Mike Huckabee's wife once did some target practice with a grenade launcher.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) — During an afternoon tea party at the elegant governor's mansion in the capital of South Carolina, former Arkansas first lady Janet Huckabee told CNN she is pretty handy with a grenade launcher.

Huckabee, the wife of Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, said in an interview that she once shot a grenade launcher at a National Guard training camp in Arkansas.

"I have fired a grenade launcher and hit the target two out of three times, so I think that's pretty good odds for me," she said, noting that she had a special interest in military matters and has also jumped out of an airplane, flown in an F-16 and shot an MP5 submachine gun.

"I just was at the National Guard training camp at Camp Robinson and they just said we just want to, you know, introduce you to some of the equipment and some of the military guns that they have. And so one of them happened to be a grenade launcher, and so I shot it, and they said, 'You're good.' And I said, 'Thank you.'"

The tea party was just one stop on a South Carolina "First Ladies Bus Tour" for Mike Huckabee. Along with Janet Huckabee, the bus tour included two former South Carolina first ladies who are supporting Huckabee, Iris Campbell and Mary Wood Beasley, as well as former Arkansas first lady Gay White.

Maybe she can be enlisted to take out Osama bid
Laden. No one else has been able to. Or maybe
Cheney. He's pretty good with a rifle.

Grenade-launching wife… Chuck Norris heading up fundraising… I only wish Mike Huckabee could convince Ah-nold to get on board.

Vee vill crush you girly-men, roundhouse kick your face, and grenade-launch until you vote for Huck!

After Sunday morning services, of course.

Wow, that's a little tougher than Mitt Romney, the big bad hunter who "hunted pretty much his entire life" (as Mitt related in order to pander to the republican whacko gun nuts, the NRA etc).
Turns out Mitt helped hunt a few squirrel and varmints one day when he was a teenager of 15 or 16, and then someone else invited him last year so that was "pretty much" his whole life.
It's funny to watch these republicans being real tough with guns, but none of them are as "tuff" as Rudy Guiliani, who single-handedly withstood the 9-11 attacks merely by appearing in front of every available camera in the days after the WTC collapsed.

Mrs. Doubtfire   November 14th, 2007 8:40 pm ET

Will she take this hobby to the White House Lawn if she does become first lady? That would get some press.

I'm a bit mystified as to why they would feel they need this training.

Phil, Lynden, WA   November 14th, 2007 11:14 pm ET

This, and the Chuck Norris endorsement article, have been the only Huckabee-related posts to this blog in recent weeks. It is disappointing to see a major news network such as CNN, virtually dismiss a legitimate (and surging) candidacy such as Mike Huckabee's. This rising star in the '08 field (now placing 3rd or 4th in many nationwide polls) all too often ends up relegated to the ranks of backwoods hick or ranting, pie-in-the-sky religious lunatic.

It is a travesty to see the media powers assuming they have the power to define the course of the election, all in the name of shaping the best story.

Glad to hear our tax money is hard at work.

She is especially interested in military matters ? So, yet another warmonger who could care less about the validity or justification of war, just that she gets to blow things up.
YEEE HAW.

Don't you think, if you had any bit of sense, that during a peroid of unpopular and highly expensive military actions you'd have the common sense to not make yourself look like your from the same mindset of people who got us into this mess and spent 2 TRILLION dollars to accomplish nothing of value to the US.

No, instead lets justify wasteful military spend by talking the fun of civilians blowing things up.

Sounds like fun, can I blow things up also. How about we start with some of those SUV's lining the streets and driving up the price of gas.

Am I stupid or is everyone else ?

Just what we need from a first lady. Wow…

What has this world come to when the wife of a pastor is into violence? The pastor is a gun carrying man…

These conservatives, very confusing people. Pro-life until you're born, then they hand you a rifle, or grenade launcher and give you the chance to die for your country and their god.

They talk about banning toy guns, while they're keeping the real ones.

Scott from Freehold   November 15th, 2007 8:29 am ET

How frightening that "This" is running for president.

Frustrated, Charlotte,NC   November 15th, 2007 8:31 am ET

As if we're not wasting enough ammunition on foreign soil, not to mention the risks involved with a civilian using military equipment… Nice… Anything the US Government can do to appease bored housewives, please–let's get on it. Better still, make a tour of it, and then trivialize it. What a classy bunch.

Lee, Arlington VA   November 15th, 2007 8:35 am ET

First Chuck Norris will give you a roundhouse kick to the head if you don't vote for Huckabee, and now his wife will blow you away in case you still don't vote for the good preacher. I love democracy!

Kevin, Cleveland, Ohio   November 15th, 2007 9:38 am ET

Can you imagine what might happen if it ends up being Huckabee v. Edwards? Isn't it frightening to think of two level-headed candidates who speak well about issues important to them and connect with voters without blasting into one another's personal lives at every possible chance? It could never happen in this country, could it?

james, buda, tx   November 15th, 2007 9:44 am ET

Mike, Jacksonville, FL   November 15th, 2007 10:11 am ET

And this is news why? Who cares? Or did CNN just put this out there so that all the "watchdogs" could have another nonsensical point to complain about? Does this have *any* impact on the issues surrounding this election?

And for Greg from NY, NY; Conservatives don't talk about banning toy guns. Not sure where you going with that. But on that note, if guns kill people, why are there never any mass killings at shooting ranges?

Andrew, Decatur IL   November 15th, 2007 10:11 am ET

spraynardkruger :

with that logic, you, me and everyone else should go to Iraq, because if you can type your message you can probably shoot a gun. Thankfully people have a choice to enlist or not, also are people really upset about her doing this, if so it doesnt take much to ruffle your feathers does it?

p-brain, Bucyrus, OH   November 15th, 2007 10:56 am ET

Tea parties and a First Ladies Bus Tour…How nice for the "little woman."

Have I just entered a time warp, and it's 1908?

C,.Kl Justus sc   November 15th, 2007 10:56 am ET

That is very conceivable that she could hit the target on Governor's day at the camp.
I was in the guards and on Governor's day the distance to the targets are always shortened and the targets have floor bags in the back for the small arms fire so when they are hit you see a white flash of floor escaping from the bag.
I also shot the grenade exhibition for the governor and they told us to pull in the targets, but I shamed my partner into putting the targets to the right distance so we were the only ones who was shooting at the required distance for the ammunition being used except the 106 mm recoilless rifle which also was shooting the required distance.
If you are watching the exhibition on governors day it is a fraud or at least it was when I was in the national guard in the 1950's and early 1960's. I doubt it has changed, it is eye wash for the governor and his cohorts.

Matt Nashville, TN   November 15th, 2007 11:00 am ET

People,People,People lets not underestimate the importance of this our leader is handy with a gernade launcher. So, if we go to war we can send him out there to fight with our boys in the army and he doesn't have an excuse. Hahaha what a joke.

LOL… are most of you dems so bitter and tightly wound you can't lighten up?

She went to visit a training camp and they let her pop-off a few rounds. What's the big eff'n deal?

The only thing that would have made the story more enjoyable… is if Code-Pink had been invited too… to catch the grenades.

Greg, NY, NY   November 15th, 2007 1:23 pm ET

Mike, Jacksonville, FL,

That wasn't completely geared at conservatives, it was actually a George Carlin quote. Just wanted to see if it got any reactions.

As for your question about mass shootings at gun ranges. Ask yourself this question. Would you go on a shooting rampage at a GUN RANGE? NOOO! Everyone there has a gun, why would you do that? lol You'd get nowhere pretty quick.

Greg, Liverpool, NY   November 15th, 2007 1:29 pm ET

Why do all Republicans surround themselves with monstrous weapons and suicidal theology? Wait, are we talking about radical Islam or conservative Christian politicians with guns and End Times delusions? I can't remember these days. The only differenc ebetween the two is manufactured political legitimacy.

G Zuss in Bethelhem, The Old Testament is a part of our history as Christians. You DO realize Christianity was borne of Judiasm! (Jesus Christ was a Jew) Here is the game plan: When has God condemned war? I will patiently await your answer. Hopeful this is not the extent of your arguement!

mo,la ca   November 15th, 2007 4:21 pm ET

great, we should elect huckabee, if he launches a war he has no choice but to send his wife into the action. we need good grenade launcherers especially in iraq.
