So much for using drivers licenses to keep track of illegals, to get the poor things out of the shadows. One license for 20 men, roaming about, lying about their names and addresses?
I don't think so.

WE follow the rule of law. However, it would be a foolish, costly mistake to assume that giving illegal aliens licenses would make THEM suddenly follow the rule of law. After all, an illegal alien is here....illegally.

So what WOULD the licenses accomplish? An undeserved feeling of entitlement, an affirmation of their growing larceny, a bit of reinforcement to go out and break ANOTHER rule or law, and the opportunity to use that license to obtain other documents and make credit card purchases they have no inclination whatsoever to pay for.

The only other major outcome of providing drivers licennses to illegal aliens comes in the form of inadvertently providing breeder documents for those who have snuck into our country not so much to commit fraud as to commit terrorism. Something to think about the next time you board a plane.

My interest are to deport the Illegal's and gain positive controll over our borders. Their is a legal way to come to AMERICA and that is regulate by laws and our Goverment Elected should enfore them or get out of the way and let someone in who will.

This is what the VAST MAJORITY of LEGAL AMERICANS DEMAND. IT A CLER PICTURE AND YET THOSE IN WASHINGTON CHOOSE NOT TO ENFORCE OUR LAWS. Boy is it time to have a good house cleaning in Washington.

I have more faith in our founding fathers than I do a Clinton. One last thing, let's just enforce our current laws on immigration.

While Hillary mumbled and stumpled her way to a convoluted answer, Tim Russert asked Obama straight out (during Obama's response that he was confused by Hillary's response) do you support the NY governor's proposal to require illegal immigrants to have driver's licenses? Obama's answer was "yes and I disagree with Senator Dodd, because it is a public safety issue". You may not agree with his response but at least he had the integrity and conviction to state what he believed. In fact, Tim Russert followed up this question with "does any of the other candidates think it is a good idea to require illegal aliens to have driver's licenses?" GUESS WHAT! All the other candidates acknowledged YES, except Dodd and Clinton. Dodd, I understand. He made his point as to why illegal immigrants should not have a driver's license. But Hillary ?! I believe it even more, that trusting what Hillary says and what she does is a major problem.

Surprise surprise. No it's no surprise to find another liberal activist professor shamelessly yelling support for open US borders. But using fussy math as the basis of that argument?

Illegal immigration is the problem–not illegal immigrants. We have illegal immigrantion because: We have an ass-backwards immigration policy that makes it prohibitively costly, intrusive, frustrating, and often futile to try to immigrate to the U.S. legally; a fantasy that we can realistically seal a 1,800 mile border against illegal immigration; business interests drooling over the prospect of a $2/hr labor pool, and federal authorities willing to wink at the practice of hiring illegals. Illegal immigrants wouldn't be illegal if it we had an immigration policy that was coherent, efficient, and navigable. There wouldn't be illegal immigrants if the only work available was for people legally present, and if employers who hired illegals were heavily fined and sanctioned to the extent that none of them would ever risk it. The vast majority of illegal immigrants in this country are people whose presence here would be an asset to the United States, not a burden as many of you seem to believe, but for our incredibly wrong-headed immigration policy.

You all have been seriously duped, meanwhile. Someone high up finally figured out you're pissed off, and identified a convenient scapegoat for you in the illegal immigrant. A couple of people here have tried to point out the basic errors in the anti-immigration talking points, and have tried to explain how kicking everyone out and building a big fence is a completely hare-brained plan, but right away it's back to the same absurdities about bankrupting social security and taking our jobs away, and the calls for a house-to-house kick-in-the-door round-up scenario.

Believe me, I was all ready to roll my eyes at Hillary Clinton's remarks during the debate. Then I actually read them. Not only were they blunt and straightforward, but they actually provided a much better explanation for Spitzer's licensing plan than Spitzer himself gave. States are frustrated. They are NOT the federal government and enforcing immigration laws is NOT within their purview. Regulating the operation and insurance of motor vehicles, and the conduct of their drivers, IS. Congress has not passed immigration reform, has not figured out what to do about the 13 million illegal immigrants present in the country, and has not figured out what the enforcement plan will be going forward. Meanwhile, the states have a job to do, and are being told that they can't do it because they might inadvertently violate the REAL ID Act or extend some sacred driving privilege to illegal immigrants. I have no question about Mrs. Clinton's position on this–it's "what the hell do you want Governor Spitzer to do while we're in Washington squabbling about how high we should build the wall on our border with Mexico?"
