"Silent majority"? I don't think so. Bush's opposition has been most vocal primarily due to a sympathic press.

Hmm ... maybe the press should be sympathetic to the 26-percenters that still can't find their heads without the help of a proctologist or a barium enema?

Whether you support this war, or not, premature withdrawal from Iraq will ultimately result in our return to face a larger threat. Like it or not, that's the reality.

It is time for the silent majority to be heard

IMPEACH CHENEY

DO YOU HEAR US NOW?

Indeed, some House members not associated with Kucinich’s resolution are now openly calling for immediate hearings into Cheney’s impeachable actions—specifically lying the country into a war in Iraq, and threatening war with Iran.
One indication of the change in the political climate in the House is the announcement by Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL), a six-term congressman and a member of the House Judiciary Committee, that he will call for the Judiciary Committee to take up Kucinich’s impeachment bill. This is significant because Wexler, no left-wing hothead, is not a co-signer of the Kucinich bill.
In an email message to constituents, Wexler said:
"I share your belief that Vice President Cheney must answer for his deceptive actions in office, particularly with regard to the preparations for the Iraq war and the revelation of the identity of covert agent Valerie Plame Wilson as part of political retribution against her husband."
"...Cheney and the bush Administration have demonstrated a consistent pattern of abusing the law and misleading Congress and the American people. We see the consequences of these actions abroad in Iraq and at home through the violations of our civil liberties. The American people are served will with a legitimate and thorough impeachment inquiry. I will urge the Judiciary Committee to schedule impeachment hearings immediately and not let this issue languish as it has over the last six months. Only through hearings can we begin to correct the abuses of Dick Cheney and the bush administration; and if it is determined in these hearings that Vice President Cheney has committed High Crimes and Misdemeanors, he should be impeached and removed from office. It is time for Congress to expose the multitude of misdeeds of the Administration and I am hopeful that the Judiciary Committee will expeditiously begin an investigation of this matter."
Also calling for prompt action by the Judiciary Committee in the wake of the Tuesday House vote was Carol Shea-Porter, a first-term Democrat from New Hampshire, who also is not a sponsor of the Kucinich measure. In explaining her vote to send the Kucinich bill to the Judiciary Committee, she said:
"It is the duty of the Vice President to faithfully execute the laws of the United States of America and to defend the Constitution. There is growing evidence that the Executive Branch has ignored some of our laws and has attempted to bend the Constitution to its will. Members of both parties decided that this issue is too important to ignore. I voted with my Republican and Democratic colleagues to investigate the Vice President’s actions in office."
She characterized the resolution sending the bill to the Judiciary Committee a "strongly bi-partisan vote."
With these kinds of endorsements and calls for action, it is clear both that Speaker Pelosi is looking increasingly pathetic and out of touch with her "impeachment is off the table" mantra, and also that Judiciary Chair John Conyers (D-MI), who seems to have been intimidated by the Speaker for the past year, but who earlier had been a leader in exposing the crimes of the Bush/Cheney administration, is getting strong support for taking a bolder stand.
Stephen Cohen (D-TN), a member of the Judiciary Committee who is a co-sponsor of the Kucinich resolution, says he thinks that there will be an impeachment hearing in the committee.

C'mon guys ... why so negative?

We're "liberating" those Iraqi's (who havent fled the country in the millions) ... from their limbs and heads! At least they're not being forced to wear Burka's right? Where’s your patriotism?

So what if weapons inspectors told Dubya that the places he was citing as having WMDs ("we know exactly where they are") were searched and CAME UP CLEAN! Chalabi and Curveball said otherwise! Are you saying that believing Curveball (a guy who was summarily dismissed by every intelligence agent with a brain in his head) was wrong? Are you implying that the $27 million of taxpeyers' money we paid to Chalabi (and guy who still has a jail cell waiting for him in Jordan for almost single-handedly bankrupting that country) was a waste?

Do you mean that heresay from past administrations on what Saddam had and the bullcrap from Chalabi and Curveball was somehow LESS reliable than the IAEA and the results of real-time searches by weapons inspectors indicating Saddam had nothing? How un-American of you!

So we invaded anyway - to set up a secular, American-made, puppet government, at gunpoint, that Iraqi's historically tribal-minded citizens never asked for, aligned with Israel of all things, to be America's new proxy in the region while it's trying to privatize their oil. Why would they have a problem with that?

So what if we're the same foreign government that bombed their entire infrastructure (sewage, water systems etc) to bits, let their anti-Saddam uprising get slaughtered by Saddam after it abandoned them in 1991, and approved sanctions that killed a million Iraqi children?

They should be thankful we created the power vacuume that's resulted in all the carnage there! It's not like OUR SOLDIERS are dying in the same numbers as their civilian population - those dead Iraqi's are just "unavoidable collateral damage". Right?

Who cares if we can't beat two third-world countries with 1/000th the military we have after FIVE years of trying. Dubya (the guy who already got busted before for lying about us "absolutely" winning in Iraq when his Sec of Defense admitted we WEREN'T) just said we were "kicking ass"! And even though our latest “yes man”/general Petraeus is saying the same things that the top general (Ricardo S. Sanchez) said on 12/07/03, we can believe THIS guy! Right?

So what if the troop surge that was done specifically to help Iraqis meet their benchmarks so we can come home ISN’T helping them meet those benchmarks. It’s STILL “working”! Right?

C’mon … forget critical thinking and common sense you traitorous bastards!

BE PATRIOTIC!

It’s worked so far …

Just in case if someone forgets:

1. Saddam has nothing to do with 911, and most hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, our main ally in the region.
2. Saddam was our puppet and is regime was armed and financed by the CIA. It shouldn't be too hard for you to find the photo where Saddam shakes hand with Rumsfeld.
3. No WMD has ever been found. If there's any, it probably was supplied by the US sometime in the past.
4. More Americans were killed in Iraq than during 911. Over 500,000 Iraqis have been killed and over 2 millions have left the country.
5. The war is funded by your tax dollar, and borrowing from China, the country that DOES have nukes.

George Bush says:"If you lived in Iraq and had lived under a tyranny, you'd be saying, 'God, I love freedom,' because that's what's happened," he said. "And there are killers and radicals and murderers who kill the innocent to stop the advance of freedom. But freedom's happening in Iraq. And we're making progress."

The utter destruction of the country of Iraq and the continuing "Civil War" will result in this country being exactly what we want the least - "A Fundamentalists Islamic Country" hating America and eventually throwing us out and depriving us of the oil that we are now spending a Trillion Dollars trying to get!

President Jimmy Carter had it right back in 1973 - we needed then to have a sustained policy to ensure energy independence from foreign suppliers. President Carter shifted the Department of Energy from Nuclear Weapon Development to Energy Research and Development. As soon as Ronald Reagan took office, those R&D efforts were almost completely stopped. The country went on a binge of rebuilding "battleships" and developing new weapon systems putting our nation into debt.

The current resident of the White House wants the private sector to develop our own energy resources!

Yes there are ~ 30% of people still supporting this effort. Most are living in areas where pork barrel defense spending is making their lives better, the rest are "uninformed" at best!

Wake up America - if we don't put our country to work fixing our own problems who do you think will? Wake up America and throw the "Greedy Old Party" out of office. It is going to take 10 - 20 years to get a fix on these problems but, if you keep electing the GOP, you only hasten the trip to the "bread line".

WE cannot afford to continue King Georges adventures!

To Bob from Seattle:

Writing a silly love letter to The Decider is a waste of your time. You should know by now, The Decider doesn't read, so save your sentimentality for your diary and keep it safely locked away. You don't want to embarrass yourself, now do you?

Still, your poetic prose has inspired me, so here goes: my shot at silliness.

The Decider: A Haiku

George W. Bush
A cowboy Caligula
Bad man? Mad man? Both!

Dedicated to those in the know...

Peace.

This moron from San Diego must be only watching Fox and listening Rush.
The cumulitive death toll (857 to be exact) of american soldiers in 2007 is highest than any year since war has started, and Bush declared that the "Combat operations are over". And no one counts on the Iraqi death toll. These war mongerers don't seem to care the human values outside US. And Mitch Maccano the Senate minority leader has nerve to declare that the war is winding down. As if he is doing favor to american people. Shameless creatures!

Only 68 percent? I would have thought it to be much higher. Of course we are opposed to Bush's war of terror in Iraq. We never should have undertaken such foolery in the first place. We knew it and so did people in the White House. But Bush did not listen to wise counsel. Instead he followed the wishes of the demented neo-cons.

More American troops were killed this past month than in any other month in the entire war. That's progress to our idiot president!
Bush should be hung as a war criminal, right after he is executed as a traitor for using our freedom and our Constitution for toilet paper! We couldn't carry out enough death sentences to cover his hideous crimes in office and globally.Too bad that it is against the law, because everyone else but Bush and his criminal regime, obey our laws and respect our constitution and chersh our freedoms.Everyone, except the criminally deranged like Bush!
One more year to go,if he doesn't destroy us all before then. It's been 7 years too long already!

Jeff,
That is a flat out lie, you moron. Deaths last month were at its lowest level in a year in a half. Please be educated on the facts before you run your mouth and look like an even bigger idiot than you already appear.

American people please do your homework, the tide has turned in IRAQ we are winning. I know the Democrats want to throw victory into the jaws of defeat, but too much blood and treasure has been lost to stop now. Everybody wishes the troops could come home today but it is not realistic, and why would we quit why we are winning? The american public surely can not be this ignorant? CAN THEY?

To CNB of WA:

With due respect to your service to this country, I don't agree to your argument:
1. Congress was blackmailed to force their vote on fabricated lies. If Bush had pulled out immediately after the removal of Saddam, those who voted against this war could have been labelled as traitors by this administration
2. Saddam was never threat to US, nor he attacked us, had no connection to Al-Quida. He was just like any dictator who ruled his country and kept everyone in check. There were several other dictators, why did we not attack those countries (Answer-no oil!)
3. During Saddam's regime with sanctions in place, the country was in peace. Now there are 1000 Saddams and death toll is 1000 times than during Saddam
4. American style democracy can't be forced to other countries. Iraq needs some stick to control different tribes.
5. Al-quida never existed in Iraq during Saddam and now its the breeding ground
6. Lastly, Iraqi people still see us as occupiers and majority of them hate us.
7. Look at the cost of the war (human lives and money). The same money can be spent on our own people. We deny our poor children 35billion for 6 years whereas spend 8 billion a month.

Where is the logic?

CNB: The argument you presented about evil regimes, genocide, and terrorism in Iraq apply with just as much certainty in a number of other repressive countries in the world such as Cuba, North Korea, China, Somalia, and others. Who is defending the rights of those people? Why out of all these countries did we invade only Iraq? Did we like the Iraqis better than the Chinese, the Cubans, the Koreans, or the Somalians, or was it because of something else-like oil or revenge for a laughably botched assasination plot against Bush '41?

Granted, Saddam Hussein was an evil dictator but every soldier I've ever talked to who has been to Iraq has told me that invading the country and toppling Saddam de-stabilized it. I guess that-along with a coherent and cohesive exit strategy-is something the Bush administration and the neocons neglected to plan for. Now our young men and women are paying the price for their incompetence and arrogance.

Does the president realize that the financial cost as well as the loss in lives are not worth what he considers to be gains in Iraq. If he continues to spent money in the fashion he is doing that he will bring down the economy. Does he even realize the correlation between the value of the US Dollar and his borrowing rate. I really think he is clueless ( Maybe he does not care). One of the prerequisites to be president should be intelligence which he appears to lack. At least a little common sense would be expected. However, he has neither. We can not afford to fight this war in Iraq at the current cost whether you consider the lives lost and/or financial resources consumed. I wish he would just wake up.

My roommate is an Iraqi Kurd, so I asked him what do he and his family think of the war. They are very much in support of the war. They had to deal with the evil that was Saddaam Hussien. They know things wern't going well at first but they are STILL GLAD WE WENT INTO IRAQ. They know that ten years from now Iraq will be a democracy and an ally in the middle of the middle-east. Violence and death in Iraq is way down yet this doesn't get discussed. I support this war now more than ever. Let's finish the job, fix the government, and get out.

This war was in the "can" waiting to be launched before Shrub was elected. 9/11 was a convenient pretext and the perpetrators ARE STILL ON THE LOOSE SIX YEARS LATER. All you brave guys and gals who think this is such a great adventure, who think lying through your teeth to get an ignorant population and Congress to go along with you is "OK", then get off your comfort zones and go there. Too old? Send your kids. Want to do something for the troops? Vote the clowns out of office who put them into this mess and who deny them proper healthcare when they come home. Oh, sorry, that would be the liberal thing to do.

America is so terrified of this minority of "terrowists" (as Guiliani calls them) when it has the most powerful arsenal of weapons on the planet and the most pervasive and powerful intelligence network in the world. Yet America is oblivious to the destruction that is happening domestically to it's economy and it's civil liberties.

This poll shows the massive divide between the people and the government that exists today. We don't want pointless wars. We all know Iraq was a sham, a war for corporate interests. Why are our leaders so intimately connected to the same corporations that are profiting from Iraq while the American people fit the bill.

We also know that the "terrowist" angle is used over and over again to terrorize the public. Just last week we learned about Rumsfeld's snowflake memos, proof positive that the government (colluding with the media) manipulates the population using an endless war on terror! It's absolutely ridiculous and the American people need to grow up and understand that they've killed close to 4,000 patriotic US soldiers and 650,000 innocent Iraqis for scum like Bush, Cheney and the CFR.

"i've seen those progress not through the media or someone else, but through MY eyes"

You need to remember something sir. You are dealing with the left here, it doesnt matter how much more qualified you are to answer a particular question, they will always be right, and they always no what is best for everyone else. Keep up the good work, most of us will be cheering and praying for you.

Matt in Chicago:

Truly, you must be an imbecile. It was the "greatest generation" that got us embroiled in Vietnam. It was the baby boomers that both fought and opposed that war.

Each ensuing generation is faced with national challenges. Sadly, people such as yourself believe in some idealistic and naive view of the world that asks "why can't we all just get along?" Much of mankind is fundamentally flawed and history has proven this since the advent of civilization. It's not generational, my friend.

I am confused here. I thought the soldiers were fighting over there to protect our freedoms over here. Yet, the fighting soldier on this thread has told all of us in the majority who see through the lies and want to end the war to "SHUT UP".

I hate to have to tell you this, my friend, but we-in the majority-are American citizens, too, and we have the freedom of speech. So, we do not have to shut up, sir, and I, for one, will never stop fighting for what I think is right.

I love my country too much to "SHUT UP".

This war is wrong and if it weren't, W and The Dick would not have had to lie about it for four years now to sway public opinion. I hope the warmongers are impeached and that we, the people, learn from our monumental mistakes and elect wise people to high office from here on out.

War is over and peace is possible because love conquers all.

No one hates this war more than I do as I consider every war an expression of failure. But it is rather simplistic to say, "Stop the war and bring our troops home' We are so deeply entrenched in Iraq that it's going to take long term planning to do so but the sooner we start the soooner it will end. HOPEFULLY!

Gavin in Gainsville says: The polls that we should really question are the current Presidential electon polls. Those "scientific polls" have basically given the US populace a choice between a socialist and a fascist both who will continue this war and more empirical conquest.

Polls are an effective way to sway opinion of the masses with an Opinion of a small minority.

Yep, Gavin...you should be within Bush's administration...we don't want any of that scientific nonsense swaying the opinions of the American people. Let's just BS them into the dark ages. Are you a poli-sci major...if you are you need to pull out the dusty books buster because you're not the real world.

While we're talking about vetoes (the water bill which was just vetoed by the senate) lets look at the fact that 68% of Americans disagree with the Iraq war. If we live in a true democratic society in which we have the technology to take everyone's vote, and we have over 2/3 of the nation against the war, why can't we end it? Why do we have to be lead down this horrific road by a horrific President? The Congress and Senate need to focus on impeaching the President.

Okay CNN we get it! Enough with these polls! When the Iraq war was launched two-thirds of Americans polled thought it was a good idea. Now that statistic has changed 180 degrees. I was one of Americans who thought war with Iraq was a bad idea from the beginning along with Obama and Kucinich. America winning a war was never a question for me. Our military is mightiest on the planet, but nation building across the ocean is where the problem lies. You have to be from another planet to believe the Iraq war was a good idea. So now what do we do? Exit out in 6 to 24 months, regardless if the security situation there improves or just sacrifice our tax money for improving conditions here at home and plan to be in Iraq for 10 more years?

READING these comments is interesting as I am a veteran of this very war you all are discussing. What I find interesting is that the majority of you appear to be against something you don't even understand. I understand you feel duped, betrayed, or whatever from how this war began, and I can understand that. What I do not understand is this belief that we should just abandon Iraq as-is. How can you honestly feel as an American that we have no responsibility whatsoever to those people. Feelings towards Bush notwithstanding, we invaded a country, with the blessings of congress and the popular support of the American people we eliminated a regime that held power through fear and murder. Whether or not the basis for this war was lies, it's done. I for one having been there feel obligated to these people, I've seen the tragic state that country is in. Not only did those people endure 30 years of hell from an evil regime but they've had to endure the war, and the consequential high jacking of their country by foreign terrorists. The war gave evil a battleground and it's in their very backyard. I've seen women crying over the loss of their children, homeless in the hundreds fleeing the warzone. I fully believe that if what you guys suggest we should do were to happen, and we simply pulled out of Iraq at this point. We would be witnessing the most violent and bloodthirsty Genocide of our generation and we would be the cause. Our soldiers may be the only people in the world defending the rights of those people, and I, having been one and now a civilian, support them and support continuing our efforts to stabilize Iraq. For those of you who seem content with watching Iraq's people die in the streets on CNN, I ask you to check your heart, see if it's gone completely cold.

BoB of Seattle,
Your rational is just as pathetic as Bush's. You see the Arabs as warring, tyrannical people. If you knew your history , you would realize the lunacy of such statements. The Islamic and European countries have similarly been engaged in warfare throughout their histories. Also the majority of conflicts in the region since 1917 have been a result of British and French mandates and the carving of boundaries. Europeans are no different than Arabs.

You tell them Mr. President. I have done several tours in Iraq and i have seen a lof of progress…i've seen those progress not through the media or someone else, but through MY eyes. Let's keep going foward and fighting the terrorist's and accomplishing our mission in Iraq.
For all of you civilians: all you do is criticize the war, yet, your not the one in harms way…please stop with your derogatory comments, all it does it brings down the moral to our service members who are fighting this war.
Is really funny that the ones who are against this war are the ones who have never served a day in their life.
To all the anti-war critics: PLEASE SHUT UP AND LET US DO OUR JOB IN IRAQ.

Thank you.

To TSgt, FL: Learn how to spell and punctuate properly, then enroll in a refresher course on American government and the Constitution. Pay particular attention to that part about the First Amendment and freedom of speech. That seems to be something that you, for all your sanctimony, seem to have forgotten about.

Although I thank you for your service, that does not make your opinion any better than anyone else's on this forum. Moreover, I am a retired military officer and I have a number of friends who either have done tours or are doing tours in Iraq, and many of them DO NOT believe that any progress has been made there. Most of them have had their morale (not moral) brought down by the Bush administration and its insincerity toward the troops. What happened to the body armor and the armor plated vehicles that the commanders asked for but didn't get? What happened at Walter Reed with our servicemembers getting substandard medical care in ghetto-like conditions? And finally, why has the Bush administration consistently CUT funding for Veterans Administration programs since he came into office?

The fact that you serve doesn't make your opinion any better than anyone else's, nor does it make you correct. You don't have to have served to have an opinion, and criticism of this war is not unAmerican or unpatriotic. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

CNN keeps popping up the same old tired article that War opposition is at an all time high. I saw three polls a couple a weeks ago that would disagree w/ this CNN poll. Hmmm.

You mean even more than 68 percent opposed the war a couple weeks ago? How exactly does that prove your point?

Just remember people it's "we the people" all we have to do is keep doing what we are doing and teaching OUR kids to do the same, always in the past we have come through. Just keep doing what you are doing and just remember that there is usually a renaissance after the dark

Well DUH! When neither the Iraqi government nor its people are willing to lift a finger, although they do hold out their hand to take more of our money, what would you expect Americans to think?

Don't know how old you are Matt, but you are forgetting about Vietnam and many other things. But then perhaps, you're so young you don't know about that war.
Many boomers are not and have never been for the GOP - have you ever heard of JFK??
Lumping all boomers the way you have, only leads me to believe that you are too young to know the difference. It's like the pot calling the kettle black.
There are many young people today who are just as bad; they are in debt up to their ears; they think everyone owes them a living without having to work for it; and their opinion, is the only opinion.
Maybe you need to think a bit before you spout off!
