Richardson has been nominated for a fifth Nobel Peace Prize.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson has something new to tout at Thursday night's Democratic presidential debate - a fifth Nobel Peace Prize nomination.

Rep. Bart Gordon, D-Tennessee, officially nominated the New Mexico governor for the honor on Thursday, praising Richardson for his trips earlier this year to Darfur and North Korea.

"We live in a volatile world, but people like Bill Richardson are reaching out through diplomatic efforts to reduce those tensions," Gordon said in a statement. "He has worked tirelessly during his 22 years of public service, and his efforts this year alone are certainly worthy of this high recognition."

The official nomination was co-signed by 13 members of Congress, including one Republican - Rep. Jim Ramstad of Minnesota.

Richardson, a former ambassador to the United Nations, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace prize four times before, according to his presidential Web site.

In response to the latest nomination, Richardson said in a statement he is "profoundly humbled."

"There are hundreds of dedicated advocates, non-profits, humanitarian organizations, and public servants, who work each day to reduce tension in Korea and try to bring peace to Darfur," Richardson said. "I'm touched to be nominated by a great public servant like Congressman Bart Gordon, and his Republican and Democratic colleagues in Congress."

As the Associated Press notes, Nobel nominees do not necessarily have to meet rigorous standards. Joseph Stalin and and Benito Mussolini both were nominated.

Jon, Sacramento:
Get your facts right. Among your "democrats, terrorists, and hand-picked pacifists" to win the Nobel Peace Prize is also Teddy Roosevelt. But I am sure that was an aberration from the more regular peace-mongering you seem to so despise.

Oh that's right, Hal. Teddy was the recipient of the 7th Nobel Peace Prize ever awarded...back in 1906.

101 years later... never again was a Republican, Pope, or Leader that ACHIEVED peace or PROTECTED peace through military action ever won the prize.

THANKS for the clarification!

" aiming at the democratic party to pull us out of this mess" Jack your brain must be fried from that FL sun, the dems aren't going to solve anything. We get two flavors of the same thing... They created this mess together. RP2008

I also have no problem at all supporting the policies of some Democratic candidates; after all, lifelong Chicagoans bleed "Democratic-machine" blue on the local level even if they're conservative nationally. Therefore, Richardson is one of few Dem Presidents I could stomach because he believes in lowering taxes whenever possible, altho he's into taxing rich people at a higher rate. I don't agree with that because it's really communism, isn't it, to re-distribute the wealth ?

Brian, Syracuse NY   November 16th, 2007 10:01 am ET

He deserves the award more than Gore did, but he probably won't get it because he's not popular enough.

What a dream team it'd be if Richardson and Gore ran together, though!

Daniel,
If you listened to the debate, you heard Gov. Richardson tick off a series of steps he would take to bring peace to the Middle East (Israel-Palestine). No backgroud?? You are mistaken.

Tom Dedham, Mass   November 15th, 2007 9:51 pm ET

I may disagree with Richardson on many issues, but I respect his knowledge and experience that frankly dwarfs Hillary Clinton's and the other Democrats (sans Biden), it is not even close.

Disagree with his policies, but respect the man for his accomplishments, no matter the PARTY.

As a Conservative, I have no problem speaking GOOD about a Democrat who is an honest person who geniunely BELIEVES his words, unlike others who won't be named as that would offend "her".

We who follow politics (or we wouldn't be blogging on here), always complain that there are NO honest and sincere politicians anymore, I disagree, this guy is one.

Congratulations Mr. Richardson.

Jose Card   November 15th, 2007 8:32 pm ET

Governor Richardson is the best Democratic presidential candidate for me. I respect his characters and records in public service. Best of all, I respect his integrity. He spent most of his time and energy working for real people than big corporations.

Governor Richardson also has the best experience in international relations among all Democratic candidates. In addition to this Nobel peace prize nomination, I hope he is the Democratic nominee for 2008.

john williams san diego, ca.   November 15th, 2007 8:13 pm ET

i nominate Bill Richardson for the Neville Chamberlain award for a WEAK SPINE and the Jimmy Carter award for folding under presure...well deserved...

Jayne, Cedar Rapids, IA   November 15th, 2007 7:48 pm ET

Steve in Peoria- Perhaps his getting North Korea to stop their Nuclear program and getting a cease fire in Darfur had a little bit to do with it. Making ignorant comments makes you sound ignorant, you aren't ignorant are you steve?

Walt, Belton, TX   November 15th, 2007 7:43 pm ET

Richardson is a very bad joke as a man, but he's probably smarter and more cunning than Hillary ever imagined.

steve - peoria il   November 15th, 2007 7:34 pm ET

The ONLY reason Richardson got the Peace Prize nomination is that he was connected to the useless, irrelevant and wholly corrupt United Nations. Please, no offense to Gov Richardson.

Vinny C., NYC, NY   November 15th, 2007 7:31 pm ET

I didn't know that anyone could just "nominate" someone for the Nobel Peace Prize. But I guess it figures. I nominate Stephen Colbert!!

As for naming Republicans that have been nominated, although I don't follow the nominations much, I know Rudy Giuliani had once been nominated.

Google it! Rudy Giuliani was nominated by Olle Wastberg, consul general to the United Nations. There was a New York Times story about it.

It was in praise of his anti-crime policies which "spared New York perhaps 10,000 murders, 15,000 rapes and 800,000 robberies. This is clearly a humanitarian accomplishment of great magnitude."

xtina - chicago IL   November 15th, 2007 7:23 pm ET

Thank you Jon in Sacramento for your post informing people that Nobel Org. doesn't include conservatives.

That leads me to conclude that the Nobel organization is interested in furthering only people bent on turning every nation on earth socialist or communist. I was especially sorry to hear that Pope John Paul II was never a recipient.

aj huntington ny   November 15th, 2007 7:19 pm ET

The Nobel organization went down the tubes when Al "I invented the Internets" Gore got the PeacePrize. They just vote in the current liberal poster boy.

And I like how they say "nominees do not necessarily have to meet rigorous standards. " Duh.

Jon, Sacramento ~ Ca   November 15th, 2007 5:44 pm ET

To you Demo-haters, quick name me the last Republican nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize?

Posted By jw, canadian,ok : November 15, 2007 5:13 pm

----–

JW – you win! To my knowledge only democrats, terrorists, and hand-picked pacifists have won the peace prize

Linus Pauling – 1962 (worked against nuclear testing in the US)
Intl Physicians against Nuclear War – 1985
Dalai Lama – 1989
Yasser Arafat – 1994 (Terrorist founder of the PLO)
Kofi Annan – 2001 (not sure for WHAT)
Jimmy Carter – 2002 (building houses)
Intl Atomic Energy Agency – 2005 (working to prevent nuclear energy to be used in military uses)
Al Gore – 2007 (Fooling the world into thinking our existence has SOME impact on global warming... gee, scientist have shown Mars increasing by the same temps as the Earth... martian emissions???)

Now... those EXLUDED from the Nobel Peace Prize:

Popes, Republicans, Recognition of the BILLIONS of aid provided to 3rd world countries from the US, The US Military which removed The Taliban in Afghanistan, The soldiers that removed a brutal dictator (Saddam), etc.

It is a badge of Honor NOT to receive the politicized Peace Prize!!

To you Demo-haters, quick name me the last Republican nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize?

Colin   November 15th, 2007 5:10 pm ET

Governor Richardson is a good man but to be significant the nomination must come from leaders in the international community, particularly China, Japan and ROK, not from US political colleagues

Linda, Albuquerque, New Mexico   November 15th, 2007 4:57 pm ET

I remember that it was Richardson who had talks with Saddam years ago. Maybe he's more "experienced" than you think on the Middle East unlike the current administration...

Howard Hewlett, Des Moines IA   November 15th, 2007 4:48 pm ET

This solidifies the idea the regardless of what happens between Edwards, Obama, and Clinton this man needs to be the VP or Sec. of State!

demwit   November 15th, 2007 4:47 pm ET

I salute you Bill, for bringing peace to North Korea and Darfur. Oh wait..??

Patricia Lopez, Santa Fe, New Mexico   November 15th, 2007 4:45 pm ET

CONGRATULATIONS to RICHARDSON! He's finally getting some credit where it's due. I am a New Mexican and can attest first hand to all that he has done for our state and the U.S. and it sickens us that he doesn't get the press coverage that the front runners get. I guess it just shows how "not in" he is with the big media business.

zatavu   November 15th, 2007 4:36 pm ET

Really? He deserves a Nobel Prize for watching an anti-American propaganda film in North Korea and otherwise letting himself be used by them for their own purposes? Well, why not? If they can give one for propaganda, why not one for watching it, and being gullible enough to be used by another country for it?

Daniel, NY   November 15th, 2007 4:29 pm ET

Richardson has also inched back into double-digits in the latest poll from Iowa.

Alan H. Rindge, New Hampshire   November 15th, 2007 4:19 pm ET

I liked this man from the start but his popularity doesn't seem to be catching on. Even in next door Nevada he is running far behind Clinton and Obama.

George, Los Angeles, California   November 15th, 2007 4:14 pm ET

If Richardson had larger campaign contributions – he would be leading the Dems. I guess more experience and leadership doesn't counter more cash.

Daniel, Earth   November 15th, 2007 4:13 pm ET

An advocate for peace he may be, but a good choice for president? Probably not. He lacks vision and depth of knowledge on the Middle East that the next president must possess. Congratulations on your "Nobel" nomination.

Chris Hassel, Saint Paul, Minnesota   November 15th, 2007 4:10 pm ET

One thing cannot be denied regarding Governor Richardson's political career: he's been an energetic, proactive, pragmatic voice for America on the global stage over a period of time when such voices have been needed badly but are nonetheless all too rare. For decades, he's worked to improve our image in the eyes of our friends and allies around the world, as well as in the eyes of a few potential adversaries. He's a smart guy, a tough negotiator, and a good leader. Thank you, Governor Richardson.

Ella, Syracuse, NY   November 15th, 2007 4:07 pm ET

David B-
I'm sure the hostages whose release he negotiated and the families of the MIA soldiers who finally received their loved ones' remains might argue that it was more than a few hours of handshaking. Oh and those in Darfur, during the 60 day cease fire he negotiated, they too might acknowledge that it was more than a fact finding mission. Maybe, David, you should do a fact finding mission.

Great Job Bill. Happy 60th Birthday!

jean,boston,ma   November 15th, 2007 4:00 pm ET

Really? What a coincidence.....I hope that won't influence voters.

S.D., Long   November 15th, 2007 3:55 pm ET

He will make a great VP candidate.

Wayne, Greenville TX   November 15th, 2007 3:43 pm ET

As the Associated Press notes, Nobel nominees do not necessarily have to meet rigorous standards. Joseph Stalin and and Benito Mussolini both were nominated.

As was Rush Limbaugh. By fellow right-wing wacko Mark Levin, who violated the nomination rules to do so.

That being said, Limbaugh now has something else in common with Stalin and Mussolini......

Not Alemming, Maine   November 15th, 2007 3:41 pm ET

Unfortunately, one of the most qualified, concensus building and arguably smartest men to run for President, and even with another Nobel prize nomination he won't get the press he deserves...

Just juvenile comments by detractors who don't have the intelligence to rationally discuss the issues...

Dan, TX   November 15th, 2007 3:40 pm ET

Congratulations! This is well deserved.

David B, Sterling VA   November 15th, 2007 3:29 pm ET

Is this for real? Nominated for a Nobel peace prize for taking a couple of plane trips?

Shouldn't candidates for the Nobel have accomplished something, not just spent a few hours in first class and then a few more hours shaking hands on a 'fact finding' junket?

I like Richardson, but this is just silly.

Ed S, Lexington KY   November 15th, 2007 3:23 pm ET

Big deal. Just about anybody can nominate just about anybody. Let me know when he wins.

Danny Casolaro Martinsburg, WV   November 15th, 2007 3:14 pm ET

I nominate Rip Taylor for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The reasons should be obvious....
