Clinton ad targets seniors

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (CNN) – Sen. Hillary Clinton launched a new television ad in Iowa and New Hampshire Monday designed to reach senior citizens.

In the 30-second spot, Clinton highlights her role as an advocate for the elderly by focusing on key issues of the demographic: Social Security and long term health insurance. Clinton asserts she is the candidate that has been with seniors “all along.”

The Republican National Committee immediately responded with a sharp critique of the New York Democrat’s ad.

“How can Senator Clinton claim to be there for you, when she won’t even give a straight answer on how to save Social Security? The one thing we know about Hillary Clinton and Social Security is that she was definitely there in the White House when Bill raised taxes on benefits and she was definitely there in the Senate when she refused to repeal it.”

Diane, NYC NY

Diane do you really think hillary, as a senator, can do anything about health care reform in NY when health insurance lobbyists are filling this administration's pockets with cash?? your argument has no merit because you have to place the blame where it deserves to be with the bush administration not a new york senator!!

Diane, NYC NY   October 30th, 2007 12:56 pm ET

What exactly has Mrs Clinton done during her time in Senate for the seniors of NY?

My parents are both seniors there, and they get more and more uncertain about their future – how will they pay their prescriptions, take care of the house if one or the other dies, get around as their eyesight/driving becomes worse. They haven't seen hide nor hair of any support from Mrs Clinton in upstate NY.

Please, please, look at her record and not at the fact that she's (in)famous or a woman!!

PAUL PROVIDENCE RI   October 30th, 2007 12:04 pm ET

She has been in the senate for how long now and with her run for president, she is now going to do something for social security! Please tell me how the hell can anyone really believe in this person. The word believe had a bigger word in it: LIE

Pat, Chicago Heights, IL   October 30th, 2007 12:01 pm ET

We need to respect our seniors and give them all the care and monthly money we can. Many of them served in WWII and VietNam. Congress need to look at their pork barrel spending and get RID OF IT, redirecting that money to our senior citizens.

How to save Social Security, Hillary?

Admit that it's a legalized Ponzi Scheme and immediately stop taking working people's money.

therealist   October 30th, 2007 11:41 am ET

The only way to save Social Security is to cut benefits and nobody is going to tell seniors that truth and get elected.

doremus jessup   October 30th, 2007 9:49 am ET

The way to save social security is to first secure the competency of the US government by electing a president that considers the people before politics and corporate greed. By a process of elimination, most or all of the Republican candidates do not qualify by virtue of their obligations to highly influential corporate interests. The Repulicans and religous right are wrapping our constitution so tightly in the flag that it suffocates while cross-bearing hate mongers advocate the ethnic and social cleansing of America in the name of an imaginary power, but mostly from fear of difference. We need real, rational, considerate, logical and thoughtful leadership. Hillary is the current best choice. To believe otherwise is to admit ignorance.

MostAmericanVoters   October 30th, 2007 9:37 am ET

It's going to take a lot more than a 30 second ad for Hillary to convince me of anything..

Tell us old folks specifically whether you will support a means-tested SS reform to save the old-age fund from insolvency and plundering by those like you and Bill who do not need it? Yes or no, please, then explain if you can.

Tim, El Cerrito Ca   October 29th, 2007 10:39 pm ET

The RNC continues to want to run campaigns bases on lies, distortions, and character assassinations. They don't want to talk about the issues because they are afraid of the truth. Hillary rules!

Olson Johnson; Rock Ridge   October 29th, 2007 9:44 pm ET

It's hard to criticize Mrs. Clinton on Social Security because we have no idea what she thinks about how to solve the problem.

Daniel, NY   October 29th, 2007 9:20 pm ET

Edwards's very harsh attacks on Hillary today are an attempt to soften her up, which is exactly what Edwards and Obama have to do. But Obama might be the on who benefits most from the attacks, read why here!

Jesse, Burnsville, MN   October 29th, 2007 9:10 pm ET

Hillary's campaign is imploding slowly but surely. Obama and Edwards should strike a deal that whoever does better in Iowa gets to keep going and the other would become the automatic VP. What a great ticket that would be. Obama/Edwards or Edwards/Obama. Either way, it is better than Clinton/????.

Beth, NY   October 29th, 2007 8:54 pm ET

Is anyone else noticing the fact that Hillary Clinton never gives a straight answer to a question?

This commercial does not tell us what her plan is for assuring the solvency of Social Security.

Can she just answer a question for once?

J. McKinney SW MO   October 29th, 2007 8:48 pm ET

There is no way Hillary could give an answer that would satisfy those of you who are against her. She will be able to straighten out a lot of the mess we are in, but we sure didn't get there overnight, and even she and Bill, with all their good intentions, won't be able to straighten it out overnight, but they will be doing their best, I am sure. Hillary all the way! Go, Girl! We are with you.

John, NC   October 29th, 2007 8:32 pm ET

Bill Clinton raised taxes on my hard earned Social Security.

jw, canadian,ok   October 29th, 2007 8:02 pm ET

I don't know how Hillary would solve Social Security, but I tell the 3 TRILLION dollars we've spent in IRAQ, probably would help.

Bill, Streamwood, IL   October 29th, 2007 8:02 pm ET

This is a typical RNC response, denegrate whatever the Democrats say, but offer no succor alternative.

What does the GOP offer senior citizens? Nothing!

Ivan, Chicago, Illinois   October 29th, 2007 7:54 pm ET

I would trust Hillary Clinton and any democrat to safe guard our Social Security, improve our health care system, before any republican. As for Giuliani touting the success rate of our system over England's, number one he has insurance, what is the survival rate if you're one of those that don't health insurance. Number two I don't believe him, he's playing with the numbers.

"she was definitely there in the White House when Bill raised taxes on benefits and she was definitely there in the Senate when she refused to repeal it.”

Oh...., there's that experience Hillary keeps crowing about..

Joe, DC   October 29th, 2007 7:13 pm ET

Looks like the Republicans aren't quite so anxious to have Sen. Clinton be the Democratic Party nominee anymore!

Tim, El Cerrito Ca   October 29th, 2007 7:10 pm ET

Oh, and you know what else? You can't even send the RNC an email. The RNC can't deal with the truth. They are afraid of the truth if you ask me. Otherwise they would try and win elections by arguing issues on their merits instead of by character assasinations, distortions, and dirty tricks (like they are trying again in California by rigging the electoral collage). Even Arnold (one of their own) said it was a loser mentality.

Tim, El Cerrito CA   October 29th, 2007 7:03 pm ET

The Republican National Committee is a joke. Do they think anyone believes anthing they say? The Repubs just don't get it. They are the ones with zero credibility. Zero a big zero. Hillary will make a great President! And she will fight for more than just the few like the RNC and all their like! Long live Hillary!

monica, rochester new york   October 29th, 2007 6:59 pm ET

Hillary has said publicly during one of the debates that she "doesn't think a presidential candidate should tell the American public everything they really think." So why is the GOP surprised that she won't answer tough questions about important issues, apparently the American people don't need to know. We're just the "little people" as Leona Helmsely used to say.

Bob, Seattle, WA   October 29th, 2007 6:45 pm ET

Hillary is the 'all' to all people. She was there for the babies too. $5,000 worth per child. She was there for the 'poor'. She was their for the 'sick'. She was there for the under served in New Orleans. She was there for the Iragi civilians that America violated. Why wouldn't she be there for the seniors. Trouble is, as in the Wizard of Oz, she is being 'found out' and the whole 'show' is being exposed. '08 will be the year she wish never happened. '08 will be the year of her reward.

BCNU purple state, usa   October 29th, 2007 6:43 pm ET

Clinton asserts she is the candidate that has been with seniors “all along.”

She's been with every demographic "all along", just ask her.

The headline should read....

Clinton targets seniors' wallets

Ann ME   October 29th, 2007 6:40 pm ET

Hillary Clinton's claims to Seniors and Social Security is ludicrous. Her appreciation of both is the same as her husband's. Bill Clinton raided and stole monies from the Social Security Department to "fake" balancing the budget. Hillary intends to do the same thing.

Uriew, CA   October 29th, 2007 6:23 pm ET

Hillary has perfected the art of being a follower. As soon as Obama posts a TV ad on social security she does the same, as soon as Obama puts a TV ad in South Carolina she follows. Maybe she is struggling for Vice president spot, the perfect follower!

Ron, TX   October 29th, 2007 6:19 pm ET

==Clinton says that Social Security is in jeopardy. But pressed in a recent debate on how to shore up the system's shaky finances, Clinton refused to offer any remedy. "I don't think I should be negotiating about what I would do as president," she said. "You know, I want to see what other people come to the table with."=== LA Times Article, early October 2007

America DESERVES answers Hillary. America NEEDS to know where you stand! We don't need a President who's good at dodgeball. We need a President who's good at -leading-.
