A waitress says Clinton didn't tip her during a recent diner stop.

NEW YORK (AP) — Let the record show: Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign knows how to leave a good tip.

The Democratic front-runner's tipping skills were called into question Thursday, after National Public Radio aired an interview with an Iowa waitress who served a sandwich to Clinton during a campaign visit last month.

Anita Esterday waited on the New York senator and her entourage at a Maid-Rite restaurant in Toledo, Iowa. Esterday posed for photos with Clinton and spoke of her plight as a single mother forced to work two jobs to make ends meet.

Clinton later incorporated Esterday's story into her campaign stump speech. Pictures of their meeting appeared in newspapers and on TV newscasts.

In the NPR interview, Esterday said that while she had enjoyed meeting Clinton, she hadn't gotten much out of her 15 minutes of fame.

"I mean, nobody got left a tip that day," Esterday said, adding "I don't think she understood at all what I was saying."

Esterday's comments were potentially harmful, undermining Clinton's appeal to working class voters, especially women. Rival campaigns quickly e-mailed the story to reporters, as did the Republican National Committee.

But Brad Crawford, manager of the Toledo Maid-Rite, said Clinton's campaign aides paid the bill for lunch and left a tip to be divided among the servers.

"They all paid their bill and they left a tip. They paid it all that same day when they left and everything was good," he said.

Crawford said he didn't know why Esterday may not have received any of the money.

"If she got left out it wasn't because they meant to leave her out," Crawford said of Esterday. "If something happened with the disbursement, it's probably my fault."

A call to Esterday's home was not immediately returned.

Clinton campaign spokesman Phil Singer said the campaign paid $157 for lunch and left another $100 for the tip.

During her 2000 Senate race, Clinton failed to tip a server at the Village House Restaurant in Albion, N.Y. Two weeks later, after some negative media attention, Clinton phoned the server to apologize. Her campaign also sent a $100 savings bond.

Oh my God, all this over a tip. Just send the waitress $100 unknown and get on with it!

JCL, Garrison KY   November 10th, 2007 8:16 am ET

My favorite reaction to this story comes from Anita Esterday herself (the waitress in the story) who was finally reached for comment by the New York Times. She had this to say about the media:

"You people are really nuts," she told a reporter during a phone interview. "There's kids dying in the war, the price of oil right now — there's better things in this world to be thinking about right now than who served Hillary Clinton at Maid-Rite and who got a tip and who didn't get a tip."

Thank you, Ms. Esterday. You may only be a waitress, but you have shown more journalistic insight than the news editors at CNN, NBC and ABC who approved running this story.

Lee Chang, Surrey, Canada   November 9th, 2007 6:03 pm ET

I was a waitress when I put myself to law school. I find that waitresses who stress about tips are usually those who deserve the least - poor work ethics, lazy and who see no further than the tips for the day. That's why tips are so important to them, they know the job will not be there for long.

Zach, Byers, Co   November 9th, 2007 3:56 pm ET

What is amazing is that if you read the comments left on this post you realize how many people cannot read or evidently cannot understand what was written. Yes she did not personally pay the bill. But there was a tip left. To much is made of little things like this and it is to bad some waitress is trying to get her 15 minutes of fame by defacing someone else. No wonder the campaign manager for Ronald Reagan once said with enough money and reporters I could get Mickey Mouse elected. In fact I all ready have :).

Hillary supporters; just think - you paid that %64 tip (and their lunch), that apparently went a bunch of chiselers. I shudder to think what she'd do with our tax dollars (after raising them).

Patrick, Philadelphia, PA   November 9th, 2007 1:06 pm ET

I am a tipped paid employee. Though I do not like the fact that Hilary does not tip, I agree that this is just gossip, not news. In a story like this I do not care what anyone says because if you were not involved you do not know.

anon, ny, ny   November 9th, 2007 12:54 pm ET

I am extremely disappointed with

a) CNN using a misleading headline ("Clinton sitffing a waitress by not leaving a tip") on its front page, and

b) some people here, presumably republicans and obama/edwards supporters, who condemn Hillary immediately without reading the whole story in CNN, which shows that Hillary did leave a tip.

What a shame, and what a bunch of ignorant and hateful people here.

Liberal Chic   November 9th, 2007 12:48 pm ET

josh :

You're a funny man. After all these years of small government and lower taxes talk from Republicans, you talk about Democrats' having trouble parting with their money? Why do Republicans not want higher taxes. Because they want to keep more of theirs — not that there's something inherently wrong with that.

Two, current Bush having had the worst budget deficits in history (four of them and his father the fifth worst), you talk about how Democrats free spend other people's money.

You've got to read more. Are you out of school yet?

Tom Dedham, Mass   November 9th, 2007 11:33 am ET

For you moron Clintonista's i'll write this real slow, this story and the conversation was created by NPR who has NOTHING to do with Fox news or Republicans. NPR didn't do the homework on this story.

NPR is mostly against Hillarity because she is not left-wing enough for their liking.

It was a misunderstanding and that is IT, CNN and some other networks reported this as gospel, but it is easier to blame the other side when you have nothing intelligent to add.

Can you explain how she DID screw someone in 2000, as you all love to explain and apologize for her and Billyboy.

"During her 2000 Senate race, Clinton failed to tip a server at the Village House Restaurant in Albion, N.Y. Two weeks later, after some negative media attention, Clinton phoned the server to apologize. Her campaign also sent a $100 savings bond".

Steve in SC   November 9th, 2007 11:32 am ET

Hilliary did leave a tip: "if you think you were stiffed, just wait until I get into the White House".

David, Gilbert Arizona   November 9th, 2007 10:27 am ET

I can't stand Hillary but even I think this is the stupidest article CNN has come up with in a long time.

What does this have to do with the issues? People saying this is typical Hillary wouldn't have voted for her anyway so who cares?

Rodney Dallas TX   November 9th, 2007 9:38 am ET

Oh, and for those of you saying this is NOT news worthy, obviously it is because the Repooplicans ran away with it. It obviously got most of you to read it and respond. Oh, and do me a favor. Actually READ the article before you respond. Many of you are still saying she didn't tip when her campaign and the manager himself said she did. Let me guess, Hillary paid him off for his silence. Clinton haters are so blind by their hatred that they can't even acknowledge the slightest little thing about her. She's not as bad as most of you make her out to be. Open your eyes at your favorite candidate and I'm quite sure you won't agree with everything they have to say either.

Rodney Dallas TX   November 9th, 2007 9:31 am ET

Of course some trashy redneck waitress who quit high school and is now raising 13 kids would say something like this. She wanted media attention. She wants a free ride. Her manager should fire her for this.

Will someone please tell the candidates that this country is not ruled by an aristocracy? Or maybe it is. Imagine it America: 4 years of Bush, then 8 years of Clinton, then 8 years of Bush, then 4 years of Clinton. It makes me sick just thinking about it.

Smartest person EVER   November 9th, 2007 8:48 am ET

This is generally not news but then again she's pulled this stunt before. But now the story changes from the fact that the meal was free and no tip was left to they paid for the meal and also left a tip. Perhaps they paid for it after the fact of all the media attention??? Anyone get a photocopy of that receipt??

Brett, Tampa FL   November 9th, 2007 8:39 am ET

I cannot believe how many people will post a comment without reading the entire article. We take action before becoming educated and thus make unwise decisions. How can 40% of the people polled today think Bush is doing a better job than his predecessor? Amazing!

Tere, FL   November 9th, 2007 8:37 am ET

Though I am an Obama supporter, I think this story is a non-issue just like the one of obama's plane landing at the wrong airport. As much as I dont like Hillary, CNN should have looked for more important news

Terry, El Paso, TX   November 9th, 2007 7:56 am ET

Clinton's campaign must be doing a very good job if this is all the dirt that the media can dig up on her.

As for tips, it would be a lot better if hotels and restaurants paid decent salaries to their employees and we simply did away with the custom of tipping. The original meaning of "TIPS" was a gratuity "to improve personal service." Now, the tip is considered part of the employee's wage.

AnaHadWolves, Philadelphia, PA, USA   November 9th, 2007 5:12 am ET

So, the Repooplicans are e-mailing this "huge story" around to abyone and everyone as proof os exactly what? The only "proof" that this non-story offers is that the Repooplicans are bereft of any actual ideas and are quick and eager to attempt to smear a Democrat with petty b.s..

Repooplicans: try to debate the issues and not non-issues. Oh, well…many if not most of you will be swept away in the '08 elections…thank God!

Very suspicious of Fox's … I mean CNN's structuring of this article to paint an innocuous situation as more than it was for those who don't read the whole thing.

Here's a tip for all candidates:

Before you try to emulate, sympathize, or beleive you understand people not in your political envelope (you know the place where powerful politicians are insulated form the rest of the real world)- walk a mile in their shoes, do a days work in their position, and base your opinion on personal information gathering, not what your high paid handlers tell you.

Oh, I find it amusing that politicians can count in the tens and hundreds of dollars how much each has to be spent on each vote they get in an election - yet can't cough up a $3 tip for lunch.

Anonymous   November 8th, 2007 9:54 pm ET

Totally disgraceful that this even made the "Political Ticker"… See, journalism is where you find out about a story then you report the facts. It is NOT printing a totally untrue rumor and giving the actual story way way way below the fold. Unreal. This is pathetic. Even amateur blogs know to do a little research first. Well, except the Right Wing bloggers, but still.

Absolutely untrue. Clinton worked her way across Alaska the summer after college, washing dishes and sliming salmon in a fish processing cannery. The latter fired her and shut down when she complained about unhealthy conditions.

People think horrible things about Hillary Clinton, but she knows a lot more about everyday people (whoever that is supposed to be) than people give her credit for. She's rich now. So what? She comes from a solid middle class background.

Jim Jones, Bulverde TX   November 8th, 2007 9:02 pm ET

M. Rhys, Bigfork, MT   November 8th, 2007 8:48 pm ET

A little research (it took me 5 minutes), something the media seems afraid to do, will also show that the restaurant verified a tip was left "but may not have been properly distributed".
The fault lies with people at the restaurant that didn't share the tip out fairly with the waitresses doing the work.

wong, syracuse, ny   November 8th, 2007 8:46 pm ET

The CNN is using headlines like the National Enquirer.

The CNN front page ticker headline says Clinton stiffing the waitress by not giving a tip. Then, as the full story shows, the restaurant manager agreed that Clinton did leave a $100 tip for all servers for a $157 lunch for her company.

Therefore, assuming it is still news worthy, a more correct headline should be that "the restaurant manager failed to share Clinton's tip with a restaurant waitress"

Senator Clinton would never knowingly walk out the door and not leave a tip to a hard working waitress who provided her and her staff with a meal. Someone in her campaign apparently forgot, and now you are having a field day over nothing. If this is the best attack you have against her, then she will be the first female President in our country's history. Go Hillary! Ivan, Chicago, Illinois   November 8th, 2007 6:47 pm ET

Maybe one her co-workers forgot to give her her share, or perhaps she owned someone some money and they decided to keep her share. In any case why blame Hillary for a mix up because of the resturant's error. And why is the media also blaming Hillary like she is walking around and personally paying for her meals. The media knows full well that a staffer pays the bills in all the campaigns.

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   November 8th, 2007 6:46 pm ET

Some investigative reporter should check on the story … sounds like a made-up Republican non-story … too pat … then the political comment that this could derail the Clinton campaign … whole thing just seems too pat…

Marty, Sacramento CA   November 8th, 2007 6:46 pm ET

…and how much did the Republican National Committee tip Ms. Esterday for her testimony?

Haryy Moyer, Des Moines, Iowa   November 8th, 2007 6:46 pm ET

I'm sorry; after the last debate it is my opinion that Hillary is one of the most disengenuious people in the Democratic field. And as much I think her husband was the best President of the 2nd half of the 20th Century, I took serious offence to his "swift boating" analogy. I worked for Senator Kerry in 2004, and in no way, shape, or form was this a "swift boat" style attack. I will not vote for any candidate that just can't answer a question.

Steve, Newport Beach, CA   November 8th, 2007 6:45 pm ET

Voice of an Independent: The Republicans are Hoping and Praying for Hillary to win the Dem. Nom.
She is the one person the Reps. feel certain of defeating.
Post Election: the Dems. will once again, be dazed and confused, what happened?? We Lost AGAIN!
This time, no hanging chads to whine about, no excuses, no conspiracy theories, no matter how well conceived and manufactured.

B.H., Carlsbad, CA   November 8th, 2007 6:41 pm ET

First of all, doesn't CNN have more important news to print then whether Hillary Clinton tips or not? Second, why would people think that any politician up on a big hill, dressed in a designer suit, riding around in an SUV, surrounded by an entourage and press really understand "at all what I was I was saying?"

Evie, TS Florida   November 8th, 2007 6:39 pm ET

This article is almost 50 minutes old … LOL!!! Is CNN the new Fox?

Fair and balanced? Yeah … let me moderate that ;-)

Jim G, San Diego, CA   November 8th, 2007 6:39 pm ET

What a joke!! Even in 2000 the millionaire Clinton showed how cheap she was by sending the waitress a $100 SAVINGS BOND!!!

Lets see….that only cost her $50 to buy it….but she gets to state to media that it was a $100 bond. The only part she forgets to tell the media is that the waitress now has to only wait SEVENTEEN YEARS for her bond to mature and get her $100 tip…….DUH!!!!

According to USA Today, June 2007, the Clintons have between $10 Million and $50 Million in the bank alone….not counting other assets!!!

What a cheap _ _ _ _ _ (rhymes with witch)!
(thank you New York Times)

john williams san diego, ca.   November 8th, 2007 6:38 pm ET

Ms. pure evil has better things to worry about then tipping a mere waitress, and it is POWER,ADULATION and keeping Bubba celibate

DB GA   November 8th, 2007 6:37 pm ET

Only goes to prove the Clinton's are for show and out for themselves. They have no clue how the working class actually live

Hussein Osama, chicago, IL   November 8th, 2007 6:36 pm ET

Which is more credible and worse:

a) John Edwards used his raised campaign funds to pay for his $400 haircut? OR

b) Hillary did not use her raised campaign funds to tip the waitress?

Jordan, Seattle WA   November 8th, 2007 6:35 pm ET

You know, I'm wondering if the people who normally write newsworthy stories for the political RSS feed are taking part in the WGA strike.

Because frankly, the stories posted today are as painful to read as most reality tv is to watch.

truebob hollywood FL   November 8th, 2007 6:34 pm ET

This crap won't affect my vote. Please spare me the comments bashing Ms. Clinton, since most of the people who bother to post here are also wasting my time. My vote, along with that of most people I know, will be cast for the person I feel will be able to undo the horrific damage that has been done to our national identity by President Bush. Right now that person is Hillary Clinton.

James, Phoenix AZ   November 8th, 2007 6:33 pm ET

No worries, Bill will be out in shortly to scold the waitress for swiftboating Hillary.

Again - just another example of her selfish concern. Wants to USE the woman's story for political points but doesn't care or not if the poor gal gets a tip.

Robert Wiese - Palm Springs, CA   November 8th, 2007 6:33 pm ET

It sounds like another sleezy tactic of the Republican party to discredit a woman who is an obvious threat to their incompentent administration.

Ray Morales, Daly City, California   November 8th, 2007 6:33 pm ET

Hillary couldn't give a tip? Maybe she doesn't get enough funding from corporate America that also enslave the working class.

ABC   November 8th, 2007 6:33 pm ET

Hillary - All Lip, No Tip! They would have actually had to use their own money, and not someone else's, which is a hard concept for Duhmocrats to grasp. The talk shows were saying their campaign called her a liar. Can you believe that? Nuthin' like showing how they really feel about the working class people. Don't mess with the Clintonistas!

Harry Fisher, L.A., CA   November 8th, 2007 6:32 pm ET

Thw swift-boating has started, so much is obvious. This idiotic story, and that of Obama who supposedly didn't put his hand over his heart for the pledge of allegiance, are typical Republican panderings to their base of idiots.

JB Boston MA   November 8th, 2007 6:31 pm ET

CNN should know better. . .

Never use the following words in a sentence. . . .Stiff. . . . Waitress. . . and Clinton

brandi laurinda, ny   November 8th, 2007 6:28 pm ET

anonther non-story , of course they left a tip ! eveyone leaves a tip dont they?

Bill Laurence, Olean, NY   November 8th, 2007 6:27 pm ET

I wish I had enough money to leave a $100.00 tip! C'Mon Hillary you're about as in touch with the working stiffs of America as your husband is with telling the truth under oath.

A. Harrison, Atlanta Georgia   November 8th, 2007 6:27 pm ET

My goodness….if this is even speculated ….Big fat rat written all over this…it's really getting nasty in the last 7 weeks….

Rodney Dallas TX   November 8th, 2007 6:26 pm ET

I'm quite certain that Clinton wasn't the one paying the bill either. She was probably unaware that no tip was left.

kendall, Los Angeles   November 8th, 2007 6:19 pm ET

Before she heads out for a day campaigning/visiting restaurants -Hillary's people needs to stock her w/$20s for decent tips -can give personally.

Unbelievable.

.

Steve, Cincinnati, Ohio   November 8th, 2007 6:19 pm ET

This is typical of an elitist attitude toward the working class. Hillary is absolutely clueless. I think women need to see this in her character. Is this the type of person you would want in the White House. I think not!

Steve, River Forest, IL   November 8th, 2007 6:18 pm ET

Why must I click on a link to discover that, no, the Clinton campaign did NOT stiff the servers. When read at first blush - and in conjuction with the headline - you certainly imply guilt on the part of Hillary. Or are you just trying to keep her media-created "rough last weeks" rolling?

Pete, T.S. FL   November 8th, 2007 6:18 pm ET

It's getting ugly out there. I am sure none of the candidates actually pay the tab, staffers do. On the other hand, how was the service?

My dad once left a penny, as he walked out the waitress holding the penny way up in the air asked “you want change mister?” My dad was embarrassed and that waitress still provides bad service today. My point? Depends of which side of the counter you’re on.

CNN SUCKS NY   November 8th, 2007 6:16 pm ET

is there some reason that CNN won't allow comments on any of Hillary's stories?????

Sean, Detroit, MI   November 8th, 2007 6:14 pm ET

ps. apologies, i meant to cut off the italics after "day." in my last post

Daniel   November 8th, 2007 6:14 pm ET

Hillary did the right thing. I can't believe we would give this poor lady any attention. She is obviously trying get attention, and it's working. Take care of your kids and get back to work!

Gorbashov, Long Beach, Ca.   November 8th, 2007 6:14 pm ET

I heard the interview on the radio this morning, and this story is alot more negative than the interview. She is still considering whether to vote for Hillary or Obama.

Edwards in 2008.

Antonio, Tempe AZ   November 8th, 2007 6:13 pm ET

So Clinton's staffers left a 63% tip which the other waitstaff didn't share with Esterday and the headline is 'Clinton charged with stiffing waitress'.

Thank you CNN for bringing us the kind of important information that allow us, as citizens, to make sound decisions on national policy.

Ron, TX   November 8th, 2007 6:12 pm ET

$100 tip for a $157 meal? Sounds to me like the Clintons are trying to BUY that vote…

Sunny, San Diego, CA.   November 8th, 2007 6:11 pm ET

You'd think that the waitress would have at least asked the manager if her party left a tip before going on national radio and whining about it. Also, what was there to not understand about a single mother's plight? Of course it's difficult. I'm not sure why she was yakking to Hillary about her plight in the first place unless she was asked about it. If I got to meet with a presidential candidate, I wouldn't be complaining about my personal problems. It's not like her hardships as a single mother were brought on by the state of the nation or anything that a president could change.

Colin742   November 8th, 2007 6:10 pm ET

Another phony story. I doubt if Hillary carries cash and personally pays any bill. Maybe someone on her staff forgot to pay the bill or add a tip. Hillary did not personally"stiff" anyone. I remember a month or so ago Bill gave $100 bill for a couple of icecream cones.

Brandie Ragin Tampa, FL   November 8th, 2007 6:10 pm ET

I'm an Obama supporter, but I can honestly say, SHE PROBABLY JUST FORGOT!!!! Hillary was probably configuring in her mind how she can help this woman & women like her.

These candidates are ALWAYS GOING!!!

Unfortunately, forgetting to leave a tip has left writers, once again, reaching for stories to pull democratic candidates down.

Wendy   November 8th, 2007 6:08 pm ET

This is no story. Of course when someone campaigns, the aides or staff memers take care of the payment and tip.
Why do you dig this no story? Everyone knows CNN has bias.

Mike, Panama City, FL   November 8th, 2007 6:03 pm ET

This is not hillary's fault , they left the tip so , its the people at the restaurant that should have divided the tip.

Why is this even news , it is so lame
VERIFY YOU'RE STORIES BEFORE YOU POST SOMETHING

AND THE TITLE IS VERY MISLEADING

somebody needs to get fired at cnn for this !

PETHATIC

Mark, Harrisburg, PA   November 8th, 2007 6:02 pm ET

Not suprised. People who have never worked at a Restaurant and have never had to depend upon a tip for their financial well-being, typically do not give good tips. I doubt Hillary has ever worked a blue collar wage an hour job in her life. I'm sure her husband would have left a tip.
I'd vote for Bill again, but never Hillary.

Dan, Saint Louis, MO   November 8th, 2007 6:02 pm ET

Looks like Hillary has been doing a lot of eating, but not a lot of tipping lately.

Evie, TS Florida   November 8th, 2007 6:01 pm ET

Another PS - Tips are better left in cash but sometimes having a receipt showing the tip is best …

KEITH JAMES LOUTTIT   November 8th, 2007 5:59 pm ET

Gee, is anyone really surprised at this?

I'm sure she will stiff the public if she gets elected the same way.

mountain man   November 8th, 2007 5:58 pm ET

just another fake attempt to smear Hillary.

Adam, Tampa FL   November 8th, 2007 5:58 pm ET

WHO CARES?!?!? Why is this important? Report news, not gossip. Is this still CNN?
