction is as thick as a $1000 dollar bill.

Living Soul, Washington   October 19th, 2007 11:01 pm ET

For all you idiots quoting the KIA's, and blaming anyone who stands up for protecting YOU from terrorists, why don't you quote how many deaths were reported by voluntary abortions in the USA since the war in Iraq started? Those children won't be counted as KIA's because they weren't given the chance to see any action! They simply weren't given a chance! The Democrat's stand on this issue, including that of low-life Reid, is what needs blasting. Now that would be worthwhile project.

Paper and envelope – 25 cents

Tax payer money wasted by very low rated democratic senators to discuss and compose a letter – $1,000's

The way Rush handled the proof of their incompetence – $2,100,100.00 to Priceless!

Soooo, to all the Rush bashers, just when do you think these democratic senators are going to step up to the plate with some donations?

Rush Rocks!

James, New York City   October 19th, 2007 10:40 pm ET

My,My,My,
The Left seems to be in a snit over this. Rush did not lie. Kills you does it not? Rush has a 20 year record of being consistant in regard to supporting the troops. Harry declared the "Surge" a failure Before all the troops were in place. So who is supporting the troops and who hopes we lose? Hmmmmm?

C Raddad San Jose CA   October 19th, 2007 10:38 pm ET

Dingy Harry is now claiming it was his idea to auction the letter!

What a dirt-bag is Harry!

Why can't CNN report on Harry's Land Swindles and Bribes from Casinos?

Pat, Cincinnati, Ohio   October 19th, 2007 10:34 pm ET

I listened to the Rush broadcast. Anyone that disagreed w/ the war was a phony soldier. It was shocking.
Then to see how he deleted this segment on his website and in transcripts really opened my eyes.
Any respect I had for him is gone.

Please open your eyes and ears.
Don't be led like sheep.

TOM COLLINS ROCHESTER NY   October 19th, 2007 10:33 pm ET

ALEXANDER MOODY NEEDS TO TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT EXACTLY RUSH SAID AND IN WHAT CONTEXT AND IF THIS PRODUCER OF THIS STORY DOES NOT TELL THE TRUTH THEN HE IS TO VEIWED AS A DEMOCRAT PARTY HACK FOR ONLY TELLING THEIR SIDE OF THE STORY AND GETTING IT WRONG ABOUT WHAT RUSH REALLY SAID.a transcript from Limbaugh's Sept. 26 show suggests the "phony soldiers" remark specifically addressed the case of Jesse MacBeth, an anti-war activist who claimed to have witnessed atrocities as a Purple Heart recipient in the Army Rangers. MacBeth never served in Iraq and was expelled from the military after 44 days in uniform.

Rachel Lee, Chicago, IL   October 19th, 2007 10:29 pm ET

This is ridiculous. Reid is an idiot; it wasn't his idea to raise money for charity – it was Rush Limbaugh's idea to raise money for charity. Reid was trying to stifle Rush's first amendment right to free speech and then try and steal the praise when it backfired on him. What a loser. Reid should put his money where his mouth is.

Rush made a brilliant move here.

Seam, Philly, Pa   October 19th, 2007 10:24 pm ET

I don't get people in this country. Someone paid how much for a stupid letter? There are starving kids in the world.

John, San Antonio, TX   October 19th, 2007 10:21 pm ET

Hey RB In case you did not know our soldiers, all of them, are volunteers that serve this great country. Don't pretend that you are concerned about the brave men and women in service overseas just for political crap. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS when it comes to the soldiers.

Josiah   October 19th, 2007 10:18 pm ET

How many meals could $2.1 million provide or how many gallons of heating fuel could $2.1 million provide?

What we waste our money on in this country in the process of promoting hatred and bigotry!

S. Wright   October 19th, 2007 10:16 pm ET

Hey, Senator Reid, Lenin called; he says he wants his playbook back since you are obviously too incompetent to employ his tactics. He also wants you to get the copy Madame Speaker has, too.

Have you checked your favorability ratings in Nevada, sir? Does the name Tom Daschle strike a chord?

You schmuck, you.

Ben, Omaha Nebraska   October 19th, 2007 10:12 pm ET

I thought drug addicts were suppose to be behind bars and not running a talk show? At least that is according to Republicans. Weird how that worked out.

Jeff, Dubuque, Iowa   October 19th, 2007 10:11 pm ET

I was surprised CNN put this on. What would really be impressive would be for them to post the transcript and weigh in on the fact that Limbaugh's comments were distorted. More impressive yet would be a story on the phony soldier who lied about his service and accused real soldiers of butchering and burning innocent civilians. That would be impressive indeed.

ronnie - knoxville, tn.   October 19th, 2007 10:10 pm ET

There ARE a number of phony soldiers who lie about or exaggerate their mil service. Even ABC did a report on it. ABCNews coined that term for the report.

Those my friends are facts. Check it out.

dave , antioch , ca   October 19th, 2007 10:10 pm ET

If you lefty's are waiting to expose "rushes lies " you will wait till hell freezes , The missing parts are available and have NOTHING to do with cover up ( the fave cry of lefty's)

Bill, Denver CO   October 19th, 2007 9:59 pm ET

Yep, Rush doctored the audio.

He also sent out that secret frequency that deleted the memories of all of his listeners who were hearing his original broadcast and know that he in no way made any of the comments Hillary's Media Matters organization or any of the Democrats in Congress accused him of.

Then again, the truth has never been important to the Democrats in Congress, so why start now?

ronnie knoxville, tn.   October 19th, 2007 9:44 pm ET

there's no more weasly character in politics than Harry Reid .ALL THREE sons of his and his son-in-law are lobbyists. That's creepy and almost nepotistic (is that a word?) He's a career politician. Let's see the roll call of 41 Washington blow-hards match Rush's 2 million donation. Let's just see

Cory, San Diego, CA   October 19th, 2007 9:44 pm ET

This is awesome! Thank you Rush and the Republicans! You'd never see any Democrat out raising money for the soldiers (They're too busy suggesting soldiers illegally kill innocent people in Iraq as the disgraceful Rep. Stark did). Rush raises money for soldiers/Marines all the time.

Rob , Ft. Lauderdale   October 19th, 2007 9:43 pm ET

Rush is admirable to turn this stupid political attack by Harry Reid into a benefit for the Marines and law enforcement. He could have taken it personally, he could have whined, but he quickly thought of a way to put his millions where his mouth is. He's much more patriotic and has a history of being much more giving to the various charities that give to our troops than Harry Reid

Horner Cosby   October 19th, 2007 9:40 pm ET

The whole Reid fiasco is a debacle. First his accusations on the senate floor and now his face saving comments today on the senate floor, concerning Rush Limbaugh.

I consider myself a moderate but this congress is pushing me over the edge. The Democrats are out of control and not focused on issues. If they drop their partisanship fanaticism I would regard congress in a better iight.

I am fed up and will make my voice heard in the next election.

I am confident that most moderates feel this same way as well however I can only base this on my conversations with my friends. HC

guy mc. A, charleston sc   October 19th, 2007 9:38 pm ET

Harry Reid and those who support him are the reason this country is so divided. Dems are supposed to be

-tolerant
-peaceful

all you see is vile hatred against Rush Limbaugh, who did nothing more than makeONE comment complaining about phony soliders. So what.

Andy, Connecticut   October 19th, 2007 9:32 pm ET

Everyone complaining that this letter was not the worst abuse of federal power, you are absolutely right, the worst was the murder of 86 people, including 17 children under age 10, at Waco during Clinton's watch. Kind of makes accusations against the Bush administration pale in comparison.

ThirstyJon, Adelaide, SA, Australia - from the U.S.A.   October 19th, 2007 9:32 pm ET

Reid is a dope. He slams Limbaugh early in the week and then today is trying to somehow get credit for raising $$ for charity. Does he really think that America will buy that. Even Moveon.org liberals will see thru that.

Note to Nevada: stop smoking crack on election day. what other explanation could there be for that dope getting elected?

josh, fairlawn, oh   October 19th, 2007 9:24 pm ET

Screw rush limbaughs

Phony soldiers vs. "betrayus", a nickname from Petraeus' own soldiers used on blogs, since 2004….

Disgusting hypocrite rush!

Sam   October 19th, 2007 9:21 pm ET

Limbaugh , you are a waste of space and all you pathetic republicans supporting this fool have ruined our nation. You are all hypocrites and without question- fake Americans.

Brian, Denver, CO   October 19th, 2007 9:20 pm ET

"It got this kind of money because it represents one of the most outrageous abuses of federal power in modern American history."

I'm sure how I feel about this bit of high melodrama. McCarthy? Internment camps? Indeed, Guantanamo?

No, clearly this letter calling on his boss to reprimand has just gotta be one of the worst. So up on the cross of victim-hood for poor, downtrodden Rush.

YouKnow Staunton, VA   October 19th, 2007 9:18 pm ET

Sorry, I forgot. In addition to being a fat pig junkie, he is also a draft dodging traitor. Hope this helps!

Why is Reid still talking? Hmm let me have a media battle vs. the 20 year king of talk radio. Great idea.

Cant wait for the strategy on how to blow the seemingly unblowable 2008 election. Thanks again Harry.

REID=PWNED

Blayze Kohime, Columbus OH   October 19th, 2007 9:11 pm ET

I do not agree with Rush, but the statement he made is something that I would have not even seen as significant if listening to his program. It seems that even the people whose side I am closest to being on do idiotic things now.

Greg, Barrington, IL   October 19th, 2007 9:01 pm ET

Here's the simple truth. The conservative "mainstream" are really what is wrong with America today. (How many wackos have voiced their opinion about what is "wrong" with America today?) Oh well, anyway, the fundamental problem is this: Political conservatives are inherently not intelligent enough to govern us and protect us in a world that becomes more and more dangerous to our safety and well-being. They continue to focus on the 1600s pastime of identifying and isolating those American citizens that are "not moral enough" to live among us. Can we ever get past the Simple-Simon cretins like Limbaugh and go ahead and be the world leader that we could be? Even if they dont like it, the world would accept the fact that we are the strongest and most acceptable voice of reason and justice if only they could see that we attach no value to the proponents of the 1800s mentality of racism, bigotry, hatred, meanness and greed that are the cornerstones of political conservative thought in modern America. I have a real problem with the low moral character of the modern conservative… Can it finally be time to make it clear to them with a resounding majority: "Enough. There is nothing moral or respectable in your political platform of hatred, greed, and exclusion, no matter how many times you roll your eyes toward the sky and avow your belief in religion". The Ku Klux Klan are real religious and they are scum… Osama Bin Laden is real religious and he's a mass murderer. How long are we going to allow these barbarians to mask their true nature behind non-existant religion and patriotism? Move forward America or we are going down…

Jim in Orlando, FL   October 19th, 2007 9:00 pm ET

Not too often in the arena of politics and commentary that one gets to "have their cake and eat it too". Score two for the cigar smoker.

Rush Limbaugh, pill popping drug addict chickenhawk with a boil on his butt… What a joke.

DAVID M. KLINGMAN MANTECA CA   October 19th, 2007 8:59 pm ET

Finaly when the letter is sold on e-bay CNN picks up the story. A story that has been covered on FOX since it started. No matter how many liberal, Commie, Queer, (I can now use that word thanks to the TV show Queer Guy)anti-american, pro-illegal, pro-Castro, pro-Chavz, pro-aboration idots post on this story. The fact is that Rush won!! Not only did he prove how much of an idiot Harry Reid, and the other 40 Senator's who signed the letter are, he put his money where his mouth is. Wake up America, most of the folks who signed the letter have millions of dollars that the did not earn on the public dole. How much money are they giving to the troops.

tokalion, Albuquerque, NM   October 19th, 2007 8:52 pm ET

Next these right wing wacko's are going to auction off nooses to hand in Jena, Louisiana. Rush and his loyal wacko followers only marginalize themselves…just like the Klu Klux Klan.

I love my brother Rush.
My Mom, Dr. Laura and our dad Adolph (god rest his soul) are so proud of him. God is on your side Rush.

Mike , Virginia Beach   October 19th, 2007 8:45 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh said nothing wrong. Sen Reed was completely wrong in taking what media matters fed him as fact. Sen Reed is bad, Rush is right!!!!!

Shaughn, Portland, Oregon   October 19th, 2007 8:39 pm ET

Coming from a lawbreaking drug abusing, womanizer with so few morals to begin with is quite humerous and somewhat obscene. Our country will be a much better place when we stop listening to the filth spouted by blowhards like Mr. Limbaugh…he is irrelavant and the only reason anyone listens at all is because news organizations allow him to USE the media for his own self glorification.

chum, philadelphia, pa   October 19th, 2007 8:30 pm ET

Rush is to be congratulated! What a sheer stroke of genius to turn that letter of condemnation into such a huge donation to a worthy charity. Absolutely brilliant!

Chiara, Sacramento CA   October 19th, 2007 8:27 pm ET

I heard the 'phony soldier' comment as it aired, and due to it's lack of any foundation in reality, found the controversy it caused commical. I realise that admiting that I actually listened to the show and understood the context of his comments will automatically disqualify me in the eyes of the Limbaugh haters who want to see him brought down a notch and don't care whether or not the truth is utilized in doing so, but it was clear during the show that Rush was speaking in the context of people who bear false testimony of fabricated atrocities, not genuine anti-war soldiers. Media Matters' doesn't. If it did, Reid wouldn't have looked as small as he did today.

Lionel New York, New York   October 19th, 2007 8:24 pm ET

CNN is such propaganda and is so biased. They somehow neglected to mention that Rush will match the bid dollar for dollar. Reid in hearing about the letter came in and tried to take credit. They're are senators who signed that despicable piece of paper who can afford it and none of them are contributing. Liberals are in fact such caring and giving people

Mel Springfield, Oregon   October 19th, 2007 8:12 pm ET

Here we go again. Rush on drugs, Rush needs a drug screen, Rush this, Rush that by the Liberals. But if somebody says anything disparaging about Liberal Candidates (Hey, somebody ask Bill Clinton last time he inappropriately "felt somebody's pain?") boy there would be hell to pay.
Double standard.
Yet again.

Rob, Cincinnati, OH   October 19th, 2007 8:11 pm ET

Oh yeah! And CNN.com certainly did show their true colors by finally reporting this 4 hours late, and on the Poly page only. I guess that "Dads in drag vieing for Hannah Montana tix" is more interesting than $4 million to charity…

Foxnews, here I come… Where do I change that bookmark?

Joe Henderson   October 19th, 2007 8:07 pm ET

This argument is futile. Any independent thinking, caring person knows Rush is a bigoted, avaricious liar. Anyone who listened to the actual original audio can tell his 'phony soldiers' comments refers to those soldiers who do disagree with Bush's illegal war. The reference to Jesse Mcbeth comes a full two mintes later – after the original caller is long gone (2 minutes is an waful lot of time in radio – sit silently for 2 minutes and you'll see what I mean.
On the other hand, you have the 'dittoheads' – mindless self-righteous, uncaring miscreants who believe anything that spews out of rush's vile mouth. One final comment: you can listen to Rush any day of the week to hear him blanketly insulting anyone who disagrees with him – he says far worse things than 'phony soldiers'. I take solace in the personal hell that this lying scumbag has created for himself. No wonder he is a drug addict!

matt   October 19th, 2007 8:06 pm ET

Are we all sure this cash isn't just feeding Rush's drud addiction?

In all seriousness, let's get back to seriousness and quit talking up these silly little tit-for-tat's.

sharon snow   October 19th, 2007 8:05 pm ET

wow cnn better late than never. poor old harry, he still can't admit that he took rush's commets out of context. any thing to keep media watch happy. today he tried to turn it around and make the dems look like the good guys, the only way he can do that is to put up or shut up. he can do like rush and match the money, the profits from his land deal could relly help the marines kids. by the way Harry, did you serve in the military?

Clint, Tulsa, OK   October 19th, 2007 8:04 pm ET

I always hear the left-wing media say Rush spreads hate. I listen to his show when I can and have never heard a hateful thing yet. Please, someone show me just one hateful thing he has said. And if you consider Rush chastising soldiers who lie about themselves and our military as hateful – I think I see the problem. I guess lying about yourself and your own country's military isn't hateful, but pointing out those losers who would do such a thing is hateful. Now I see.

Maryann ( Bowlin) Paap, Bend, Oregon, USA   October 19th, 2007 8:03 pm ET

Thank GOD for RUSH LIMBAUGH!
He's pure Genious!
He is a gift from GOD to this earth, the U.S. and the American people!
98.7 % accuracy rating, based on facts and documentation, on his radio program = Truth! A voice for the true red, white and blue blooded Americans. With out his program, where would truth seekers hear it?
Spineless, fork-ed tongued liberals, the likes of crooked Ted Kennedy, Ried and Polosi, Clintons, Obama, etc., including the liberal owned press (Big Lie propaganda machine) in this country are the cancer eating away at America and our freedoms. What is their accuracy rating? They're pathetic! Some of these cowardly smelly little lying-commie rats, won't even wear a United States of America lapel flag pin! Heeelllooooo!!!
Who really genuinely supports America, patriotism and the troops?
God Bless the troops, President G.W. Bush, and Rush Limbaugh!
From a Rush Babe,( I LOVE Rush because I love truth!)

James Dallas TX   October 19th, 2007 8:02 pm ET

I love it. All the liberal Democrats who signed that letter just look dumber and dumber. I agree with Rush today on what he made of Ried's speach earlier today, "You win Rush"! I love it! Also hey liberal Dems you don't like Rush Limbaugh then don't listen to Rush Limbaugh. It is not brain surgery.

Rob, Cincinnati, OH   October 19th, 2007 8:01 pm ET

For those saying that "Rush lied", "Rush doctored the transcripts", etc.. Come on!? You are only wishing. It isn't even in his character to say what the Dems claimed. His history says more than any transcript. And so does the Dems…

Clint, Tulsa, OK   October 19th, 2007 7:53 pm ET

Wayne from Greenville – you are an ignorant man clueless about the world. Unlike you, I get my information from the source instead of jokes like CNN, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NBC and the other 30 liberal news outlets out there. I happened to be listening to the show and what was edited out was the caller rambling on about WMD. What was cut had nothing to do with the disgraceful soldiers who make up lies about our military. Get a f#^k*9g life and do your own research, loser.

Chris, Palm Bay, FL   October 19th, 2007 7:49 pm ET

People are stupid. They exhibit so much indignation for anti-military remarks that Rush didn’t make, but are perfectly fine with the General Betrayus ads. Exactly when did consistency die off?

Kevin, Austin, TX   October 19th, 2007 7:49 pm ET

I think it's HILARIOUS that Rush has to pay $2.1 million for dissing American Soldiers. He lied and denied (yes, he did doctor the transcript and you can hear the original if you doubt), then pulled a political-marketing stunt that backfired on him. I'm sure he figured the letter might fetch a couple thousand bucks… but he had NO IDEA someone would actually offer to pay THIS much! Of course, since Rush is on the board of the foundation to receive this donation, he'll no doubt figure some way to weasel out of paying… like maybe get the board to vote him a $2.1mil "bonus" for raising an equal amount of money.

Reid & Co. may not have gotten Rush to admit to and apologize for his disparaging remarks about Amercian Soldiers… but at least they got Rush to show himself for the liar he is, and in the process, helped to raise millions to benefit children of soldiers killed in action (even if Rush, predictably, welshes on his part).

J. Glick Fort Myers Florida   October 19th, 2007 7:46 pm ET

First these Democratic Senators take Limbaugh's comments completely out of context, and Limbaugh pulls off one of the most brilliant political maneuvers in American History, all to benefit a wonderful cause. Never before has a group of elected officials had so much egg on their faces at once, and it was all supplied by their own ignorance and hypocrisy!

Ken Los Angeles, California   October 19th, 2007 7:43 pm ET

Also The mcl-lef have in addition to the regular program, our Foundation decided to support all American Forces and also Coalition Forces in the invasion of Iraq and taking of Baghdad from 3 March 2003 to 16 July 2003. In the past, the Foundation also included in our program the children who lost a parent from all agencies killed in the murderous attack on the Pentagon. We also decided to go back and give our bonds to children who lost a parent on the USS Cole; the children of the Air Force personnel killed at Khobar Towers; and, with great honor, the twelve children who lost their parent on the space shuttle Columbia disaster.

Gee wez! I didn,t know Rush had the Market cornered on Patriotism. I know he has hearing problem, maybe it the side effect from the drug abuse over the years. But I suggest if he going to donate the money that it go to all those homeless vet out their in America that can really use the help instead of the Military Police of tne Marine,s They don,t need the help. You see Rush, how easy it is to miss the mark when your just grandstanding for applause. Get over yourself! Help those VET,s or maybe you consider them phony soldier,s too!

JFK, Phx,AZ   October 19th, 2007 7:36 pm ET

Rush is no hero and never will be. He is an overpaid windbag that has insulted soldiers with his 'phoney soldiers' routine. I applaud the Senators for issuing a letter. At least some good comes out of the letter with the money.

Tom Dedham, Mass   October 19th, 2007 7:36 pm ET

Posted By Wayne, Greenville, TX : October 19, 2007 5:57 pm

Wayne, yes, it was edited, as another caller was on rambling about WMD's, it had ZERO, ZILCH, NADA to do with what we are talking about here, it is backed up by the transcripts.

Media matters is your typical liberal attack machine that is baseless and as usual factless, no suprise that Shrillary loves to say she started "Media matters", it is the lefts way of attempting to silence another viewpoint.

Can't beat em' Shrillary, silence em'.

Henry Waxman and another genius from California (among others) are having paid staffers read Hannity's, Rush's and other conservatives radio shows to find some type of gotcha, PAID staffers doing this people.

The entire proceeds of this auction.. the entire high bid… will be donated to The Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation, a registered charity which provides financial assistance to the children of fallen Marines and federal law enforcement officers.

Rush Limbaugh serves on the Board of this organization and has been active on its behalf.

So for you naysayers and haters, he sits on the board of this great foundation and has been doing it for years.

The MSM must have missed that fact.

Maybe Larry Craig went to the post office that day, story at 11:00.

Do you still think he hates the military or would ever disparage them if he gives his OWN time, effort and yes, money for the cause for OVER twenty years.

What has Harry Greed ever done “for the cause”?

The sound you sheep are hearing is crickets in your head trying to come up with a response, here’s one, bah, bah, bah.

Not even a huge fan of his, but the facts are what they are, the facts.

Ken Los Angeles, California   October 19th, 2007 7:33 pm ET

Correction for some of the people who are not familiar with where the money is going…It's not going to "The Marines" it is going to the The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation (www.mc-lef.org/). Through the continuous support of our donors, we have distributed aid with a value of more than $29,000,000.00 to eligible children. This assistance was primarily rendered to children of Marines or Federal law enforcement personnel who were killed on duty or died under extraordinary circumstances while serving our country at home or abroad. These funds enable us to provide these children with scholarships for their higher education. When a child of a United States Marine is afflicted with a physical or mental disability and requires special medical equipment or tutoring, our Foundation may grant financial assistance to that family if their personal insurance does not cover the complete cost of treatment for this child.

In addition, Rush has been a member of the Board of Directors for this charity for many years.

Hate the man if you must, spew invective's at those who show him support, but please recognize this awesome charity for the job they do.

Chris, Los Angeles   October 19th, 2007 7:30 pm ET

Typical of the far right.
Slam someone, make money off it. What crap!

jp, Honolulu, HI   October 19th, 2007 7:30 pm ET

Rush is just a fat druggie. He should know that the "most outrageous abuse of federal power in modern American history" involved several millions of public dollars, powerful Republican leaders and Kenneth Starr…

Jesus Phoenix Arizona   October 19th, 2007 7:26 pm ET

I am just wondering why the media trys to make right wingers look like the good guys and liberals look like the bad guys. I am guessing there is no left wing media anymore. Plus where was all the outrage when the republican senators tried to stop Move On adds? Rush is just a right wing hack who likes to report with no facts and pure spin. It is his ilk on the air that does a disservice to our country. When we aren't given facts what good is a healthy democracy. God helps us our get our country back from these neo-conservatives who keep ruining it

Nestor, Austin, TX   October 19th, 2007 7:25 pm ET

Michael, Houston, TX   October 19th, 2007 7:24 pm ET

The 41 elected officials that signed the letter basically were asking for censorship. They were asking for a revocation of the First Amendment. They are the modern day Benedict Arnold and should be tried in court for treason.

Josh, Madison WI   October 19th, 2007 7:21 pm ET

I'm so glad Rush has his show over the public airwaves with 25 million listeners so nobody can say stupid things like it's doctored audio!

Way to go Rush. Thank you for not whining about the situation and actually standing up and doing something. You have just had a victory for everyone who has ever voted rebublican or democrate, as this was not about party in the long run, but whining political figures who couldn't handle honor and had to use what power they think they have to silence an American.

LA Doc, Los Angeles, CA   October 19th, 2007 7:18 pm ET

PATHETIC. Absolutely pathetic. What a slimy, disgusting attempt by that doddering old leftist fool Reid to spin their poor attempt to paint Rush as anti-military. The only thing more laughable are the whiny, histrionic hypocrite crybabies on this blog who actually are defending the fiasco started by Reid by the typical "victim" liberal tactic. Making lame, childish insults about how Rush is fat, or drug-addicted, or really using the charity money for sordid means, etc. Hey bitter whiners, if you want to find sordid money, why don't you look at your own corrupt, vile Democrat leaders, like Shrillary. The loony, victimcrat Left that constantly brays about how they are so much better, morally, than the Right in this country should look up the definition of "hypocrite" in their PC college dictionaries.

Laura - Tulsa OK   October 19th, 2007 7:16 pm ET

I agree with those who say the DNC has become Stalinist because it is the Democrats who are all for "speaking out", "holding protests" and doing unorthodox things such shout out in Congressional hearings. Yet when Rush Limbaugh speaks his mind freely, he is crushed by the "free speech" crowd. Whether or not you agree with everything Rush says, it is the freedom of speech we have to preserve in this country.

Tom, Midland, TX   October 19th, 2007 7:15 pm ET

Rush should be required to write the check and give it to one of the "phony soliders" who disagree with his view on the war.

If Rush were as powerful as many on this blog believe him to be, he would take one of the "phony soliders" challege to call the Iraq veteran a "phony solider" to his face.

Additionally, if Rush had as much guts as many on this blog believe he does he wouldn't have gone crying to his boss about an ad that was critical of him which was scheduled to run during his show.

Rush Limbaugh, America's favorite drug addict!!!!

all of you who listen to and support Limbaugh are quite crazy, I must say. No, rather brain washed into thinking that this type of hipocracy & hate that he and others of his kind spews is somehow ok?

Rick, Evans, GA   October 19th, 2007 7:10 pm ET

"Harry Reid’s Favorables Fall to 19%
Saturday, June 09, 2007

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is now viewed favorably by 19% of American voters and unfavorably by 45%. Just 3% have a Very Favorable opinion while 22% hold a Very Unfavorable views"
After this debacle, his favorable numbers will probably go to single digits

John, Honolulu, HI   October 19th, 2007 7:10 pm ET

The real scary issue behind all of this is that we have two presidential hopefuls, Obama and Hillary, who would dare join in on attacking a private citizen. There's two problems here. 1) As presidential hopefuls, OBAMA AND HILLARY SHOULD BE PRESENTING THEMSELVES AS PROTECTORS OF THE PEOPLE, NOT PROTECTORS OF THE DEMOCRATS. 2) They obviously didn't do their research on this issue, otherwise they would not have signed that letter. Making decisions without doing the research? Haven't we learned? This doesn't sound like a president I would trust.

Tom Zuke Waukesha Wi   October 19th, 2007 7:06 pm ET

How about clarifying that Rush never made those comments.

ed niles illinois   October 19th, 2007 7:02 pm ET

just goes to show you, conservatives voluntarily give to worthwhile causes from the charity in their heart, unlike democrats who take it from you and give it to those they think need it

Phillip Bunn , Bailey NC   October 19th, 2007 7:02 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh "is" what's wrong with America. He is the Big Daddy of Global Warming, The Big Daddy of Oil, The Big Daddy of Racism, The Big Daddy of War, The Big Daddy of oppressive, vomiting political leaders trying to nationalize and confine the free spirit of America in a concentration camp of Global Operant Development (GOD).

Eric, Cleveland OH   October 19th, 2007 7:01 pm ET

Hey, I think this is a great idea. If the MC-LEF got $4 million every time Rush said something stupid on the air, they'd be set for years!

Ethan, Brooklyn, NY   October 19th, 2007 6:52 pm ET

John John John. I'm a pacifist because Rush and Bush and sheep like you have caused the deaths of 3,800 GIs in IRAQ? Hey, remember Bin Laden???? I'm all FOR getting him! I saw the towers fall with my own eyes, so don't give me your BS, trying to impugn my patriotism. That's just disgusting. But you're right on one issue: I personally do not fight in wars. I am personally morally opposed to killing people and applaud the heroes who volunteer to preserve protect and defend our country. I love the American flag and find that people like you simply don't understand what this country is all about. For shame.

Chris Matthews? Liberal? How's the crack in Boston these days John? Carville is not a journalist. Get your facts straight.

And btw, you do a GREAT job of changing the subject from the issue I presented in my post:

3,832 DEAD.

God Bless our troops. Bring them home from Iraq. Get bin Laden furchrissake. It's been 6+ YRS since 9/11. Jeez. When will you GOP dittoheads get it? Unbelievable.

NC   October 19th, 2007 6:49 pm ET

This is fodder for the Republican base. We will show up for the election in large numbers. The libs are trying to do anything to get the american people and they are utter failures.

YouKnow Staunton, VA   October 19th, 2007 6:47 pm ET

Good Grief, 2.1 million the lying fat pig won't be able to spend on drugs. Maybe his dittoheads will send him some.

Ed,Ellenville,New York   October 19th, 2007 6:45 pm ET

Another 2.1 million the RNC won't get.lol

Jim, Medford, OR   October 19th, 2007 6:43 pm ET

This is news? Americans are falling back into the corporate right wing trap again: Who will win the soundbyte contest? Americans are victims of unprecedented corruption at the hands of Bush, the republican party, and military contractors (many of whom sponsor CNN). How many millionaires has this war produced? Rush is just one example. Anyone who challenges them gets smeared in the media (CNN, Fox, etc.). You can bet this stupidity will be front page news on Fox and Murdoch outlets. Rush is a heroin addicted (oxycontin is synthetic heroine -the media never mentions that), draft dodging psychopath who travels to the Dom. Republic in a private jet with suitcase full of viagra. What do you "family values" fans of Rush think he was doing there? Looking at cigar factories? Is that why you need viagra?

Dave Howell Anchorage, Alaska   October 19th, 2007 6:42 pm ET

Limbaugh continues to miss the message that the citizens of America are relying to him about his biaised inflammatory extremist remarks. If he were ever to experience enlightenment and listen to what the majority of Americans are truly thinking and saying, it would be a day allowing everyone to experience a fresh breathe of fresh air.

Brett, Boone Iowa   October 19th, 2007 6:35 pm ET

Thanks to Harry Reid's complete incompetence, the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation has received a 4.2 million dollar donation.

John, Boston, MA   October 19th, 2007 6:35 pm ET

Ethan, Ethan, Ethan. Using your logic Abraham Lincon and FDR are a hundred times worse than Rush. It is so funny to hear the weak pacifists make comments about people who are not in the service that support the US troops and their Commander In Chief. Let's turn it around, YOU WHO HAVE NEVER FOUGHT IN A WAR HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING AGAINST IT.

If you don't like your country and if the flag gets you mad then you might want to move to Iran. Maybe then you will appreciate the great nation you are lucky enough to live in.

Rush and Fox news are the counter to the liberal media. Oh, wait i forgot, Chris Mathews, Olberman, Carville, Couric, Rather are all objective fair journalists.

john williams san diego, ca.   October 19th, 2007 6:32 pm ET

serious discussion…their has been bad, incompetent, lazy, self serving, and confused Senators in our history, but harry reid will forever be the most stupid dunderhead ever…and that doesn't include corrupt with his 3 sons and 1 son in law being on his payroll.as lobbyist…keep donating to him liberal loonies

Paul, nashville, tn   October 19th, 2007 6:32 pm ET

All of you and all the democrats that spoke out on this issue are ignorant and petty, because you took one little thing out of what he said instead of seeing the whole discussion. You are taking it out of context and are just trying to find something else to keep people from seeing the problems with your party by pointing out all the "so-called" problems with people that support the republican party even to this pitiful point. TYPICAL!!!

Don, NY, NY   October 19th, 2007 6:30 pm ET

REID'S SLAM ON LIMBAUGH? ONCE AGAIN, CNN LYING AND CREATING NEWS. THIS BACKFIRED ON REID AND THE CNN HEADLINE SHOULD READ: "LIMBAUGH'S SLAM ON REID."

You people at CNN are despicable, predictable and incredible.

What a joke you have become.

Patriot and that's all there is to it. San Diego, CA   October 19th, 2007 6:29 pm ET

Is this the best we can do as American people? Why do we concentrate on the red button issues that divide us? Why can't we look at the real issues like jobs, medical care, and affordable housing? Why are we not holding ourselves to a higher standard? Why do we as a country allow talk show hosts or radio personalities to project our image to the world as our mouth pieces? We are better than this as Americans and we should really think about electing new blood to Washington. We should seek more independent minded candidates that think about the big picture that will unite us and not divide us. I urge everyone on this page to refrain from attacking each other. 2 wrongs do not make a right. We all love our troops. We all love America. We should act like.

George, Rockledge, Florida   October 19th, 2007 6:26 pm ET

Rush rocks! Harry Reid is a twisted, pathetic little man.

P.S. To Bill Nelson: Do what you're told, boy. Good boy.

Allan, Tulsa, Oklahoma   October 19th, 2007 6:25 pm ET

Limbaugh is a proven liar who twists facts to present his own warped opinions. He does a disservice to America and Americans. It is shocking that he continues to be allowed to pollute the air waves.

Joe, DC   October 19th, 2007 6:25 pm ET

So the phony talk show host and the phony Senate leader have put to rest their phony controversy. And the whole mess is reported as news by this phony news organization. God help us all.

Bradley Schaubs, Greeley, CO   October 19th, 2007 6:24 pm ET

Limbaugh is an fat, angry little man. He makes me laugh and feel good about the fact that I'm a Democrat.

Ethan, Brooklyn, NY   October 19th, 2007 6:23 pm ET

I love seeing the Ditto-heads come out of the woodworks on this one ridiculous topic. Who cares that the policies Rush supports have led to the death of:

3,832 US TROOPS.

Three Thousand, Eight Hundred and Thirty-Two. DEAD.

And Rush has the gall to pat himself on his back for a donation of $2million?

Totally bogus.

The fact that the fund is for the kids of troops that he cheer leaded on their way to their deaths (while sitting on his ass smoking cigars) is just absolutely sickening.

Harry Reid is an idiot and loser for getting caught up in this foolishness. Rush is a total fraud and a disgrace to conscious thought. The ones who really lose out on this idiotic debate are THE KIDS WHO HAVE TO GROW UP WITHOUT A FATHER. But oh, heckuva job Rushie. Sickening BS.

Hiram, Miami, Florida   October 19th, 2007 6:21 pm ET

You failed to mention that Mr. Limbaugh is matching the money raised on E-Bay, and that Senator Reid and the other Democrats who signed the letter are not !!

Doug: Columbus, Ohio   October 19th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

Alexander Mooney and CNN : Nice job on reporting of the Limbaugh letter today. That story was fairly done with quotes from Rush's show, and no other major news web site is providing that. We appreciate it.

D.W. Laconia, NH   October 19th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

Auctioning off an official letter from the Senate Majority leader that was signed by 40 senators shows the absolute contempt and disregard that Clear Channel's Mark Mays and Rush Limbaugh have for our elected officials that are not 100% ultra right wing and to their liking. They are a national embarrasment and for them to claim that they are "patroitic" is disgusting.
Rush and his owners are nothing but lying hypocrites, whom I'm sure did nothing but cheer when the government admonished MoveOn.org for questioning the political dog and pony show put on by Gen.Petraus for George Bush Inc. But when Rush slanders U.S military personel who do not agree with him and then called to account on it, he cries that he is a victim?
Sickening hypocrisy to the point of the absurd….

Sharon, Troy, MI   October 19th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

"Rush Limbaugh" – whenever I hear that name it brings to mind that wonderful morning a few years ago when a dear friend called to tell me about Rush's arrest for drugs. Now that was eating crow!

Tone, Fort Mill, SC   October 19th, 2007 6:17 pm ET

To all those that claim they listened to Rush and later say the audio and transcripts were altered… hmmm?? How often do you listen? Is Rush making you re-think your views? Would love to hear any one of them call in to Rush's broadcast and call Rush on it.

A,D,SUTTON CLAREMONT, CA   October 19th, 2007 6:15 pm ET

RELIGIOSITY DRIVES RUSH BROADCASTS. FEW READ OBSCURE INHOUSE POLICIES MADE BY BAN-ABORTION CLERICS WHO CREATE, COLLECT AND CONSUME "COSTS OF WORSHIP.' HERE IS THE RUSH ECONOMIC POLICY, I THINK, FROM PAGE 1414, VOL. 4, 1968 "CATHOLIC REFERENCE ENCYCLOPEDIA," DEFINING "PRIVATE PROPERTY." "THE RIGHT OF PRIVATE PROPERTY IS ONE OF THE IMPORTANT TEACHINGS OF THE CHURCH, A RIGHT SHE VIGOROUSLY DEFENDS AGAINST THOSE POLITICAL SYSTEMS THAT SEEK TO REPLACE PRIVATE WITH PUBLIC OWNERSHIP…PIUS X1 IN HIS 1931 ENCYCLICAL LETTER 'QUADRAGESIMO ANNO' STATES THAT 'THE RIGHT TO PRIVATE PROPERTY WAS GIVEN TO MAN BY NATURE OR RATHER BY THE CREATOR HIMSELF." RUSH WAS FOR WARS VS CUBA, N. NAM, MOSSADEGH'S IRAN, ALLENDE'S CHILE, SANDINISTA NICARAGUA AND IRAQ– ALL OF THEM BEING FOR NATIONALIZATION OF MAJOR INDUSTRIES. CAPITALISM IS PARASITIC AND EXTRACTIVE AND RUINS THE MIDDLE CLASS WITH ITS BUILT-IN BOOMS AND BUSTS. PEOPLE ARE CRIPPLED OR KILLED IN IRAQ TO DIVIDE ITS OIL PROFITS AMONG INVESTORS. I LOVE THE TROOPS BY WANTING TO GET THEM OUT OF DANGER. HUGE TAXPAID INDUCEMENTS MAKE THEM RISK LIVES AND BROKEN FAMILIES. INHUMANE INVESTORS START WARS AND BUY SHARES IN WAR SUPPLY CORPORATIONS. THERE IS NOTHING FAKE ABOUT WANTING TO SPARE SOLDIERS FROM COLOSTOMY BAGS, WHEELCHAIRS, LIVES ON MORPHINE AND OTHER PERSONAL CATASTROPHIES OF WAR.

Fred Markos, NY   October 19th, 2007 6:13 pm ET

Way to go Rush! You've trump those do nothing, sub-intelligent Senators! Beautiful!

Ed , Lost Pines, Texas   October 19th, 2007 6:09 pm ET

"It got this kind of money because it represents one of the most outrageous abuses of federal power in modern American history, and that is what makes it a collector's item."

This is a totally ridiculous statement. This is petty compared to the Patriotic Act, the abuse of the FISA court, why, nearly every step the Bush Administration has made in the last 5 years. This letter is not even in the same universe, let alone the same league!

Chris, Denver, CO   October 19th, 2007 6:08 pm ET

"It got this kind of money because it represents one of the most outrageous abuses of federal power in modern American history"

Not even Rush can actually believe this, can he? A letter of admonishment is an outrageous abuse of federal power, while torture, rendition and warrantless wiretapping are a-ok? What an ego this drug-crazed pervert has!

Laura, Walnut Creek, CA   October 19th, 2007 6:08 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh, a man who was deferred from military service because of an anal cyst and a "knee injury" that didn't keep him out of a single high school football game, referred to any serviceperson who disagreed with him as a phony soldier. The original audio is out there at several websites, listen to it.

Brian, Hartford, CT   October 19th, 2007 6:07 pm ET

Slam MediaMatters all you want. They've got the unedited audio. That doesn't lie, unlike Rush. I know right-wingers hate those little things called "facts" and "proof," but this is ridiculous. The unedited audio is posted. That's proof that Rush doctored the tape and transcript, which appeared AFTER the MM story was posted. Explain that.

End of story. It's really not that hard to understand!

Jeff, Cincinnati OH   October 19th, 2007 6:04 pm ET

Sam from Lincoln – did you read your comment before you hit send? Do you know who bought it? Do you know what organization is behind the woman who bought it and what they're purpose is? Do you know where the money is going?

This is a problem I see over and over with the left. No one does their homework before they comment. There's a cliche you might know…think before you speak. Get the facts before you speak! If more people would do that, and then accept the facts for what they are, we wouldn't be having these kinds of non-productive, hateful conversations.

Jeremy   October 19th, 2007 6:03 pm ET

I think Rush Limbaugh is a vile, disgusting, loudmouthed, drug addict. That being said no one in political power should try to control the media which, unfortunately, includes Rush. Rush has the right to free speach just like we all do (which includes liberals, though Rush would like to change that law). If that right is taken away this country is no longer a free, open society.

To call it the greatest abuse of federal power in modern history however is not only an overstatement it shows either blindness or ignorance. Considering the fact that George Bush completely and repeatedly disregards and disobeyes the constitution would qualify as a lot worse.
I would consider the detention and torture of American citizens without charges far worse. I would consider the illegal wire tapping of American citizens far worse. I would consider the illegal and immoral war much worse. I would consider the systematic arrest of protesters much worse. I would consider the lies, and the stealing and the utter corruption at every level of this administration much worse. Wouldn't any rational person?

Tom, Boulder, CO   October 19th, 2007 6:01 pm ET

It's hilarious to read what the liberals have written in this comment section. It's obvious how hate-filled they are.

It was good to see CNN FINALLY pick up on this story.

BTW, check out the politics main page and take a look at the pictures for the "Meet the Candidates" section. Pretty picture of Barak and Billary, then these ugly pictures of nobody Brownback and Hunter…. Just funny….

Reid can "praise" Limbaugh all he wants, but he has still yet to apologize to Limbaugh for Slandering him and trying to use his power as a government official to ruin Limbaugh career.
By the way, Limbaugh is donating 100% of the raised money to a charity that sends military kids of fallen soilders and police to college. He is also matching with 2.1 million additional dollars!

Limbaugh: $4.2 million
Reid: ZIP

Chris Peters, Atlanta, GA   October 19th, 2007 6:00 pm ET

Go Rush! This guy has the guts to say what so many of us want to say and cut right through the lies and smears cast out against him and is probably the greatest roll model of our time.

Mark Portland, OR   October 19th, 2007 6:00 pm ET

Why don't you go to the root of the issue. Nothing more than a lie by Mr. Reid twisting words and then he attempts to take credit. DNC has become stalinistic!!!!

Robyn Harris   October 19th, 2007 6:00 pm ET

Now I am waiting for Mr. Limbaugh to honor his committment and donate $2.1 million to the Marine Corps.
Such generousity needs to be commended and reported on every day until he makes his donation.

Steven Furtado, Kunkletown PA   October 19th, 2007 5:59 pm ET

As much as I disagree with Rush on many, many, MANY issues, I have to give him props for taking a silly situation like this and using it to do some good. I mean, the man may be a loud, self-important blowhard. But, really, what talk radio host isn't a loud, self-important blowhard?

I never in a million years would believe I'm saying this, but Go Rush!

Greg Okc Ok   October 19th, 2007 5:57 pm ET

Why is it that the dems and their suporters always have to include personal attacks when they dissagree with some ones ideas. Calling someone a druged out loudmouth does nothing to further their cause. Rush had an addiction to pain killers. He has passed several drug tests as part of his probation. These atempts to silence their critics by playing the bully has got to stop. The Senetors screwed up! Their attack dog media matters screwed up. Now the charity has $4.2 million. Reid,Obama,Clinton and several others can and should match the bid. Remember the Dems are the party with heart.. Put up or shut up!!!!

Richard-------Winfield,Al   October 19th, 2007 5:57 pm ET

I can understand why some rich republican would make such a bid to try to make RUSH look good.

Wayne, Greenville, TX   October 19th, 2007 5:57 pm ET

You go Rush!!!!!!

Wayne, I heard the original show and NOTHING was doctored. Why dont you stop lying?

Posted By David, Upstate NY : October 19, 2007 5:37 pm
Then how come Media matter's audio is a minute and a half longer, all between the point where Limbaugh uses the4 "phony soldiers" line and when he first mentions Jesse macBeth? I believe it's all you dittoheads who are lying in a sorry attempt to defend Rush – an undenfendable, drug-addicted, draft-dodging, thrice-divorced, closeted homosexual.

(Ask Rush about his arrest in the company of a male prostitute when he was working in Pittsburgh in the '70s under the pseudonym "Jeff Christie".)

Gary, Detroit, Mich.   October 19th, 2007 5:56 pm ET

Limbaugh is a drug addled pig. Thank -you.

joseph austin tx   October 19th, 2007 5:55 pm ET

I listened to the show live and i could understand he was talking about mcbeth. not all soldiers who disagree with the war are phony soldiers, and rush never said that. I dont think by the way 99% of the people who will be helped by this are complaining, and also the 41 dumbasses that signed this had nothing to do with this making money. It was all Rush making lemons out of lemonade, and all the people that support him and more importantly the troops.

Nancy, Jackson, MO   October 19th, 2007 5:54 pm ET

Now this IS funny! I'm sure there are 41 Senate Democrats that couldn't be happier with the outcome and very glad to have done their part. I'm guessing that Reid was not the only one that was surprised that it brought that much. Now it will be interesting to see if Limbaugh actually puts his money where his big mouth is.

Scott, Jackson, MO.   October 19th, 2007 5:53 pm ET

This is a perfect example of how stupid the Dems are. Picking a fight with Rush. Are you crazy? Dems you better pick on someone your own size if you don't like being humiliated with the whole country watching.

Steve Wessel, Fremont Nebraska   October 19th, 2007 5:53 pm ET

It's amazing that these democrats are still obsessed with the thought that they are running against either Rush (Not running or president although is more than qualified)or Bush (Can't run Again). So Loser Reid and the Likes can get nothing done in the house…Lied (oop's I forgot DemoIdiots Don't Lie)to there Deminions about what they would do… AND NOW want credit for what Rush does…. Absolutely Pitiful!!!!!

Jason, Neave Twp, Ohio   October 19th, 2007 5:52 pm ET

2.1 million bucks for a letter? Hmmm … woonder how much money conservatives can come up with when they have to fight against a Hillary Clinton presidency. The crooked press keeps touting the democrats' fundraising. Don't count your chickens yet.

Jeff, Cincinnati OH   October 19th, 2007 5:51 pm ET

I'm shocked that CNN didn't bury this one. Harry Reid ended up looking like a stumbling, bumbling fool. What is the Senate doing, taking the time to put this letter together anyway? Last time I checked, they were paid by U.S. tax dollars. This is not what we pay them for. I'm surprised there's not more outrage about that! The Dems need to stop taking all their time (and you and I are paying them while they're doing it) trying to smear and spin whatever the President, any Republican or Conservative does or says, and start doing something productive for the country. How bout working on a plan that would actually stop illegal aliens from crossing the border…illegally. (Illegal – look it up if you don't know what it means.) There's a radical idea…DO WHAT YOU'RE BEING PAID TO DO. If you worked for a private company, you'd be fired for not doing your jobs!

Chris, Port Orange FL   October 19th, 2007 5:49 pm ET

It just amazes me how many people Idolize the worst Senate Leader in history? 11% approval rating? Shouldn't you all be over on Media Matters?

It's too bad that progressives can't look and research past the talking points they get in their email. You might just be phoney Americans. Rush released video and transcripts for all to read.

Arshad, Memphis, TN   October 19th, 2007 5:48 pm ET

This comedian Limbaugh has proven to be at least of some use by auctioning the letter and matching the auction amount (if he keeps his promise to do so) although Senator Reid and the other senators and the winning bidder deserve all the credit for this.

Martin J. Stab   October 19th, 2007 5:48 pm ET

You have to hand it to Mr. Limbaugh for turning lemons into lemonade. I guess this proves that free markets can run circles around the government!

Ed, Chicago, IL   October 19th, 2007 5:46 pm ET

Not surprisingly, the CNN account omitted the small little fact that Media Matters/Move-On completely manipulated Rush's comments, and intentionally misrepresented them, in an attempted tit-for-tat for Move-On's hideous 'General Betrayus" ad. And then Reid has the gall to claim credit for having written the letter? What a joke. The only one who should MOVE ON is dingy Harry!

Jon Anderson Steelton, PA   October 19th, 2007 5:44 pm ET

Leave it up to the left to insist that Rush talking about Jesse Macbeth one minute 50 secs after the phony soldier comment means that the two weren't in the same context. Since when is one minute 50 sec a long enough span to say the comment was in a different context? The show is 3 hours long, for heaven's sake!!! Rush discusses topics like in this fashion ALL THE TIME! If you listen to the show, you would know this.

Becky Missouri   October 19th, 2007 5:42 pm ET

The ego maniac probably either bought the letter himself of funneled the money to someone to buy it. The letter was right on target. Rush trashed the veteran and the 12 year old SCHIP child AND THEN LIED ABOUT DOING IT. EVEN EDITED THE TRANSCRIP OF HIS PROGRAM. THE MAN IS A LOSER! ! !

doug moore Santa Fe New Mexico   October 19th, 2007 5:41 pm ET

What a waste of taxpayer's time. Instead of writing letters about what Rush Limbaugh has to say why doesn't Congress try and tackle real issues like health care, education, Social Security and Terrorism?
Represent the people of the USA don't stand behind some saber-rattling rhetoric claiming to support our armed forces.
Make a difference Congress. You're showing, as always, you can't muster the guts to do anything meaningful so hide behind the smoke-screen which is flag waving. We need to vote all these louts out!

Sam, Lincoln, Nebraska   October 19th, 2007 5:41 pm ET

Jeannie, Sacramento, CA   October 19th, 2007 5:37 pm ET

Mark Mays refusing to repudiate Limbaugh's remarks doesn't make them less offensive. It's like Bill O'Reilly paying a multi-million dollar settlement to Andrea Mackris. Just because the case didn't go to trial doesn't mean O'Reilly wasn't guilty. Inasmuch as Limbaugh's remarks may have thrilled the chickenhawk warmongers at the right, a large majority of Americans found his comments repugnant. This is the majority that believes opposing the war IS NOT unpatriotic, regardless of what Limbaugh and his ilk say.

Sarah, Kansas City, MO   October 19th, 2007 5:36 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh has no credibility. Why anyone considers him an expert at anything (except whenacquiring narcotics) is beyond me.

I consider him to be part of reason this country has become so devisive and bordering on losing all standing in the world.

The right wing in this country no only one thing: how to spread hatered and intolerance and Rush Limbaugh has been a huge part of that.

DT Wisconsin   October 19th, 2007 5:36 pm ET

Oops- I meant embassy bombings- plural (Kenya & Tanzania).

Neill C., Montgomery, Al   October 19th, 2007 5:36 pm ET

The people who keep claiming they heard the show and keep saying he docotored the tapes are just plain lying. It must be a sad life to hate someone so much you'll lie to smear them.

Rush has the last laugh on you. The truth is coming out.

Moe, NY   October 19th, 2007 5:33 pm ET

Limbaugh is nothing but a mouthpiece for the stupid. Certainly nothing intelligent comes out of that mouth.

Neill C., Montgomery, Al   October 19th, 2007 5:33 pm ET

Rush didn't smear the military and the military knows it. He smeared the people who claim to be military and aren't, and then those same people use their made-up military backgrounds to criticize the war.

His comments were specifically for the guy who claimed he witnessed atrocities in Iraq – the guy had never even been to Iraq! The fact that people here keep reiterating bad information just proves to me liberals don't care for the truth.

Washington Boro PA   October 19th, 2007 5:33 pm ET

Not being a Limbaugh fan makes this an easy comment to make. Reid and the others completely misrepresented his statement which was about he phony soldiers ala Jessee MacBeth who are phony soldiers. As usual, Reid and others who like to talk about those 'right-wingers' are doing exactly what they say others are doing; lying through their teeth and practicing personal destruction politics. MacBeth and the others are phony soldiers and Reid and the others got caught using the power of the government to attempt to silence a political big mouth. Reid and the others are no better than the Mafia and certainly worse. At least the mob doesn't lie to go after their enemies, the mob is pretty straight forward in their intent.

DT Wisconsin   October 19th, 2007 5:33 pm ET

Billy in FLA: you are "really, really" left wing. I thought lefties had the market cornered on compassion and love, but you spew hate, and hate unrelated to the story, at that.

Reid's attack on Rush was based on a lie, pure and simple. But as long as Rush gets attacked, the truth doesn't matter to some. Do some research.

And if WWIII isn't far off, it isn't because of Bush's response to terrorism. The US & our interests were being attacked over the last few decades (Marine barracks, WTC '93, embassy bombing, Khobar Towers, USS Cole, to name a few). A response was long, long overdue.

Thinking America is at fault here doesn't make you a bigger or more intelligent person. You just look foolish. We're screwed if someone of your mindset becomes President.

Ben chicago   October 19th, 2007 5:31 pm ET

Rush you should be glad you never served, if you were in 'nam youd been fragged. i heard what i heard you made fun of us who served.

Lawrence, KS   October 19th, 2007 5:31 pm ET

After Jimmy Carter and Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi may go down as the most insignificant members of US governemnt in modern history. The only real job they do there is to insure that they stay there. They talk alot but really have no position on anything.

Tom, Texas, USA   October 19th, 2007 5:31 pm ET

Very Hairy Reid is a blithering idiot. The poor fool is actually taking credit, along with other haters of the U.S. military who signed the smear letter (e.g., Hillary Rodham, Dick Durbin, Ted Kennedy, et al.), for the millions of dollars raised for the families of Marines killed in action.

Mike, Coarsegold, cal.   October 19th, 2007 5:30 pm ET

Harry, wipe the egg off your face, ok?

Jim , Belvidere, IL   October 19th, 2007 5:29 pm ET

Harry Reid is a wimpy, loud mouthed, sissy little liberal that can't take the heat. Rush destroyed him…and now all the little softy can do is praise that the money raised will go to a good cause…Reid is limp as a noodle…really makes me want to be Democrat….Not. Go Rush

Ken, Los Angeles, CA   October 19th, 2007 5:26 pm ET

Didn't another famous radio personality use to refer to Rush as a "sausaged-finger mother ….er?"

Ted mowers Wellesley Island NY   October 19th, 2007 5:25 pm ET

Harry Reid is a dope. He is trying to salvage something…anything out of his ridiculous blunder…All 40 Democrats who signed this letter should be embarrassed. That includes MRS. Bill Clinton

Mike, Macomb IL   October 19th, 2007 5:24 pm ET

And in a unique twist of fate, Harry Reid tries to take credit for what Rush did….And what's with the quote?

“But without qualification, Mark Mays, the owner of the network that has Rush Limbaugh, and Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they're auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a worthwhile cause.”

Wow, really got a firm grasp on the obvious there Harry…Pretty sure Rush knows it's going to a worthwhile cause, since he chose it!

Randall, Greenville, SC   October 19th, 2007 5:24 pm ET

"I don't believe Limbaugh would make a deliberate attempt to broadly smear all military personnel who oppose the war."

Chris, are you paying attention? But, technically you're right, he would only smear all military personnel who oppose the war AND MAKE THEIR VIEWS PUBLIC. Those are the only ones.

Phillip, MO   October 19th, 2007 5:22 pm ET

Hey, get it right CNN. In his speech Reid kept refering to Mark Mays as "Mark May". This clown actually thinks we believe he is sincere about this letter contributing to fallen Marines families when he doesn't even know who he's talking about. Pure theatre Reid, pure theatre. Now go do something useful with our hard earned tax dollars.

RightWingConspiracy   October 19th, 2007 5:20 pm ET

Harry Reid is the fool in this situation, not Limbaugh. With Congress' approval rating at a whopping 11 percent (far below that of Bush, by the way), you'd think he would have bigger fish to fry than going after a talk-show host. Nice priorities.

Phil San Filippo, San Diego, ca   October 19th, 2007 5:19 pm ET

Next time ask Reid why his 3 sons are big time Washington lobbyists! AKA 'special interest groups' as papa Reid calls them….

Anonymous   October 19th, 2007 5:19 pm ET

Whatever…

Susan, West Palm Beach, Fl   October 19th, 2007 5:18 pm ET

Limbaugh is irrelevant. It could have been anyone that Reid had written about and it would have raised money. People know that we are making history as the country has never been in worse shape and we are carving our new territory. We're greedy idiots "taking pictures" as the bus drives to the bottom. How pathetic.

Neill C., Montgomery, Al   October 19th, 2007 5:18 pm ET

If Reid thought it was such a great thing, why didn't he match Rush's match? Probably because he doesn't give one whit about the troops. But, there seems to be overwhelming support for Rush amongst the troops.

Colin   October 19th, 2007 5:18 pm ET

Unless Rush gives this $2,000,000 to an independant charity, such as one which benifits troops injured in IRAK I would assume that Rush gave this money to this person to use for a phony buy from him. This story smells.

Wayne, Greenville TX   October 19th, 2007 5:17 pm ET

knew Rush was powerful, Wayne, but had no idea that he could actually doctor what I heard when I listened to the show live, before he went and "doctored the audio and transcript on his web site"…beware of those black helicopters in Greenville!!

Posted By Rick, Fort Worth, TX : October 19, 2007 5:02 pm

If you don't believe me, Rick, check out the unedited audio on Media Matters.

And BTW – I heard that show live, too. And I heard him smear the soldiers who disagree with him. perhaps you only remember hearing what you WANT to remember hearing…..

Sandra, Concord, California   October 19th, 2007 5:17 pm ET

I heard the live quote also. It was changed. Rush is a lying slymebag, but then what else is new. When you can't tell the truth, you aren't left with many options.

DT Wisconsin   October 19th, 2007 5:17 pm ET

"Reid's slam on Limbaugh"!?

They've seen the light! It only took 3 weeks.

Bob, Washington, DC   October 19th, 2007 5:16 pm ET

Why are we waiting time on someone as irrelevant like Mr. Limbaugh when there is real news to report on? Isn't something going on with Lindsey Lohan or Britney Spears that CNN should rush to air as "Breaking News". Thanks, CNN, for giving me one more reason to stay away.

U.S. Marine cbh, Camp Pendleton CA   October 19th, 2007 5:16 pm ET

Amazing how easy is for Rush to support a war when he is comfortably in an air-conditioned studio. He is nothing more than a pain killer-addicted nut!

John from America   October 19th, 2007 5:15 pm ET

Well, I wonder what the phony drug prescription scrips would sell for on eBay.Com? Old loud mouth druggie has plenty to criticize others about but, what about Rush's law breaking drug ISSUES!

Neill C., Montgomery, Al   October 19th, 2007 5:15 pm ET

Harry Reid "blinked" on the Senate Floor today and tried to take credit for the good out of this.

And for the person who said he doctored the tape, you should have your head examined. I was listening and he did not doctor anything. Media matter lied about it and then Harry Reid made a fool of himself by believing media matters' lies. Media matters is Hillary's right hand man.

I applaud CNN for reporting this because it proves the Democrats will stop at nothing to take away our liberties, trash the Constitution, and lie about anything and everything to gain and keep power. They should be embarrassed as hell about this situation. Oh, and still waiting for Democrats to denounce Stark's comments which were way worse than what they claim Rush did. What makes it worse is that we know Stark said what he did, but we alsoi know that Rush did not say what media matters claims.

Just another smear campaign to censor a private citizen. It didn't work and Reid tried to make the most of the egg on his face. That didn't work, either.

RDA Philadelphia, PA   October 19th, 2007 5:14 pm ET

Nice job Rush! ……Why is there no hyperlink for The Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation in this article? You have one for Billary and Obama. Thanks for posting this Clinton News Network!

bmili, flower mound, tx   October 19th, 2007 5:11 pm ET

im confused as to why CNN made no mention of this going to the Marine and Law Enforcement charity or the fact that Rush is matching the $2 million dollars, i guess that would be too much.

R. Weber, Panama City Beach, Florida   October 19th, 2007 5:10 pm ET

Rush probably has no idea of what he actually said. When did he take his last drug screen?

GMAN, Irving, TX   October 19th, 2007 5:09 pm ET

Why praise Rush for this, he did nothing but be the idiot he always is. Mays is the creative one. The only thing positive here is that a good cause got some money. Rush is still trash, but still has a constitutional right to be trash.

Billy, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida   October 19th, 2007 5:09 pm ET

Wow, you guys that admire Rush so much are really, really right wing. It's amazing, you ultra right wingers, those of you who think Rush is sooo great, how you put party ahead of country. Harry Reid was right to write this letter, the other's right to sign it. The true abuse of power is how drug addict Limbaugh uses his show and those of his FOX news compatriates to paint himself the vicitm. Look at the mess this unchecked President has gotten us into. World War III is not to far off.

James, Phoenix AZ   October 19th, 2007 5:07 pm ET

Wonder why Harry Reid won't go on Rush's show to discuss this matter? Seems he was outraged enough to make public statements and write a letter to Rush's boss.

Hmmm… I wonder if Harry is ONLY about political theater as opposed to addressing the person directly you're offended by?

I still think Rush should publically say, "IF you're a serving soldier and felt my comments were aimed at you – I apologize…. but for the true phoney soldiers – who claim to have served but simply flunked out of boot camp – you should be ashamed!".

James, Corpus Christi, TX   October 19th, 2007 5:06 pm ET

Hey it just took $2million out of Rush's pockets and gave it to a good cause…Awesome…Bet it was purchased by a Dem..They get a $2 million tax deduction, get to destroy the letter, and make Rush shell out two million of his own stash..Win-win baby…

JK Ashburn, Virginia   October 19th, 2007 5:05 pm ET

Limbaugh's point, in case you missed it, was to note how Congresscreatures abuse their own "power" by addressing a letter to the head of a company that happens to be in an industry regulated by the federal government. Mark Mays did the right thing and ignored the request. Congresscreature predilection for wanting to silence detractors by any formal means would violate the First Amendment. So, they resort to unofficial bullying tactics. This is abuse of power and Rush called them on it. Good for him!

This sort of congressional behavior, along with related abuse of power such as earmarks, has got to stop. These clowns are far to arrogant for the good of the American people. Folks — wake up and throw them out of office.

Larry Shea Emery, SD   October 19th, 2007 5:04 pm ET

I am not amazed that Harry Reid had the chutzpah to lie about what Limbaugh said, then try to get his job derailed, then take partial credit for Limbaugh "turning lemons into lemonade." Limbaugh is a true patriot.

dan luparello; sun city west, AZ   October 19th, 2007 5:03 pm ET

If Senator Reid was at fault at all, it was because he gave the center ring of the circus to its biggest clown. Demagogues like Limbaugh are best ignored totally; maybe then they will slip back into the slime they came out of.

Rick, Fort Worth, TX   October 19th, 2007 5:02 pm ET

I knew Rush was powerful, Wayne, but had no idea that he could actually doctor what I heard when I listened to the show live, before he went and "doctored the audio and transcript on his web site"…beware of those black helicopters in Greenville!!

Val Davydov, Agawam, MA   October 19th, 2007 5:02 pm ET

When "phony soldiers" accusations by Reid & Co. first came out against Rush I said on this blog that that was one of the most embarrassing moments for Democrats. This is ten times more embarrassing than that. Shame on them.

Reid – you are holding on to your last straw honey, and please take Nancy with you when you come crumbling down.

Richard, West Palm Beach, FL   October 19th, 2007 5:02 pm ET

So it cost Rush Limbaugh $2.1 million out of his pocket to hide the foot in his mouth. If he had as much "integrity" when the Boat Vets lied, he would have made as big an issue then.

While all his supporters who can only "ditto" whatever he says, rejoice, they probably are proud of him for faking a tape that fooled them.

William Smith, Manchester NH   October 19th, 2007 5:02 pm ET

Alexander, I notice that you didn't point out that Reid was wrong in his rebuking Limbaugh. Rush was talking about actual phony soldiers who are being investigated by the FBI.

Andy, Tampa, Florida   October 19th, 2007 5:01 pm ET

Limbaugh shows, again, that he is a lying scumbag. The government never tried to "take away his living." This idiot has a little trouble with actual truth, though he's exceptionally good at distorting it.

Bradley Schaubs, Greeley, CO   October 19th, 2007 5:01 pm ET

$2.1 million…exactly the same amount that Hillary beat Obama by in the last fundraising quarter. Coincidence?

Well, at least now I can no longer say that Republicans never did any good. However, honest as Limbaugh's intentions are, I still think his comments were disrespectful to the troops.

If I had $2.1 million, I'd donate it to Obama's campaign funds. Which is better: Obama's signature, or Obama as US president?

Obama'08

Ralph Tedesco, Sydney, NSW, Australia   October 19th, 2007 5:00 pm ET

ok, you've included this (because you had to), but failed to explain it.
i guess you hope your readers will be TOO STUPID to understand what this letter represents.

stirfrysteve   October 19th, 2007 4:59 pm ET

You Quote Reid as syaing "…Mark Mays…" When in Fact Reid said "May" throughtout the whole speech. He could not even get the name Right, and you violated a pricipal journalistic standard of qouting a person's words!

Linda Magid, Plano, TX   October 19th, 2007 4:58 pm ET

Totally incredible. Good that money is going to something to help others, but THIS situation "represents one of the most outrageous abuses of federal power in modern American history"?! I am flabbergasted. The President destroyed Habeas Corpus, one of America's founding principles, along with other great reasons to be an American with his ridiculous war. I don't think this "issue" is even in the same category (and I think Senator Reid was acting kind of silly about it). But, then again, Rush does like to make himself more important than he actually is.

Gay Carroll, J.D., Sacramento, CA   October 19th, 2007 4:58 pm ET

Thank God for people like Rush Limbaugh who stood up to those lying weak-minded arrogant Senators. How dare senators on the floor of the Senate intentionally SLANDER and DEFAME a private citizen! And based on WHAT THEY KNEW TO BE A LIE. It is beyond belief. It is unreal. I will fight harder than ever to see that Republicans win elections–and to get rid of arrogant senators who abuse power such as all those who signed the letter against Rush Limbaugh.

GLC-Sacramento

Chris, Huntsville, Alabama   October 19th, 2007 4:57 pm ET

Interesting to note that Reid did not respond to Limbaugh's request that the Democratic signatories of the letter also match the winning bid with a charitable contribution.

As for what Limbaugh "really" meant by the statement…

First of all, in spite of his numerous faults, I don't believe Limbaugh would make a deliberate attempt to broadly smear all military personnel who oppose the war. The high profile situation of the really fake soldier who lied about serving in Iraq was almost certainly what he was referring to.

Secondly, as much as it hurts to say it, Rush was right in protesting that the letter was an attempt by government officials to deprive him of his job by throwing political pressure around. Sure, Clear Channel has the right to fire or censure him. His audience also has the right to not listen. Specific individuals may have the right to sue him for libel or slander. But, saying "We're powerful Senators and we don't approve of what he says so you'd better do something about it" is sleazy, particularly when it requires a bit of twisting of meaning (something Limbaugh should know something about, since he does it frequently as well).

RB, from the bay state   October 19th, 2007 4:56 pm ET

As long as the likes of Limbaugh keep beating the drums for this stupid war there will be no end to the troops and their families that need assistance when and if they return home.

Rush thinks that money will heal all the harm that has been done to our young. Not so.

Wayne, Greenville, TX   October 19th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

Nice to see that you finally picked up this huge story. However, you could have buried it further down. This was a GIGANTIC black eye for those 41 Democrats, especially Harry Reid, who used an intentional lie and distortion to bully, gag and silence a talk show host and the American public.

Posted By E. Cibelli – Dayton, MD : October 19, 2007 4:45 pm

Joseph, austin, tx   October 19th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

way to go Rush, way to turn a negative into a positive situation for the military men and women.

EB Rideout   October 19th, 2007 4:52 pm ET

Just shows how revered the 41 signers of the document are. If they were "nobodys" the bidding would never have gone so high.

As for Rush, It's time for him to stop whining and bawling about how the Dems are picking on him. I wouldn't pay five cents for his autograph.

MCD, San Francisco, CA   October 19th, 2007 4:49 pm ET

OMG, as much as I admire Reid… Rush would tear him to shreds! Don't do it Mr. Reid!! You are too much of a gentleman to go toe to toe with that loud-mouthed bully!

Joe, York Pa.   October 19th, 2007 4:48 pm ET

You the man Rush. I'm surprised CNN even put this on.

E. Cibelli - Dayton, MD   October 19th, 2007 4:45 pm ET

Nice to see that you finally picked up this huge story. However, you could have buried it further down. This was a GIGANTIC black eye for those 41 Democrats, especially Harry Reid, who used an intentional lie and distortion to bully, gag and silence a talk show host and the American public.

Jay, Vancouver, WA   October 19th, 2007 4:44 pm ET

Good for Rush…it was a brilliant political countermove, and agree with him or disagree, you have to commend him for it. And the fact that the kids of Marines and Law Enforcement killed in action will be getting these scholarships…that's just unbelievably cool.

Carmen, Miami FL   October 19th, 2007 4:41 pm ET

So I see Limbaugh's still an loudmouthed idiot with nothing interesting to say…

Wayne, Greenville TX   October 19th, 2007 4:40 pm ET

When the truth comes out about how Rush lied about his statement and doctored the audio and transcript on his web site to back up his lies, Betty Casey will learn that she paid $2 million for something that's totally worthless.

Worthless. Just like Rush.

Ryan Indianapolis   October 19th, 2007 4:31 pm ET

Go ahead Harry have something to drink with your CROW that you are eating. Rush just made you look like a bigger fool.
