The top bidder paid over $2 million for a Senate letter slamming Limbaugh.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – What’s the going price for a letter signed by 41 Senate Democrats officially condemning conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh’s recent controversial 'phony soldiers' comments?

$2.1 million, apparently.

That was the winning eBay.com bid Friday for a letter sent to Clear Channel CEO Mark Mays officially calling on him to condemn the comments in question. The letter was written by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and signed by 40 Democratic senators, including White House hopefuls Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Mays refused to condemn the remarks and Limbaugh placed Reid's letter on the popular auction Web site last Friday, pledging to match whatever it fetched and donate it all to The Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation.

When the Ticker first checked in Tuesday, the bidding stood at $50,000 — already a significant price for a standard Senate letter, but ultimately more than $2 million short of what the letter finally fetched Friday.

“The government tried to take away my living, by sending this letter to Mark Mays at Clear Channel and asking him to confer with me about my remarks,” Limbaugh said on his show Friday announcing the winning bid. “Private citizens, of their own accord — without a government mandate, without an Al Gore pledge — responded with creativity, and charity, and a sense of fun.”

Limbaugh identified the winning bidder as Betty Casey, a philanthropist and trustee of the Eugene B. Casey Foundation

“We cannot thank her enough for her support in this, and I am honored, and proud, and happy to be matching her,” Limbaugh said of Casey.

And in a unique twist of fate, Reid took to the Senate floor Friday complimenting Limbaugh for his use of the letter. (Watch Reid on the Senate floor)

“Now, everyone knows that Rush Limbaugh and I don't agree on everything in life and maybe that is kind of an understatement,” Reid said. “But without qualification, Mark Mays, the owner of the network that has Rush Limbaugh, and Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they're auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a worthwhile cause.”

Though Limbaugh made clear he wasn’t ready to bury the hatchet with the Senate’s top Democrat.

“I asked Senator Reid to go on the program and discuss his discussion of me as ‘unpatriotic,’” Limbaugh said on his show Friday after Reid’s speech. “He did not accept my offer to do that, and now has the audacity to climb aboard this, praising the effort, saying that ‘he’ never knew that it would get this kind of money. It got this kind of money because it represents one of the most outrageous abuses of federal power in modern American history, and that is what makes it a collector's item.”

Reid's spokesman Jim Manley later told CNN, "The irony of the situation is that this charity managed to benefit from [Limbaugh's] completely outrageous and offensive comments."

Go ahead Harry have something to drink with your CROW that you are eating. Rush just made you look like a bigger fool.

Wayne, Greenville TX   October 19th, 2007 4:40 pm ET

When the truth comes out about how Rush lied about his statement and doctored the audio and transcript on his web site to back up his lies, Betty Casey will learn that she paid $2 million for something that's totally worthless.

Worthless. Just like Rush.

Carmen, Miami FL   October 19th, 2007 4:41 pm ET

So I see Limbaugh's still an loudmouthed idiot with nothing interesting to say…

Jay, Vancouver, WA   October 19th, 2007 4:44 pm ET

Good for Rush…it was a brilliant political countermove, and agree with him or disagree, you have to commend him for it. And the fact that the kids of Marines and Law Enforcement killed in action will be getting these scholarships…that's just unbelievably cool.

E. Cibelli - Dayton, MD   October 19th, 2007 4:45 pm ET

Nice to see that you finally picked up this huge story. However, you could have buried it further down. This was a GIGANTIC black eye for those 41 Democrats, especially Harry Reid, who used an intentional lie and distortion to bully, gag and silence a talk show host and the American public.

Joe, York Pa.   October 19th, 2007 4:48 pm ET

You the man Rush. I'm surprised CNN even put this on.

MCD, San Francisco, CA   October 19th, 2007 4:49 pm ET

OMG, as much as I admire Reid… Rush would tear him to shreds! Don't do it Mr. Reid!! You are too much of a gentleman to go toe to toe with that loud-mouthed bully!

EB Rideout   October 19th, 2007 4:52 pm ET

Just shows how revered the 41 signers of the document are. If they were "nobodys" the bidding would never have gone so high.

As for Rush, It's time for him to stop whining and bawling about how the Dems are picking on him. I wouldn't pay five cents for his autograph.

Joseph, austin, tx   October 19th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

way to go Rush, way to turn a negative into a positive situation for the military men and women.

Actually, Rush is the liar in this case. He doctored the audio from September 26th to delete oveer a minute of his show to make it LOOK like he was talking about one specific soldire (Jesse Macbeth) when he used that "phony soldier" line, when in truth he used that line to smear every soldier that disagrees with Rush's position on the war.

Media Matters picked up on this right away. I'm waiting for the rest of the mainstream media to expose Rush Limbaugh for the liar that he is.

RB, from the bay state   October 19th, 2007 4:56 pm ET

As long as the likes of Limbaugh keep beating the drums for this stupid war there will be no end to the troops and their families that need assistance when and if they return home.

Rush thinks that money will heal all the harm that has been done to our young. Not so.

Chris, Huntsville, Alabama   October 19th, 2007 4:57 pm ET

Interesting to note that Reid did not respond to Limbaugh's request that the Democratic signatories of the letter also match the winning bid with a charitable contribution.

As for what Limbaugh "really" meant by the statement…

First of all, in spite of his numerous faults, I don't believe Limbaugh would make a deliberate attempt to broadly smear all military personnel who oppose the war. The high profile situation of the really fake soldier who lied about serving in Iraq was almost certainly what he was referring to.

Secondly, as much as it hurts to say it, Rush was right in protesting that the letter was an attempt by government officials to deprive him of his job by throwing political pressure around. Sure, Clear Channel has the right to fire or censure him. His audience also has the right to not listen. Specific individuals may have the right to sue him for libel or slander. But, saying "We're powerful Senators and we don't approve of what he says so you'd better do something about it" is sleazy, particularly when it requires a bit of twisting of meaning (something Limbaugh should know something about, since he does it frequently as well).

Gay Carroll, J.D., Sacramento, CA   October 19th, 2007 4:58 pm ET

Thank God for people like Rush Limbaugh who stood up to those lying weak-minded arrogant Senators. How dare senators on the floor of the Senate intentionally SLANDER and DEFAME a private citizen! And based on WHAT THEY KNEW TO BE A LIE. It is beyond belief. It is unreal. I will fight harder than ever to see that Republicans win elections–and to get rid of arrogant senators who abuse power such as all those who signed the letter against Rush Limbaugh.

Linda Magid, Plano, TX   October 19th, 2007 4:58 pm ET

Totally incredible. Good that money is going to something to help others, but THIS situation "represents one of the most outrageous abuses of federal power in modern American history"?! I am flabbergasted. The President destroyed Habeas Corpus, one of America's founding principles, along with other great reasons to be an American with his ridiculous war. I don't think this "issue" is even in the same category (and I think Senator Reid was acting kind of silly about it). But, then again, Rush does like to make himself more important than he actually is.

stirfrysteve   October 19th, 2007 4:59 pm ET

You Quote Reid as syaing "…Mark Mays…" When in Fact Reid said "May" throughtout the whole speech. He could not even get the name Right, and you violated a pricipal journalistic standard of qouting a person's words!

Ralph Tedesco, Sydney, NSW, Australia   October 19th, 2007 5:00 pm ET

ok, you've included this (because you had to), but failed to explain it.
i guess you hope your readers will be TOO STUPID to understand what this letter represents.

Bradley Schaubs, Greeley, CO   October 19th, 2007 5:01 pm ET

$2.1 million…exactly the same amount that Hillary beat Obama by in the last fundraising quarter. Coincidence?

Well, at least now I can no longer say that Republicans never did any good. However, honest as Limbaugh's intentions are, I still think his comments were disrespectful to the troops.

If I had $2.1 million, I'd donate it to Obama's campaign funds. Which is better: Obama's signature, or Obama as US president?

Obama'08

Andy, Tampa, Florida   October 19th, 2007 5:01 pm ET

Limbaugh shows, again, that he is a lying scumbag. The government never tried to "take away his living." This idiot has a little trouble with actual truth, though he's exceptionally good at distorting it.

William Smith, Manchester NH   October 19th, 2007 5:02 pm ET

Alexander, I notice that you didn't point out that Reid was wrong in his rebuking Limbaugh. Rush was talking about actual phony soldiers who are being investigated by the FBI.

Richard, West Palm Beach, FL   October 19th, 2007 5:02 pm ET

So it cost Rush Limbaugh $2.1 million out of his pocket to hide the foot in his mouth. If he had as much "integrity" when the Boat Vets lied, he would have made as big an issue then.

While all his supporters who can only "ditto" whatever he says, rejoice, they probably are proud of him for faking a tape that fooled them.

Val Davydov, Agawam, MA   October 19th, 2007 5:02 pm ET

When "phony soldiers" accusations by Reid & Co. first came out against Rush I said on this blog that that was one of the most embarrassing moments for Democrats. This is ten times more embarrassing than that. Shame on them.

Reid - you are holding on to your last straw honey, and please take Nancy with you when you come crumbling down.

Rick, Fort Worth, TX   October 19th, 2007 5:02 pm ET

I knew Rush was powerful, Wayne, but had no idea that he could actually doctor what I heard when I listened to the show live, before he went and "doctored the audio and transcript on his web site"…beware of those black helicopters in Greenville!!

dan luparello; sun city west, AZ   October 19th, 2007 5:03 pm ET

If Senator Reid was at fault at all, it was because he gave the center ring of the circus to its biggest clown. Demagogues like Limbaugh are best ignored totally; maybe then they will slip back into the slime they came out of.

Larry Shea Emery, SD   October 19th, 2007 5:04 pm ET

I am not amazed that Harry Reid had the chutzpah to lie about what Limbaugh said, then try to get his job derailed, then take partial credit for Limbaugh "turning lemons into lemonade." Limbaugh is a true patriot.

JK Ashburn, Virginia   October 19th, 2007 5:05 pm ET

Limbaugh's point, in case you missed it, was to note how Congresscreatures abuse their own "power" by addressing a letter to the head of a company that happens to be in an industry regulated by the federal government. Mark Mays did the right thing and ignored the request. Congresscreature predilection for wanting to silence detractors by any formal means would violate the First Amendment. So, they resort to unofficial bullying tactics. This is abuse of power and Rush called them on it. Good for him!

This sort of congressional behavior, along with related abuse of power such as earmarks, has got to stop. These clowns are far to arrogant for the good of the American people. Folks — wake up and throw them out of office.

James, Corpus Christi, TX   October 19th, 2007 5:06 pm ET

Hey it just took $2million out of Rush's pockets and gave it to a good cause…Awesome…Bet it was purchased by a Dem..They get a $2 million tax deduction, get to destroy the letter, and make Rush shell out two million of his own stash..Win-win baby…

James, Phoenix AZ   October 19th, 2007 5:07 pm ET

Wonder why Harry Reid won't go on Rush's show to discuss this matter? Seems he was outraged enough to make public statements and write a letter to Rush's boss.

Hmmm… I wonder if Harry is ONLY about political theater as opposed to addressing the person directly you're offended by?

I still think Rush should publically say, "IF you're a serving soldier and felt my comments were aimed at you - I apologize…. but for the true phoney soldiers - who claim to have served but simply flunked out of boot camp - you should be ashamed!".

Billy, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida   October 19th, 2007 5:09 pm ET

Wow, you guys that admire Rush so much are really, really right wing. It's amazing, you ultra right wingers, those of you who think Rush is sooo great, how you put party ahead of country. Harry Reid was right to write this letter, the other's right to sign it. The true abuse of power is how drug addict Limbaugh uses his show and those of his FOX news compatriates to paint himself the vicitm. Look at the mess this unchecked President has gotten us into. World War III is not to far off.

GMAN, Irving, TX   October 19th, 2007 5:09 pm ET

Why praise Rush for this, he did nothing but be the idiot he always is. Mays is the creative one. The only thing positive here is that a good cause got some money. Rush is still trash, but still has a constitutional right to be trash.

R. Weber, Panama City Beach, Florida   October 19th, 2007 5:10 pm ET

Rush probably has no idea of what he actually said. When did he take his last drug screen?

bmili, flower mound, tx   October 19th, 2007 5:11 pm ET

im confused as to why CNN made no mention of this going to the Marine and Law Enforcement charity or the fact that Rush is matching the $2 million dollars, i guess that would be too much.

RDA Philadelphia, PA   October 19th, 2007 5:14 pm ET

Nice job Rush! ……Why is there no hyperlink for The Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation in this article? You have one for Billary and Obama. Thanks for posting this Clinton News Network!

Neill C., Montgomery, Al   October 19th, 2007 5:15 pm ET

Harry Reid "blinked" on the Senate Floor today and tried to take credit for the good out of this.

And for the person who said he doctored the tape, you should have your head examined. I was listening and he did not doctor anything. Media matter lied about it and then Harry Reid made a fool of himself by believing media matters' lies. Media matters is Hillary's right hand man.

I applaud CNN for reporting this because it proves the Democrats will stop at nothing to take away our liberties, trash the Constitution, and lie about anything and everything to gain and keep power. They should be embarrassed as hell about this situation. Oh, and still waiting for Democrats to denounce Stark's comments which were way worse than what they claim Rush did. What makes it worse is that we know Stark said what he did, but we alsoi know that Rush did not say what media matters claims.

Just another smear campaign to censor a private citizen. It didn't work and Reid tried to make the most of the egg on his face. That didn't work, either.

John from America   October 19th, 2007 5:15 pm ET

Well, I wonder what the phony drug prescription scrips would sell for on eBay.Com? Old loud mouth druggie has plenty to criticize others about but, what about Rush's law breaking drug ISSUES!

U.S. Marine cbh, Camp Pendleton CA   October 19th, 2007 5:16 pm ET

Amazing how easy is for Rush to support a war when he is comfortably in an air-conditioned studio. He is nothing more than a pain killer-addicted nut!

Bob, Washington, DC   October 19th, 2007 5:16 pm ET

Why are we waiting time on someone as irrelevant like Mr. Limbaugh when there is real news to report on? Isn't something going on with Lindsey Lohan or Britney Spears that CNN should rush to air as "Breaking News". Thanks, CNN, for giving me one more reason to stay away.

Unless Rush gives this $2,000,000 to an independant charity, such as one which benifits troops injured in IRAK I would assume that Rush gave this money to this person to use for a phony buy from him. This story smells.

Neill C., Montgomery, Al   October 19th, 2007 5:18 pm ET

If Reid thought it was such a great thing, why didn't he match Rush's match? Probably because he doesn't give one whit about the troops. But, there seems to be overwhelming support for Rush amongst the troops.

Susan, West Palm Beach, Fl   October 19th, 2007 5:18 pm ET

Limbaugh is irrelevant. It could have been anyone that Reid had written about and it would have raised money. People know that we are making history as the country has never been in worse shape and we are carving our new territory. We're greedy idiots "taking pictures" as the bus drives to the bottom. How pathetic.

Harry Reid is the fool in this situation, not Limbaugh. With Congress' approval rating at a whopping 11 percent (far below that of Bush, by the way), you'd think he would have bigger fish to fry than going after a talk-show host. Nice priorities.

Phillip, MO   October 19th, 2007 5:22 pm ET

Hey, get it right CNN. In his speech Reid kept refering to Mark Mays as "Mark May". This clown actually thinks we believe he is sincere about this letter contributing to fallen Marines families when he doesn't even know who he's talking about. Pure theatre Reid, pure theatre. Now go do something useful with our hard earned tax dollars.

Randall, Greenville, SC   October 19th, 2007 5:24 pm ET

"I don't believe Limbaugh would make a deliberate attempt to broadly smear all military personnel who oppose the war."

Chris, are you paying attention? But, technically you're right, he would only smear all military personnel who oppose the war AND MAKE THEIR VIEWS PUBLIC. Those are the only ones.

Mike, Macomb IL   October 19th, 2007 5:24 pm ET

And in a unique twist of fate, Harry Reid tries to take credit for what Rush did….And what's with the quote?

“But without qualification, Mark Mays, the owner of the network that has Rush Limbaugh, and Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they're auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a worthwhile cause.”

Wow, really got a firm grasp on the obvious there Harry…Pretty sure Rush knows it's going to a worthwhile cause, since he chose it!

Ted mowers Wellesley Island NY   October 19th, 2007 5:25 pm ET

Harry Reid is a dope. He is trying to salvage something…anything out of his ridiculous blunder…All 40 Democrats who signed this letter should be embarrassed. That includes MRS. Bill Clinton

Harry Reid is a wimpy, loud mouthed, sissy little liberal that can't take the heat. Rush destroyed him…and now all the little softy can do is praise that the money raised will go to a good cause…Reid is limp as a noodle…really makes me want to be Democrat….Not. Go Rush

Tom, Texas, USA   October 19th, 2007 5:31 pm ET

Very Hairy Reid is a blithering idiot. The poor fool is actually taking credit, along with other haters of the U.S. military who signed the smear letter (e.g., Hillary Rodham, Dick Durbin, Ted Kennedy, et al.), for the millions of dollars raised for the families of Marines killed in action.

Lawrence, KS   October 19th, 2007 5:31 pm ET

After Jimmy Carter and Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi may go down as the most insignificant members of US governemnt in modern history. The only real job they do there is to insure that they stay there. They talk alot but really have no position on anything.

Billy in FLA: you are "really, really" left wing. I thought lefties had the market cornered on compassion and love, but you spew hate, and hate unrelated to the story, at that.

Reid's attack on Rush was based on a lie, pure and simple. But as long as Rush gets attacked, the truth doesn't matter to some. Do some research.

And if WWIII isn't far off, it isn't because of Bush's response to terrorism. The US & our interests were being attacked over the last few decades (Marine barracks, WTC '93, embassy bombing, Khobar Towers, USS Cole, to name a few). A response was long, long overdue.

Thinking America is at fault here doesn't make you a bigger or more intelligent person. You just look foolish. We're screwed if someone of your mindset becomes President.

Washington Boro PA   October 19th, 2007 5:33 pm ET

Not being a Limbaugh fan makes this an easy comment to make. Reid and the others completely misrepresented his statement which was about he phony soldiers ala Jessee MacBeth who are phony soldiers. As usual, Reid and others who like to talk about those 'right-wingers' are doing exactly what they say others are doing; lying through their teeth and practicing personal destruction politics. MacBeth and the others are phony soldiers and Reid and the others got caught using the power of the government to attempt to silence a political big mouth. Reid and the others are no better than the Mafia and certainly worse. At least the mob doesn't lie to go after their enemies, the mob is pretty straight forward in their intent.

Jim

Neill C., Montgomery, Al   October 19th, 2007 5:33 pm ET

Rush didn't smear the military and the military knows it. He smeared the people who claim to be military and aren't, and then those same people use their made-up military backgrounds to criticize the war.

His comments were specifically for the guy who claimed he witnessed atrocities in Iraq - the guy had never even been to Iraq! The fact that people here keep reiterating bad information just proves to me liberals don't care for the truth.

Moe, NY   October 19th, 2007 5:33 pm ET

Sarah, Kansas City, MO   October 19th, 2007 5:36 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh has no credibility. Why anyone considers him an expert at anything (except whenacquiring narcotics) is beyond me.

I consider him to be part of reason this country has become so devisive and bordering on losing all standing in the world.

The right wing in this country no only one thing: how to spread hatered and intolerance and Rush Limbaugh has been a huge part of that.

Jeannie, Sacramento, CA   October 19th, 2007 5:37 pm ET

Mark Mays refusing to repudiate Limbaugh's remarks doesn't make them less offensive. It's like Bill O'Reilly paying a multi-million dollar settlement to Andrea Mackris. Just because the case didn't go to trial doesn't mean O'Reilly wasn't guilty. Inasmuch as Limbaugh's remarks may have thrilled the chickenhawk warmongers at the right, a large majority of Americans found his comments repugnant. This is the majority that believes opposing the war IS NOT unpatriotic, regardless of what Limbaugh and his ilk say.

What a waste of taxpayer's time. Instead of writing letters about what Rush Limbaugh has to say why doesn't Congress try and tackle real issues like health care, education, Social Security and Terrorism?
Represent the people of the USA don't stand behind some saber-rattling rhetoric claiming to support our armed forces.
Make a difference Congress. You're showing, as always, you can't muster the guts to do anything meaningful so hide behind the smoke-screen which is flag waving. We need to vote all these louts out!

Becky Missouri   October 19th, 2007 5:42 pm ET

The ego maniac probably either bought the letter himself of funneled the money to someone to buy it. The letter was right on target. Rush trashed the veteran and the 12 year old SCHIP child AND THEN LIED ABOUT DOING IT. EVEN EDITED THE TRANSCRIP OF HIS PROGRAM. THE MAN IS A LOSER! ! !

Jon Anderson Steelton, PA   October 19th, 2007 5:44 pm ET

Leave it up to the left to insist that Rush talking about Jesse Macbeth one minute 50 secs after the phony soldier comment means that the two weren't in the same context. Since when is one minute 50 sec a long enough span to say the comment was in a different context? The show is 3 hours long, for heaven's sake!!! Rush discusses topics like in this fashion ALL THE TIME! If you listen to the show, you would know this.

Ed, Chicago, IL   October 19th, 2007 5:46 pm ET

Not surprisingly, the CNN account omitted the small little fact that Media Matters/Move-On completely manipulated Rush's comments, and intentionally misrepresented them, in an attempted tit-for-tat for Move-On's hideous 'General Betrayus" ad. And then Reid has the gall to claim credit for having written the letter? What a joke. The only one who should MOVE ON is dingy Harry!

This comedian Limbaugh has proven to be at least of some use by auctioning the letter and matching the auction amount (if he keeps his promise to do so) although Senator Reid and the other senators and the winning bidder deserve all the credit for this.

It just amazes me how many people Idolize the worst Senate Leader in history? 11% approval rating? Shouldn't you all be over on Media Matters?

It's too bad that progressives can't look and research past the talking points they get in their email. You might just be phoney Americans. Rush released video and transcripts for all to read.

Jeff, Cincinnati OH   October 19th, 2007 5:51 pm ET

I'm shocked that CNN didn't bury this one. Harry Reid ended up looking like a stumbling, bumbling fool. What is the Senate doing, taking the time to put this letter together anyway? Last time I checked, they were paid by U.S. tax dollars. This is not what we pay them for. I'm surprised there's not more outrage about that! The Dems need to stop taking all their time (and you and I are paying them while they're doing it) trying to smear and spin whatever the President, any Republican or Conservative does or says, and start doing something productive for the country. How bout working on a plan that would actually stop illegal aliens from crossing the border…illegally. (Illegal - look it up if you don't know what it means.) There's a radical idea…DO WHAT YOU'RE BEING PAID TO DO. If you worked for a private company, you'd be fired for not doing your jobs!

2.1 million bucks for a letter? Hmmm … woonder how much money conservatives can come up with when they have to fight against a Hillary Clinton presidency. The crooked press keeps touting the democrats' fundraising. Don't count your chickens yet.

Steve Wessel, Fremont Nebraska   October 19th, 2007 5:53 pm ET

It's amazing that these democrats are still obsessed with the thought that they are running against either Rush (Not running or president although is more than qualified)or Bush (Can't run Again). So Loser Reid and the Likes can get nothing done in the house…Lied (oop's I forgot DemoIdiots Don't Lie)to there Deminions about what they would do… AND NOW want credit for what Rush does…. Absolutely Pitiful!!!!!

Scott, Jackson, MO.   October 19th, 2007 5:53 pm ET

This is a perfect example of how stupid the Dems are. Picking a fight with Rush. Are you crazy? Dems you better pick on someone your own size if you don't like being humiliated with the whole country watching.

Nancy, Jackson, MO   October 19th, 2007 5:54 pm ET

Now this IS funny! I'm sure there are 41 Senate Democrats that couldn't be happier with the outcome and very glad to have done their part. I'm guessing that Reid was not the only one that was surprised that it brought that much. Now it will be interesting to see if Limbaugh actually puts his money where his big mouth is.

joseph austin tx   October 19th, 2007 5:55 pm ET

I listened to the show live and i could understand he was talking about mcbeth. not all soldiers who disagree with the war are phony soldiers, and rush never said that. I dont think by the way 99% of the people who will be helped by this are complaining, and also the 41 dumbasses that signed this had nothing to do with this making money. It was all Rush making lemons out of lemonade, and all the people that support him and more importantly the troops.

Gary, Detroit, Mich.   October 19th, 2007 5:56 pm ET

Limbaugh is a drug addled pig. Thank -you.

Wayne, Greenville, TX   October 19th, 2007 5:57 pm ET

You go Rush!!!!!!

Wayne, I heard the original show and NOTHING was doctored. Why dont you stop lying?

Posted By David, Upstate NY : October 19, 2007 5:37 pm
Then how come Media matter's audio is a minute and a half longer, all between the point where Limbaugh uses the4 "phony soldiers" line and when he first mentions Jesse macBeth? I believe it's all you dittoheads who are lying in a sorry attempt to defend Rush - an undenfendable, drug-addicted, draft-dodging, thrice-divorced, closeted homosexual.

(Ask Rush about his arrest in the company of a male prostitute when he was working in Pittsburgh in the '70s under the pseudonym "Jeff Christie".)

Richard-------Winfield,Al   October 19th, 2007 5:57 pm ET

I can understand why some rich republican would make such a bid to try to make RUSH look good.

Greg Okc Ok   October 19th, 2007 5:57 pm ET

Why is it that the dems and their suporters always have to include personal attacks when they dissagree with some ones ideas. Calling someone a druged out loudmouth does nothing to further their cause. Rush had an addiction to pain killers. He has passed several drug tests as part of his probation. These atempts to silence their critics by playing the bully has got to stop. The Senetors screwed up! Their attack dog media matters screwed up. Now the charity has $4.2 million. Reid,Obama,Clinton and several others can and should match the bid. Remember the Dems are the party with heart.. Put up or shut up!!!!

Steven Furtado, Kunkletown PA   October 19th, 2007 5:59 pm ET

As much as I disagree with Rush on many, many, MANY issues, I have to give him props for taking a silly situation like this and using it to do some good. I mean, the man may be a loud, self-important blowhard. But, really, what talk radio host isn't a loud, self-important blowhard?

I never in a million years would believe I'm saying this, but Go Rush!

Robyn Harris   October 19th, 2007 6:00 pm ET

Now I am waiting for Mr. Limbaugh to honor his committment and donate $2.1 million to the Marine Corps.
Such generousity needs to be commended and reported on every day until he makes his donation.

Mark Portland, OR   October 19th, 2007 6:00 pm ET

Why don't you go to the root of the issue. Nothing more than a lie by Mr. Reid twisting words and then he attempts to take credit. DNC has become stalinistic!!!!

Chris Peters, Atlanta, GA   October 19th, 2007 6:00 pm ET

Go Rush! This guy has the guts to say what so many of us want to say and cut right through the lies and smears cast out against him and is probably the greatest roll model of our time.

josh   October 19th, 2007 6:01 pm ET

Reid can "praise" Limbaugh all he wants, but he has still yet to apologize to Limbaugh for Slandering him and trying to use his power as a government official to ruin Limbaugh career.
By the way, Limbaugh is donating 100% of the raised money to a charity that sends military kids of fallen soilders and police to college. He is also matching with 2.1 million additional dollars!

Limbaugh: $4.2 million
Reid: ZIP

Tom, Boulder, CO   October 19th, 2007 6:01 pm ET

It's hilarious to read what the liberals have written in this comment section. It's obvious how hate-filled they are.

It was good to see CNN FINALLY pick up on this story.

BTW, check out the politics main page and take a look at the pictures for the "Meet the Candidates" section. Pretty picture of Barak and Billary, then these ugly pictures of nobody Brownback and Hunter…. Just funny….

stirlingmclaughlin   October 19th, 2007 6:03 pm ET

Maybe now the Marines can afford the body armor Bush refuses to give them!

Jeremy   October 19th, 2007 6:03 pm ET

I think Rush Limbaugh is a vile, disgusting, loudmouthed, drug addict. That being said no one in political power should try to control the media which, unfortunately, includes Rush. Rush has the right to free speach just like we all do (which includes liberals, though Rush would like to change that law). If that right is taken away this country is no longer a free, open society.

To call it the greatest abuse of federal power in modern history however is not only an overstatement it shows either blindness or ignorance. Considering the fact that George Bush completely and repeatedly disregards and disobeyes the constitution would qualify as a lot worse.
I would consider the detention and torture of American citizens without charges far worse. I would consider the illegal wire tapping of American citizens far worse. I would consider the illegal and immoral war much worse. I would consider the systematic arrest of protesters much worse. I would consider the lies, and the stealing and the utter corruption at every level of this administration much worse. Wouldn't any rational person?

Jeff, Cincinnati OH   October 19th, 2007 6:04 pm ET

Sam from Lincoln - did you read your comment before you hit send? Do you know who bought it? Do you know what organization is behind the woman who bought it and what they're purpose is? Do you know where the money is going?

This is a problem I see over and over with the left. No one does their homework before they comment. There's a cliche you might know…think before you speak. Get the facts before you speak! If more people would do that, and then accept the facts for what they are, we wouldn't be having these kinds of non-productive, hateful conversations.

Brian, Hartford, CT   October 19th, 2007 6:07 pm ET

Slam MediaMatters all you want. They've got the unedited audio. That doesn't lie, unlike Rush. I know right-wingers hate those little things called "facts" and "proof," but this is ridiculous. The unedited audio is posted. That's proof that Rush doctored the tape and transcript, which appeared AFTER the MM story was posted. Explain that.

End of story. It's really not that hard to understand!

Laura, Walnut Creek, CA   October 19th, 2007 6:08 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh, a man who was deferred from military service because of an anal cyst and a "knee injury" that didn't keep him out of a single high school football game, referred to any serviceperson who disagreed with him as a phony soldier. The original audio is out there at several websites, listen to it.

Chris, Denver, CO   October 19th, 2007 6:08 pm ET

"It got this kind of money because it represents one of the most outrageous abuses of federal power in modern American history"

Not even Rush can actually believe this, can he? A letter of admonishment is an outrageous abuse of federal power, while torture, rendition and warrantless wiretapping are a-ok? What an ego this drug-crazed pervert has!

Ed , Lost Pines, Texas   October 19th, 2007 6:09 pm ET

"It got this kind of money because it represents one of the most outrageous abuses of federal power in modern American history, and that is what makes it a collector's item."

This is a totally ridiculous statement. This is petty compared to the Patriotic Act, the abuse of the FISA court, why, nearly every step the Bush Administration has made in the last 5 years. This letter is not even in the same universe, let alone the same league!

Al Frank   October 19th, 2007 6:11 pm ET

Way to go Rush! You've trump those do nothing, sub-intelligent Senators! Beautiful!

Wayne, Greenville, TX   October 19th, 2007 6:11 pm ET

HERE IS THE RUSH ECONOMIC POLICY, I THINK, FROM PAGE 1414, VOL. 4, 1968 "CATHOLIC REFERENCE ENCYCLOPEDIA," DEFINING "PRIVATE PROPERTY." "THE RIGHT OF PRIVATE PROPERTY IS ONE OF THE IMPORTANT TEACHINGS OF THE CHURCH, A RIGHT SHE VIGOROUSLY DEFENDS AGAINST THOSE POLITICAL SYSTEMS THAT SEEK TO REPLACE PRIVATE WITH PUBLIC OWNERSHIP…PIUS X1 IN HIS 1931 ENCYCLICAL LETTER 'QUADRAGESIMO ANNO' STATES THAT 'THE RIGHT TO PRIVATE PROPERTY WAS GIVEN TO MAN BY NATURE OR RATHER BY THE CREATOR HIMSELF." RUSH WAS FOR WARS VS CUBA, N. NAM, MOSSADEGH'S IRAN, ALLENDE'S CHILE, SANDINISTA NICARAGUA AND IRAQ– ALL OF THEM BEING FOR NATIONALIZATION OF MAJOR INDUSTRIES. CAPITALISM IS PARASITIC AND EXTRACTIVE AND RUINS THE MIDDLE CLASS WITH ITS BUILT-IN BOOMS AND BUSTS. PEOPLE ARE CRIPPLED OR KILLED IN IRAQ TO DIVIDE ITS OIL PROFITS AMONG INVESTORS. I LOVE THE TROOPS BY WANTING TO GET THEM OUT OF DANGER. HUGE TAXPAID INDUCEMENTS MAKE THEM RISK LIVES AND BROKEN FAMILIES. INHUMANE INVESTORS START WARS AND BUY SHARES IN WAR SUPPLY CORPORATIONS. THERE IS NOTHING FAKE ABOUT WANTING TO SPARE SOLDIERS FROM COLOSTOMY BAGS, WHEELCHAIRS, LIVES ON MORPHINE AND OTHER PERSONAL CATASTROPHIES OF WAR.

Tone, Fort Mill, SC   October 19th, 2007 6:17 pm ET

To all those that claim they listened to Rush and later say the audio and transcripts were altered… hmmm?? How often do you listen? Is Rush making you re-think your views? Would love to hear any one of them call in to Rush's broadcast and call Rush on it.

Sharon, Troy, MI   October 19th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

"Rush Limbaugh" - whenever I hear that name it brings to mind that wonderful morning a few years ago when a dear friend called to tell me about Rush's arrest for drugs. Now that was eating crow!

D.W. Laconia, NH   October 19th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

Auctioning off an official letter from the Senate Majority leader that was signed by 40 senators shows the absolute contempt and disregard that Clear Channel's Mark Mays and Rush Limbaugh have for our elected officials that are not 100% ultra right wing and to their liking. They are a national embarrasment and for them to claim that they are "patroitic" is disgusting.
Rush and his owners are nothing but lying hypocrites, whom I'm sure did nothing but cheer when the government admonished MoveOn.org for questioning the political dog and pony show put on by Gen.Petraus for George Bush Inc. But when Rush slanders U.S military personel who do not agree with him and then called to account on it, he cries that he is a victim?
Sickening hypocrisy to the point of the absurd….

Doug: Columbus, Ohio   October 19th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

Alexander Mooney and CNN : Nice job on reporting of the Limbaugh letter today. That story was fairly done with quotes from Rush's show, and no other major news web site is providing that. We appreciate it.

Hiram, Miami, Florida   October 19th, 2007 6:21 pm ET

You failed to mention that Mr. Limbaugh is matching the money raised on E-Bay, and that Senator Reid and the other Democrats who signed the letter are not !!

Ethan, Brooklyn, NY   October 19th, 2007 6:23 pm ET

I love seeing the Ditto-heads come out of the woodworks on this one ridiculous topic. Who cares that the policies Rush supports have led to the death of:

3,832 US TROOPS.

Three Thousand, Eight Hundred and Thirty-Two. DEAD.

And Rush has the gall to pat himself on his back for a donation of $2million?

Totally bogus.

The fact that the fund is for the kids of troops that he cheer leaded on their way to their deaths (while sitting on his ass smoking cigars) is just absolutely sickening.

Harry Reid is an idiot and loser for getting caught up in this foolishness. Rush is a total fraud and a disgrace to conscious thought. The ones who really lose out on this idiotic debate are THE KIDS WHO HAVE TO GROW UP WITHOUT A FATHER. But oh, heckuva job Rushie. Sickening BS.

Bradley Schaubs, Greeley, CO   October 19th, 2007 6:24 pm ET

Limbaugh is an fat, angry little man. He makes me laugh and feel good about the fact that I'm a Democrat.

Joe, DC   October 19th, 2007 6:25 pm ET

So the phony talk show host and the phony Senate leader have put to rest their phony controversy. And the whole mess is reported as news by this phony news organization. God help us all.

Allan, Tulsa, Oklahoma   October 19th, 2007 6:25 pm ET

Limbaugh is a proven liar who twists facts to present his own warped opinions. He does a disservice to America and Americans. It is shocking that he continues to be allowed to pollute the air waves.

Patriot and that's all there is to it. San Diego, CA   October 19th, 2007 6:29 pm ET

Is this the best we can do as American people? Why do we concentrate on the red button issues that divide us? Why can't we look at the real issues like jobs, medical care, and affordable housing? Why are we not holding ourselves to a higher standard? Why do we as a country allow talk show hosts or radio personalities to project our image to the world as our mouth pieces? We are better than this as Americans and we should really think about electing new blood to Washington. We should seek more independent minded candidates that think about the big picture that will unite us and not divide us. I urge everyone on this page to refrain from attacking each other. 2 wrongs do not make a right. We all love our troops. We all love America. We should act like.

Don, NY, NY   October 19th, 2007 6:30 pm ET

REID'S SLAM ON LIMBAUGH? ONCE AGAIN, CNN LYING AND CREATING NEWS. THIS BACKFIRED ON REID AND THE CNN HEADLINE SHOULD READ: "LIMBAUGH'S SLAM ON REID."

You people at CNN are despicable, predictable and incredible.

What a joke you have become.

Paul, nashville, tn   October 19th, 2007 6:32 pm ET

All of you and all the democrats that spoke out on this issue are ignorant and petty, because you took one little thing out of what he said instead of seeing the whole discussion. You are taking it out of context and are just trying to find something else to keep people from seeing the problems with your party by pointing out all the "so-called" problems with people that support the republican party even to this pitiful point. TYPICAL!!!

john williams san diego, ca.   October 19th, 2007 6:32 pm ET

serious discussion…their has been bad, incompetent, lazy, self serving, and confused Senators in our history, but harry reid will forever be the most stupid dunderhead ever…and that doesn't include corrupt with his 3 sons and 1 son in law being on his payroll.as lobbyist…keep donating to him liberal loonies

John, Boston, MA   October 19th, 2007 6:35 pm ET

Ethan, Ethan, Ethan. Using your logic Abraham Lincon and FDR are a hundred times worse than Rush. It is so funny to hear the weak pacifists make comments about people who are not in the service that support the US troops and their Commander In Chief. Let's turn it around, YOU WHO HAVE NEVER FOUGHT IN A WAR HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING AGAINST IT.

If you don't like your country and if the flag gets you mad then you might want to move to Iran. Maybe then you will appreciate the great nation you are lucky enough to live in.

Rush and Fox news are the counter to the liberal media. Oh, wait i forgot, Chris Mathews, Olberman, Carville, Couric, Rather are all objective fair journalists.

Brett, Boone Iowa   October 19th, 2007 6:35 pm ET

Thanks to Harry Reid's complete incompetence, the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation has received a 4.2 million dollar donation.

Dave Howell Anchorage, Alaska   October 19th, 2007 6:42 pm ET

Limbaugh continues to miss the message that the citizens of America are relying to him about his biaised inflammatory extremist remarks. If he were ever to experience enlightenment and listen to what the majority of Americans are truly thinking and saying, it would be a day allowing everyone to experience a fresh breathe of fresh air.

Jim, Medford, OR   October 19th, 2007 6:43 pm ET

This is news? Americans are falling back into the corporate right wing trap again: Who will win the soundbyte contest? Americans are victims of unprecedented corruption at the hands of Bush, the republican party, and military contractors (many of whom sponsor CNN). How many millionaires has this war produced? Rush is just one example. Anyone who challenges them gets smeared in the media (CNN, Fox, etc.). You can bet this stupidity will be front page news on Fox and Murdoch outlets. Rush is a heroin addicted (oxycontin is synthetic heroine -the media never mentions that), draft dodging psychopath who travels to the Dom. Republic in a private jet with suitcase full of viagra. What do you "family values" fans of Rush think he was doing there? Looking at cigar factories? Is that why you need viagra?

Ed,Ellenville,New York   October 19th, 2007 6:45 pm ET

This is fodder for the Republican base. We will show up for the election in large numbers. The libs are trying to do anything to get the american people and they are utter failures.

Ethan, Brooklyn, NY   October 19th, 2007 6:52 pm ET

John John John. I'm a pacifist because Rush and Bush and sheep like you have caused the deaths of 3,800 GIs in IRAQ? Hey, remember Bin Laden???? I'm all FOR getting him! I saw the towers fall with my own eyes, so don't give me your BS, trying to impugn my patriotism. That's just disgusting. But you're right on one issue: I personally do not fight in wars. I am personally morally opposed to killing people and applaud the heroes who volunteer to preserve protect and defend our country. I love the American flag and find that people like you simply don't understand what this country is all about. For shame.

Chris Matthews? Liberal? How's the crack in Boston these days John? Carville is not a journalist. Get your facts straight.

And btw, you do a GREAT job of changing the subject from the issue I presented in my post:

3,832 DEAD.

God Bless our troops. Bring them home from Iraq. Get bin Laden furchrissake. It's been 6+ YRS since 9/11. Jeez. When will you GOP dittoheads get it? Unbelievable.

Eric, Cleveland OH   October 19th, 2007 7:01 pm ET

Phillip Bunn , Bailey NC   October 19th, 2007 7:02 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh "is" what's wrong with America. He is the Big Daddy of Global Warming, The Big Daddy of Oil, The Big Daddy of Racism, The Big Daddy of War, The Big Daddy of oppressive, vomiting political leaders trying to nationalize and confine the free spirit of America in a concentration camp of Global Operant Development (GOD).

ed niles illinois   October 19th, 2007 7:02 pm ET

Tom Zuke Waukesha Wi   October 19th, 2007 7:06 pm ET

How about clarifying that Rush never made those comments.

John, Honolulu, HI   October 19th, 2007 7:10 pm ET

The real scary issue behind all of this is that we have two presidential hopefuls, Obama and Hillary, who would dare join in on attacking a private citizen. There's two problems here. 1) As presidential hopefuls, OBAMA AND HILLARY SHOULD BE PRESENTING THEMSELVES AS PROTECTORS OF THE PEOPLE, NOT PROTECTORS OF THE DEMOCRATS. 2) They obviously didn't do their research on this issue, otherwise they would not have signed that letter. Making decisions without doing the research? Haven't we learned? This doesn't sound like a president I would trust.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is now viewed favorably by 19% of American voters and unfavorably by 45%. Just 3% have a Very Favorable opinion while 22% hold a Very Unfavorable views"
After this debacle, his favorable numbers will probably go to single digits

Beth, North Bend WA   October 19th, 2007 7:14 pm ET

all of you who listen to and support Limbaugh are quite crazy, I must say. No, rather brain washed into thinking that this type of hipocracy & hate that he and others of his kind spews is somehow ok?

Tom, Midland, TX   October 19th, 2007 7:15 pm ET

Rush should be required to write the check and give it to one of the "phony soliders" who disagree with his view on the war.

If Rush were as powerful as many on this blog believe him to be, he would take one of the "phony soliders" challege to call the Iraq veteran a "phony solider" to his face.

Additionally, if Rush had as much guts as many on this blog believe he does he wouldn't have gone crying to his boss about an ad that was critical of him which was scheduled to run during his show.

Rush Limbaugh, America's favorite drug addict!!!!

Laura - Tulsa OK   October 19th, 2007 7:16 pm ET

I agree with those who say the DNC has become Stalinist because it is the Democrats who are all for "speaking out", "holding protests" and doing unorthodox things such shout out in Congressional hearings. Yet when Rush Limbaugh speaks his mind freely, he is crushed by the "free speech" crowd. Whether or not you agree with everything Rush says, it is the freedom of speech we have to preserve in this country.

LA Doc, Los Angeles, CA   October 19th, 2007 7:18 pm ET

PATHETIC. Absolutely pathetic. What a slimy, disgusting attempt by that doddering old leftist fool Reid to spin their poor attempt to paint Rush as anti-military. The only thing more laughable are the whiny, histrionic hypocrite crybabies on this blog who actually are defending the fiasco started by Reid by the typical "victim" liberal tactic. Making lame, childish insults about how Rush is fat, or drug-addicted, or really using the charity money for sordid means, etc. Hey bitter whiners, if you want to find sordid money, why don't you look at your own corrupt, vile Democrat leaders, like Shrillary. The loony, victimcrat Left that constantly brays about how they are so much better, morally, than the Right in this country should look up the definition of "hypocrite" in their PC college dictionaries.

Josh, Madison WI   October 19th, 2007 7:21 pm ET

I'm so glad Rush has his show over the public airwaves with 25 million listeners so nobody can say stupid things like it's doctored audio!

Way to go Rush. Thank you for not whining about the situation and actually standing up and doing something. You have just had a victory for everyone who has ever voted rebublican or democrate, as this was not about party in the long run, but whining political figures who couldn't handle honor and had to use what power they think they have to silence an American.

Michael, Houston, TX   October 19th, 2007 7:24 pm ET

The 41 elected officials that signed the letter basically were asking for censorship. They were asking for a revocation of the First Amendment. They are the modern day Benedict Arnold and should be tried in court for treason.

Nestor, Austin, TX   October 19th, 2007 7:25 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh is one of the biggest supporters of troops in the media, and for 'Dingy' Harry Reid to try to call Rush out as unpatriotic is stupid and shows he either doesn't know what the majority of Americans know, or he is just pandering to the 11% of America that actually approves of the work that is not getting done on capitol hill. Harry Reid and the Democratic leadership have been looking for every way they can to lose the war, when the troops on the ground are winning. Anyone who takes the word of Media Matters (a far left smear machine) needs to have their head examined. Bravo Rush for serving the 41 Democrats who signed the smear letter a turd sandwich.

Jesus Phoenix Arizona   October 19th, 2007 7:26 pm ET

I am just wondering why the media trys to make right wingers look like the good guys and liberals look like the bad guys. I am guessing there is no left wing media anymore. Plus where was all the outrage when the republican senators tried to stop Move On adds? Rush is just a right wing hack who likes to report with no facts and pure spin. It is his ilk on the air that does a disservice to our country. When we aren't given facts what good is a healthy democracy. God helps us our get our country back from these neo-conservatives who keep ruining it

jp, Honolulu, HI   October 19th, 2007 7:30 pm ET

Rush is just a fat druggie. He should know that the "most outrageous abuse of federal power in modern American history" involved several millions of public dollars, powerful Republican leaders and Kenneth Starr…

Chris, Los Angeles   October 19th, 2007 7:30 pm ET

Typical of the far right.
Slam someone, make money off it. What crap!

Ken Los Angeles, California   October 19th, 2007 7:33 pm ET

Correction for some of the people who are not familiar with where the money is going…It's not going to "The Marines" it is going to the The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation (www.mc-lef.org/). Through the continuous support of our donors, we have distributed aid with a value of more than $29,000,000.00 to eligible children. This assistance was primarily rendered to children of Marines or Federal law enforcement personnel who were killed on duty or died under extraordinary circumstances while serving our country at home or abroad. These funds enable us to provide these children with scholarships for their higher education. When a child of a United States Marine is afflicted with a physical or mental disability and requires special medical equipment or tutoring, our Foundation may grant financial assistance to that family if their personal insurance does not cover the complete cost of treatment for this child.

In addition, Rush has been a member of the Board of Directors for this charity for many years.

Hate the man if you must, spew invective's at those who show him support, but please recognize this awesome charity for the job they do.

Wayne, yes, it was edited, as another caller was on rambling about WMD's, it had ZERO, ZILCH, NADA to do with what we are talking about here, it is backed up by the transcripts.

Media matters is your typical liberal attack machine that is baseless and as usual factless, no suprise that Shrillary loves to say she started "Media matters", it is the lefts way of attempting to silence another viewpoint.

Can't beat em' Shrillary, silence em'.

Henry Waxman and another genius from California (among others) are having paid staffers read Hannity's, Rush's and other conservatives radio shows to find some type of gotcha, PAID staffers doing this people.

The entire proceeds of this auction.. the entire high bid… will be donated to The Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation, a registered charity which provides financial assistance to the children of fallen Marines and federal law enforcement officers.

Rush Limbaugh serves on the Board of this organization and has been active on its behalf.

So for you naysayers and haters, he sits on the board of this great foundation and has been doing it for years.

The MSM must have missed that fact.

Maybe Larry Craig went to the post office that day, story at 11:00.

Do you still think he hates the military or would ever disparage them if he gives his OWN time, effort and yes, money for the cause for OVER twenty years.

What has Harry Greed ever done “for the cause”?

The sound you sheep are hearing is crickets in your head trying to come up with a response, here’s one, bah, bah, bah.

Not even a huge fan of his, but the facts are what they are, the facts.

Rush is no hero and never will be. He is an overpaid windbag that has insulted soldiers with his 'phoney soldiers' routine. I applaud the Senators for issuing a letter. At least some good comes out of the letter with the money.

Mike Casselberry,Fl   October 19th, 2007 7:41 pm ET

Gee wez! I didn,t know Rush had the Market cornered on Patriotism. I know he has hearing problem, maybe it the side effect from the drug abuse over the years. But I suggest if he going to donate the money that it go to all those homeless vet out their in America that can really use the help instead of the Military Police of tne Marine,s They don,t need the help. You see Rush, how easy it is to miss the mark when your just grandstanding for applause. Get over yourself! Help those VET,s or maybe you consider them phony soldier,s too!

Also The mcl-lef have in addition to the regular program, our Foundation decided to support all American Forces and also Coalition Forces in the invasion of Iraq and taking of Baghdad from 3 March 2003 to 16 July 2003. In the past, the Foundation also included in our program the children who lost a parent from all agencies killed in the murderous attack on the Pentagon. We also decided to go back and give our bonds to children who lost a parent on the USS Cole; the children of the Air Force personnel killed at Khobar Towers; and, with great honor, the twelve children who lost their parent on the space shuttle Columbia disaster.

First these Democratic Senators take Limbaugh's comments completely out of context, and Limbaugh pulls off one of the most brilliant political maneuvers in American History, all to benefit a wonderful cause. Never before has a group of elected officials had so much egg on their faces at once, and it was all supplied by their own ignorance and hypocrisy!

I think it's HILARIOUS that Rush has to pay $2.1 million for dissing American Soldiers. He lied and denied (yes, he did doctor the transcript and you can hear the original if you doubt), then pulled a political-marketing stunt that backfired on him. I'm sure he figured the letter might fetch a couple thousand bucks… but he had NO IDEA someone would actually offer to pay THIS much! Of course, since Rush is on the board of the foundation to receive this donation, he'll no doubt figure some way to weasel out of paying… like maybe get the board to vote him a $2.1mil "bonus" for raising an equal amount of money.

Reid & Co. may not have gotten Rush to admit to and apologize for his disparaging remarks about Amercian Soldiers… but at least they got Rush to show himself for the liar he is, and in the process, helped to raise millions to benefit children of soldiers killed in action (even if Rush, predictably, welshes on his part).

People are stupid. They exhibit so much indignation for anti-military remarks that Rush didn’t make, but are perfectly fine with the General Betrayus ads. Exactly when did consistency die off?

Wayne from Greenville - you are an ignorant man clueless about the world. Unlike you, I get my information from the source instead of jokes like CNN, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NBC and the other 30 liberal news outlets out there. I happened to be listening to the show and what was edited out was the caller rambling on about WMD. What was cut had nothing to do with the disgraceful soldiers who make up lies about our military. Get a f#^k*9g life and do your own research, loser.

Rob, Cincinnati, OH   October 19th, 2007 8:01 pm ET

For those saying that "Rush lied", "Rush doctored the transcripts", etc.. Come on!? You are only wishing. It isn't even in his character to say what the Dems claimed. His history says more than any transcript. And so does the Dems…

James Dallas TX   October 19th, 2007 8:02 pm ET

I love it. All the liberal Democrats who signed that letter just look dumber and dumber. I agree with Rush today on what he made of Ried's speach earlier today, "You win Rush"! I love it! Also hey liberal Dems you don't like Rush Limbaugh then don't listen to Rush Limbaugh. It is not brain surgery.

Thank GOD for RUSH LIMBAUGH!
He's pure Genious!
He is a gift from GOD to this earth, the U.S. and the American people!
98.7 % accuracy rating, based on facts and documentation, on his radio program = Truth! A voice for the true red, white and blue blooded Americans. With out his program, where would truth seekers hear it?
Spineless, fork-ed tongued liberals, the likes of crooked Ted Kennedy, Ried and Polosi, Clintons, Obama, etc., including the liberal owned press (Big Lie propaganda machine) in this country are the cancer eating away at America and our freedoms. What is their accuracy rating? They're pathetic! Some of these cowardly smelly little lying-commie rats, won't even wear a United States of America lapel flag pin! Heeelllooooo!!!
Who really genuinely supports America, patriotism and the troops?
God Bless the troops, President G.W. Bush, and Rush Limbaugh!
From a Rush Babe,( I LOVE Rush because I love truth!)

Clint, Tulsa, OK   October 19th, 2007 8:04 pm ET

I always hear the left-wing media say Rush spreads hate. I listen to his show when I can and have never heard a hateful thing yet. Please, someone show me just one hateful thing he has said. And if you consider Rush chastising soldiers who lie about themselves and our military as hateful - I think I see the problem. I guess lying about yourself and your own country's military isn't hateful, but pointing out those losers who would do such a thing is hateful. Now I see.

sharon snow   October 19th, 2007 8:05 pm ET

wow cnn better late than never. poor old harry, he still can't admit that he took rush's commets out of context. any thing to keep media watch happy. today he tried to turn it around and make the dems look like the good guys, the o
