Obama: Cheney is 'a crazy uncle in the attic'

Obama is sworn into the Senate by his eighth cousin, Vice President Cheney.

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina (CNN) – At a campaign event Saturday, Sen. Barack Obama called his distant cousin, Vice President Dick Cheney, "a crazy uncle in the attic."

Obama was referencing the recent revelation by the Vice President's wife, Lynne Cheney, that he and the Vice President are distantly related.

"For the first time in a long time, the name George Bush will not appear on the ballot," he told the crowd of about 500 people at Converse College in Spartanburg.

"The name Dick Cheney, my cousin, will not appear on the ballot," Obama said. "We had been trying to hide that cousin thing for a long time. Everybody's got a black sheep in the family. A crazy uncle in the attic."

How impressive that a presidential candidate makes such a juvenile statement.
I can only imagine the problems for our country if he were elected president and chose to blurt out another gem such as this one.
This man wants to be considered presidential material? GROW UP!

Didn't Senator Obama take his oath of office on the Q'ran and not the King James Bible. Should we trust this man? What are his true feelings regarding Islam? Is he Arab or American? Please don't tell me his an Arab-American. We've heard enough about ethic Americanism. We are all Americans and not African-American, Chinese-American, Polish-American, we're just Americans who speak English.

That is a childish and disrespectful thing to say about our current Vice President from a Presidential candidate, regardless of relation or party.

Very poor manners of a presidential candidate to engage in name-calling. Is this a mark of his lack of maturity?

Actually Cheney is not in any attic. He's behind the Wizard's curtain pulling Boy W's imperialist puppet strings. And accruing big bucks for Halliburton's war business.

Wow, I don't like, nor do I support Obama, but I thought that he was the type of man that was above this type of retarded, unsubstantiated attack.

God help the good old USA if any of the democrats get into office as president.

Hey, if Satan can get George Bush and Dick Cheney elected TWICE then I think we should be happy God is helping a Democrat get elected this time.

This proves that Obama and other liberals are anti-family; to insult a family member like that. Whatever happened to respect your elders.

Cheney should pull Obama over his knees and beat his hiney with an old hickory switch

I think Obama actualy missed on this one. Cheney isn't crazy. He knows exactly what he's doing. Lying, cheating , conniving, manipulating the American people for his self serving interests. It's all really well designed and those who voted his ticket bought into it. 7 years and I've been asking those people what we have gained from this administration. NO good answers yet. But I haven't asked the cronies he's set up to make money at the taxpayers expense.

Sort of like George Bush searching for weapons of mass destruction at a political diner. How funny was that to the parents of dead soldiers.
MAYBE YOU NEED TO GROW UP!

What fun! I'm almost able to forget that we should be discussing the candidates' policies. Maybe for an attempt at real reporting, CNN could ask Obama about this.

I find his statements about the mentally ill offensive and demeaning. Will this be the norm in his stance towards the mentally ill? That they should be locked up in the attic tucked away from sight? This man is running for president making lame jokes like this! My god, where's the tolerance? Absolute bigoted and ignorant statement.

If this had been a conservative who said this you people would have been all over him as a bigot.

I think CNN used that humor part one which they edited and now this is part two bringing the same thing in different version. Cnn, if you are not campaigning for hillary show me some fair reporting for all the candidates!!! This is sickening at best after America had gone the turmoil in the last 8years and I don't think anyone cares

Such class, what a low life, Obama, if you can't fight without going to the lowest level, get off the stage!
You would not make a pimple on Dick Cheney's behind, as far as intelligence, and having the grace of good manners, something you are devoid of.

Wow. This is all dumb...and circular.

Cheney jokes this week that he's Darth Vadar. Then Obama jokes that Cheney's like a crazy uncle in the attic.

Now all these folks here jump up and down and call Obama disrespectful of the Dick Cheney, who has just spoken so disrespecfully of himself.

No one is looking good in the smarts or stature departments on this one.

Obama is a Christian, it's pretty well known fact about him.

But I don't understand your post, are you saying that Muslims can't be American? Last time I checked America ran on the principles of Freedom, you are allowed to exercise whichever religion you choose.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
