Duke James in Griffin GA,

WOW man! I don't want your heart to explode! Slow down and take a deep breath. I never said we are always right! I said the government is to protect its people! Your rambling crossed my eyes! It made no sense! Who is trying to kill the leader of the catholic faith and how is that protecting me? I made a simple statement and your made a rambling response and resort to name calling. You are an angry, angry man! Slow down and lets have a civil discussion! We may even learn sometime from each other!

Sure Craig, I bet Steve meant to finish his post with "...but I hope that never happens."

It's clear that good things in Iraq would be a big disappointment for those hoping that it's failure will lead to Republicans being removed from power and sent to their special corner in Hell.

Steve, Swansboro NC:

Your hopes for the future are exactly why Republicans fear your party. You hope for the worst for the world and our country simply to discredit Bush. CNN will help you by contining to report bad news and ignore good news.

Jay, if I were to apply the same logic to your post as you apply to Steve's post I would accuse you of wanting Steve to want bad things for the world for the purpose of discrediting/demonising those who disagree with Bush. Do you think that is a fair analysis of your post? You are not afraid of the left, you are afraid of the construct of the left that exists only in your own mind. Do you understand how someone might be concerned about the judgments of sombody like you who can not tell the difference between reality and his own imaginings?

Isn't it just an amazing coincidence that a few years after writing a position paper concerning their desire to see American military power expanded into the Middle East as part of Americas' role as the last super power and also an illustrative warning to future enemies, (i.e. China) that an event like 9/11 happened that opened the door for the execution of their theories? I'm talking about the Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz paper written when they formed the PNAC. Do a little studying on this and then let me know if you believe in coincidence. By the way, I don't. Which leads me to believe there is a special corner of Hell waiting for the architects of this Iraq war. For you supporters of these people you are probably ok on the Hell thing because of your ignorance.

I'm sorry that you believe that democracy is impossible in Iraq and that America should just give up and go home. It's odd then that so many Iraqis voted during their last election despite the threat of violence.

Mark, you are right on all your points of our history, but you have missed the most important thing. The Americans made America on their own with no help from any foreign invaders; the French who helped, the German mercenaries all had the grace to return home or marry into the local population and became Americans. We need to take the lesson we taught the world and go home, preferably with our toys (when Democrats want to give time to leave Iraq, it is time to gather up the toys of war and safely pack the traveling containers that we are thinking of). Democracy can only be hatched by the folks who will live with it, it is by its nature a grass roots affair not a top down thing. No matter how much the neocons like the all powerful executive from which the crumbs will flow to the people, that is a monarchy not a democracy.

Musharraf's loss of control in Pakistan will allow a complete takeover by the Taliban in Afganistan. The Turk's invasion of northern Iraq and the response of Iraq and Iran will lead to complete chaos. Bush's war will be revealed and a complete and utter failure. Just as Katrina showed the world what Bush is, what happens in the next week will show even the republicans that the U.S. has made a very big mistake.

What reason could the president and Mukasey have to avoid saying that waterboarding is torture other than the practice of waterboarding is currently being used. If waterboarding is not being used, then there is no downside to calling it what it is--torture. The president is between a rock and a hard place on this issue. If the president says that waterboarding is torture he would be defining himself as a war criminal. If he says that waterboarding is not torture, the world will look at him mouths agape in utter disbelief that he has truly lost whatever sense of reality or humanity that was ever in him.

Eric, from THE Republic of Texas

yea thats a great argument, lets use something that happened 60 years ago with just ONE of the people who voted against waterboarding as a way to null and void the subject of torturing anyone we want in horrible ways. i wish some of these AMERICAN TOUGHGUYS went through 1 day of what these powerless people are going through in the middle east. its easy to put an american flag on our pick up truck when we are IN AMERICA....lets see you try that in the middle east toughguys i bet you that the last people that would do that are these people voting for a tougher government. becausse when you beg for protection all it shows is you have the inability to stand on your own two......

Christian, Selden, NY:

I took your advice and looked it up. Brian Ross reported that Khalid Shiekh Mohammed lasted two and a half minutes of being waterboarded before giving up information that foiled more than a dozen plots including an airline attack on the Library Tower in Los Angeles. I'm sorry it had to be done, but if it is true I'm glad those people are alive today.

Your concern that an innocent person would suffer this treatment is valid. I hope it never happens.

The humiliation that occurred at Abu Ghraib was a terrible incident but it is unfair to paint all of our soldiers in that light. Our soldiers are people too, they love their children, families and do good deeds. I'm not surprised you think how you do because stories like Abu Ghraib are publicized endlessly, while more positive stories such as "Iraqi soldiers donate $1,000 for wildfire aid" are forgotten. We do not thank our soldiers enough.

For the sitting President to say that Americans should pay more attention to the warnings of Osama bin Laden is truly stunning hypocrisy. All through 90s bin Laden boasted of a plan to bog America down in bloody occupations at various places in the Middle East.

I don't fault the administration for invading Afghanistan as that regime was a factual menace (as opposed to a menace only in fiction, as Saddam Hussein was.) If this President actually understood the terrorists' agenda, then he would have foreseen the conversion of Iraq from an impotent secular fascism to a hotbed of religious terrorism driven by overpowering anti-American sentiments.

There are two clear lessons that some people seem to have failed to learn in the past six years. One is that killing large numbers of foreign civilians makes new enemies for your organization regardless of whether that organization is a military superpower or a covert criminal network. The other is that George W. Bush couldn't keep his eye on the proverbial ball if the man had horse blinders surgically implanted. Terrorism is a legitimate and serious concern, having ended the lives of perhaps 3% as many Americans as automobiles have in this century. However, if we are seriously concerned about reducing the extent of terrorist threats in this world, then we should also be seriously concerned about removing from power the one American President who has done far more than any other to strengthen and broaden the extent of these threats.

He should get together with Guiliani and their deck of 911 cards would be complete.

Lets not forget what Bush did 4 years ago:

"Yes, we all want to protect America from terrorism and other threats, but bombing and invading countries in a quest to control their oil is not exactly the best route to take."

Dude, if this were really "all about oil" as the tinfoil hat contingent is adamant at stating, we would have simply invaded Canada and Mexico. We get five times more oil from these two neighbors than we do from Iraq.

Plus, it would be a hell of a lot cheaper and easier to invade Canada and Mexico. I mean, we just follow the interstate highway systems north or south and neither of these nations would put up much of a fight.

Hell, most of Mexico wants to come here anyway and most Canadians are either too cold or too stoned to care either way.

So please, can it with the "no blood for oil" mantra. At least get some sort of dogma that attempts to make sense.

I heard today that Teddy Kennedy has publicly stated he will not support the confirmation of Mukasey as Attorney General, due to the candidate's refusal to label the interrogation technique of waterboarding as "torture."

Waterboarding is the controvercial terrorist interrogation technique in which accused terrorists are tricked into believing they are drowning... in other words, to scare them so bad they spill their guts on the intel they know.

Now, let's just think about the irony in the two paragraphs above...

It's too bad that Kennedy's concern for the simulated drowning of terrorists didn't extend to innocent 29-year-old single female secretaries who ride in his Oldsmobile.

Bush's strong words againts the ORG. idiots and for his attorney general was right in line with and for all the progress we HAVE made in our efforts in Afganestan and Iraq. AS we did after DEC 7, 1941 when we were viciously attacked in Pearl harbor, OUR president did what any great president would do ( with the least bit of guts ) When attacked on your own soil. President Bush has kept our great city's and subarbs from being attacked again by taking the fight to our enamies. any thing short of that would be uneceptable !! All accounts of lately show much progress in the war fronts. It's the political side that needs help. theres an old saying " YOU CAN LEAD A HORSE TO WATER BUT YOU CANT MAKE HIM DRINK TILL HE IS READY " The people we are talking about have been treated in ways so horrible and tourcherously different than anything we as americans could even concieve for over 30 years under saddam and hundreds of years before that. SHAME ON those who think that we or the Iraqi people should be able to work out there differences and move on with a new and SO new way of life FREEDOM did not happen over nite for the USA either OUR founding fathers hashed and rehashed our constitution for many years with melt downs full fledge braws in fighting out fighting everything you could imagine. Iraq's legacy will be decided by IRAQ, How great the forsight of our founding fathers to record all of this so OUR president could give this gift of freedom to the Iraq people by helping to stablize there country while they work out the problems they have. As far as Bin Laden goes He has been in hiding for over 6 years 6 YEARS he hasn't seen his own freedom,, he is living an existance of looking over his shoulder or up to the skies for bombs instead of his god, what worse of a fate could he endour in one of OUR court rooms GOD BLESS AMERICA

Matt
Don't get me wrong, I detest Bush. My point was that in no way, shape or form can he cancel, postpone or otherwise prevent the elections from taking place next November. Anyone that believes that probably wears a tinfoil hat at night.

BTW, that A in high school translated to a 3.76 in History/Poli Sci.

As far as Boulder goes, I had a blast when I visited there a few years ago. It is still a hotbed of far left liberalism, does the name Ward Churchill sound familiar, merely an obseration.

Here is what President Bush said about bin Laden on March 13th, 2002:

‘I truly am not that concerned about him’ ... ‘Deep in my heart I know the man is on the run, if he’s alive at all’

It's unfortunate that he didn't take his own advice 5 years ago. Or 4 years ago. Or 3 years ago. Or 2 years ago. Or last year. Do you suppose he'll take it now?

Jim in Topeka,

Why where the "W's" missing from the keyboards? Who do you think took them? Do you honesty believe 9-11 was only planned after Pres Bush entered the White House? When these guys wanted to learn how to fly but not takeoff and land, who was in office and where was the intel then? Was Bin Laden not offered to Clinton? How did so many Dems get "duped" into voting for the war? There is enough blame for both parties. While I am grateful for the opportunity for all of us to disagee and disent, your arguments are weak!

>GOD BLESS BUSH FOR TRYING TO PROTECT US !! U DUMMYCRATS!!

Aside from the annoying use of all caps, it is disheartening to know that there are millions in this county like ol' Phill in Grand Isle. Democrats aren't dummys, Phill, they are just a little more level-headed when it comes to national and world issues. Yes, we all want to protect America from terrorism and other threats, but bombing and invading countries in a quest to control their oil is not exactly the best route to take. It actually creates more terrorism and hatred to the US.

DO YOU GET THAT PHILL?

Sorry to pick on you personally to make a point for all Bush defenders.

Bob, Seattlle

George will be remmbered as the President when 9-11 occured. He shall be rembered as a reactionary cowboy, who was handed world opinion on a plater and managed to turn absolute world support into total distain.

He sahll be remmbered for his absolute disregard of law and his mishandleing of what should have been (as unnessary as it was) fast and decisive victory over Iraq and the removal of Saddam, the entire action to include reconstruction should have envolved our forces on the ground from start to finish in less than 18 months. He shall be remmbered as swearing to the American public that bin Laden woulf be hunted dwon dead or alive and leaving office with bin Laden still evading capture very much alive. He shall be remmbered as the guy who was handed a surplus and nation owing 5.9 Trillion dollars, leaving office with no surplus and the nation owing 10 Trillion dollars. He shall be remmbered as the guy that laughed at California when they asked for help because of the manipulation of the energy market, saying that his good friends at Enron proclaimed it the free market economy working. He shall be remmbered as the guy that entered office with gasoline at 41.25/ GAL and left office with $4.00/ Gal gasoline. He shall be remmbered as the guy that started office with a great American City named New Oreleans, enough said.

Yes George shall be remmbered.

President Bush will be remembered in history as one who almost single handedly 'stood up' to the formost threat to mankind in this time. We need more that will continue in this fashion as opposed to spineless whimpering that truly puts our nation, and indeed - mankind, in grave peril.

Don't yall understand! Yall telling our enemies that we were wrong. Don't do that.GeorgeJr. is allowing us to sleep here instead of having to sleep there. If the White House gets bombed, it will be on you Democrat's hands. GeorgeJr. and Cheney are doing their part by sending our warriors over there. GeorgeJr. and Cheney said they would suit up but their close friends won't let them. They say we need someone to protect us here at home.

Randy, Bush has in fact undone previously clear-seeming guarantees of the constitution and federal statute, so don't assume you know anything about civics b/c you got an A in high school. See: torture, enemy combatants, wiretapping of Americans, extraordinary rendition, etc.

p.s., noting that someone is from a place that is known for people of a particular political stripe does nothing to discredit that person nor bolster your own opinions. it is just evidence of your hostility to that worldview, and perhaps person and region.

Who was President when 9-11 occurred. Who had received briefings on bin Laden from Clark immediately following the oath of office. Who ignored Clark and had a hissy fit because the "W's" were missing off of White House computer key boards. Who spent most of the time prior to 9-11 on vactaion. Who said make me a War President and we will have two terms. Who decided that he was above the wishes of Congress and could change Congressional legislation by writing in the margins that he disagreed with it and would nor follow it, and then turn around and sign the legislation making it the law of the land for everyone but him. Who has no concept of what good intelligence is verus what he wants to hear. Who charges ahead like a bull in the China shop and refuses to listen to anyone after he has decided that its his way or no way.

"""GOD BLESS BUSH FOR TRYING TO PROTECT US !! U DUMMYCRATS!! """

Well, if he "tries" and fails miserably, increasing the threat of terrorism (as acknowledged by our own intelligence services) through his shortsighted policies and mangled execution of war that has left so many maimed and dead Americans, does god still bless him? Wouldn't god prefer someone with the wisdom to both try and succeed? Maybe let's try a Democrat.

It's beyond Bush at this point, folks. our problems started way before GW and frankly was in 1948 as pointed out by Christiane Amanpour in her God's Warrior's show about Islamic Extremism and where it got its start. Take a look at the book called Milestones - By Sayyid Qutb. Long ago this war got started. Now we're in the thick of it. The world is watching us squabble over stupid things now. Forget Bush. We're hosed if we think it is up to one man. It's our entire American society. Check out that book and Epicenter by Joel Rosenberg. Both will give a glimpse of where we are going.....

The intellectual element on this blog is almost overwhelming. The combined brainpower here would be almost enough to toast a slice of bread. I just don't think I can hang with sharp-witted phrases like "bush sux" and "bush is rediculus" and "yeah you dummie". Every time I try to argue with "the Left" I'm put in my place with a humbling disparity of gray matter. I surrender.

spinstopper -

I agree, 9/11 is an American tragedy which is why it offends me that the President invokes 9/11 all the time for things that have nothing to do with national security. The same goes for Rudy Giuliani.

This fight isn't about the safety of the american people, this is about Bush covering his rear from congressional oversight.

Bush's rants about Code Pink and MoveOn.org are nothing more than bumper-sticker slogans for the and unwashed so-called "conservative" masses who are Jones-ing for someone to bash as their "leader" and his administration self-destruct. If he had heeded and responded to the warnings in the summer of 2001 of Bin Laden's plans to attack the U.S., we probably wouldn't be in this sorry state now.

I like how Bush compared Lenin and Hitler. The comparison to the two is rediculous and offensive to anyone who has a basic understanding of history. He said that Lenin was responsible for tens of millions of deaths and bringing the world to the brink of thermo"nucular" war, despite the fact that Lenin died 20 years before the U.S. developed and used nuclear weapons exclusively against civilans. There is no doubt that Lenin was an excessively cruel human being, but even the highest believed number of those killed by the Reds during the Russian Civil War is not even a third of those killed during the Iraq War. It's also interesting to note that the people who stood up to Lenin were fascistic monarchists, and the ones who stood up to fascists before and during WWII were communists, anarchists and socialists.

You don't need to be a conservative to continue to support this loser. Just delusional and blind. But you neo-cons think that name-calling your opposition is reasonable political discourse. I've heard your cheap-shot talk-show robots, and they only care about the Constitution when a Democrat is in office.

We need a REAL conservative in office. Not one who states that his opponents should "spend more time responding to the warnings of terrorists like Osama bin Laden" when he himself has ignored the man for four years. Mr. President, just what have YOU been doing about bin Laden? You certainly aren't interested in him unless you can use him against your political opponents, or as a means to motivate by fear and hate. Typical neo-con strategy that is wearing quite thin.

Neo-cons, you are all absolutely pathetic. After 25 years of your mishandling this government and destroying the civil liberties of our Republic, I am glad that the American people have finally had enough of your delusions of Empire.

Yeah and if George Bush had performed like the Commander-In-Chief he was supposed to be and not a cowboy, Osama bin Laden would be dead or in captivity. Instead, Bush evading the responsibility for the consequences of his actions and attempting to shift the blame to others.

We also have the White House press secretary, trying whitewash Bush's failure to lead the Nation properly, telling us that bin Laden, responsible for the deaths of almost 3,000 people on U.S. soil, is "irrelevant" and "not in control."

I believe in military terms this is called "deriliction of duty." Too bad it is not an impeachable offense.

Sorry, Georgie, your family friend is right where you and the Saudis left him, wherever that is.

You failed to get bin Laden, you snivelling, National Guard-deserting loser, because he's part of all of this, isn't he? ...Conveniently showing up just before elections, just before Paetreus' testimony...who do you think you're fooling?

Time for the Dems to tell Bush to eat it on this one.

Bush is pouting and throwing a tantrum because his attorney general nominee is facing problems. Typical Bush.

"some in Washington should spend more time responding to the warnings of terrorists like Osam bin Laden and the requests of our commanders on the ground and less time responding to the demands of MoveOn.org bloggers and Code Pink protestors." UNBELIEVEABLE!!!! This coming from the acting President who ignored the threats from Bin Laden which resulted in September THE 11th.

I praise the efforts of MoveON and
Code Pink. Most of us agree with their logic yet do nothing about it. These good folks have the integrity and drive to protest this loser administration and their faulty, evil, warped policies. Look up Fascism and you will realize how scary Bush and his cronies are.

The war-mongering, macho attitudes that resonates throughout parts of our great nation is fueled by little-dicked followers who can't think for themselves. (over-compensation). They need a leader and unfortunately have found
one in Bush. There is no sense in trying to talk some sense in these guys, they will always FOLLOW because they lack the tools to ever lead. I am afraid many of the GOP lawmakers are among this crowd.

Courage folks. If we can get through one more year of this hell, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Bush plays the 9/11 card. Well he's never done THAT before. What's next, Guiliani playing the 9/11 card?

with regards to the moveoners and code pinkeye I agree the dems shouldnt be in bed with them, however Im am pretty fed up with the boogey man stories. Doesnt OBL have kidney problems and doesnt he need dialasis for that problem, how good is health care in pakistan and afganistan if a cave dweller can stay alive this long with out treatment. In other words OBL is probalby dead, lets get out of iraq and finish off the rest of OBLs' clan.

Bush using 9/11 to justify a confirmation for Mukasey is a fear tactic and shows no respect for 9/11 victims. And to use bin laden and our commanders on the ground in the same sentence makes no sense. God Bless America.
