My fiancé is an illegal immigrant we have seen 2 lawyers who have both told us to lay low and not to come forward because something is going to change. Even if I was 9 months pregnant and already married to my fiancé and we tried to go through the laws and pay the fines and go through the correct process so that we could live without worry and good taxpaying law abiding citizens (which is what he wants to be) he will get thrown out and banned for 10 years.
I understand people being against illegal immigration reform acts. But something should be done for people who are married to US citizens and or have children that are US citizens. To have that be black and white and people being deported with a 10 year band is absurd

To: truecitizen, orange county, ca

EXCELLENT QUESTION for Hillary in the next debate: Why didn't the Clinton Administration ignore the Jordan Commission on Immigration Reform?

The Commission on Immigration Reform (CIR) was formed by Congress in 1990, to critically examine United States immigration policies. The bipartisan commission was chaired by the late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, the highly esteemed civil rights advocate, and is often referred to as the Jordan Commission

Recommendations on Illegal Immigration

The first report issued by the CIR, U.S. Immigration Policy: Restoring Credibility, focused primarily on illegal immigration. Its main recommendations were:

(1)Improve border management: The CIR found current enforcement inadequate to deter illegal immigration and increased training for border officials and increased resources for enforcement. It emphasized the need to prevent illegal entry to minimize the need for apprehension afterward.

(2) Eliminate the "pull" of jobs: A main motivator for illegal immigration is the ease with which illegal aliens can work in the U.S. The CIR recommended additional barriers to illegal employment, including a computerized registry to verify work eligibility and the full use of already-existing (but seldom invoked) penalties against employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens.

(3) Mitigate impact costs: Because immigration policy and enforcement are controlled by the federal government, the CIR recommended that the federal government be responsible for mitigating the fiscal impact of illegal immigration on the states and local communities. This responsibility includes making illegal aliens ineligible for non-emergency public services, holding sponsors financially responsible for the immigrants they sponsor, and assisting states and localities with the financial burden for incarceration, education, emergency medical care, and other costs associated with illegal immigration. (The commission noted that methods for accurately establishing such costs need to be implemented.)

Perhaps some of the papers that are not to be release until AFTER THE ELECTIONS address the Clinton Administrations INCOMPETENCE on immigration reform.

Of course, Hillary supports driver licensing of illegal aliens. This would the first step for them to participate in our elections...and to alter the outcome in the Democrat's favor. Afterall, this is the same woman that wanted to abolish the Electoral College following the 2000 Presidential race. Hillary wants the country's population centers, which tend to vote Democrat, to determine the outcome. Never mind you midwesterns...who tend to be Republican, anyway.

I don't know about you people, but I trust our founding fathers more than any Clinton! One last thought...let's enforce our current laws on immigration.

Yeah, that is why they need to use bicycles Rose Hann. We break laws and make exceptions, everytime the law is inconvienent for someone. I would think this would be obvious. Spitzer is acting like some dictator. It is absurd.

I have added comments twice and here goes attempt number three. CNN needs to stand behind our first ammensent rights. Lou Dobbs gets to call Gov. and President, and Congress idiots, but we can't say Lou Dobbs is part of the problem.
I agree with illegals having driver's license and INSRANCE. Many already have fraudulent licenses. An accident with one can cost a citizen higher insurance rates. Are we really caring about the Middle Class? According to Lou Dobbs a so called advocate of Middle Class doesn't seem to understand. Oh, and if your a guest on Lou Dobbs and disagree, don't expect to be heard. Perhaps Wolf Blitzer can allow those he interviews to offer the consderation of allowing them to answer a question! This is a democracy people, we don't all need to agree. I do like Jack Cafferty, he reads even negative email comments. I'm sure Lou Dobbs gets as many, but, he prefers the "Atta Boy Lou". As for Dobbs trying to convert his viewers too become Independents, they still are going to vote and the disservice is the Idependent can no longer participate in the Primaries depending on your state. It's rediculous! Also the illegal immigrant or aliens as he prefers doesn't offer a solution, only critisism to those who disagree.

to ms clinton, then if you believe that if they have committed a crime they should be deported all illegals should be deported... They have committed a crime by coming into the country illegally... why should they have the right to wait in line to come into the country then? We know that they are willing to do what ever they want be it illegal or not... What is to say if we let them in after this, if they want something they will not just take it... A CRIME IS A CRIME...

could you please explain why the clinton administration ignored and refused to implement the jordan commission's recommendations on immigration policy in the 1990's?

It is wrong for any state or local government to give out official documents to people illegally in our country, especially drivers' licenses, which are the keys to the kingdom, so to speak. This is aiding and abetting illegal aliens, which is against the law. State and local government have the duty to make sure they are not aiding and abetting illegal aliens.

Hillary says, "I do not believe we can resolve this problem unless we bring people out of the shadows". Why don't we just deport them. If we just get rid of all these illegals that would be the end of the problem. If Hillary and Spitzer put half the effort into deporting the illegals that they are putting into giving them drivers licenses we could be rid of the illegal invaders.

I think Hillary is more interested in votes than she is about drivers licenses for illegals. Unfortunately, the rest of us legal citizens will end up paying the price of what these votes for Hillary will cost for years to come.

Come on CNN. Stop Censoring Post from people against Hillary and her stupidity for supporting this issue.

You have already buried this down in the blogs yet this has the highest comments of any issue today.

Hillary is going down for this issue and so is your reputation for supporting her. She can't unring the bell for what she said on Live TV. And could not defend herself when confronted by the other more qualified canidates and the moderator.

It's a fact that Hillary bases every opinion she has off of poll numbers and how an issue is polling. Only she screwed up big by supporting this, then waffled by saying she does not, then says she does but does not once again.

She can not get elected now and even if she did we would have to wait till the polls are taken to find out what she would do.

What would she do in a real crisis? Turn on CNN and wait for her opinion to be spoon fed to her?

Hillary just went Yeah Haw like Howard Dean did 4 years ago. Time to move on and pick another canidate CNN. Just like you did 4 years ago.

Giving licenses to foreign nationals residing in this country illegally solves what problem? It will force them all to have insurance? This is the point? So, then what will happen to these non-citizen drivers if they choose not to get a license and insurance? I suppose the same as now, which is nothing. problem not solved.

anyway, who is defining the problems of this country? uninsured drivers? please! how about too many drivers on the roads! (wonder why...) how about too many kids in classrooms? (hmmm...)how about emergency rooms used for common healthcare, and hospitals closing due to non-payments...how about crime, gangs, disease, identity theft, welfare and social services burden, prison overcrowding, voter fraud, post 9/11 borderINsecurity, once-good-paying-and-available jobs(i.e. construction work), profiteering by corporations (the southern plantations also argued they NEEDed the slaves), and fairness to other would-be immigrants from other countries. What about THESE problems? I blame only the politicians, not the immigrants, for enabling/encouraging mass immigration over the past decades. We had Amnesty in the 80's with the condition of then enforcing our LAWS. But the enforcing our laws part of the deal never happened. And, it seems, never will. Money, votes, profits and power. That's what they get. We get...all the above.

This should be a Democratic issue. This country exploits the illegal alien work force and keeps wages for many jobs low. The reason no American will do many of these jobs is that there is always an illegal willing to do it for less. Without the ready pool of cheap labor the big winner would be the American worker.

Just the thought that a person could sneak into this country and be given a legal government ID should make everyone uneasy. Think about it the next time you board a plane.

Hilarious how Hillary found a way to blow the election in 2007. If you want to see what a Hillary Presidency would do, just look at Michigan and its Socialist, big Govt, big TAX, anti-gun, anti-Big Three, anti-life, pro socialized medicine, anti-business, anti-Christian, paid by the Unions liberal Lawyer Governor Jennifer Granholm. The state of Michigan IS SCREWED with the highest unemployment and third world economy. Jenny's answer? You guessed it, a MASSIVE TAX INCREASE. Liberals like Hillary and Jenny call taxes "revenue" as if the state worked for its money. The state of Michigan IS ONE UGLY BABY and Hillary wants to do the same for the rest of you.

Posted By James, NJ : November 5, 2007 2:29 pm

James, can you make the difference between acknowledging an issue that needs to be solved (by states or at federal level as she proposed) and agreeing to give driver's license to immigrants? You all play 'stupid' and don't listen and reason a bit.

I cannot imagine how so many pretend not to understand that the issue of illegal immigrants is not solved with a Yes/No answer as it was insinuated in the debate. It would be irresponsible to do so.

“But finally I do not believe we can resolve this problem unless we bring people out of the shadows,” Clinton said, adding that undocumented immigrants should have a pathway to citizenship but they’d need to register, pay taxes, pay fines, learn English, and wait in line after those who’ve come to the United States legally. Those who have committed crimes, she said, should be deported.

Mrs. Clinton I'd like to formally let you know that crossing the USA borders illegally IS a crime!

Once again Hillary and the Clintons must wait till they see how an issue plays out on CNN and the press before making a real decision. I grow tired of this policy by polls attitude.

Grow up and grow a pair and make a decision and actually stick by it Hillary.

God forbid you are elected and something important happens. Then what will you do? Sit back and wait to see what the polls suggest then do that?

We want a president of ACTION not reaction.

Keep beating her with this issue till she hangs herself from flip flopping back and forth ever few days.

In NYS,you have to keep insurance or your license and registration is suspended the first day. We have license plate readers installed in patrol cars that read 10,000 plates a day while on the road. In order to avoid suspension, you have to turn in plates at a DMV,get a receipt, and produce it to your insurance company to cancel. Also, you can't register to vote at DMV unless your records crosscheck with other agencies to prove you are a citizen. You cannot buy guns legally without a backround check that also crosschecks for citizenship. Unfortunately, none of these agencies are allowed to verify your ID independantly, thanks to Homeland security. So if you need ID,you have to already have it to get it. Which if you need it,you're not allowed to have it. I cannot believe that this is not intentional. With the fight over voter ID,it's obvious to me that people are being denied their rights of citizenship. There's a reason those 20 million "undocumented americans" are not called "undocumented foreign nationals."

Here are the people who will vote for Hillary, and should I say democrat no matter what.

1. Yellow dog democrats who dont' know what she stands for, all they know is there great grandparents, grandparents, and parents voted democrat, and by dang they will too, they don't bother to find out how leftist/communist the party has become.

2. The drug stoned brain dead hippies of the Clinton generation.

3. Liberal progressive college professors.

4.Moveon.org types financed by George Soros, a Frenchmen and a Socialist.

5. Secular Humanist who are so intolerant of christians, they can't wait till God is totally erased from this country.

6. Illegal aliens, and the dead, brought back to life by groups like ACORN just in time to vote.

7. The Socialist and Communist party's that are alive and well in the USA.

8. The think they know it all elitist, and hollywood types.

6. Any slime that has crawled out from under a rock, and hates this country..those who like being able to live off the hard work of others, those who get a thrill out of seeing how many baby's can be slaughtered every year, and hope they can up the ante the next year.

7. The criminal element, as democrats would love to see those who have committed federals crimes be able to vote again, and even wanted to pass a bill allowing them to do so. The criminals best friend is a liberal democrat.

So here is just a few elements of the human race that will be voting democrat, I am sure I could spend all day lisiting more, but I haven't time.

You duplicitous liberals are some joke. I remember that the argument used to be "Well these people have to get to work so they need to drive, etc. etc. So you never heard of a bicycle?. That's right, a bicycle. That is being quite "liberal" with people who have never been given premission to be here by the general public in the first place. I worked with a women, years ago, who drove her bike, to and from work ten miles everyday. She had a drivers license ,but did it for exercise. But that isn't how the liberal mind works, despite the fact that liberal implies more, more options. No, what you do is set of an either or choice, it's what you have in common with El Presidente Bush, your with me or against me. My way or the highway. Just like the moronic governor of New York.

Simple concept I'm having a lot of difficulty understanding as to why it's not being done: Instead of spending our money to benefit illegals, how about putting it towards getting them out of here??? If the government needs help finding them, all they have to do is go to the next "immigration rights" rally or corner of a home depot.
To get a drivers license in California, you have to give a thumbprint, social security number and verification of legal presence. Why isn't this the case everywhere?

Ok CNN I get it... Lefties can make comments comparing our President and Vice President to Hitler and other mass murderers but I, from the right, cannot compare HRC to a well known character from the Wizard of Oz.

If the broom fits...ride it.

Careful CNN, your double standard is showing.

HH Pittsburgh-if you were following my posts you'd know. I am a legal citizen and always have been until the patriot act and homeland security imposed contradictory regulations on the SSA and DMV that bar people like me from obtaining government issued ID. This lunacy was foisted upon the public in the name of "terror" with the intent of pushing voter ID laws to level the field since no thinking person would continue to vote republican. This year, this patriot act was used to declare me an "unknown financial entity" thus cutting me off from my assets. If you read some of these posters claiming that I should be deported, you can clearly see the intent of this agenda. According to SSA officials,I'm only one of millions that are being persecuted by a politically motivated "security" apparatus. It's entirely a witch-hunt by this criminal element we call the bush administration. Right now,I cannot buy or sell property or travel or use banks. I was born here! I have twelve pages of documentation proving my citizenship! If they're doing it to me,a wealthy established landowner, how do you think the poor and elderly are holding up? This massive attempt of dis-enfranchisement is simply un-acceptable. My identity could easily be verified through my fingerprints at the pentagon. I want real ID that uses fingerprinting. No more cards like mine that can be made obsolete by executive order or congressional stupidity.

I think she's right…something must be done with this people,(inmigrants) they deserve I.D. or drivers licenses, but must pay fines, and get a background check. This is a free country with open doors to anyone.

Posted By Mariela, Los Angeles, CA.

Wake up, Mariela!

First, U.S Citizens do NOT owe Illegals a thing. Illegals do NOT "deserve" licenses. Licenses are not a right, but a priviledge to law-abiding citizens with valid social security cards. Being Illegal means just that - they are here illegally, having broken Federal Law by entering the U.S. This is not a free-country, contrary to what you may tell yourself. I pay taxes and work hard. Illegals don't.

Furthermore, NYS code requires a valid Social Security card to obtain a NYS driver's license. Tell me, how are we supposed to do a "background check" on people who don't have a "background" here in the U.S without a social security number and why is this law being ignored by Dictator Spitzer?

Fact of the matter is, the majority of NYS citizens DON'T want Illegals given driver's licenses. Unless Spitzer is planning to deport illegals (as he should), then there is no sense giving them a ticket to drive. And being that Spitzer was once NYS Attorney General, he of all people should know the laws and uphold them fully!

Also, what message does this send to those that are going through the process of legally becoming U.S Citizens? It's like a slap in the face to everyone abiding the laws of the land!

I suggest you do a bit more research on this.

Another ridiculous point of view on this issue, this time expressed by Hillary! There is simple no logical reason to provide motor vehicle licenses to illegal immigrants. According to Hillary, this will bring them out of the shadows. But to what benefit?? Unless your plan is to immediately arrest and deport them as soon as they apply for a license, what possible benefit to our Country does having millions of "illegal" immigrants driving around with legal driver licenses buy us? Nothing!!

It seems to me we the american citizens are getting force fed legalization of illegal aliens. Barak Obama, Hillary Clinton and George Bush all seem to have the same plan.

Amnesty with some minor consequences.

WE DO NOT WANT THAT PLAN.

We want control of our borders and ENFORCEMENT of current laws.

If need be New Laws to make the consequences of invading our country illegally more noticible.

The Clinton "spin machine" again at work. Hillary is 4 days too late with her response! If you don't have the courage or conviction to state publicly what you state privately on the same topics, then you shouldn't be running for president. I personally don't think giving illegals driver's license is a good idea, but am willing to listen to proposals of why (and what type of license) they should have. If you going to be serious about public safety (as well as public health) either train illegals or deport them on the spot once they are identified in an accident, regardless of family situation.

This is to garner more votes from illegals. Separate the right to vote from the granting of drivers licenses and see what her opinion is then. If the illegals would not have been here illegally in the first place.... they wouldn't have run into anybody. Your kidding yourselves. If they are willing to be here illegally do you really think they will adhere to any law.

She is trying to pass the buck here and blame the executive branch of the government for something the legislative is responsible for and that is immigration reform. What Hillary doesn’t understand is the executive branch implements the immigration laws her Democratic Senate create. Where is the NEW IMMIGRATION LAWS HILLARY? WHERE IS THE IMMIGRATION REFORM? IT STARTS WITH YOU HILLARY. GOD help us if she becomes president. This country will take a turn for the worst you have never seen before. A turn history has seen before. Even worse than Jimmy Carters presidency. I was a child then and I still remember waiting in lines for 6 and 7 hours to fill up my parent’s car with gas. This is what we are heading towards.

...pandering to the illegal alien vote is all she's doing. Supporting violations of the law? Sounds like she's not taking her oath of office seriously.

Don't give me reasons to support illegal aliens or to justify support for amnesty. They violated them law - send them back.

Although the vehicle codes require drivers to have insurance (or some type of financial responsibility), there's nothing that monitors it continuously. Having a driver's license or owning/driving a car doesn't (in reality) have anything to do with insurance. Sure, you can get a policy long enough to register the car, then immediately cancel it.

How do I know? Probably based on the number of cites written...
