I don't understand why someone hasn't brought this up before. It is like the children's story, The Emperor's New Clothes". I think that Pres. Bush had some problem with his cognitive abilities. I am not a clinical psychologist, so wouldn't know where to start with testing, but certainly a serious examinatino of his mental abilities is warranted. Just listen to his speech. Slurring, mix-ups, etc.

I completely agree, and it scares me. He's cheerfully sending our country into a massive nuclear war, and doesn't seem to be looking for any alternatives. At the very least he should finish the war he started before sending troops into a new war. Considering that the information for both wars were made up, I think it's time to take a serious look at the government we have in place, and the president we "elected".

It might not happen now but probably in the next 2-3 years when Bush is no longer the President. I want to see if this man ever becomes the President (I'm sure he'll never ever become the President of the US), what he will do when Iran attacks Israel and US with nuclear missiles. This issue has personally concerned for me quite some time – especially since the Bush administration continue to behave under the delusion that they are above the laws of this nation.
Facts are facts; This administration has focused on feeding the greed, not the need of our nation. Bush and his cronies have blatantly been allowed to ignore the laws, policies and standards set by our government. They have misrepresented facts, used our nation’s resources to privately profit from a bogus war, bandied our children’s right to healthcare, sold off large amounts of our natural resources to corporations who are major contributors to global warming…. They have recklessly and irresponsibly buried the United States in so much debt, international distrust and ridicule, that is almost impossible to see light at the end of the tunnel.

Based on those facts, I think the subject is a no-brainer. Each and EVERY person holding a political office, or running for political office, should be required to annually undergo thorough psychological and psychiatric examinations as well as drug testing.

I mean, even folks applying for the limited jobs currently available in this country; like work as cashiers in convenience stores, house cleaning or similar positions, are required to complete drug and criminal background testing before hire.

Why shouldn't individuals running for political office have to comply with the same, if not even more stringent, medical testing? Don’t they have healthcare?

I am not an expert in mental health disorders. But, it seems to me when I see and hear his speaches, that President Bush seems anxious and a bit hesitant at finding the right words to express himself. Has anyone in the Congress ever heard of the Twenty-fifth Amendment, Section Four? We can't expect principal officers in the Executive Branch to trigger this amendment.

We hear the results of the President's yearly physical; why not a mental exam. I know why. Mental illness has such a stigma that it is never discussed, but there a possibility, without treatment, for it to have tragic results. Functions in our brain are not a result of choice but of biological makeup and environmental conditions that exacerbate it. If soldiers can suffer this illness, so can the Commander-in-Chief.

To put my two cents in, A good portion of the nation is not happy with the way Bush is going about things in office. He is suppose to be our representative of this nation and he is doing a horrible job. He is the one who represents the people, he is not listening to our state, county and city representatives when they go to push for something in Congress. He vetos it right away as if they pulled it out of their behinds and thinks that the nation does not feel that way. Well here is news to you, Mr. President, Congress is relaying the message that the people of the United States are telling them to relay. You are doing the same thing with making threats against other nations as all of those communist and dictatorships did. I wish I would have never voted for you in the first election. Thank goodness my mind was on track for the second. I still believe impeachment of this President and the Vice President is the way to go. As a daugher of a parent who has mental illness, I am certainly not bigoted in my views that mentally ill individuals should not hold public office. However, I do think the President of the United States – the person who represents the 300+ million individuals of this country – should have the clarity, capable judgment, and common sense do his/her job. Unfortunately, as we all know, President Bush lacks all of these virtues.

I think the main reason why people do not like Kucinich is because he is very broadminded, and perhaps individuals are afraid to open up to his considerations for change. He uses such subject matter as the Constitution and International Law to make his points, and for some reason the same people who say they are for America fear those same talking points.

Kucinich's own mental health on last night's MSNBC debate when a commentator asked the Rep. about a comment in Shirely MacLaine's book that he had seen a UFO, and had found it a life-altering experience (or something to that effect). This was after he called for Bush's impeachment, after citing actual impeachable offenses committed by the president. BYW, no one picked up on that - neither commentators or other candidates.

As I understand it, the head of the American Psychiatric Association or some similar organization has made the same observation, publically diagnosing Bush as pathological. Boy! There has always been something a bit odd about the way the current President Bush speaks ... something halting; and, especially late in the day or in the evening, he is comically prone to malapropisms. It is well-known and undenied that he had a serious alcohol problem at one time; and he has never answered questions about drug use occurring more than five years before he became Governor of Texas. However, Kucinich's actions about a month or so crossed the line when he went on Syrian television and spoke poorly of President Bush, Republicans in general, our brave troops, and the mission in Iraq.

It is a known fact that Syria supports terrorism and is an enemy of our great nation. Kucinich has given aid and comfort to the enemy; such actions are unforgivable.

In fact, Kucinich admitted on Syrian television that he intentionally did NOT go to Iraq, and thus snubbed our brave troops.

The Founding Fathers are rolling over in their graves. They would have hanged this creep, Dennis Kucinich.

I could NOT care less what his views are; he is guilty of treason as far as I am concerned.

Dennis Kucinich is the only candidate and person brave enough to tell the truth. His judgement is right on. Bush is nuts. He clearly suffers from a God complex. Would we follow David Koresh, or Charles Manson in to war? Thanks again Dennis for your bravery.

Kudos to the Dem Candidate. Someone needs to express what millions of Americans who love their county have been asking for a number of years. Dennis Kucinich is absolutely right. It doesn't take a medical degree or a specialty in psychology to recognize that Bush's actions throughout his presidency have been self-serving (beyond even the normal politician's egomania) with a lack of recognition of the implications of his actions. He has started two wars, created more poverty, imprisoned people without charge and in many cases without just cause, and the list goes on. I have often wandered if Mr. Kucinich has some kind of mental disorder. For some reason he keeps running for President and if he only knew how the people make jokes about him he would not be saying such things as this. Mr. Kucinich isn't the first person to question the mental stability of the President. The President appears to be a man who places no constraints on himself, who is indifferent to how his behaviors and statements affect others. That's putting things mildly. To place such a man in the President's position has potentially disasterous consequences. Kucinich lacks understanding. I don't think he understands how serious Iran is about nuking Israel when it acquires a nuke weapon. When that happens, the other islamic countries will join in the fight to destroy something their koran teaches them to hate. America, being Israel's only ally in the world, will come to its defense. 1. Israel have their own nukes, including nuclear-armed submarines that would allow them to nuke Iran in retaliation for any attack.

2. Most of the Sunni Arab Muslim world is aligned against Shi'ite Persian Muslim Iran. Combine this with the certainty that fallout from any bombs dropped on Israel would kill people in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Egypt, and the chances drop considerably for the rest of the Muslim world jumping in on the side of Iran.

3. The Koran doesn't teach Muslims to hate Israel – it teaches them to respect Jews and Christians as fellow-traveling believers in a single God. It's the political leaders in the Muslim world (including Osama bin Laden) who teach their countrymen to hate Israel.

4. Israel has plenty of allies in the rest of the world (and could expect to have plenty more if they were attacked with nuclear weapons). We're just the only ones who refuse to officially rebuke the Israelis when they do stupid things like create illegal settlements in occupied land.

5. A "threat of violence" won't start WWIII, granted. But Bush and Cheney are behaving exactly the same way they did in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, making it pretty clear that a "threat of violence" from them is likely to be followed up with actual violence.

Let's look at it another way: Why are we threatening violence against Iran, instead of pursuing the same sort of diplomatic actions that have recently brought success in talks with North Korea? It can easily be argued that Kim Jong-Il is much less sane than Ahmadinejad, yet we're working with Kim. What's the major difference? The neo-con delusion that we need to keep trying to knock over "democracy dominoes" in the Middle East, since Iraq clearly didn't start the chain-reaction of "freedom" it was supposed to initiate.

Casting any vote that goes along with the current White House "all stick, no carrot" approach to Iran is a vote that gives Cheney and Bush a fig-leaf to cover their naked ambition for starting a war. Kucinich might be a bit nuts, but he's certainly right about Hillary Clinton's 2nd idiotic, Bush-war-enabling vote.

Does he not understand that Bush said what he said precisely BECAUSE he knows his works have real impact? President Bush said: “I've told people that, if you're interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon." Of course he expected these words to have an impact. He expected both the U.S. and her true allies to do what is necessary, short of war, to prevent WWIII (which is almost inevitable if Iran gets nuclear weapons).

(2) Kucinich said: “I seriously believe we have to start asking questions about his mental health." Whose mental health is truly in question here? Sure, the President has made mistakes, some very serious (e.g., Iraq, the deficit and debt, appointments of fools and knaves), but these were not a matter of mental health, just poor judgment.

(3) Kucinich has serious problems of his own, obviously, and for him to even have a national soapbox shows how far this nation has fallen.

What the Republican National Committee "spokesman"

Kucinich is a the one with the mental issues, not Bush. If Iran were to have nukes does Kucinich think for a moment that it would be a good thing for this planet? I have honestly believed for years , there is something wrong with Bush. When Bush questioned Senator Kerry's actions in Vietnam , I wondered how he could do that to a real life hero when no-one can still say where he was.

Bush's condition may not be raised to such a level that could be clinically defined as psychologically unfit but certain actions raise questions and the question will be raised by historians. His lifelong and odd reliance on the dark Karl Rove who would trash heroic figures like McCain with rumors of black love child in S. Carolina are one example.

A more curious example is his decision to pick Rumsfield for Secretary of Defense. Cheney presents him a list of 12 names in a country of 300,000,000 and Bush settles on the one guy his father hates and distrusts the most (for trying to sabotage his presidential ambitions by arranging for Ford to appoint him head of the CIA – Rumsfield had presidential ambitions of his own at the time).

Now before you republicans react hysterically to this think would you appoint someone to your cabinet who your father absolutely loathed. Is that a sign of a normal healthy mind. Did he really think the nation had no other candidate that he had to appoint the one guy that would make his father's blood boil.

It may not mean he's unbalanced but it certainly is not normal.

I share Congressman Dennis Kucinich's concern about this president's mental abilities because, as is evident, if there is not something wrong with this president, then there is something wrong with US. As to the appropriateness or inappropriateness of Kucinich's public comments, in a simpler time in our nation's history these comments might have been over-the-top. With Bush at the helm, they are not. Unfortunately.

I have been thinking abount Bush's mental health for a long, long time. He has a history of alcoholistm, and even if he does not drink anymore his brain might have suffered some damage as is usually the case with people with this desease. We wouldn't be the first empire governed by mentally ill leaders. Remember Rome and the lead in their water pipes? Thank you, Mr. Kucinich for bringing this issue to light. The mental health of our leaders is as important, if not more, than their physical health.

A perfectly legitimate question to ask. I wondered the same thing when I read of his comment. Wait a second, Iran does not have a Navy or and Air Force to speak of, has a modest sized army, and certainly to anyone with half a brain, seems completely incapable of beginning a world war. The only logical conclusions are:

1. Bush was simply lying.
2. Bush is delusional and needs to have his head examined.
3. What Bush really meant to say is, that he - as Commander in Chief - will start WWIII if Iran gets a nuclear weapon.

Many of us in the mental health field have for a long time considered Bush as suffering from the symptoms known as "Dry Drunk Symdrome." So I think his mental health is more than appropriate to call into question. The President gets regular physicals; I think it would be most appropriate for our President to submit to a mental health examination, given the powers he holds, and how badly he has used those powers (and when asked if he has made any mistakes in his administration, he can't think of a single instance [talk about arrogance and feelings of grandiosity, classic symptoms of a dry drunk]. Of course, that will never happen in a million years, just as Bush will never admit to any errors. That's just the way the guy is built/made.

In all honesty should Kucinich may not be the best person to make these statements but at least he has brought the point to the table. I have doubted Bush's mental health too, having decided not to attribute his actions and statements solely to incompetence or stupidity. If we had been correct in starting this war, which we have difficulty finishing, we would have had U.N. backing before entering the war. To criticize this man for starting a war under false pretense is an obligation we have, to not criticize him is to be responsible for the loss of life over there. Before Bush was even elected he made joking comments about Karla Faye Tucker which demonstrated his lack of response for human life. This is not anything new, but just now are many begining to realize things just are not adding up. Hopefully America will learn from this experience and consider this sort of trait for future candidates.

I have always thought Bush has fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), which is caused by the pregnant mother being a heavy drinker, especially in the first three months. A key symptom is very close-set eyes. We should have been questioning Bush's mental health years ago. Now is a little late! (but better late than never!)

There is a very good read titled 'George Bush Jr. on the couch". Written by competent Physcologist. His personility resembles that of a frustrated social climber.Overly aware that he maybe a failier. Selfconscience then becomes his own enemy.

Seeing oneself as all-knowing is hardly a marker for healthy sanity.

Avoiding responsibility for one's choices and actions is a hallmark of mental illness....his list of scapegoats is endless. Bush demonstrates the full spectrum of symptoms of a "dry drunk" getting his fix elsewhere, perhaps a power high from being "The Decider". Had 4,000 US troops and 1 MILLION Iraqi civilians not died as a result of his emotional and intellectual failings and choices, I'd wish him some sustained counselling. So many American presidents have suffered mental illness and just two come to mind at the moment. Lincoln was Bipolar and Reagan's alziemers had set in well before his term was over. There are others less publicized but to think that Bush would be one of them would be no alarming surprise to me.

I believe President Bush's mental state is a valid question. President Bush seems to have no interest in representing the majority, only his own views-that's not a President. He listens to no one and seems only interested in War and bombs. I think he is mentally ill and has a need for power that puts this country at risk as well as our service people. I've been thinking that Bush had mental health issues for years. I myself am bipolar and I know the symptoms intimately. They include a lack of sleep, (Bush has been known for insomnia), also they include grandiose behavior and a refusal to deal with reality. (nuff said). People with bipolar, or manic/depressive syndrome, cycle back and forth from being lethargic and depressed to grandiose and manic. I've read several interviews with people who've described Bush as sometimes in the groove, totally confident and in charge, and other times listess and not interested in anything much.

If he was on lithium, a popular bipolar medicine, this would also explain his slurred and irregular speech, another popular side effect.

I recently heard on Air America that he ranted to a group of friends from TX for thirty minutes about how he was being persecuted and how he felt God gave him the right to keep us in Iraq. People with bipolar disorder often have delusions of God talking to them, or they feel that they have power from God.

Sometimes you can even sense where his mental health is at in his speeches. Sometimes they're overly arrogant and grand, other times it looks like the lights are on but nobody is home.

Bipolar disorder can be triggered by heavy drug use, especially stimulants like speed or cocaine or exstacy. It's well known Bush did cocaine. That could have conditioned his brain to have the disease.

I'm serious. I know this disease intimately and I've suspected Bush had it for years. It's good to see I'm not alone.

I have internally questioned his mental health ever since he put other people's children up for grabs with his famous:"bring'em on".

It is really interesting that Kucinch questions Bush's mental health, when he is the one who one to be President of this country when he does not have any intelectual capacity to do that, he is just a Congressman who cannot do anything but just complain and he was the one who used the last run for presidento to get a wife, that say everything

I guess Kucinich needs have to have his head examined, and it is long over due. Why is no one questioning the mental health of people like Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid given the congress's dismal performance ex. trying to put a stop to talk radio becauase the dems cannot have a successful talk show.

I agree that the issue is a legitimate one. Read "Bush on the Couch". Watch Bush read a book upside down looking like a deer in the headlights on 9-11-2001. But there has to be - with all the stress and corruption about - an understandable toll taken on every President's mental health. The bigger question, I think, is our own mental health in so chronically falling for, and supporting, the lies and misstakes of our top government officials Republicans and Democrats alike.

I am amazed that no one in the U.S. has seriously asked this question before!! A stable person would not have made many of the decisions that G.W. Bush has made in his time in office. His attitude of 'do as I say' or I'll kill you has made the world a very unsafe place for all who share this planet with him!!

Coming from a Socialist midget really does not hold much water. Kucinich would have a tea party with Al Queda if he was allowed to. There have only been 40 federal prosectuions for treason in our history, with far fewer resulting in prison terms. That's through the Whiskey Rebellion, Civil War, McCarthy hearings (whose tactics I'm guessing you would have whole-heartedly supported back then), etc. The next time you want to shoot your mouth off against people whose political viewpoints differ from your own, try not to show your complete disregard for the facts. Not to mention the facts that if polled, far more people would support a few administration members being tried long before Kuchinich.

Also, I think that there is a very viable question about Reagan's health in the last years of office. If you're claiming that Democrats were questioning his mental health near the end of his term, don't you find it awfully conincidental that he was diagnosed a few years later with a mental health disorder?

Oh, and real mature on the midget comment. I figured with someone like Kuchinich, you Repubs wouldn't have to stoop so low and could stick to his platforms, but I guess that's a problem when the depth of your knowledge about him is that he's a "socialist," but don't really know why.

We have all questioned his mental state or lack of it since he first ran for office. He IS mentally ill. Or maybe he fried his brains on drugs and alcohol but regardless he had no business being president. He has destroyed this great country.

He is classic psychopath with all the signs, charming exterior, but bent on violent destruction at all costs. He has destroyed Iraq and our own country. He needs to be stopped or we are all in trouble.

This statement or question says so much more about Kucinich's manipulative stance as an "opportunistic infection" than it does about any negative criticism of President Bush.

He needs to offer "something as a cure"...duh!!!

Frankly speaking, there's a contigency out here that has questioned GWB's – et al – mental health long before and since the 2000 and 2004 elections. I think it is pretty sad that it took this long to make the news.

Newsflash! I believe the alternative media has thoroughly covered this over the years, but of course the mainstream media has been so busy putting their collective, "hard news" noses up this adminstration's a**es, they hardly noticed the stench of brain rot from the other end!

Couldnt say it better myself. Bush is a mental case you can't argue that.

If only the mainstream media would pay more attention to Kucinich [such as when he won the LOGO debate in Los Angeles by LOGO's opinion poll post-debate] on a daily basis and listen to his actual platform instead of publishing one comment they consider "sensationalistic" and focusing on Hillary Clinton's "imminent" win the rest of the time.

Perhaps "mental illness" is the wrong phrasing and there could be issues here with being insensitive to mental illness. Kucinich is, however, the only Democratic presidential candidate who voted against the war consistently; the only candidate with a not-for-profit, single-payer universal health care system; the only candidate who is truly pro-workers' rights and wants fair trade; the only candidate who doesn't display rampant homophobia and who believes in marriage equality; et cetera. I know who I will be casting my vote for in the primary – the only person who really wants to help the working class and who has principles untainted by corporate corruption. He doesn't even accept corporate donations to his campaign.

Also, in reference to Iran wanting to nuke Israel because that's what the "Koran teaches", that's a bit reductive. How about the fact that the creation of Israel meant the mass displacement of people who were already living on that land? I don't want to "nuke" anyone, but Americans really need to realize that Israel isn't an angel and Palestine isn't a demon and that the Israeli government / army is an occupying force on other people's land.

I've been wondering about his mental health (his Napolean complex) ever since I heard about his White House guffaw in front of reports where he pumped his fist in the air and said "feels good" when the bombs first started falling in Iraq and then saw him land on an aircraft carrier and declare "Mission Accomplished". There's something to be said for someone who can never admit they've made mistakes and continues to lie to your face...I believe it's called a "sociopath".

I have often questioned Bush's irreverent attitude and complete disregard for the effects his comments have on the rest of the world. He is out of touch with the American people and reality.

President Reagan was not a gifted intellect, though he seemed to be a nice guy. From the beginning, he did not understand the policies that his advisors, who really ran his administration, were or what they were accomplishing. After the assassination attempt, his powers visibly flagged. He fell asleep while speaking to the Pope. He thought he had been part of the invasion of France when the truth was that he was in a movie about it. He was completely flim-flammed by the bogus scientists who convinced him to spend many billions on that foolish project. He sat in his office and wrote charming letters to fourth graders while the men around him ran the country and Nancy consulted astrologers.

Since the Reagan years, Conservatives have imagined a Reagan that never lived. Reagan's only significant accomplishment was to triple the national debt in only 8 years. Of course, that record has now been surpassed by the Conservatives of the current administration.
