Watch Rudy Giuliani talk about the possibility of being whacked by the mob.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani said late Thursday he doesn’t know if the mob really wanted to have him killed when he was a U.S. attorney in 1986, but said threats against him were part of the job.

FBI agent William Bolinder testified in the murder trial of a former agent this week about the alleged plot. He testified two of New York’s five mob families favored ordering the hit, but it ended when the heads of three other families opposed it.

“Do I think the mob really tried to whack me? Go ask the mob!”, Giuliani laughed as he was asked about the plot on Capitol Hill, “How do I know if the mob really wanted to whack me.”

Giuliani said he was aware of suspected plots to kill him while he was a U.S. attorney.

“I remember two, three times when the FBI was seriously concerned about what they described as contracts,” he said, “I remember the first one being resolved. This one that just came up, I don’t remember.”

The former New York City mayor said he believed the alleged threats came with the territory as a federal prosecutor. “

There was more than one, but the FBI always did a really good job of getting them resolved, but I always thought it was my obligation to put it out of my mind and just do my job.”

IF it is true, too bad they failed. This sounds like a diversionary tactic to get the real subject material of the process, which what are the qualifications of the people running for president.

This, unfortunately is becoming SOP for most politicians in trouble.

Lie, deny, change the subject, and when all else fails, attack and demean you opponent’s character and motives.

Here we have one ma by two of the above. (Change the subject and may be lie)

I bet Bush put a hit out on him but bungled the job. Because as we all know, it is always Bush's fault.

Angry New Yorker   October 26th, 2007 5:38 pm ET

Giuliani might as well have been in the mafia. If you dont believe it, during mayor of NY a couple of innocent citizens got killed by NYPD. What did that scumbag Giuliani do.... nothing except try to justify NYPD's wrongful actions in slaying innocent citizens. If you elect Giuliani except more of the same, but on a much larger scale....its called WORLD WAR III!!! I'm pretty sure his organized mafia will be proud of that (I am not referring to the Italians)

He is riding the coattails of others on so many of his "accomplishments" that he has saddle-sores. Twenty-three tax cuts is a load of crap, etc.

As others have mentioned the guy was a dictator who did whatever he wanted unchecked

And to your comment about the Woodstock memorial, how about the Bridge to Nowhere? If the GOP was still in power, it would be under construction right now and that costs a LOT more than a million.

Bea, Hoboken, NJ   October 26th, 2007 2:57 pm ET

Very intelligent comment by Lawrence! "Guiliani's family is reported to be mafia"? Comments like that should not be allowed by cnn. An insult to Italians and to people with any sort of intelligence.

Where are from Andre? I guess not from the NY area. Giuliani's daddy spent some time in jail, check out the details for yourself.

Revisionist history by 5 Min Major for Boaeding just proves that only the ignorant and idiots support Rudy.On 9/10 Rudy was considered one of the worst mayors in decades.9/11 he was everybodies hero.Shortly after 9/12 even the NYPD and NYFD hated the rat.

As to polls and the margin of error in Florida,Florida is the very definition of margin for error.

pat huntington ny   October 26th, 2007 2:15 pm ET

To the comment about NY'rs being revisionists...sorry...but we're just trying to remind people outside of the NYC area that things were not as rosy as Rudy makes it to be.

He did not single handedly clean up NY. Bill Clinton's crime bill passed at the beginning of his first term put thousands of extra cops on the "beat". That, coupled with the already crime down turn that was happening at the beginning of Rudy's first term, as well as the economic boom that followed, helped turn NYC into a safer place. Oh, and we can't forget Disney's hand by turning Time Square into Disney Square.

Rudy ruled with an arrogance not seen in recent history. He ignored and did not get along with the City Council. He was indifferent to the racist motivated killings of innocent blacks by some of the cops here. Because he owed a lobbiest a favor, he placed the city's Office of Emergency Management in the Twin Towers, dubbed the only bunker in the sky, despite the 1993 bombing! And, since that bombing, he was already warned about the radio communication problems with the NYPD and FDNY that caused many needless deaths on 9-11. Yet ignore them.

And what you may not know is that on 9-10-01, we were counting down the days to the end of Rudy's last term. We were fed up with him! Big Time! He was a political embarrassment given how he treated the end of his second marriage.

Daniel, NY   October 26th, 2007 12:42 pm ET

In other good news for Giuliani, he does great in Florida's new poll from Quinnipiac with Giuliani in a new-found lead against Clinton.

Brenda, Annapolis MD   October 26th, 2007 12:41 pm ET

Daniel in NY: I checked out the link and–1) There is no information regarding who conducted the poll (how do we know it was conducted by a credible, unbiased source?), 2) It's a blog. Hardly a source for honest information. Not to mention, there is no contact information for the blogger to even ask what their sources are, and 3) There is always a margin of error in credible polls. If this is a legit poll, and the blogger is unbiased, then the margin of error would be available for the reader.

Words to the wise–be careful before you believe everything you read on the internet. Blogs are opinion based anyway–very few are derivative of facts (most skew the facts to fit their opinions). Sorry to burst your bubble. Of course, if you're a Rudy supporter, I probably did you a favor.

Rudy is low-life that he fits in naturally with the GOP and their voters, even if his positions are polar-opposite.

5 Min Major for Boarding   October 26th, 2007 11:49 am ET

Revisionist history. New Yorkers aren't such stupid people that they've forgotten all the good that Guliani accomplished while he was mayor. The city and state will go for the Democratic candidate in the general election- probably Hillary, but this tactic to slander Guliani years later is abominable.

Bill, Streamwood, IL   October 26th, 2007 11:44 am ET

If Rudy was doing anything really effective against the mob, they would have tried to whack him. Since they didn't, he was merely irritating ... like he is now.

This is nothing but cheap publicity for Giuliani.

I still say he looks like a demented Bob Newhart.

You could listen to Tims baseless rhetoric....(sounds like a Hillidiot to me) – or you could read from a time when he wasn't running for President – and won man of the year http://www.time.com/time/poy2001/

Its time to stop the rhetoric – Tim...research Saul Alinsky and see how Hillary (the student) has become the teacher....(well...of Marxist doctrine)...read it...tons of social programs.....and punishing the rich....oh yes...the entitlement society ...read it....

Jeff, New York, NY   October 26th, 2007 10:24 am ET

Rudy lying to everyone again.. of course he knew of the hits.... he paid them off to save his sorry life...and he did it using New York citizen's money... that is right... tax money...i guess i cannot believe ANYONE would trust this guy.. but then again, he is going for the republican vote...

R.L. California   October 26th, 2007 10:21 am ET

Giuliani's father and uncle were mob related loan sharkers. Rudy's father was a felon and served time in Sing-Sing for armed robbery. Rudy's cousing was gunned down by the FBI. Miraculously, none of this showed up in Rudy's FBI background check when he became Assistant Attorney General under Reagan. Rudy kept it all secret with some coverup. How that happened I don't know. There must be Mafia in the FBI as well. The fact that this was covered up and never mentioned by Rudy, who called his father an honest man, makes you realize that Rudy is a fiction. Perhaps the Mob families that wanted to kill Rudy were the opposition families, the ones he prosecuted. The Mob families that stopped the assasination were his own. I don't trust this man.

David, Dallas Tx   October 26th, 2007 10:16 am ET

I remember the first one being resolved.... the FBI always did a really good job of getting them resolved.

How does one go about getting a mob contract "resolved" except by 1) dying, 2) eliminating those offering the contract, or 3) offering a good enough deal to the mob that they'd rather have your deal instead of your head.

We know that 1) and 2) didn't happen. And we know Giuliani didn't ever get any of the mafia heads...

Lastly, Bonanno's book describes these types of interaction between mafia and government, and names names....

Sorry Daniel...but don't get excited. To quote Rudy when the poll two weeks ago was the same but in Hillary's favor, "It's still within the margin of error." So, the poll is meaningless, especially since we don't know the %age of undecided.

And who cares if he's had death threats. How does that make him qualified? All elected officials get death threats.

Tom - Dedham, Mass   October 26th, 2007 9:53 am ET

Um, Tim, Hillary has changed or blurred her positions so many times RECENTLY that nobody knows what she stands for.

Romney changed his stances based on life experience over a matter of YEARS, the Shrill one, changes stances over a matter of VENUES, POLLS or what her handlers tell her.

As for Rudy having a big ego who wants power, that could equate to Hillary as well, but as big as his ego is, I don't think he throws himself b-day parties.

pat huntington ny   October 26th, 2007 9:49 am ET

Whatever.

Aaron, Lynnwood, WA   October 26th, 2007 9:48 am ET

Pickles, Monaca, PA   October 26th, 2007 9:00 am ET

Does Rudy think that dodging a Mafia "whacking" makes him look like a tough guy? One way or another, he's still a first-class JERK!

James, Phoenix AZ   October 26th, 2007 8:22 am ET

Rudy Guiliani is the greatest living American in 50 years.

Get over it folks, he'll be the next President whether you like it or not. My websites told me so!!!

Hillary stinks!! Swift Boat Vets for Truth!!!

Antonio, Tempe AZ   October 26th, 2007 5:57 am ET

let's hope we can have a classier forum than the last giuliani thread.

as much fun as it to make personal smears on giuliani (he had like a million divorces and his family is mafia cyborgs from the future or whatever) try to stick to the issues.

it will make you seem more intelligent and it will give me hope for the future of our country. everyone wins.

Sam, IA   October 26th, 2007 4:51 am ET

Typical Gulliani. Others do the hard work and Rudy jumps in front of the camera to skim off any glimmer of glory.
Truth is that many federal prosecutors where targeted by the mob. Another truth is that the mob today is basically legitimized in the business world. Reagans handlers made it more profitable to bust kneecaps economically than with a wiseguy.

Tim, El Cerrito, CA   October 26th, 2007 12:28 am ET

Guiliani is an idiot. His own constituants don't like him that much. Compare the support Clinton gets from New Yorkers to that of Guiliani. That speaks volumes. I could care less that he's been married 3 times but I do care that he's pretty much just like Romney in that he seems to be a different person than he was when he was mayor. So Who know's how this guy really feels. He just seems to be a big ego guy who want power and to continue all the failed policies of GW Bush.

Davis Minnesota   October 25th, 2007 10:59 pm ET
